Pakistan reach 103/0 at stumps on Day 1 of the 1st Test after bowling out Zimbabwe for 176

Pakistanis do not play lot of test cricket, so they have to play their regulars to keep them toned up and in form. Also most players are relatively inexperience so they need test cricket experience.

can see both openers giving slips catching practice here.

These 2 and then the blocker azhar ali

Might as well paint a wall get a chair and watch it dry

Saw a bit of the Zim innings in bits and pieces. I thought Pak bowlng was consistent and discplined. Some of the deliveries SSA bowled - wsa world class and could have taken wickets against any batsman...hassan bowled fantastic and with fire....you have the makings of a good pace lineup in these two guys....am a big fan of afridi now...good luck from an indian fan ...

Stop the press, our openers have faced 4 overs together, when did this pair achieve it before?

Think its a valid point. All this "talent" and we are going into a minnow series with oldies with barely 10 tests to their name.

Why should we not persist with them when they’ve performed last series? They’ve come from a first class setup as well and done well. Compare Nuaman to Sajid today and who bowled better?

Finally someone gets it.

I liked the smooth action of Sajid Khan. .. Hopefully he will more impact full in white ball cricket as we are lacking in spinning department specially in off spin..

Let’s hope so but Zimbos played him really well today, took a few balls to work him out.

Abid looking patchy.

That's all good - but it's an ideal tour to try and blood some longer term prospects. If this was a big tour against a top nation, sure go with your top team.

Surely there is logic in that - not nurturing 35 year olds vs a minnow.

Take a moment to think about the amount of test cricket we play in a year and then imagine if your regulars come back for the next series and then you tell me will they perform or will there be rust?

I wanted to punch Abid for that reaction after calling for run then refusing.

Shot of the day for me this straight drive by Imran Butt.

That's not enough of an argument for me. In fact even more of a reason to look at players that won't become OAPs between series' like some of these are based on the frequency, or lack there of, of test cricket we play.

Ashwin had over 300 test wickets and tons of experience. This is Sajid’s first match.

Washington Sundar debuted in that series and had an economy of 3.45 and average of 42.

Yes Sajid hasnt created impact so far but, as said its too early to judge. Irrespective of the opposition, first day is tough for spinners generally and he has gone at around 3.4 which isnt that bad.

I agree, I'm just saying that he has a long way to go.

Then mate there’s no winning with you. Take a look at the youth last series and what they did compared to the “oldies”. If you are performing then you should keep playing and extend your form. It’s another thing if you are struggling. Just look at Ross Taylor who’s old and still performing.

Ross Taylor is on a different level to the players I am talking about lol.

Definitely. He didnt create much impact and there is no denying that, my point was just that its too early to judge. However, will have to make a comeback in the 2nd innings as otherwise he might have to sit out the next match for Zahid or maybe a pacer.

Yea but he’s still old. The only way you build experience is by playing matches rather than sit on the bench, this is a good chance to get confidence and prep for the WI series which is in October.

Considering our slip catching, Imran Butt makes the team even as a slip catching option along with his batting especially if we consider the lack of opening options we have overall with everyone being almost equally mediocre.

To keep on switching between mediocre opening options is pretty useless as well. Trying to make something by giving someone a long run is the only option which Pak has as musical chairs isnt gonna extract anything.

As I said once before Imran Butt looks so much like Adnan Sidiqqui (Pakistan TV actor) under a helmet, similar frown as well when he is in serious mood.

Totally agree with you, and the fact he has scored runs in domestic so he can adapt in I ternationals too, but needs long run and confidence from management that he will not be dropped any time soon. With his slip catching his like extra attacking bowlers taking some difficult catches as well as blinders.
With Abid Ali I'm not too sure though as he has played quite a bit now without ever playing a convincing inning.

Surely imam ul haq is a better option than any of these two

I personally think considering the temperament and value he has shown as an ODI player he surely deserves a proper go at test level whenever an oppurtunity comes. He hasnt been given a single test in last 2 years and now has been discarded from test format.

Not the best of the management.

He played 11 matches (21 innings) and couldn’t get a century or anything significant so why? It’s wishful thinking thinking that if a player performs in one format he will excel in the other.

