What's new

Pakistan reach 259/5 at stumps on Day 1 of the second Test in their first innings against South Africa

Not sure. May be in South Africa there's enough pace and bounce in the pitch to engage outside edge as well.
Here the batsmen know only ones coming in are threatening so they are prepared.
In South Africa you can push the batsmen back too by targeting the body so the ones pitched up are more likely to cause trouble.

Basically the lengths and swing are predictable on slow surfaces.
Steyn and Donald used reverse swing better than Rabada also. Maybe the pitches also in today’s times are slow and dull in Asia than it was in 90s and 00s.

Ramiz in first 30 minutes of the game starting kept on repeating how dry & '' brittle ' the pitch is .... now says much better surface than one in 1st Test
97/1

Good fifty by Shan. His test average (31) is improving but a guy of his ability should be averaging 40+/- in tests

I believe he should be given another chance in ODIs. Can bat at 1-down. Has a solid technique + can play big shots.

What is his average as a captain?

Such a slow slow tuk tuk style batting and that too at home.

Even Jadeja scores faster than this overseas.

Tristian stubbs should be dropped only for his poor fielding. He drops more than he holds on to.

And this motor mouth Verreyne is also good for nothing

this is how you show bias support for players you love:

“That’s not his problem, it’s South Africa’s problem to take their chances”

I’m sure Ramiz wouldn’t be saying that for anyone besides ABD, Babar and Rizwan.

Verreyne is not a great keeper, especially not on turning pitches. Probably more in the team for his batting

Any other player would take these reprieves and score a ton but I feel Abdullah will give South Africa a few more chances

If Pakistan don't collapse they look set to post a good total. Best time to bat in the test match and South Africa's fielding and sloppiness has given them more confidence. This pitch will definitely get worse to bat on as the match progresses. Shan and Abdullah need to score tons.

Shan Masood has four 50+ scores in the last 8 innings. Credit where credit is due. This kind of consistency is not something you ever see from him.

Looks like pak batters are in no hurry today.
Playing slowly. They should look to bat for 2 days and then torment saffers on a deteriorating track

This is 2020s. Not 90s cricket.

Ponting and co used to score at a rate of 4-5 back 20 years ago.

It is such a boring and bland style of cricket.
Boring and bland doesn't matter when the aim is to win games.

This isn't odi or t20. England bazzballing + Ponting's team doing it an era earlier has caused Tiktok brain rot for everyone.

Aka at one point people could watch 45 min videos on Youtube no problem and now they struggle watching even 3 min long videos.

Same thing has happened to cricket. It does not mean it is bland or boring, you just aren't use to it.

Besides its not like England's bazzball era nonsense has been successful. They've yet to reach a wtc final

Well this is Pakistan, not peak Australia and this is not a flat road either. On pitches like these you win by grinding the opposition down. If Pakistan get to a commanding position with wickets in hand I'm sure they will try to enforce their will on the game but that shouldn't come at the expense of getting a big first innings total.
