What's new

[PICTURES] Is Virat Kohli the greatest ODI run chaser in history?

Bevan hardly got a chance to chase a target in a knockout match. Though he did play an absolutely brilliant inning in the 96 WC semifinal against red hot WI when Australia was in deep trouble.

So to become a great ODI chaser, you have to perform in the first innings?

:ibutt

Forget being best chaser, he will end up as best ODI player ever. This notion to be regarded as greatest he needs to win a world cup with a century is ridiculous .

He is consistently greater than any other player who has donned an ODI uniform.

Virat Kohli can't chase?

Last I heard, Kohli tuhsey chase nahin hogan. Does anyone want more proof whether he can chase or not? :))

He is batting first here. Any expert comments? ":P

He wasn't able to chase in the match where the quote is from. In noway does was the quote a general remark on Kohli's chasing abilities.

It was based on a bilateral series after the CT.

If anything you cannot accuse Kohli of not being able to chase. Especially when he hasn't had to actually chase anything substantial in this series, apart from the first match which is quite normal according to his standards. Try again.

Kohli is now proving that he is not just a chaser. He is a 1st innings basher too.

But the 2nd greatest opener of all time Amla scored a remarkable 1 chasing 304 today. But then again, every other player is allowed to have off days except Kohli.

But, Kohli tujse chase nahin hoga!

Dude get the wording of the quote right!

It's "Kohli! nahi hota tujhse chase." it's from the CT final during the last part of the Pakistani innings when Kohli was fielding on the bounday, look it up on YouTube.

The exact wordings of the quotes are important because it is a battle cry. The weakling calling out the heavyweight champion. It represents the courage to take the bull by its horns. It's poetry and a piece of art at the same time.

Couldn't chase it in the all important ICC final vs Pakistan. Got out 2 times in consecutive deliveries. :)

No one can argue about his bilateral record, but ICC final is more important, if it's against Pakistan it becomes THE most important game.

No doubt he’s in contention for being the GOAT. But he bottled it dearly on June 18th even after being given a reprieve.

Yea, sure. Just like how India was better than Pakistan in the 90's based on the results of the WC's in that era, right? :P

In 90s, yes. Against Pakistan was a big game.

But since then, cricket has changed. IPL attracts more people than any other matches except world cup.

So no. Pakistan became another country to play with.

Though with no home cricket, to Pakistan it became a necessity to play against India for cash.

Pakistanis are going too much far based on 1 CT final. Kohli will dominate Pak bowlers 7 out of 10 times. He is the best chaser of era,the best ODI batsman of his generation.

Lol, yes great batsmen succeed every single innings every single time. You guys are clutching at the thinnest of straws here

So one single sample is what you are going on? Not even the dumbest of dumb person uses one single sample match to judge anything. That too chasing 340. One single match can be anything, bad form, bad luck, bad day.

And no, matches against Pak are no longer important for Indians

You need to bring out your zen game here. Abhi toh shuruaat hai.
The ct trophy gonna get polished for the next 10 yrs at the least.

These replies show clear signs of PTSD.
All these replies are the effect of the worst defeat in an ICC final by India's arch rivals.

Dismissing 1 failure of of Kohli in an all important ICC final that 600 million + people watched, is pretty idiotic.
Kohli averages 22 in the ICC finals anyway.

When Indians are faced with stressful situations they cannot handle at the time, we resort to various coping mechanisms.
Everytime there's talk of Pakistan vs India historical record, Indians always bring up the stats of ICC tournaments and dismiss the superior record of Pakistan, that's 73-52.
Now when it comes to their favorite player Kohli, they ignore the ICC tournaments and laud the bilaterals, no doubt he's an all Time great player already in bilaterals, but let's see how he does in the next ICC final he plays.

It's okay If that helps you sleep at night.

Just to add credence to your post, Kohli was out in 2 consecutive balls in the CT17 final. ;)

Had he chased it down, he would have been the indisputable GOAT already.

Thread is meaningless to be honest.

 • This dude is averaging 68 in batting second. 2nd average is not even within 10 runs of it.
 • He has 21 tons while batting second. 2nd best number of tons is 17, with double the number of matches.
 • When he hangs his boot, it's quite likely that Kohli may have more tons in chase than tons by next three batsmen taken together.

Even kohli haters know he is GOAT chasing but they won’t accept it since he is indian.. If he was from any other country no one on PP would argue he is the GOAT chaser in ODI.. That is a fact..

The usual haters will find some excuse or irrelevant stat to deny it but the world recognises him to be The best.. Viv’s comment seals the deal..

Having said that he still needs a savage 2019 WC to be regarded as the GOAT odi batsmen let’s hope he helps us win that..
Indiafan argue with haters in their language, kohli is not GOAT chaser since he didn’t score Runs against my grandma.. That’s the language they will understand..

He doesn't have a match winning hundred while chasing on my birthday. So, he is not a great chaser.

Agreed.

GOAT ODI chaser has been in the bag for a long time. It's not even close.

Two things are left and he'll become the undisputed GOAT ODI batsman too.

1) Good ENG tour
2) One big performance in a WC knockout match

That's all.

^1 isn't even relevant anymore. 2 is important or atleast being a top2 run scorer in a WC.

In Eng, he averages 50+ with 90+ SR. Not bad at all. Why a good tour of Eng?

With Kohli in his present form, the Indians have become a scary Team for the opponents !!!!!!!!!

If there is anyone else who have done similar or better than Kohli while Chasing then it can be argued upon. But according my to knowledege there isn't a single player who have record even remotely closed to Kohli's. Seems there isnt anyone who can challenge Kohli for this claim, we all have to agree with it that Kohli is indeed GOAT while chasing.

He have more than 90% of success rate while chasing whenever he crossed 3 digit score.

