I like Kamran Ghulam.... but he's not a T20 player. Good player in the longer formats but not T20.

Ashton Turner replaces Johnson Charles

Karachi, April 11, 2025:

Australia’s Ashton Turner has replaced the injured Johnson Charles for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2025 and is expected to join the squad in Rawalpindi next week.

Turner, a top-order batter, scored 240 runs at a strike-rate of over 147 for the Perth Scorchers in the 2024–25 Big Bash League (BBL). During the Scorchers’ title-winning 2021–22 season, he amassed more than 350 runs at a strike-rate of 154.

Charles is currently undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the Cricket West Indies medical panel.

The replacement was approved by the HBL PSL 2025 Technical Committee, in accordance with the league’s regulations.

Good game for Multan today , still believe their combination is not sorted but the time for tinkering is over its result which matter now , every player must step up and in Rizwan they have a good attention to detail captain.
 
Ali Tareen shares franchise future plans
Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has reiterated his deep commitment to the franchise, calling it a project that remains “very close to his heart” following significant investment and effort to establish the team as one of the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) most dominant sides this decade. He also dismissed speculation that he plans to walk away from the team after PSL Season 10.

“I never said I’m abandoning Multan Sultans,” Tareen told local media during his team’s match against the Lahore Qalandars, which the Sultans won by 33 runs. “We are simply exploring options to re-evaluate our franchise agreement after the tenth edition of the PSL.”

Tareen explained that the current financial model is unsustainable for the franchise.

“We do have the option to renew our contract with a 25 percent increase on the current price. But at that price, we’re operating at a loss,” he said. “My plan is to exercise our right to exit the current agreement and rebid for the team – hopefully at a more realistic valuation, similar to Karachi Kings’ $26 million deal over ten years.”

He also pointed to the challenges faced by the franchise’s previous owners. “They suffered significant losses and couldn’t continue. We stepped in, and now we’ll look to bid again under better terms.”

Commenting on his team’s recent on-field performance, Tareen expressed satisfaction with their first win of PSL Season 10.

“After the loss to Islamabad United in Rawalpindi, we were focused on bouncing back at home in Multan,” he said. “The coaches and I agreed there was no need to panic. We knew once we got back to Multan, we’d get things back on track.”

While acknowledging the relatively subdued buzz around PSL X, Tareen emphasised that the Sultans continue to play for their fans. “We told the players they’re playing for the people of Multan. That connection, that love – it’s what drives us.”

On talent development, Tareen proudly highlighted the success of the Tareen Cricket Academies.

“Our men’s and women’s academies are operating year-round. One standout story is Sheher Bano, a 14-year-old girl who joined us with no cricket experience. She’s now represented Pakistan in the Under-19 Asia Cup and World Cup qualifiers,” he shared.

“Our development squad under the JDW banner is participating in the PCB-organised President’s Trophy Grade-II and I am pleased that they have done well in the opening two matches – taking first innings lead points in a drawn opening match and then recording a 10-wicket victory in the second match,” Tareen said.

Looking ahead, Tareen revealed plans to further develop cricket infrastructure in the region. “We’re working on building a stadium in DHA Multan, as well as enhancing facilities in Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur. The goal is to create a strong, coordinated network across South Punjab for our teams and academies.”

If We Can Lose Four Out of Five, We Can Win Four Out of Five – Bracewell

ultan Sultans all-rounder Michael Bracewell remains confident of his team’s chances of reaching the play-offs, despite a challenging start to the season that has seen them pick up just one win in their first five matches.

Speaking after a narrow defeat at home to Islamabad United, Bracewell acknowledged that the side has struggled for consistency, but believes there’s plenty of time – and talent – for a strong turnaround.

“T20 is a funny game. If we can lose four out of five, we can just as easily win four out of five,” Bracewell said. “That would put us right in the hunt, especially with four teams qualifying for the play-offs. If we can get into the play-offs, anything can happen.”

He admitted the team hasn’t always played as a cohesive unit but stressed that the quality is there.

“There’s work to be done, and it’s back to the drawing board,” he said. “I don’t think we’re playing terrible cricket, but maybe we’re just losing those key moments. If we can recognise and seize those moments, I think we’ll be in a good place.”

The Sultans will look to revive their campaign in upcoming matches against Lahore Qalandars (April 26) and Quetta Gladiators (April 29) in Lahore, before returning to Multan for their final three group games, including two crucial day fixtures against Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators.

Looking ahead, Bracewell remained upbeat.

“We’re coming off a good win against Lahore a couple of nights ago, so hopefully we can do the double on them and carry that momentum forward,” he said. “I’m sure they’ll come out firing – they’ve got a great side. But that’s the beauty of the PSL: six strong teams, and you have to be on form every night to compete.”

“We weren’t tonight, but we’ve still got five games to go. Like I said, anything can happen if we keep the right attitude.”

Despite their current position near the bottom of the table, the Sultans can take heart from their remarkable 2021 campaign – where they bounced back from a similarly tough start to win six of their last seven matches and ultimately lift the trophy.

