PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Feb, 2018 ): Legendary cricketer Imran Khan laid down foundation stone of the Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium by reconstructing it according to international need with all facilities costing Rs. 1.39 billion here Tuesday. We all know that all of our stadiums suffered massively due to the abscence of International Cricket in Pakistan and one of the ICC stipulations is that a high quality 5 star hotel needs to be close to the Cricket Stadium in a city.

Right now i would say only the Qadhaffi Stadium in Lahore and National Stadium in Karachi are close to meeting international standards, the work on the roof of the National Stadium in Karachi is still not complete and the PCB is really racing against the clock, i doubt whether the work on the roof will be complete in time. It has cost the PCB close to Rs 1-2 billion to uplift the stadium so it is clear that its not going to be a cheap undertaking

But what about the other stadiums? Can the entire PSL realistically just be held in Lahore and Karachi? That will not be wise at all, it has to be held all over Pakistan with home and away matches between Franchises to make the tournament even more interesting and spicy

But what is the present situation of the following stadiums in Pakistan

1) Raffi Stadium in Bahria Town, Karachi
2) Defence Stadium, Karachi, Phase V
3) Hyderabad Stadium
4) Arbab Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, Sindh
5) Islamabad Stadium
6) Rawalpindi Stadium
7) Multan Cricket Stadium
8) Sialkot Cricket Stadium
9) Faisalabad Cricket Stadium
10) Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar
11) Ayub National Stadium, Quetta
12) Gwadar Cricket Stadium
13) Muzzafarabad Cricket Stadium

It is clear that the bulk of these stadiums are not ready right now and need massive renovation in terms of facilities, infrastructure, pitches? Does the PCB have the finances required (Rs 20 billion minimum) to upgrade most of these stadiums on a war footing by next year. Are these stadiums close to an international 5 star hotel?

If it's a big city there should certainly be a good hotel in the vicinity.

Needn't be 5-star - I'm sure some of the BPL teams like Khulna and Rangpur aren't home to any 5-star hotels.

Yeah I get a feeling stadiums are something that PCB has been neglecting while trying to bring all of PSL back to Pakistan. We should have at least two stadiums other than in Karachi and Lahore otherwise the initial excitement in these cities will begin to fade. Ideally we can begin work on completely renovating four stadiums to international quality while renovating National and Gaddafi Stadium for PSL 5 to have one home ground for each team. Let's see what they do but hosting whole PSL in Karachi and Lahore would be very bad move. I'd rather see Karachi, Lahore, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi then.

When will they make a proper stadium in Pakistan, like an Australian one or Eden park. More crowds can come to the stadium and the atmosphere is even better as much of the noise stays in the stadium, making it louder.

Pakistani stadiums rarely filled out like Indian stadiums. In test matches half the stadium always used to be empty in Lahore & Karachi and completely empty in Multan. So making huge new stadiums is probably the last thing on PCB's mind, especially considering how scant international cricket is in Pakistan and how cash-strapped they are

Much needed renovation for Rawalpindi stadium. The stadium was/is in horrible shape.

Ofcourse not. Should split it halfway with the uae.

Yes this seems like the more plausible situation. Going from a quarter of the matches being held in Pakistan to all of them seems unrealistic. Half and half would be better, however PCB should look to have 4 Pakistani venues.

Yup, Karachi Lahore Multan and Pindi, the rest of the stadiums are still undergoing renovation and some cities dont even have 5 star hotels unfortunately.

Then in future seasons it can go to Sialkot and Peshawar once its main stand is complete.

Current State of Stadiums, PSL readiness

Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi are all ready to go. All have PC Hotels, up to date stadiums and airports.

Hyderabad: Pearl Continental Hotel will be constructed, MOU signed. Hopefully this means cricket comes back to the Niaz stadium in 4-5 years if renovated, not before 2024. Airport closed to traffic since 2013.

Multan: PC hotel is almost complete, stadium undergoing light renovation that should be done by 2020. Airport operational.

Mirpur City: PC hotel is almost complete, Unfortunately there is no airport in Mirpur, and recent earthquake damaged the stadium and forced the 2XI Quaid-E-Azam Trophy matches to be moved.

Muzaffarad: Has a PC hotel and good stadium, the airport should reopen within a few months.

Peshawar: Arbab Niaz stadium renovation should be complete by 2021, and its close to a PC hotel. Airport operational.

