What's new

Pakistan defeat Sri Lanka by 67 runs in 2nd ODI at National Stadium, Karachi

A bit disappointed tbh. 305-7 against a weak SL team isn't a good look. Nonetheless, well played Babar!

I hope srilanka give a good fight here and would not be disappointed if they go on to win this.

This is pretty much their preferred bowling line up.
True and also Pak first match after a while together and under new management. Reading the thread of Pak batting was like reading patwaris comment after Imran good speech.

SriLanka bowling is almost full strength but their batting is not. Although Pak lacks any world class bowler but should still win easily in the end.

Not many of us are fans of the so called new management. I am not excited much about our future under waqar, Misbah and sarfraz.

Exactly, people don't watch cricket and just because Sri Lanka came they assume this is their C bowling attack. This is their preferred bowling attack.

Its their main bowling with the exception of maybe Lakmal and Thisara Parera. Akila Dhananjaya is reported for suspect action while Malinga has retired. So there isnt anybody in particular missing from their bowling. Neverthless Pak could have scored more.

305-7 is not bad score but it's not a good score either. Top teams would've scored at least 330+ against this SL team imo.

Beauty from Shinwari, got it to nip back from an across angle.

No bowling coach other than Waqar can give me more confidence personally with the likes of Hasnain, Shaheen, Naseem, Musa and the current bowling lot.

Avishka Fernando may be the only batsman in this line up who played in the world cup.

Agree with Waqar's importance and we need to add a spinning coach like Mushi or Saqi.

This match is likely to be over before my afternoon tea and biscuits. This SL side is too weak.

Shinwari bowls some quality staff, but on his bad day, he is ugly.

One reason I think (apart usual ones), is that he attacks the stick with new ball. I believe he has the highest % of Bowled/LBW against top 6 and inside first 35 overs (when batsmen don’t swing bat hopelessly). This is good quality, if you are good - great quality if you are Waquar Younis of early days, but it’s costly if your RADAR isn’t functioning because every loose ball is almost a free hit, even WY had an economy close to 5 by 1994. And Shinwari guy isn’t tall either, which make it even easier for batsmen.

One improvement area could be to develop a ball that holds it’s line, or cut away for a surprise element. And, he doesn’t have a stock ball - on rhythm, keeps it within channel, otherwise all over the place. He has to master one ball that he can land expectedly at least 4 times out of 6; otherwise too risky bowler. Oblate, Hasan has gone through same path and he is short as well - I checked few innings of scoring chart, and Hasan was conceding almost 50-50 either side - this happens when you experiment too much without mastering a stock ball.

home crowd and home matches are something different..inshallah this is the start..i dont know how far they can carry the presidential security but it is possible

What about the pitch seems to have better carry then the UAE pitches.

Have seen this too many time where our team feasts of minnows, low quality Sri Lankan team only to get brutally exposed against the big boys like India, Australia, England, NZ, South Africa.

Our cricket will not improve if we don't consistently play and test ourselves against the best

Waiting for our series in Australia. That will reveal the true potential of players

Man watching Shinwari bowl makes me thing that not selecting him for in the World Cup was pure injustice.

Would’ve definitely outbowled Hasan Ali.

Anyone can out bowl hasan these days.

I am watching on web - can’t tell. My standard assumption is that any wicket is better than UAE, particularly Abu Dhabi .... and that boundary is large, extremely heavy for those dead tracks. Karachi in olden days was the best batting track in PAK, it should be good for batting. I wrote it the other game thread that PAK has to make new ball count, which pacers did ( though not sure why Amir was taken after 4 overs - heat/humidity may be)

Said it right from the start! PAKISTAN MISSED A MASSIVE TRICK BY NOT PICKING SHINWARI FOR THE WORLD CUP!! Yes, he goes for runs but majority of the times he picks up wickets!

Played 2 games against Australia in that series before the world cup and only bowler to look threatening and take wickets on those flat pitches. And what do we know he gets dropped and Hasnain who didn't do much in that series gets picked.

