PCB imposes 5-year ban on Sharjeel Khan for spot-fixing in the PSL (reducible to 2.5 yrs) [Post#67]

Update on Sharjeel Khan case from PCB:

Lahore November 1:

Cricketer Sharjeel Khan reached out to Chairman PCB earlier in the week.

Sharjeel pleaded his case to the Chairman who reiterated PCB's zero tolerance policy on corruption.

strange sort of a PCB release. Almost an afterthought!

So Sharjeel will not be considered for selection ever again?

PCB is the most stupid board... They should reinvestigate the case.. Because what was said earlier that there were some discrepencies and no evidence was against Sharjeel which pointed his involvment in fixing.. The case should be reinvestigated if found guilty then should be ban for life.. There was a lot of hush hush in his case

He accepted his mistake and requesting for rehab

how long the rehab would be?9

Not sure but about 6 months I guess, during rehab he needs to publically apologize and take some ICC approved anti-corruption courses. Also he needs to do some volunteer/community work with the younger players advising them to not repeat the same mistakes he committed. If he does that he could resume playing domestic cricket from October 2019. After that it depends on selectors when to select him but I doubt if he will be selected again. If you notice despite great domestic performances Salman Butt got never picked again by national team nor by any PSL team.

I hope he gets picked if he performs well

To be honest, I actually liked his approach to batting. Though he was predominantly an onside player who waited for balls in his zone, but atleast he was watchable. Every time Shahzad n co. play a dot ball, a cricket fan loses interest in the game. There is no Pak batsman who is worth watching currrently. Umar Amin looked elegantly but i don't know what happened to his career. I was very disappointed, how could Sharjeel be this stupid. Its not like his place in the side was in danger. Did he came from very humble background or he needed lots of money urgently?. He had no competition and could have easily played in ODI/T20 team for like 7-8 years. Sometimes i feel so bad that almighty bless people with talent who don't value it. I would have never been pursuing my current profession if i had athletic ability.

Agree with what you said about Sharjeel. But just a reminder about Amin. He didnt have a career. Rubbish player with an elegant cover drive.

He will be crucial for us in T20 world cup 2020 in Australia. His cuts and pulls against pace can win us some matches there.

I believe luck and favoritism plays a major role in subcontinent cricket. Its about which guy team management invests in for long term. Rohit Sharma was flop for a long long time. He still is crap playing left armers. Moreover, there is a limit to which a player can improve. Only very few can take there game to next level after their arrival on international scene like Steve Smith, Kohli etc. Yuvraj was a gun player for India in ODI/T20 and a sitting duck in tests. Maybe you are right about Amin, i haven't seen much of him, only few domestic knocks on youtube. Its just the fact that being a lefty myself, i admire aesthetically pleasing left handers likes of Lara, Anwar, Ganguly etc

Seriously? People are still waiting for him to comeback into national side?

If he's done his time, and is scoring runs in domestic, why not?

It will be kind of message for corrupt minded players, do some fixing, get a ban, accept your mistake then get a rehab program and less days ban and after that you'll be free to play for a national team. I don't think it will be a smart decision specially after BUTT-ASIF-AMIR scenario. Surely in order to stop this we have to set an example and I think Sharjeel would be perfect sacrificial example for our players.

Sharjeel was probably the only batsman we’ve found in the last 10 years that could win you games. Unfortunate that he turned out to be a total dumba**

Love it how no one is focusing on his mistake and all they want is a good player back cos he improves the team
Is spot fixing/match fixing irrelevant for fans as long as the player is entertaining?

I understand the argument for Amir, but anyone who falls down this route after all that has happened regarding fixing shouldn’t be playing again.

It’s harsh, but we need to impose strict rules, otherwise players won’t be too worried about the consequences of their actions. We’ve lost talented players already, we need to try and protect future players and one way in which we do this is by handing out proper bans and sticking to them! No need to be lenient just cos the player can boost our chances of winning a trophy!

I felt very bad for Amir also when he got banned. There should be some sort of management/media training in place for new players, that might prevent players. However, greed has no cure. In past, oz and English players have also been caught. I personaly pity that corruption is acceptable in desi culture. I have seen my friends/relatives paying bribe to traffic police to escape Chalan, same people later share posts on Facebook about corruption and traffic jams. Even in schools in a India, if a guy cheats and doesn’t get caught, he is the stud. Obedient and disciplined guys are always seen as weak and losers. There is an deep rooted belief that its ok as long you don’t get caught.

What date will his ban expire and how old will he be at that point ?

If the shady Amir can after being punished why not Sarjeel who didn't have a green shirt on when he did the deed ?

I guess it's more stupid on Sharjeel's part as the Amir incident is what revolutionized this whole anti-corruption thing and Sharjeel was still stupid enough to fix. I have no idea what was going through his head when he knows there is a huge crackdown on Anti-corruption. Did he really think he wouldn't get caught? That being said, unfortunately I would take him back as our team is awful and we need a good batsman and no one can deny he is a dangerous player.

Looks to me Sharjeel was dealing with these folk before his comeback and had lost hope of wearing a green shirt again so over a couple of kebabs and chicken biryani he decided to take a short cut. But if Amir is back I see no reason why he shouldn't, Amir's transgressions go beyond the stuff at lord's going by the evidence it had been going on for a while. He was punished and then got the golden boy treatment so Sharjeel should be able to comeback to but am not sure when his ban would expire and how old he would be, his style of play relies a great deal on reflex's to

And if his batting average ends up like Amir's bowling average over the past year, it's a win win! :sharjeel

He was the one batsman I would stay up to watch from around 1am here in the UK and then go to bed after he got out, what a damn shame. Was a left handed Sehwag for Pakistan :yk3 I don't really watch cricket much now, don't enjoy it as much like before

I followed the Pakistan in Australia 5-ODI series and he looked to be improving with each game.

Shocked when the news came out two months later.

I literally lost hope with Pakistan cricket that day. It’s a fact we have the dumbest players in the world. No wonder our team just bottles on most occasions.

Amir should have never played for Pakistan again as well, and I am ashamed of supporting his return at one point. Initially I was against it, but I got swayed by the crowd later on but thankfully I got a grip soon.

There needs to be a zero tolerance policy for match-fixing, without any exceptions. If PCB has set this precedence from the onset, we may not have had a rich history of producing match-fixers.

The golden boy treatment that Amir has set a very dangerous precedence, and the only way to make amends moving forward is to deal with such players aggressively.

It can never be completely eradicated, but banning players for life and taking no exceptions is the strongest possible deterrent.

The next generation of Pakistani cricketers needs to understand that if you sell-out while playing for Pakistan, you will never have the privilege to wear the shirt again.

Yeah thanks to Amir's poor performances post return, you got a grip of yourself.

Some people rate themselves way too highly.

People need to get over whatever grudge it is they have held against him. Its not like none of us have ever not lied or cheated in our lives.. we all have.. I am man enough to admit it..

Most of us will probably never be in a position where we can be tempted to me hundreds of thousands of dollars by simply overstepping a line, more so when we were still 17. I hope in your own private thoughts some of us who bash Amir can contemplate our reaction, if we were ever put in that situation.

Hamari qaum is very quick to condemn others , even a 17 year old kid for life even after he did his time.. but we seem to forget ke apney gareban mein bhi jhank ker dekh lena chahiey..

This is proof of the fact that I am unbiased and do not have an agenda. I have an open mind and explore all possibilities.

When is his ban ending? My father has been enquiring about it from me the recent days, so I thought I´d ask over here.
