Mickey Arthur during the Pakistan vs. New Zealand pre-game presser:

[Reporter:]

Sitting outside, we have been calculating, okay, this margin, this margin, that margin can Pakistan take, surpass. So do you have this thing in your mind that if we can win by around 85 runs, it will take us above New Zealand in net run rate. So, do you, I mean, this thing is in your mind that we have to not only to win, but also to pass, surpass New Zealand on net run rate?

[Mickey Arthur:]

Yeah, look, of course it is. It is based on and during the Calcutta chase, I had every scenario in my pocket as to if we won in 25 overs, if we won in 26 overs, 27 overs. So, we kind of knew as to how we were going to eat into the net run rate of particularly New Zealand. What I didn't factor into was South Africa doing us a favour the next night. So, we do have all those scenarios. Of course, we have those scenarios. I think the first thing for us, though, is we've got to respect our position. New Zealand are a very, very good team. I think they're very well coached. I think they're very well led. I think they're a very experienced cricket team. We've got to respect it. And once we get ourselves in a position, only then can we start talking about those net run rates. Now, I'll have all the information, but I won't necessarily give it to the players until we feel the time is right to put the foot down and potentially try and close that net run rate because we've still got to win the game as well.
Why didn't they bother then chasing the target against Bangladesh faster if they had scenarios for 25, 26 overs etc? We had all the wickets in hand and still they laboured to get the total in 32 odd overs...even with the analytics in the background, no game awareness....

Confidence was low after the losses and collapses. Only explanation.

Afghanistan would have a safe route to qualification by now if they hadnt lost to Bangladesh. They won much tougher games after that collapse

I doubt they can beat Australia and South Africa

So even if they had beaten Bangladesh, they would have 10 points in the end and with their not so good NRR, they would have been eliminated anyways

Against Bangladesh was a very one sided loss . So if they won, their NRR would have been in a much better place now

Well they need to beat AUS and SA and they might not be interested in dropping this match.

AFG winning now makes a very intresting situation and it will be much more complicated if ENG beats AUS tomorrow. Fun times... Nonetheless we need to beat NZ and ENG comprehensively what a nail biter. Pressure on and see how our players do. Frankly, they could have done a better job against SA and AFG and we wouldnt be in such a mess.

I think they can if AUS and SA are already through to Semi. It woudlnt be important enough match for them. However if ENG beat AUS ....... then it will be interesting. SA looks safe though.

Exactly. Team management should have sent Iftikhar & Salman Agha at no. 3 & 4 instead of Babar & Rizwan to finish the match early

Pakistan aren't making it. They'll certainly lose one of the games against NZ/Eng and NZ are way too professional a side to not beat Sri Lanka in a must win game.

It's going to be a repeat of 2019 Manchester once again in Mumbai.
NZ honestly don’t have the bowlers to defeat Pakistan if you ask me.

Their best bet is to bowl first and restrict Pakistan to below 350 and this time get the runs with their batters instead of bottling two chases

AFG winning has simplified things actually.

PAK have no choice now but to win both matches And improve NRR to hope to qualify.

If OZ or NZ lose tmrw , it will confirm SA qualification .

Things are actually getting simpler.

Against SA, New Zealand’s chase was totally dismantled by an exquisite Rabada spell. He didn’t let them them cut loose at all.

Middle overs, that’s where the game is.

Pakistan should aim for 400 against tomorrow’s NZ attack if they bat first
They can't even score that against the Nepals of this world and you want them to score 400 against the Kiwis in what is an essentially knock out match in the WC?

Rachin Ravindra
Tim Southee
Kyle Jamieson
Ish Sodhi

That should be 30-35 overs of 300 runs IMO

Yeah Babar needs to grow up and play for the team tomorrow

If you get the pitch that you got for the OZ game , then you can probably win.

However , if you get the Chinnaswamy pitch that ENG got vs SL - a pitch where Angelo Mathews was extracting extra bounce and NZ are playing Lockie and Kyle Jamieson, then PAK can start packing their bags already.

It's about ability...even the Saffers with all their big hitters only managed 357...best we can do is to emulate that but I can only see us making 280-290 odd...

Pakistan fans are not thinking straight.

They are the third worst team in the tournament (better than SL and NED)

They can't and don't deserve to qualify.

