Will Pakistan somehow qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2023?

Come here folks for the maths.Assuming Pak wins today,

Pak 4 wins in 8 matches, to play vs England
NZ 4 wins in 8 matches, to play vs Sri Lanka
Afg 4 wins in 7 matches, to play vs Aus and SA
SL 2 wins in 7 matches, to play vs BD and NZ

So, if SL wins vs BD,

SL 3 wins in 8 matches. So, SL also have a chance if they beat NZ and England went on to beat Pak.

So another scenario is aus lose to England, unlikely looking at current score but possible , ideal would have been by good margin and lose to one of afg or ban and their nrr gets below nz making it easier to surpass that in case nz beats srl. Or if they lose to all 3 then very likely their nrr would be close to or below pak level. In that scenario afg has to lose to south Africa which is likely and their nrr is not high anyway

Only big positive in all this is we play last and will know exact target to qualify.
 
Here are the NRR scenarios and they are really improbable.

If NZ bats first and wins the match by just 1 run, then Pakistan needs to win the match against England by 134 runs, if Pakistan bats first.

If NZ bats second and wins the match by chasing it in 45 overs, then Pakistan would need to chase their target in approximately 24.2 overs, if they bat second.

I guess, SL beating NZ is the most realistic scenario. Pakistan is too far behind on the NRR.

There was a time I felt that a target like that we would crumble. But with these batting tracks and our current batting when chasing, I would not feel it is impossible to get a game done in under 24 overs. We would need a Bangladesh type of bowling performace though which is unlikely unless Wasim, Afridi and a 3rd bowler all bowl well in the same game. We need at least 3 bowlers to be spot on taking wickets which has only happened in 2 games. For example bowl a team out for 230. Then you can try to win it in 25 in T20 style. It's still a long shot, but if someone told me we'd win a game we gave up 401 in bowling first, I'd laugh. Strange things going on.

Basically c'mon SL or rain if we can take care of business against England.
 
Things are clicking for Pakistan.

They now have to beat England and hope SL beat NZ (while ensuring Pakistani NRR is better). Tricky but doable.
 
Window of opportunity opened a little further with bad weather forecast for the NZ vs SL game, which may just mean a win however it comes against England.

Sri Lanka management and players are under pressure after their last game. They will be desperate to win their last 2 and secure Champions Trophy qualification.
 
SL had a great game against England at Bengaluru, and they are under pressure to win. So although NZ are favs, it can happen for SL
 
NZ 4 losses in a row. They are going to be short of confidence going into the match against Sri Lanka.

But this Sri Lankan side are terrible.

It would be a shock if Sri Lanka beat NZ.

We need rain or a SL team stung by the Indian humiliation.
 
NZ vs SL will have full first inning and won't complete 20 overs in second due to rain.

Pak needs to beat Eng though. Eng may play spoil sport.

Agree ... AFG and SA match could have gone our way. But i think we havent nailed down our best team. And we have changed our squad so much it shows a bit of naivity on our management part. Our spinners Shadab and Nawaz have made it difficult for us surely. Amazingly Iftikhar is our best spinner, chacha jee, wow.

Worked for them in the last WT20 with Netherlands beating SA.

Rain could wash out our game and get them through, although they would deserve it more than us.
 
Nz doesn't deserve to be in the sf. They are a very conservative team who frequently never go for the jugular. Efficient and regimented. Would be good if Psk qualifies and it's an Ind-pak sf.. man that would be a cracker jacker ! Bumrah vs fakhar zaman at the eden gardens-! 👍

With all due respect no chance at all they been lucky enough to play in Chennai eden Lucknow type of grounds where bowlers get help. Rest of the 2 matches are at wankhede and Ahmedabad where pitches are flat and high scoring grounds

They are marginally ahead due to superior NRR (had some massive victories earlier).

But, not much difference between NZ and Pakistan currently. Both deserve to be in semi equally.

If Afghanistan beat Aus or SA, they deserve it more than either of us but their chances of progressing are slim because of NRR and they will have to beat Aus and SA to progress which is very unlikely.

They will have beaten Pakistan and SA/Aus which is more impressive than us (no one) and Pakistan (NZ).

This. They got some easy games upfront and now during the business end of the tournament are getting exposed of their shortcomings (their toothless bowling, in particular).

Pakistan for all its flaws, will make for more exciting contest if it indeed gets into the semis.

Regarding Thursday’s match between NZ vs SL, just hope SL wins it (a tall ask, looking at their current condition) or rain plays a spoil sport thus ending the game with no result. Still, Pak need to win their final game against England for semis in such scenario.

SL winning against NZ is our only hope, rest is delusion like NZ beat SL by 70 runs then we will need to win by 200 runs.

If NZ chase it in 38 overs we will have to chase it in 17.2 overs astonishing

Even if afg win one game - they still would need sl to beat nz and eng to beat pak because their nrr is so poor.. to be absolutely sure of qualifying they have to beat both sa and aus which is a very tall order. Even winning 1 game against either aa or aus is very tough for them..

I think we have been deluded since SL match where we chase 345 after 2 down in powerplay. We are delusional nation and it works for us LoL
 
It doesn’t rain that much in Bengaluru for the game to be completely washed out. We wd still have match with rain interruption here and there. The drainage system of the ground is also state of art.

All is not lost, and given how the team has played so far I’ll still take this situation. We have a chance till our last game and that’s saying something.
 
I wonder why doesn't Pakistan play with yesterday's batting approach every game? The way they batted yesterday, it was incredible to watch.

Agreed. Nonetheless, SL winning the toss and bowling first would tip the balance a lot in Bangalore.

If Pakistan- New Zealand game was an AFTERNOON game, it's highly unlikely that it would have produced a result

New Zealand- Sri Lanka game is an AFTERNOON game with 80% rain probability on the same times that rain fell in NZ-Pak match

It's going to be a Washout. Pakistan will go through and then win the final at Ahmedabad InshAllah

I feel as long as we don't play Ind in knockout we have a chance, against Ind the players have some kind of mental block where they fail to perform against them but then there was CT 2017 Final as well, let's first qualify.

Losing to India would cause such mental trauma that me and many like myself would be in deep sadness for years to come.

Its better if we don't qualify at all than to lose to India in knockout.
