With the three-match ODI series levelled at 1-1, both the teams will want to produce some dominating performance and clinch the series in the final clash in Lahore.

Overview
Pakistan vs Australia, third ODI
Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
2 April, 03:00 PM local

Pakistan registered their highest successful run-chase in ODIs and ended their ten-match losing streak against Australia by winning the second ODI. After a setback in the first match, the hosts were desperate to make a comeback, and an excellent performance from the batters helped them level the series 1-1.

Chasing 349, Pakistan openers Fakhar Zaman (67) and Imam-ul-Haq (106) laid the foundation with a century stand before skipper Babar Azam starred with an 83-ball 114, pushing his side closer to the victory line.

Their top-order batters' performance in the series has been a significant plus for Pakistan; Imam has now already scored back-to-back hundreds in both ODIs, and the in-form Azam has also contributed, including a masterclass in the second game. The middle-order batters also played some handy knocks as they successfully took Pakistan across the line after two big wickets of Imam and Babar, but Pakistan will be expecting more from Mohammad Rizwan, who hasn't been able to impress with the bat.

The Pakistani batters' success in chasing the total, however, overshadowed all of their bowling shortcomings. Heading into the series decider, there is plenty of room for improvement in the bowling department as they have struggled to pick wickets in both the ODIs. With another similar pitch expected in Lahore for the last ODI, spinners will need to bowl economically. The batters, on the other hand, will want to keep up their good form and put up another dominant batting performance.

Australia, on the other hand, are nowhere behind in producing exceptional performances. Their batters have ticked all the boxes, while their bowlers, especially the spinners have turned up at the right time to keep them in the game. Travis Head's promotion to the top of the order has reaped a lot of benefits for Australia and Ben McDermott following up his half-century in the first ODI with a century in the second, has made the visitors' top-order look solid throughout the series.

Only Aaron Finch's form has been a cause of worry for Australia, as he has struggled to find his rhythm. The middle-order batters Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis' contribution was another positive for Australia.

Remember the last time

After winning the toss, Pakistan captain Azam sent the visitors in to set the total, and it was a comprehensive dominant performance in the first innings, with Head continuing his superb form with a 70-ball 89, partnered by McDermott, who scored his maiden century.

Following the early dismissal of captain Finch, Head and McDermott laid the foundation for a big finish with a 162-run partnership. Handy knocks from Labuschagne (59) and Stoinis (49) helped Australia further dominate in the middle overs but Shaheen Shah with his four crucial wickets helped Pakistan restrict Australia at 348/8 in 50 overs.

Chasing the big total, openers Zaman and Imam produced a century opening partnership and laid the foundation for the middle-order batters. However, Stoinis on a flat pitch assisted some grip and dismissed dangerous Zaman on 67, but Imam continued his good form to bring his consecutive century, becoming the first Pakistani player to score back-to-back ODI centuries against Australia.

Azam also produced a masterclass and his 111-run partnership with Imam made the run chase look easy. After completing their centuries, Imam (106) and Babar (114) both lost their wickets, but Khushdil Shah's 17-ball 27* helped Pakistan chase down the score with six balls to spare.

What they said

Babar Azam: “The plan was to bat positively and bat in partnerships. When there are wickets in hand, it becomes easy towards the end and there won't be any pressure of the required rate. We gave 20 runs too many and hopefully we will do better in the next game. This is my hometown and it is a proud moment for me and the team. The overall effort from the team is very pleasing. last time we couldn't chase it down and today it was a complete team effort.”

Aaron Finch: “I think that opening partnership set the foundation for Pakistan and Babar came in and played brilliantly. When you lose the toss, it doesn't make much of a difference. The wicket played really well throughout. I thought we did quite well with the ball and when Pakistan took the risks, it came off and it can happen in ODI cricket with only 4 fielders out during the middle overs.”

Great opportunity for a rare series win against Australia.

Let's go!

So who will win this fine vehicle?

New Zealand's 118-run victory against Netherlands in the 2nd ODI means that they have jumped from the 11th to 8th position in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table, leapfrogging Pakistan, with 50 points

Another high scoring game expected can Pakistan do it against a B team.

