Pakistan 313/5 (Imam 93, Masood 76, Rizwan 62, Agha 52, Muthusamy 2-101) vs South Africa

A solid all-round batting effort, highlighted by two crucial partnerships, handed Pakistan the upper hand on day one against World Test Champions South Africa. Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood added 161 runs for the second wicket, while Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha closed out the day with an unbroken 114-run stand. All four batters reached half-centuries, with Imam falling agonisingly short of a well-deserved hundred.

Despite glimpses of control in the middle session, South Africa’s bowlers struggled to maintain pressure on a pitch already showing signs of wear. They briefly sparked a comeback with three wickets for no run around the tea interval, reducing Pakistan from 199/2 to 199/5, but dropped catches and inconsistent bowling allowed Pakistan to regain control.

South Africa’s inexperienced attack — featuring three spinners and two seamers — toiled hard on a turning track. The spin trio of Senuran Muthusamy, Simon Harmer, and Prenelan Subrayen bowled 74 overs between them, taking four wickets but conceding 248 runs as Pakistan capitalised on loose deliveries.

Earlier, Kagiso Rabada struck in the first over, trapping Abdullah Shafique lbw for a duck, but Masood’s counterattack, including a towering six off Subrayen, set the tone for Pakistan’s aggressive intent. Imam’s fluent stroke play and smart rotation of strike guided Pakistan to 107/1 by lunch.

Masood reached his fifty after the break but fell lbw to Subrayen for 76, ending a fine stand. Babar Azam’s arrival was met with cheers, though his stay was brief — Harmer trapped him plumb for 21 after surviving an earlier close call on review. Imam’s dismissal for 93 and Saud Shakeel’s soft return catch to Muthusamy gave South Africa hope, but Rizwan’s calm resilience and Agha’s composure tilted momentum back to Pakistan.

By stumps, Pakistan’s total of 313/5 looked commanding on a surface likely to deteriorate further. With runs already on the board and spin expected to dominate, Pakistan hold the advantage heading into day two.

Playing XIs

Pakistan need to target 450 minimum from here and hope the pitch starts playing tricks on day three onwards

Pakistan have put themselves in an excellent situation after Day 1 and hopefully they can get to 400-450.

More important will be seeing the pitch break up a bit and get tougher to bat on though.

Rizwan out. Good innings from him overall.

Certainly looks like the pitch has plenty of turn and some invariable bounce. I don't think SA spinners have been quite good enough to exploit it. Don't think it'll be easy for SA to bat on.

Markram blundered by not bringing Rabada back the moment Rizwan and Agha came to the crease.
I've noticed that SA is the only team that hasnt ever faced my predictions until yesterday where I claimed they'd lose this test.

Does that mean their winning :vk2

Noman falls as well

Nauman bowled. Their lefty has another two wickets in an over. Pitch looking tougher and tougher to bat on.

I know they all can bat but has Noman Ali been promoted to maintain the left-right combination or is he really a better batter than Sajid Khan?

Why hit out? Sajid Khan can bat as well. No need to hit out as long as Agha and Sajid are their. Only when Shaheen and Hasan Ali come into the picture.
Sajid also gaan, ball doing a lot now, might as well just try to maximise as fast as possible, only to get tougher from here for new batters.

SA have been poor in Asia(IND/SL/PAK) for a decade.

But credit to Shan and Pakistan for exploiting their weaknesses too. They put their weak links under pressure whenever they erred in pace and length

Tail will not survive when the pitch is turning square. Agha has to farm strike and score maximum runs

I agree with you after What just happened 💀💀💀.

I don't get how I keep this doing this jinx over and over again 🤣🤣.

You sure, Cause as soon I spoke and started watching the match 3 wickets fell 🤣🤣.

I thought I'd watch the match for 2-3 overs at my workplace but guess not 💀.

Btw whose genius plan was it to have the first day of a Test on a Sunday instead of a Wednesday or Thursday like most other teams do to maximise viewership and spectators during the weekend

I'm not sure Saffers have the ability to bat on this pitch, especially now that it is expected to turn more.

Also, Sajid and Noman will bowl better upfront than Muthuswamy and Preneleyan did in the first session

Pakistan will win obviously. SA spinners have bowled poorly.

But I wouldnt count SA out either.

This is amazing. First time I've ever seen something like that.
3 wickets fell on 199 and next 3 at 362

Underestimate the proteas at your peril. They are the world test Champions. Their game plan is to attack the Pakistani spinners, they have picked Brevis ie baby ABD for this reason.

I don't believe anyone's underestimated them? I'm not confident if pk can win.

I would have been comfortable had they reached 450

Pakistan's tail is not going to wag in these conditions. The top and middle order has to take the bulk of the scoring responsibilities if these are the pitches for the series.

Salman Ali Agha can't handle scoring rate pressure when he is under pressure to hit out. T20 will definitely not be his format.

Stupid play at the end. You can't just play only for your hundred. Should have looked to reach 400.
Good knock nonetheless

Pitch is unplayable already. Pakistan spinners should be salivating at this . they carve through the SA batting line up like a piece of cake :kp

378 is a good score , I was expecting 350 yesterday ... 67 overs left for the day , predict SAF's score at close !
I think 180/6 .

Post lunch they should start with Shaheen and Hasan. If they good wickets then good. Otherwise bring in both Noman and Sajid together for the whole session

Still can't see the rationale for playing unhygienic Hasan over Abrar on this pitch ... It would be a exciting Test if Saffers can get to 320 somehow .
