AB de Villiers named captain of Team of HBL PSL 2019

• Team selected by an independent panel, comprising Mudassar Nazar, Ramiz Raja and Danny Morrison

Karachi, 18 March 2019:

AB de Villiers of Lahore Qalandars was named as captain of Team of HBL PSL 2019, which was selected by an independent panel comprising Mudassar Nazar, Ramiz Raja and Danny Morrison, who have collectively played 181 Tests and 416 ODIs.

De Villiers displayed his talent and prowess in seven matches, in which he aggregated 218 runs at a stunning average of 54.5 with an incredible strike-rate of 129.

De Villiers has been named captain of the side, which, as per the event regulations, includes four foreign players in the playing line-up, and comprises the best performers of the HBL PSL 2019 keeping in mind a winning combination that was capable of defeating any franchise side in any given conditions.

Mudassar Nazar, who led the selection panel, said: “It has been a gigantic task to select a team comprising 12 players from a world-class event that produced a high number of quality individual performances.

“We as the panel members decided to select players who can form a combination that was capable of defeating any franchise side in the world in any given conditions. I don’t think anyone will disagree that this is the best winning combination from the large pool of top performing players.”

Apart from de Villiers, the line-up includes four players from Peshawar Zalmi (Kamran Akmal, Kieron Pollard, Hasan Ali and Wahab Riaz), three players from Karachi Kings (Babar Azam, Colin Ingram and Umer Khan), two players from Islamabad United (Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf) and a player from Quetta Gladiators (Shane Watson).

Don't know how Babar makes it and has AB played enough games to warrant a spot?

And great Inzi picked Yasir ahead of Umer!!!! One of the most incompetent selector we ever have.

Don't know how Babar makes it and has AB played enough games to warrant a spot?

Yeah no idea how Babar got in there, Shezzy probs deserved the spot more. ABD probably made it in as captain due to star power and just captained LQ to a win or two because other than that he didn't do anything spectacular in terms of leading the team.

Would rather have seen Sarfoo as Keeper Captain rather than ABD (can still be in the team but as batsman only) and Kamran Akmal.

Lol this is hilarious. AB was captain only in few matches, in majority of the matches Fakhar was the captain and still AB is captain of the team of the tournament lmao. And their team didn't qualify too and were last in the points table.

Effect of some high level drugs lol.

This team is made just to satisfy Ab. How's he captain? His team came last and he left mid way through.

I despise him as much as the next guy, but ghareebon ka Dhoni deserves to be the captain. The organisers are needlessly pandering to the likes of de Villiers here.

The squad is fine, but starting XI is weak in bowling - only 4 regular bowlers and 1 spinner. Babar with a 115 SR, doesn’t deserve to bat at 3 - again PCB has done the same thing; he batted as opener, doesn’t make it over Watson/Kamran - so, they slot him at 3😝. Sandeep replaces Babar in playing XI, everyone from No. 4, gets a promotion. Only PAK batsman that deserved a chance was Asif & Kamran was the best WK-batsman by some margin. Bowlers pick themselves almost.

AdV is the perfect & only realistic choice for Captaincy - no controversy here, neither any pampering (of AdV). He is the only guy in playing XII who had led any side and when he was there, LQ wasn’t bottom team. Sarfraz, Sammy, Sami/Shadab, Imad, Malik, Hafeez/Fakhar didn’t make it to the XII, so AdV was obvious & only choice. 55/130 stats are brilliant for UAE leg (he could have improved it significantly had he played couple of games on that Karachi track & boundary), won couple of MoM as well, so he makes the XI on merit I believe.

There should be space for Hasnain in this XI. Wrecked havoc in the final and was one of the top performers in this tournament...

PSL had a problem. None of the captains did anything of note in their day jobs - bat or ball. So they picked one by taking a name out of a hat. Hilarious. His team was bottom of the pile.

I think Imam should have been picked ahead of Babar Azam.

I am fine with AB as captain. Sarfraz is a specialist captain with his poor batting now. AB is too good a batsman to not capitalize batting friendly conditions in Karachi. He is an all conditions batsman who brings immense start power.

My team:

1. Kamran Akmal (wk)
2. Shane Watson
3. Colin Ingram
4. AB Devilliers (c)
5. Umar Akmal
6. Asif Ali
7. Kieron Pollard
8. Hassan Ali
9. Wahab Riaz
10. Umer Khan
11. Mohammad Hasnain
