[PICTURES] Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (2019/20) | Round 1 | 14th-17th Sep, 2019 | Matches Thread

Sad that Haris Rauf, Saif Badar and Kamran Ghulam didn’t make the playing XIs.

Fans throng stadiums on the opening day of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Lahore, 14 September 2019:

It was the attraction of watching Babar Azam bat which brought Mujahid Saleem to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Mujahid is amongst a strong contingent of young cricket fans who have turned out to watch the cream of Pakistan first-class cricket compete.

To bridge the gap between the cricketers and their fans, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has opened the gates of the venues, staging Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, for the fans to watch their stars up-close.

“I have only come here to watch Babar Azam bat,” says Mujahid, a resident of Rawalpindi who is based in Murdike these days. “I want to click a selfie with him. He is the best player in international cricket at the moment.

“This is a brilliant gesture by the PCB to open the gates for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. This is the pinnacle of domestic cricket and this is where future stars are born.”

Perched in the Abdul Hafeez Kardar stand with his friend, Mujahid, an ardent cricket fan, plans to show up until he gets his desired fulfilled.

To the surprise of Mujahid and other fans, Pakistan Test bowler Shaheen Afridi showed up for a meet and greet. As soon as he arrived in the stands, the fans thronged the lanky paceman to click pictures and take autographs.

“It is good to see the fans turn out and watch Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. This promises to be an exciting season for which fans and players are equally excited.” said Shaheen.

College students, dressed in their uniforms, had been pouring in the stands since early morning. When Jamshed Ali, who is pursuing a degree in medicine, was asked why he was at the stadium instead of his classroom, he grinned and said: “Actually, our teacher had not come today so all of us friends decided to come at the Gaddafi Stadium to watch the match.”

At the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi, Pakistan all-rounder Anwar Ali met the fans and urged them to keep populating the stands throughout the 2019-20 season.

The PCB will provide free entry to cricket fans around the country in every Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match.

My point is extremely important. Tell me how many batsmen of U19 2016 and 2018 WC have done well at first class level? None of them.

The quality batsmen isn't coming and it is very evident watching this match.

I can't believe the Pakistan team isn't full of 20-22 year olds. I mean I could site Rohail Nazir or Ali Zaryab, or Zeeshan Malik and Saif Badar who are players who show promise from 2016 and 2018 but of course only 4 years out of the WC they aren't all playing international cricket there are a lot teams who don't have young players in that age bracket dominating their cricket-like England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand who often the youngest batsmen in their teams are 26 years old.

What the heck are you talking?

No is asking them to play international cricket. Actually 90% of Indian batsmen debut at the age 20-24 year old.India have likes of Rishab Pant, Shaw and shubman Gill smashing in the first season. Saif Badar and Zeeshan Malik are avearging 21and 15 for last three seasons

The quality isn't there

Haris Rauf and others youngsters should be given a chance instead of tried and tested failures.

India are the exception to the norm there isn't young talent coming out of any country to the extent that it is coming out of India. Get used to them dominating international cricket for mant decades to come. But you know what making the Pakistan FC competition smaller and paying the players less is totally going to save Pakistan cricket.

Sohail Tanvir is a good friend of M Wasim. He get to play ahead of Haris Rauf despite playing 8 FC in four years.

Actucally I think reducing 6 teams isn't the solution. Paying so less is a disaster waiting to happen, I have pointed this out on other threads as well.

With gym trainer Mickey gone sami aslam must be hopeful of making a comeback to national side. I believe he’s better than shan and abid especially if he gets his mindset sorted

Good to see most sides playing two spinners- Pakistan will reap the rewards.

Grounds look empty and PCB are saying fans are thronging to the grounds :)

The livestream on YouTube is a massive upgrade to whatever that has been done before.

That's a major plus.

Yes there relationship wasn't the best.

Fresh start for Sami.

According to Babar's interview at the toss, he will bat at number 5. I think this is too low for him considering his class and futute of Pak test team. Should atleast bat at number 4.

Do you have an update on the Northern v KPK match?

Apart from Northern

All other teams have depressing line ups. No young bowler and batsman to look forward to

PCB has done well to lend respectability to domestic cricket. The pitches look good and even-sided. The coverage and commentary is good and even the outfield looks nice and well-cut. For the first time it feels like domestic first-class cricket matters.

Should have live scoreboard coverage on cricinfo and on the pcb website from all three matches. That should not be hard to do.