Their best team would be too strong it would’ve been worse than losing the test series to lose 3-0 at home against a mostly reserve team.

Pak has to restrick Aus under 275, otherwise no possibility chasing it down.
350 chase cannot happen everytime in international matches irrespective of batting pitches

Full marks to the team management today for this bold change of Asif in place of Saud. Asif may not be a good batsman, but it shows that the team management realise now that we cannot have so many accumulators in the ODI lineup. Hope Asif performs well on consistent basis as it'll only be good for Pakistan.

I feel problem is more with the bowling - Dahani should have been tried out to bring down the run rate and take wickets

Looked like a full toss at first but hit base of the stumps....and the man in form is gone!

In bowling, the pacers are bowling good (excluding Hasan). It's the spinners who are going for runs. And we know that we are missing our first choice spinners (Shadab, Nawaz) due to injuries. So it's looking good for Pakistan team currently.

Great Yorker by SSA

Another awful review by Shaheen.
He takes dumbness to another level when it comes to reviews.

I don't understand why they take review off shaheen's bowling.
Babar should say no straight away

Saud out... Asif in..

Bad decision imo

ofc very bad decision, Asif ali is a nothing batsman and to have him for Saud is very bad...

They are so many ODIs where they play Asif Ali and he failed to score even 2 digit runs,,, he is a gully mohalla cricketer, not suitable for intl cricket..

Had they wanted to play somone who can hit sixers, they can play Haider Ali

Haider Ali and Shafique again has been wasted this series in bench

Finch's wicket

in as much you are correct, but ultimately the captain did an extremely poor assessment to take the review. that shows weakness in leadership

Aussies going no where at the moment...had it been Pakistan, they would have been crucified for batting this slow and trying to consolidate

Brilliant stuff from shaheen and rauf so far.

Pakistan starting well and on the ball in a series decider where it matters . Am I dreaming?

Need to go for kill here and hunt more wickets.

Why does Babar always listen to Afridi when no one was supporting and knows these umpires rarely get it wrong, edpevially when it is notan lbw decision.
Both bowlersbeen brilliant this match, carrying on from last game. Shame Pak do not have Shadab and Nawaz to help.

On a super flat pitch, destroying the Aussies like this...gorgeous (all proper batsman as well)

Pakistan should decimate Australia here.
It doesn't happen often that Pakistan have upper hand over australia.

Now for Australia to counter attack. Three wickets down was part of the plan.

Going from a run rate of over 7 in the previous matches to now a run rate of less than 2!

Finally gets a boundary interesting to see if the pitch has more help or just good bowling up front.

Seen us waste strong bowling starts before. Let's avoid a repeat of that 2018 Asia Cup match v Bangladesh please.

Another one for Haris, dismisses Labuschagne

Think heat maybe a factor for the fast-bowlers.

Heck of a start from Pakistan.

A bit disappointed to see Saud being taken out for Asif. It's not that Saud shouldn't be taken out, he absolutely should be as Pakistan need more high SR batsmen down the order but Asif isn't the solution. This is the type of role they should look to develop Haider into instead. A much more dynamic and has the potential to be a good ODI batsmen.

Stoinis is the guy who can take it away - need to get him soon

It may be difficult to contain once ball becomes a little old and trajectory of ball remain true. This pitch is a belter and batsmen can easily explode afterwards. Would take some serious spin bowling especially after the main quicks are out of roster right now.

Missed opportunity to find a proper 3rd seamer in either Dahani or Naseem Shah...

I won’t be susprised if you Pakistan manage to mess this up we only have 2 bowlers

Waseem just doesn't have skills. Naseem would have been a good choice. If nothing, he has pace and a knack of hitting the seam hard to extract some seam movement. Selectors missed the trick

Huge wicket just as Australia were on the charge and making a good recovery.

Especially after he had removed the one or two bad balls he bowls during an over, as demonstrated in the last test match....anyway Stonis gone and Pak on top