Yes. True UAE pitches are dreadful to say the least they don't help anyone at all. All we can hope for is that we move out of there and hopefully more teams start coming over to Pakistan which will help our cricket. yes could be that even Babar shot was a tired one.

Too early to say - out of his 34 wickets, 24 has come against HK, SRL & ZIM in 9 games at an average of ~8. He doesn’t offer anything with bat, needs to be hidden in field.

This is the USP of Shinwari. Either he will go for 80 of 10 overs but when he picks up wickets he picks them up in 2-3 overs and picks up 3-4 wickets out of no where. These sort of bowlers win games more for you. He should have been picked in the ODI WC and the English conditions would have suited him.

Got a man of the match in SA against SA too and bowled pretty well against Aus in UAE where other experimentation were going wrong. He is inexperienced at the moment so one can only hope he can get better find more consistency with more experience.

Obviously a lot of pace bowling options are available including upcoming youngsters as well but he can remain in the mix of the things as far as he gets better with time.

You do realise that that was a whole other team right ?

Srl got whitewashed in LOIs in UAE as well against Pak, so its not like few other players would have changed the complete outlook of the series.

Srl have been struggling in LOIs for sometime now.

True but the same team beat the eventual world champions. So you never know. There was a lot of potential in that team in Kusal Perera, Mendis, Mathews and Malinga.

So removing a hand full of "potentially good" players is all it takes to make the A team into a D team.

Interesting :13:

There is no denying that this is by no means Sri Lanka's strongest or first choice team. However, there is also no point denying that Sri Lanka is no longer the team it was in the 90's with an abundance of household names.

Apart from Malinga, Mathews and Perera, Sri Lanka could have sent any other 12 players and it would appear like their so-called D team.

Essentially the difference between their A team and their so-called D team is 3 key players.

Sure if Sri Lanka had decided not to send Jayasuria, Murali, Vaas, Ranatunga, Atapattu, Aravinda de Silva, Chandana & Malinga and instead had sent the current lot then you could argue that their is a big enough contingency of front line players missing to deem the games irrelevant.

However, with only 2 or possibly 3 key players missing, calling this team their D team is a long way from the truth.

Is there any double tier stadium in Pakistan ? Only Pakistani grounds l saw are NSK and the Gaddafi. Both are single tiered and are in the two biggest cities in the country.

When did I say that this is Sri Lanka's D team?

I was just replying to the poster who said that Pakistan missed out on 1 point in the world cup against Sri Lanka (washout).

Shinwari has consistently been the best wicket taker in Pakistan over the past 2-3 years. Shouldn't have been dropped for the WC

Absolutely Savak!

I'm sure if they give him consistent chances he will prevail! It really demotivates a person to be dropped immediately after a bad performance rather than being encouraged!

Guys stay on topic - we will take care of the rest

As usual Sadab is performing like another passenger like our captain.

I know you asked to stay on topic but resist ro call out for the loser mentality and inferior complexity of certain poster who likes crying even in good moments for Pakistan. No one is u Derek illusion that Pak are top team but that does not mean we always ay badly. World cup start was bad but the team then went onto put a good performance. We may get better or not but those that love the team will continue to support. I mean look India could not beat mediocre S A it happens

Time to drop Shadab Khan. You can't keep him in the team just because of his fielding. Need to groom some proper spinner who can lead the spin department in WC 2023.

Definitely getting Misbah era feels again.... needed a massive late order finish to even reach 300 playing at home against minnow level side and in an era when 300 is just par.

Then top order removed and the team just starts chilling because victory is inevitable. Welcome back to 2011-2015, the dark years of Pakistan cricket.

LMAO in just his first match he converted Fakhar into a tuk tuk, never before seen FZ hit a 50 at 80 SR.

Pakistan need better spinners in the middle. Pakistan would struggle against better teams if they do not look into this issue.

You can't blame the coach/selecter for the failure of the players. Each player is responsible for their own training, fitness, game awareness, fielding and everything else that comes with it.

All of our players are mental midget including Amir who failed to develop his batting after been playing for so long and Babar Azam who still isn't trying to improve his power hitting game (visible) and learning to improve his bowling (non-visible since we don't know if he is trying to learn it behind the scene)