Watching live at qadafi stadium. Noticed umar akmal giving morsels to babar, tough leading this team for babar.

MMHS your views on Sami Aslam?

Surprisingly playing positively today - I was sleeping most part of his innings after lunch, but won't be a bad choice against SRL in UAE, because he is better against spin than Imam, and better against Fakhar against moving ball. But, there are too many lefti openers in PCT these days which needs to be changed - if Azhar is considered in XI (In AUS), I'll take Shan-Azhar partnership, for the time being.

Thanks for the response. Yeah agreed. But, the sooner we get rid of Azhar the better. He looks to be past it now.

Who says srilanka is going to play in the uae?

Lets be realistic, otherwise unnecessarily you'll be heart broken. Still the time hasn't come for PAK hosting Test series at home - first PCB has to arrange a full PSL in PAK.

And, don't back much on ICC awarding PAK walk-over points, if SRL declines to tour PAK - at most, they'll award 50%-50%, which'll isolate PAK more and the other two teams (scheduled to play away series in PAK for ICC Test Championship) will take the easy route - decline to tour PAK and enjoy 60 away points without even sweating.

Remarkable how much progress can be made when you have competent and ambitious people running things.

But according to some Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani are stooges and the PCB was going to fall apart without Sethi.

Proper kookabora balls and suddenly every bowler turns useless... this will be the proper test for the likes of saddaf hussain and waqas masood and tabbish khan who were the giants of domestic and crying abt not getting chances...

Exactly lol. Lets see what they do this year. The scores are already looking good for the games.

The quality of the pitch looks poor plus both Zafar and Asif are very ordinary spinner. Boring match.

Good sign for Pakistan in terms of openers, 3 century’s by 3 openers already.

I really wish the pcb would show all matches on YouTube and maybe give free tickets to school kids so we have a crowd

Given how little time they have had, they've done a good job getting the pitches ready. It will be interesting to see how this pitch (and the others) play as the match goes on. Pitch is slow but the bounce has been okay so far. For future seasons, I imagine the pitches will get even better and have more zip (to provide a balance between bat and ball). In the short term, at least it will get players more ready for UAE pitches than pitches in previous years.

Ideally, every ground will have its own subtle variation.

Entry is free :)

1/3 of FC matches are streamed on Youtube with commentary and six cameras. Hopefully will expand for next season but it's an excellent start.

And now you can actually differentiate the wicket from the outfield...

All TTF's will be give ample opportunity by Misbah and co to keep their position in playing 11 and keep youngsters warming the benches.

Woke up to watch Naseem Shah's opening spell, only to see Faheen Asharf and Maqsood playing.
khurram Manzoor, another big failure at international level, scored another ton at torturing pace.

That's because they are no longer getting their freebies and backhanders.

Zafar Gohar is the most overated bowler, no wonder he didn't get selected for Pakistan. Zulfiqar Babar and Kashif Bhatti had better much stats than him in last season

Pretty Sick yorker from Hassan Ali and it looked out... but not given

Sami Survives?

Sadly, these same people will be sharpening their knives ahead of the Australia tour. Will no doubt be complaining the new domestic structure hasn't produced instant results.

Youngsters will get their chance. Wait for the oldies to fail then they'll come

These pitches are decent but already better. The batting is scoring way more runs, which is great for teaching technique and patience + exposed all the trundlers.

I think, on this track classical finger spinners won't enjoy much - there is not enough bounce. On such wickets, Kashif & Zulfi will always do better, because they don't flight much and don't depend much on spin/drift either. For a check, look at Imad's FC bowling record on such tracks.

Every team should be forced to include two young (under 23( or emerging players otherwise oldies will keep denying development of youngsters. It is early days.

Yup poor pitches. No wonder our bowlers struggle to bowl in Australia or South Africa

It's day one on a flat wicket.

And nearly chopped on!

I have just tuned in but Sami has survived twice in that short time.

Only 84 overs in the day is poor stuff unless there has been an interruption.

sadaf hussain is 30 now , unfair to test him now after he has toiled away his best years in domestic cricket.

So old players are recycling again and again but this time less opportunities for young players. Our 2023 squad will be full of experience old players.

Must say pretty decent wicket for CP and SP match. Other than the new ball, bowlers had to work hard and batsmen had the chance to play long innings. Spinners might come into play in day 3,4.