Addressing the mood in the camp and how the team stays motivated, Bracewell said:
“It should be easy to stay motivated. We’ve played some really good cricket along the way, but mostly in patches rather than as a team.”

“Individually, everyone’s had a good performance or two this season, but to win games, you need a few guys firing together on the same night. As cricketers, we all want to put our best foot forward, and I’m sure the boys will be working hard in training over the next few days to be ready for that game against Lahore.”

Bracewell admitted the loss to Islamabad United at home was frustrating, particularly given the Sultans’ desire to make their Multan ground a stronghold.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose, especially here at home in Multan. We like to think of this ground as a fortress, and unfortunately, we weren’t able to get over the line today,” he said.

“I think we were probably 10 or 15 runs short with the bat. The dew came in a bit this evening, which may have made batting slightly easier. Credit to them – they played really well. But there’s plenty for us to work on heading into the next match.”

Reflecting on the contrasting performances between their win against Lahore and the latest defeat, Bracewell said the team struggled to maintain early momentum.

“Yeah, I think after a performance like yesterday, you hope to carry that momentum into the next game. Unfortunately, we didn’t get off to the best of starts,” he said.
“Islamabad bowled really well and kept things tight during the PowerPlay, which made scoring difficult. If we had gotten off to a flyer, we might’ve carried that momentum forward. But they shut us down quickly and took the early ascendancy.”

1. They wanted an aggressive overseas opener with Rizwan….

That didn’t happen! Johnson Charles pulled out I guess, so maybe that’s who it was. There were still plenty of gun options which they didn’t pursue!

2. They used their RTM on Tayyab…

They didn’t even play him in crunch games! What was the point? They didn’t value him in reality but they wasted their RTM on him?!

3. They picked Kamran Ghulam for number 4 and also as a left arm spin option…

How many overs did Kamran bowl in the season for them? How many games did he even play for them out of the 9??

They didn't follow any of their plans. Besides all that^, they talked up Mohammad Ali as one of their most important bowlers, only to let him get picked by Peshawar. Talked about using Iftikhar as an off-spin option (on-par with Bracewell lol) but I don't think he bowled more than once in the entire tournament. How is Ashton Turner, who bats in the middle-order a like-for-like replacement for Johnson Charles? Maybe someone like Evin Lewis could have been comparable. And in the end they went with Shai Hope at the top, who is another anchor type batter rather than an aggressive opener.

Really poor by them. Overconfidence, delusion, complete disrespect of world cricket standards. They thought PSL this year would be like the PSL’s of the past

Is it any coincidence Quetta are at the top with Platinum picks such as Allen and Chapman?

I think above all, it was a case of them abandoning many of the players who contributed significantly to their success in previous seasons. If you look at teams like LQ and IU who have been the most successful teams in recent years, the nucleus of their team has mostly remained the same for the last few years. Only thing that has changed are some of the players in those roles. IMO having a core group of reliable local players is just as important as having good foreign picks. MS had neither.

If they couldn't get Mitchell, the next best choice for that middle-order spot should have been Chapman because of his record in Pakistan. Instead they went with Bracewell who despite being an all-rounder is more of a bowling all-rounder and not really comparable to Mitchell or Chapman interms of batting ability.

The Bracewell decision might have been more as seeing Babar Azam as the main competitor to them. Bracewell’s career and reputation amongst Pakistan fans was enhanced because of his continues owning of Bobsy the king. That’s one factor

The other factor is how badly Tareen has been rattled by Imad Wasim making a total mockery of his side in the final. They literally picked Bracewell as their antidote for Imad Wasim only. If you listen to Tareen’s various podcasts in the build up to the draft, he alluded to this point of having a left hander in the middle order to deal with Imad. He didn’t go for Chapman because he wasn’t convinced about his availability for the tournament. Bracewell must have confirmed full availability to their coaches.

That's so stupid, imagine being haunted by one guy 🤣🤣.

Just hire a good team and problem solved 😭😭.

The issue with Ali Tareen is that he's too focused on countering one or 2 players as well as trying to save costs of hiring more overseas players.

The issue with MS was never Imad Wasim. Yes im sure last year's defeat Haunts them courtesy of Imad, but imad would have been useless had the team been remotely competent.

Even in the last year final, look at how the opening captain played. It's a final and this is your approach to modern day league cricket?

Maybe if he got rid of rizwan, chacha, shai hope and tried investing in players other then David willey then maybe you'd have a solid team.

MS got lucky last year due to Usman Khan hitting a purple patch mode. Once that faded away the team was bound to collapse.

This guy has a really small-minded way of thinking of that was his rationale. You can't base your planning for a tournament based on how you will do against a specific team. That's childish thinking.

Babar was so badly out of form coming into this tournament that he could have fallen to any bowler, let alone someone he has an unfavorable match-up with. And all due respect to Imad but the guy is 36 now and in the fag end of his professional career. And he ain't exactly the second coming of Derek Underwood. The fact that he has MS shaking in their boots is pretty funny. Especially since Ali Tareen claims he is a fraud.