Mark my words, NZ will beat them handsomely tomorrow
England is at the bottom FYI

Knowing BCCI and ICC most probably it will be the Eng vs SL one.

Okay

Pak is comprehensively beating NZ tomorrow, like we always have in the world cups.

Okay Mr. doom and gloom.

Let's see. Please quote me when Pakistan comprehensively beat NZ tomorrow.

I don't see how Pakistan can beat NZ unless NZ play pathetically.

Was possible if we didn't have Imam, Rizwan, Nawaz and Shadab in the team.
Rizwan is a bit different

I think he has realised that he might as well survive swinging hard. If he doesn’t, he will be torched by the fans and media like Babar is. His innings v SA should give you an indication where he truly stands as a batsman. He’s never really playing for the team, always playing for his perception amongst fans

Bro they don’t have bowlers

It’s a perfect kind of attack for this Pakistan batting

Pakistan need to beat NZ and then hope some how England beat Australia

That would then mean 4 teams are scrapping for last 2 semi final spots

Aye, but Rizwan, Babar and co will be playing for personal milestones first, WCs and winning games can take a back seat.
Come on they tried to play aggressive against SA. Our problem is we can play aggressive when we are not pressed for it. If thats all the think of, they make terrible mistakes.

Also, somehow we think aggressive means try to play a blinder like afridi (worst thing for Pakistan cricket). We need to find a balance, dont play with blind aggression just try to dominate opposition.

Pak will easily lose to Aus, IND, ENG even if their target is 250 to chase.

However, PAK can and does usually win against SA/NZ even if they 'give' a target of 250.

NZ and Pakistan have met each other a lot in recent times home and away. They are familiar with each other. So this is going to be a tight contest.

Pakistan will win this but I dont know if they will win with a big enough margin to qualify on NRR

It is possible.... If Pakistan is given two turns to bat.
Damn thats mean , but was genuinely funny though !:ROFLMAO: Considering Pak current form - posters speculating Pak can make 400 or heaven forbid 500 - wishful thinking is an understatement. The bubble will burst shortly. OTOH if somehow Pak make 400 and win by 200 runs - man the floodgates will open here lol !

Has NZ been more consistent or better than SA? We got pretty close to beating SA.

The key differences are Fakhar and Wasim. I think we have a pretty strong chance against NZ. Its the margin of victory that worries me though.

Wasim has been a revelation. The bouncer to get rid of Klaasen was stunning.

I thought he was brainless but last 2 games he's been magnificent.

Looks like a full 50 overs first innings and a stop start rain shortened 2nd innings tomorrow. I think the team winning the toss might just field first.

Pakistan is not playing at Wankhede under any circumstances.

I agree because it won’t qualify for the semis. Any team that loses that loses four straight games in a World Cup doesn’t deserve to qualify for the semis.

If NZ loses to Pakistan and SL, they will have lost four in a row too.

Tough gig for Pakistan.

All of their own doing.

They were done before they entered the tournament with a half cooked team. Worst bowling and batting team ever
Oh I knew thar already, this is why I said before the WC started that Indian government should refuse Pakistan team visas so that Pakistan can save themselves from embarrassment and other fans got offended

not much left guys, boys are half shot after getting smacked for 400. It's a mountain and they cannot climb it

Agree! Their loss against Afghanistan has come back to bite them.
Come on!!! We cannot ride on luck all the time. Afghanistan should have won 70% of their match against us. Nasim saved us twice so as Imad. Don't think we'll even play next World Cup.

So many things falling into place.

They are two favorable results away if the rain continues.

That afghanistan game was the difference maker. All hopes on Srilanka if we are able to win today.

IA we get to the SFs. An average team getting to the SFs would be some story. I agree that it still looks highly improbable but where there is life, there is hope

Looks like we are still in the hunt boys!

Man that umpires call on shamsi will forever haunt me, similar to this nz game it is not a game we deserved to win but could've escaped with a heist.

The Afghan game I knew was gone. I don't even classify it as upset, you could tell with the body language, that the Afghan bros wanted to give us a special type of thrashing that day.

Some things to consider, SL might have a better chance of beating Nz in a shortened game. Best case would be rained off game off (same stadium as today) and then Pak beats eng to qualify. So some things increasing the odds of qualification. There is some rain forecast for the day atm.
