Pakistan reach 24/2 at Stumps on Day 1 of the 1st Test after Sri Lanka dismissed for 222

They've not punished juicy half volleyd and full tosses so far. Comsumed by fear

This has been the case for sometime but, considering the inconsistency away and sometimes facing struggles at home against Nz in UAE and Aus in Pak you would assume an approach change should be on the cards however, it doesn’t seem to be the case so far.

Its not just about winning a match or two rather an approach which can deliver consistent results more often then not. That would be positive approach which has been missing for sometime. Only Babar has the ability to dominate bowling in this lineup and thats purely due to the skills he possesses. Rest need a mental approach change.

Sri Lanka added a vital 90 runs in the last 2 wickets especially on this wicket

Just tuned in and caught the last few ov
Fantastic drone shots of the ground and the surrounds.
Speaking of drone -jeez Bazid was drone enough - am guessing one of the commies is Aamir shohail - what a drag...
Good bowling by pak in 1st innings. if you roll over the opposition below 300 on the 1st day - u are in the drivers seat overall.
Pak should look to bat SL out of the game. will be intersting

My question is what's the benifit of Yasir then if he couldn't even bowl to tail on such a surface?

Yasir is way past it. This wicket tho suits the finger spinners more. Pakistan's lack of quality spin stocks is seriously worrying. The PCB needs to declare a spin emergency in the country and hold more spin bowling camps. Make domestic wickets more spin oriented.

Babar needed to bowl Nawaz more too.

Shouldn't have picked 3 seamers that would've forced babar to bowl more spin.

Last session spoiled what was becoming a really good day for PAK.

Babar being a poor test captain bowled too many overs of Naseem Shah, not enough of Nawaz

There was a graphic showing at Galle in last 2 years of Test matches, SL's spinners took 86 wickets while seamers took 8.

And we pick three seamers !

This is the even day with slightly pak is ahead... But considering the Lankan's spinners... They could wrap up Pakistani batting line quickly

And they took 7 wickets in a day :D :)))

But the last two Sri Lankan wickets added 90 runs which could prove very decisive. Tbh this reflects more on the lack of quality in Pakistan's spin stocks which are very dry atm.

Exactly... We don't have any good spinner in domestic circle..
Maybe we should give a try Zafar Gohar or Shadab in test

Pakistan bowlers ran through the Sri Lanka batting order to bowl them out for 222, before the hosts struck late to leave the contest hanging in the balance.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka hoped to make it count big, with a big first innings total in Galle. But the Pakistan bowling attack, led by the 2021 ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year – Shaheen Afridi – were too hot to handle for the hosts.

Meaningful scores were few and far for Sri Lanka, with Afridi starting the proceedings for the visitors taking the all-important wicket of skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. Afridi would take three more wickets in the form of Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella and Maheesh Theekshana, ending with figures of 4/58.

Yasir Shah (2/66) and Hasan Ali (2/23) were also massively impressive, as Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka to a modest total of 222.

Chandimal, Theekshana show some resistance

It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Sri Lanka batting department. Dinesh Chandimal, continued his golden run in Galle after his brilliant double ton against Australia. As wickets were falling, Chandimal was dogged in his resistance, playing a vital knock of 76. He also played a few brilliant shots, taking the attack to the Pakistan pacers.

He got some support from Theekshana, with whom he established a 44-run stand. After the departure of Chandimal, Theekshana added 45 runs in a partnership with Kasun Rajitha, which helped the hosts cross the 200-run mark.

The spinner played a knock of 38 runs, before finally departing against the brilliance of Shaheen Afridi.

Sri Lanka strike late

After an under-par total on the board, early wickets were the need of the hour for the hosts. Rajitha delivered just that. He struck Imam-ul-Haq on the pads, trapping him lbw for 2. Imam immediately reviewed the call and ball tracking showed that the delivery was clipping the stumps.

It was an early jitter for Pakistan, who now had to see through an awkward final 45 minutes of the day. Abdullah Shafique and the experienced Azhar Ali adopted a defence-first approach, trying to see through the remainder of the day. They failed to do that as Prabath Jayasuriya got Shafique lbw for 13 with an arm ball.

Pakistan ended the day on 24/2, trailing the hosts by 198 runs, with Ali (3*) and skipper Babar Azam (1*) at the crease.

If you lose the toss and bowl the home team out for around 220, thats fantastic.

Now the issue is that the batting, all the top 6 will bat at a -50 SR. Its pathetic to see the same formula again and again.

Sri Lanka from 133/8 to 222 all out - the last 2 wickets added 89 runs.

And then 24/2

Could have been so much better for Pakistan.

As usual - over to Babar Azam for day 2.

Pakistan should have buried the game at 133/8. SL clearly ahead now considering our weak batting lineup vs spin & Pakistan have to play last as well.

He provides much needed solidity down a brittle batting order and takes crucial wickets. Has better bowling average than Naseem Shah and same batting average as Imam ul Haq.

He should be undroppable in Pakistan team. All they need to work on with him is improving from where he is, even though where he is currently, still counts far more than many other players in the team.
