South Africa, ruing the narrow three-run loss in the opening T20I against Pakistan, will be desperate to make amends when they clash again in the second match in Lahore on Saturday, 13 February.

Pakistan v South Africa, second T20I
Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
Saturday, 13 February; 18:00 local time

Despite being a new-look side led by Henrich Klassen, the Proteas have the potential of taking on a team of Pakistan's calibre. They showed exactly that when putting up a gutsy fightback in the first match and almost secured a victory.

That said, they are not without their troubles. While their batting looks settled at the top with openers Janneman Malan (44) and Reeza Hendricks (54) firing in the first T20I, their middle order failed to capitalise on the solid foundation and perished one after the other. Their bowling looks stable with Tabraiz Shamsi returning 1/20, his tight lines strangling Pakistan's momentum in the middle overs.

The visitors might look to bring in JJ Smuts for the next encounter in place of Jacques Snyman, who did not impress with the bat or the ball.

For Pakistan, all eyes will be on Mohammad Rizwan. He slammed a brilliant 104* in the opener, a knock that defined Pakistan's innings and ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

The rest of their batting line-up crumbled, though. They enjoyed more success with the ball – spinners Usman Qadir and Mohammad Nawaz conceded just 42 runs between them for two wickets. Their pace bowlers were expensive, and the hosts could consider giving a game to Hasan Ali to aid their pursuit of an unassailable lead.

Remember the last time

Requiring 19 in the final over, South Africa fell just one hit short to hand Pakistan a thrilling win in the first T20I. They started well, dismissing Babar Azam for a duck on the second ball of the match but then allowed Rizwan to stabilise, and the wicketkeeper-batsman ended up hitting his maiden T20I hundred in the match, taking Pakistan to a competitive 169/6.

In response, South Africa began their chase with confidence, the openers putting on a half-century stand. After Malan was out, Hendricks paired with the middle order to keep the Proteas in the hunt. But Haris Rauf turned the match in his team's favour when he dismissed Hendricks and Andile Phehlukwayo within a space of three balls, and turned the pressure back on the visitors.

Heinrich Klassen, South Africa captain: "I'm a little bit disappointed about the result. I think the lack of batting intensity for four overs there in the middle cost us a little bit. Hopefully we can get things right in the second game. Hopefully, we can take good memories back home."

Babar Azam, Pakistan captain: "The boys put in a great effort. We gave some runs in the PowerPlay but the spinners brought us back in the game. We feel confident. We are improving on our fielding as well."

South Africa have won the toss and elected to field once again.

Need to get 180+ here, ideally around 200.

why not. he was in hot form? is he playing some pajama league games?

He and the PCB had some disagreement/misunderstanding about the dates he was playing T10 clashing with the date that Pakistan players had to enter the Covid bubble for this series.

Winning cumbanation is maintained. The PCB thinks this is a World Cup winning team.

Yes let's bowl Shaheen and Hasan into the ground.

Then we can act surprised when they inevitably break down.

Knew that Waqar is not truthful. He said he wanted to rest Afridi now same team. Both Misbah and Waqar will overuse and destroy our players.

Pak’s middle order and pacers need to put up a better show this time around

Not sure Waqar has any say in team selection or he doesn't care about our fast bowlers get injured or burn out.

shaheen will ultimately get injured , other teams are even rotating bowlers in test cricket and here we are killing our bowlers.

Why is 50 year-old Ifti still playing, after failure after failure? Danish Aziz is on the bench twiddling his thumbs, he could easily be given a chance to bed into international cricket against a SA Z team.

He is Misbah's buddy!!!!Also M Wasim should be equally blamed for selecting serial failures like Aisf, Ifti, old Sarfraz, not resting Shaheen, Hasan....

Yes all are same. Nothing will change in Pakistan.... Better to stop following this team itz waste of time

No rotation ...wow....just wow.... Saheen Faheem barely gets rest......common Misbah bhai ...don't be
defensive.....and this weak ..plz

Sa trying nd testing which is a good sign for CSA....that's the way to go...

Even if they win today, Pak won't experiment much in the last game either.

Then in 2 months time when they tour SA, they'll experiment there.

It would have been good if the line-up was rotated slightly. Shaheen and maybe Faheem could have been rested. Ifti and Talat should have been dropped.

Bro they need Shaheen to play in order to save their jobs. Samjha karo

Have guys like Ifthikar, Nawaz ever performed or they highly influential to get selected without performing. Missing Fakhar as well. There was always some expectation when he bats. Atleast few of his outside eedges would fly to the boundary few times. These guys are not even capable of that. Haider needs be given a few more chances but as of now looks like a worthless investment.

Mohammad Rizwan's start of an innings should be a real worry for Pakistan if he's to open in World Cup. All it would need is for him to play 20 odd balls and get out at 100 strike rate. Can't always rely on taking time in T20s

Why does Shaheen Afridi play these inconsequential games against B teams esp after the test series?

Why this blind umpire is officiating today ..... blind as a bat .... Shozaib Raza...... there will be some dodgy umpiring decision today

No way Talat should hv been dropped he is in good form and looked good last match before he was robbed. Aamer Yamin should have played ahead of Fahim. Fahim is better test batsman, and shoulder issue is limiting his bowling.

Babar looks awful

Time for him to go back to basics.

Head falling over and issue against left arm spin too

As of late babar has been really poor with anything on the legside.

Once again the Babar+Rizwan drs combo strikes for Pakistan

This is worse than the Misbah+Waqar combo

If you cant see it, then you are blind.

These players have become extremely soft and casual under Misbah. The reviews are a clear indication of this

rizwan is least of our worries at the moment.

I predicted this.

Babar already has concentration issues and it looks like captaincy has made it worse for him.

I said this a while back about his concentration issues and also that captaincy will burden his game further as he just started to perform.

He's in desperate need to go to HPC and work with MoYo or some professionals on the game.

Shozab should've made up for his mistake from yesterday and given this not out.

Babar is just going through a rough patch, nothing more to it. Part and parcel of every player’s career

Not only mentally weak selfish also going down the safraz Umar akmal route pretty quickly..

Extremely selfish decision

What are you trying to tell your team? That we are going to take a review no matter what if Babar's wicket is at stake? That you have no trust in the lower order players to play a clutch innings?
