"Pakistan had great cricketing culture late 90s & early 2000s, they were a champion side" : R Ashwin
R Ashwin and Younis Khan to speak about India-Pakistan cricket now
Younis Khan recollects his favourite memory at Lord's: When I was the captain of Pakistan in the World T20 in 2009. We had played against India in the warm-up match but lost. But from there on we kept moving forward and rising higher in the tournament. I kept telling my senior players that we need to soak up most of the pressure.
Ashwin: When we won the Test match here in 2014 when Ishant Sharma took 7 wickets in the final innings. I think that was the biggest win for us. Ever since I have been a part of the Test team, I think that would be our biggest win since then away from home.
Younis Khan on India vs Pakistan clash on June 16
Younis: The current Indian team is very experienced and the core group has been playing cricket for a long time now. Pakistan on the other hand, has some young and exciting talents who have just burst on to the international stage. But the flip side of that is when young players come in they don't know what pressure is. Pakistan didn't start well in World Cup 2019 but we have always been slow starters. But I hope they gradually go up in this tournament
Ashwin: Generally if we look at the Indian team, we have very good bowlers. All of the fast bowlers can clock 150kmph. Bhuvi gets the swing with the new ball. If the conditions are overcast then we can take full advantage of that.
R Ashwin on his omission from Indian ODI team
Ashwin: As a cricketer I will feel I can do so much more for the team in ODI cricket. This was the team and the management's opinion to leave me out. Whatever is right for the time, is from their perspective and they have done it. From a player's perspective all I can do is come out and express myself and try to keep getting better which I did showcase in the IPL. There are two sides to the coin, you are never really right or wrong.
Why India are favourites to win World Cup 2019?
Ashwin: India are the favourites because look at the batting that we have. Top three we have Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. Rohit and Virat are two of the best batsmen in the world. The way Virat paces his innings and the kind of firepower that Rohit has, he is one of those batsman who can change gears any time. Apart from that we have a balanced set up. Hardik Pandya has emerged as a great player, MS Dhoni is the calming influence in the middle order. Then the likes of Bumrah at the death and with the new ball. The two wrist-spinners as well. Looking at the from a long shot, the balance India has got in terms of pace, spin and the batting prowess, I think India are the favourites. Looking at the other teams, I think India and England will play in the final. That is my prediction
Ashwin: Pakistan had a great cricketing culture in the late 90s and early 2000s. They were a champion side back then. They had the likes of Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib. Indian players now are coming to the team after performing in the IPL. Some of the IPL games are as good as playing in the World Cup semifinals. When your playing in front of a packed house in Wankhede or any other stadium. All that matters a lot. Like Younis bhai said, the experience of not having played under pressure and the magnitude of it, they don't play in Pakistan any more. All these things are big factors. But see what happened in the Champions Trophy final in 2017. They have the skill especially in their bowling department. They can bowl out any team if they have the runs on the board.
Younis Khan wants India and Pakistan to resume cricketing ties
Younis Khan: India and Pakistan should resume cricketing ties. It is very important for the game. We anyways have so much problems with our law and order in both countries. Cricket should be played between the two nations. India and Pakistan matches produce great players as well. When I played for the first time against India in 2003-04, I became a player. I became a superstar after my performances in 2004 in India. So I feel India-Pakistan cricket is very important for the sport. The whole world craves for India vs Pakistan cricket matches.
R Ashwin recollects India vs Pakistan 2011 World Cup semi-final
Ashwin: I had never seen so much crowd in the city. I actually got scared when I saw the crowd outside my hotel. After breakfast, I saw the crowd and started sweating. I called my friend and he asked if I was playing. I told him I am not allowed to reveal it. When Gary Kirsten told me I would not play, I was relieved. I did not play a lot of World Cup matches and there was pressure from the media to play me. The national anthem at the ground: we were all stammering. It was a full house and I have never seen something like that. The hair stands up. That's a feeling you can never trade off for anything in life.
Ashwin on Kuldeep and Chahal's emergence
Ashwin: As a bowler and as a cricketer to replace anybody's shoes who has performed for over a period of time is never easy. I want to credit both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav for it. Both of them have bowled really well in the middle overs when five fielders are placed outside the inner circle. How they do it is even more magnificent to watch because of the kind of wickets and breakthroughs they get in the middle. They have actually shown people like me about how defensive bowling can help in different pockets of the game. To bowl the ball wider, try and change different lines. Because that is the demand of the modern-day game and they have done that incredibly well. When Kuldeep and Chahal came into the mix, the game was looking for some sort of freshness and different ideas to try and curtail the middle overs. It's not neccessarily the skill that they have exhibited, it's the thought-process they have shown that has given them the success. They are going to be very important cog in the wheel for India in World Cup 2019.