Why can't pakistan dominate any team im sure even if they play against kenya it will be a even contest

Pakistan are dominating. Bowled them out for 176,opwneers are understandably careful as they are trying to establish themselves. Later batsmen will play a lot more freely as they have confidence of not being dropped after few failures.

Donald Tiripano will be Pakistan's achilles heel in this series. With his off cutters, expecting a few batsmen to get LBWs. Too bad Asad Shafiq isn't here, otherwise he would have bee a sure shot dismissal for Tiripano.

These 2 are playing dot balls for the sake of it, plenty of easy options to keep the strike rotating. They just waiting for the boundary ball to try and score.

50 partnership after a long time for our openers. Celebration time come on!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

First 50+ run opening partnership in Tests for Pakistan since December 2019 vs Sri Lanka in Karachi.

On that occasion, it was a 278-run opening partnership between Shan Masood and Abid Ali (when all top 4 batsmen got centuries).

Imran Butt is doing reasonably well, but asif Ali has 5 from 49 outside of the boundaries. That's well beyond just establishing yourself, that's a giant waste of balls.

Imran is doing well, lay off poor old Asif Ali lol.

Shan Masood averaged 23 after 13 matches with 1 century and he was still persisted with. He did play some solid knocks afterwards but still couldnt carry on the momentum which one would expect from a veteran of 25 test matches. This shows two things, one is different treatment of different players and other is mediocre opening options which Pak has.

Imam on the other hand has already performed in one format which shows a solid temperament (Counts a lot at international level) and his FC average isnt worse than quite a few others who have played. So if you take both things into account how does he has a worse chance of success than some other openers around?

Where are the wrist slitters who were having bad feelings about this match before the start that Zimbabwe can upset Pakistan ? Same trend before every match spreading panic over nothing.

For me he needs another season or two in QeA before being reconsidered. Imran has a similar FC average to him.

:))):)):))) he takes off his helmet after scoring a 50 against mighty Zimbabwe.. hahaha

I wanted to see Bobby bat today but not anymore. Not enough time left today and we know he becomes a bunny when he continues the following day.

Half of Abid's runs have been lucky. This guy has such a pathetic technique and zero grit against half a quality side. So far what I have seen of him is quite disappointing. Look like a minnow basher only.

What happened there zim trying their hardest to make sure pak don’t lose a wicket before the end of the day

And shameless Pakistani management giving standing ovation 😆 Lannat
It's a sign of a mediocre cricketer. He couldn't put bat to ball against SA on home soil and here he celebrates like he has scored a double hundred against Australia.

Imran has a good chance of improving his technique and get better. Abid has no hopes.

Some beautiful straight drives from Imran today. Hoping for his big knock. Want to see more of him.

Now this Abid useless will play for another year or two after this fifty against mighty Zimbabwe.

Yes like most players he needs more FC cricket but, issue is he was kept with the test squad for almost two years without giving a match. Meanwhile he couldnt even play much FC cricket as he was with the team to prove any red ball pedigree and now he has been dropped.

As I said, this is poor management of a decent young opener. I understand that chief selector was changed and new approach comes with a new person but, surely Imam has been hard done.

Can we please send Haider Ali and Abdullah Shafique to "Yousuf school of batting"? Also the hitters like Khushdil, Iftikhar, Danish etc as surely getting their basics sorted would be good for them :smith

Yep, this would've been a good confidence builder but looks like he'll wait longer

Lol so much applause from the dressing room. You would think the openers just scored a 300* runs partnership on WACA.

Yep, well can't say they done well. It'll be particularly interesting to see how the middle order bats given their time with M. Yousaf, looks like it's had an impact for these 2. Pakistan should look to bat till day 3, impose a big total and bowl them out.

Is it these 2 or the test match?

Definitely these 2, 100 partnership should have been bare minimum against this attack. No intent no taking the initiative putting pressure on zim bowlers. The worst thing is this mediocrity is going to be applauded and we are going to be stuck with these two for the next few series, until we play a proper top 5 team and we see the same old cycle of being 2/3 down for next to nothing.