The Greatest.

This man will rewrite history boooks.

And he is only my age!!! If he has the longevity of Tendulkar then I shudder to think the numbers this man will put up.

Maybe the first to 100, hundreds in ODIs, or somewhere close to that definitely.

All those bashing Kohli for not chasing in big tournaments, it can be forgiven upon obviosuly he is only human after all.

The guy can't chase in every single game, his teammates have to step up when he feels the heat.

THe man cannot be a computer all the time.

He looked under pressure in the CT final, his teammates should've stepped up since he had dual responsbilities of captaining and batting in the game.

Thats too much pressure even for an invincible guy like Kohli

Kohli needs 156 runs to complete 1000 international runs in this tour.

Only one guy has done that before - Sir Viv Richards against England during the magical 1976/77 tour.

Thought i would put it there for everyone to digest. Many people dont even score 1000 international runs in their lifetime on 3-4 South African tours.

It doesnt matter ... the filter finders will find some new obscure filter on SG to troll. Notice how the usual suspects who were trolling before the start of the SAF tour licking their fingers chomping at their bits eager to troll expecting SAF to whitewash India have now gone back into their woodwork. This has been happening for a while now :))

They are in the process of finding new filter criteria on which Kohli can be put down. They will come . Otherwise it is boring.

Better question is , is he the goat odi batsman ever?

Yes like he did it three times in three match ODI series at home against Junaid Khan in 2012-13. :smith

But CT final should have been important.

Bhai, that was 5-6 years ago. Do you believe that a player can not improve in that duration?

He bashed them in the CT in first encounter. Wish India had opted to bat first in the final. Anywho combination bad luck like noball , middle order form went against India. In last weeks we found final was just an aberration. Owning no.1 team in their backyard singlehandedly.

Actually, I want them to come with new criteria. It will be fun. Most probably they would come with CT/WC performances. If they have a bad day, they will show excuse of test performances in ENG even though this thread is about ODIs.

I think you missed the criteria that Proactive_ came up with ... according to the dude 95% of Bilateral ODIs mean nothing. :))

Undoubtedly he has become one of the greatest batsman in ODIs atleast.

The only thing which undermines his performances a bit is the changing nature of cricket. Flat surfaces, there other players who are averaging in 50s and late 40s. There are different kind of feild restrictions during the innings, two new balls so ball is hard even later in the innings and its easier to hit and very few skillful bowlers can reverse the ball. Things like that need to be considered. Yes its not his headache and he is doing the job in whatever kind game conditions given to him. But 7 double hundreds have been scored in last 6,7 years, so things have changed.

So considering this to me Viv averaging 47 with SR of 90 in that era or Zaheer avg 47.62 with SR of 85 are no less considering the nature of the game was very different then and batting wasnt as easy considering the pitches, bats, reverse swing etc.

The way cricket has been changed its pretty difficult to compare some one from pre 2000s era with post 2012 era but I guess all here know about the game called cricket.

Is Virat the best ODI player in this decade, absolutely but is he the best ever there was in ODIs, its still arguable and Virat cant be blamed but the game has changed.

A true great of the modern game. He hasn't been able to step-up in knockout games as much as he would like but that shouldn't be held against him too much. He's human after all.

He's already an ATG in ODI cricket.

While it is mostly odious to compare across eras, there are a few types of comparisons that, IMO while not perfect, can be made with some validity.

For example- In this series against a leading ODI side, comprising some of the best players in the world, in their home ground, Virat Kohli was in all likeliness the difference between a 5-1 win for India and a possible 4-2/ 3-2 loss.

If you think about it, this is a staggering accomplishment in a team game. I don't know when this could be said about SRT, or- given that he played in a team of giants- even Viv Richards. Should be an interesting discussion.

Sachin did similar things quite a few times. 1998 Sharjah is the story of one man army SRT, so was India's run in 96 and 2003 World Cups. Kohli will no doubt rewrite record books but Kohli always has had much better team than Sachin ever had in his peak.

Until last year, Champions Trophy was a pointless and dying tournament that should have been scrapped ages ago(Hint: India won). But for some mysterious reason, now it is ranked alongside WT20 and WC by the same set of fans. :))

So much so that for Federer to be considered GOAT , he has to perform in a CT final.

This title is an insult. Kolhi is the best in all ODIs. It's like saying he is great bar XYZ. It's unfair.

In 1983 world cup, Viv Richards got out and could not chase india's sub par total. Does that mean he is not good ?

That logic applies only vs Kohli :shh, he has to perform in all conditions in all matches all the time

If one agrees or not but Kohli has already done enough to be called ATG and greatest run chaser.
i dont think so anyone would have done it on regular basis.

Yes gareed.no way Kohli would have won here in SA with that trash 1998 team.

By the way, that Kaif tweet is fake news. :trump2

Someone on social media posted it as a joke and Kaif didn't realise that it wasn't true.

You could be true. Michael Holding has such a huge ego, add to that he has an intense dislike for India and the BCCI. It's hard to believe he would say something like that on air.

Agreed, Holding really not enjoyed ODI series as India was doing good. Holding, Pommi and Heysman all were trying to praise India, but no one was convincing. Small passage of good play from SA was hailed and much bigger achievements from India were non events for them

Too much hype for no reason in this series. The highest total India had to chase in this series was 269 and almost all batsman did well and contributed at some point or the other.

The leggies are the real MVP of this series and should get much more appreciation than any of the batsmen.

I read the posts here and feel that a lot of people have not played cricket at any substantial level because not many seem to realise how ridiculous it is to average 90+ over 3 years in ODI cricket. Nothing except genius from Virat to be so consistent at the top level

He will chase whatever target is set by opposition whether its under or over 300.
