What's new

Pakistan reach 80/2 at Stumps on Day 4 in chase of a target of 343 to win the 1st Test

I will buck the growing trend and give a bit of credit to young Will Jacks.

Wickets are wickets, and he got six of them in Test cricket on a concrete road of a pitch.

Well done Jacksy.

What does that say for the mentality of the players even less their quality that they're getting out to a part-time debutant.

It's an absolute joke but Will Jacks won't forget Pakistan in a hurry. He's a future England captain I think

For a FTB on a road that's gotta be a disappointment. He wasn't playing at the Waca. 7 players have scored a century this match, one short of the record.

Root should have had a triple century too

He is not FTB he can score on any surface, just because he had a slow start to his career , doesnot mean he will not score plenty on SENA pitches. 136 is a lot of runs against any bowling on any pitch.

What a ball Naseem! Duckett with his namesake

We'll see but Crawley, Duckett and Brooks got 90+ SR centuries this match. Perspective

Nice to see this annoying Duckett being out for a golden duck. It was so frustrating watching him bat like he is Butler in the T20 series.

Hope Naseem can hold a disciplined line and length for one full over without bowling dross at the pads. It’s always one good ball followed by filth.

But good job man. It’s all on you.

Hurts even more because he’s not even a regular in t20s and even tests until now.

Naseem shah is too short with the new ball

Don’t care how flat the track is go for the pads and stumps

Do consider contrasting style of batting of two teams, and 3 debutant bowlers in Pakistan line up with a 19 year old Naseem leading the attack.
Naseem nowler well on the second day and started good again.

An astonishing return for Basement. That’s his berth booked for all the tests.

I can’t believe that Stokes has sent Pontiff in at #3 after he has just kept wicket for six seasons. 66 should have gone in first drop.

Just pitch it full and straight

Crawley doesn’t like it full on his pads

Mohammad ali should be given one more test at least on a decent pitch ,this is not the pitch to judge bowlers especially on debut.

Brainless by Naseem again. Continues to bowl legside. What is with this this guy.

Did the same thing in the final. For every great delivery there was plenty of legside filth to be put away

Mohammad Ali is very much a lightweight with little to no punch in his bowling. He's asking to be hoicked for six

rubbish bowling continue by Pak bowlers, road of pitch or not but this rubbish line and length will be punished everywhere.

Naseem bowling with good pace but very inconsistent with lengths and line is wayward as well

English pacers picked up 2 wickets in 50 overs.

Naseem & Ali picked up 5 in 48 overs. It's clear this is a dead wicket and there is no point judging the fast bowlers on this pitch.

As I type this, Ali gets a wicket.

England keep gifting wickets, that's only way this sorry lot can pick up few cheap wickets on this road.

Spot on. Unfortunately not many fans can wrap their heads around the fact that the pitch simply doesn't allow chances to bowlers.

England can mess this up

300 run all out and Pakistan will win

For anyone who cared to observe, Ali gets movement both ways at a decent clip.

He will be a fine bowler on better wickets.

England just need to bat for 40 overs here, ie score 280 in this innings and it’s 350 to win — game safe and England will try and get the wickets.

No way that the Pakistan win would happen facing 350, with their established strike rate as a batting side which is the world’s lowest.

Pakistan need to keep England at a target of under 300 if they are to go for the win.

Yet England kept it tighter , aided by unadventurous batting and got a big lead. I bet Sohail Khan would've got something out of this autobahn

This match is becoming farcical. England will lose wickets playing all sorts of shots now.

Bowls the perfect ball to root but has been bowling garbage to Crawley has Naseem Shah

Good slower ball from Naseem to Crawley there, deceives the young man and nearly does the job.

Man Azhar runs and moves so awkwardly

How has he managed to play 98 Test matches is so weird

No doubt Crawley's favourite team is Pakistan. So garbage against every team but somehow keeps finding ways to not get out vs Pakistan.

It's obviously easier to keep it tight vs our no stroke wonders.

Otherwise, English seamers have fared exactly as M Ali. 2 wickets @62.

If they give Pakistan 100 overs to chase 350 on this pitch and the pacers not being threatful, I reckon Pakistan will chase that.

Even Pakistan's super slow batting attack batted decently quick on this going 3.72 runs per over in the innings.

Would certainly make for enjoyable cricket if this were to happen after a snooze runfest of a match.

Players like Azhar Ali holding Pakistan back, Eng risky approach should be capitalised by opposition but alas we've no one to turn up, bowl out Eng for 220ish and go for win

Nathan Haurtiz Marcus North Mark Craig Divendra Bishoo .......and now Jack's the long list of players we've made unplayable

There won’t be 100 overs to bat though sadly.

In a game where we get full days of play, England would be at a greater risk.

But we are getting 80 over days due to the bad light issue, and that could easily be engineered downwards to 75 if a team was motivated to do so.

England hold the cards here. They can push the game, slow the game, stick or twist as they see fit — with the bat, with the ball, and in the field.

Pakistan can only survive or lose. UNLESS they bowl England out for 220 or so here. Then it’s on

I knew it wouldn’t work. Daft decision by Stokes.

Anyway 66 can comfortably play in ODI mode here, go at 90/100 rather than all this six-hit madness.

At this point, this is how England play and its unlike any other team does. Pakistan are notoriously old school in their batting approach.

Just look at their practice match vs Lions where bowler was getting smashed. Even James Anderson went for nearly 5 runs an over vs a bunch of random English batsmen. And this was on a Abu Dhabi pitch where its not even easy to score quickly in T20.

Pontiff should have got a rest. I agree with you.

We will be fine though, we bat down to 9.

Yep, that is most likely the case. It will depend on how many overs England will provide and in a way, tempt Pakistan in a chase. If they only give 70 overs or so to chase, then Pakistan is unlikely to even try and on this pitch, 70 overs won't be enough to bowl them out Pakistan either.

Interesting selection dilemma for the second test. Foakes will come in for Livingstone. I would sub out Old Man Jimmy and get the cutting edge of Wood. But presumably Basement is now undroppable after his sixfer, and Leach must play in the holding role, so that means just two frontline quicks again. Unless we drop Leach, use 66 as the second spinner and field three quicks?

Pakistan should be able to draw this match, the pitch is still rubbish and England’s bowling star was Will Jacks in the first innings

Butcher: Pakistan still in with a chance
Sky Sports Cricket's Mark Butcher...

"One thing we didn't put forward during the change of innings was the fact with Pakistan having got so close...England going hard could suddenly lost five wickets for not very many, even on this flat pitch.

"Then Pakistan find themselves only needing 180-200 to win the game - that could still be the case for Pakistan and they're still very much in the hunt for a win here.

"It happens a lot in Pakistan. You do go three-and-a-half, four days where it seems the draw is the only likely outcome and then both teams are in with a chance of winning the game - and I think we're in that zone right now."

Missing Rauf here. Would have been able to execute leg trap better with his pace

Babar is incredibly slow as a captain. Garbage field placements. He is clueless.

Ditch this guy as captain already he’s not built for this.

Groan. Butch again. 5 down, England in trouble, 180 to win Butch, yeah lol.

Lead is already 158 with 8 wickets left.

This guy has been misfiring all year and getting it constantly wrong since McCullum came in, he clearly doesn’t understand the strategy or the brand of cricket that England are trying to play. Stokes directly challenged him in an interview after the last Test of the summer about his persistent negativity and criticism & Butch was rather left floundering over his words.

Butch is old school - “Make sure you can’t lose, then try to win.”