Faisalabad: 4 Star Serena Hotel close by, Iqbal stadium would need renovation. Airport operational.

Quetta: 4 Star Serena Hotel, Bugti stadium would need an update. Airport operational.

Sialkot: No decent hotels, Jinnah Stadium needs renovation. Airport operational.

*All PC Hotels are 5 star hotels.

Multan should be easy for PCB. The stadium was in pretty good shape and shouldn't require any significant work.

Lol, no way this stadium will be ready. Disgraceful condition

Only for venue for psl. Multan, pindi, karachi and lahore. Maybe next psl arbab niaz and rafi stadium will be ready

First year should be restricted to Karachi, Lahore and Pindi --- I think Faisalabad deserves a shout after how they hosted the NT20

Is it possible for Quetta to play home considering safety? which stadium is their home ground?

psl needs home n away matches to progress further and another team. I wonder if there will be 8 teams in future like ipl

AFAIK Faisalabad stadium looked like it was built in the stone ages, not dissimilar to Arbab Niaz stadium. It should be heavily renovated if we play there again.

Looks good, fresh coat of paint and media end done.

Sialkot stadium ground is good but enclosures are in pretty bad condition. The vicinity is poor , the stadium is near the fruit mandi and is quite dirty.

One more thing that should be considered is that a part of city is locked down when there are matches going. Currently, people coming from Rawalpindi to Islamabad for their offices either reach late or work from home. People in Lahore and Karachi faced similar kind of issues if I am wrong.

This model will not on long-term basis and some alternative should be considered. People who live around the Rawalpindi Stadium are paying big price. They have to prove their identity before they are allowed to enter the area.

From what people are saying here, the PCB needs to put its hands in its pockets and upgrade quite a few of the stadiums in Pakistan.

Safe to say that all the stadiums are in a pathetic condition.

Even the flagship LHR stadium has poor enclosures, not anywhere close to international standards.

Previous PCB regimes are by and large to blame for the state of disrepair of the stadia.

No international cricket seemed to be an excuse not to invest in the stadia.

The problem is even now they are not significantly upgrading the stadiums. The upgrades they have made are minor in the grand scheme of things. They can do 1-2 stadiums per year, starting off with NSK and GSL. The upgrades they did with NSK don't seem to have effected the enclosures too much, other than a fresh coat of paint maybe. They need more extensive upgrades.

This is the consequences of no international cricket for a decade. Hopefully with international team started coming, stadium will get better.

Rawalpindi stadium looked very outdated and pathetic. Both Tests should have been in Karachi

Agree, weather is much better in Karachi these days too, very short flight for Srilankans. SL team could have made a short trip back home between the tests too.

You can't really blame PCB because no one thought cricket especially Test cricket would return to Pakistan until 2030

How are Pakistan stadiums being upgraded?

We hear thar stadiums are being upgraded but what exactly is upgraded?

Look at Pindi stadium, it was supposedly renovated but still we see cement seats, yellowish ground and drainage system abysmal. Rs 1 billion was used to upgrade NCS but a little session of rain was sufficent enough for a washout

I was watching a video of Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium having this Sub Air System for quick drainage of water

We are still using vipers and towlel, no wonder India is ranked no 1 and PAK is at 8th.

The state of our stadiums perfectly reflect the state of Pakistan cricket - we have reached the deepest pit of mediocrity.

Apart from Babar, there is nothing positive about Pakistan cricket. Absolutely nothing.

How can PCB expects Australia, England and South Africa to tour Pakistan for a test series with such an infrastructure? Where does all the money go?

According to PCB several stadiums are having upgrades done at the moment. Any evidence of this?

It is limited to media house, dressing rooms.

The ground looked so yellowism(no proper grass), cement seats and poor drainage system. NSK had over Rs1 billion used yet little session of rain and the match was a washout, water leakage from the stadium roof and water seaping into media houses:danish

Seems like a nice media booth.

But people sitting on cemented seats? How can you watch 5 day games like that?

^^^Utterly shameful

They can't spend money to put proper seating. Embarrassing to say the least

3rd class stadium. This stadium is mostly suited for club cricket

No dissrespect but watching the photos of stadiums it's better to make playground for kids.

When your only priority are having good relations with media personalities and not the fans then stadiums like this are constructed. No one in PCB gives a damn about ghareeb admi who spends his savings just to get the glimps of their stars.

Really sad to see.

Looks like very little or no investment in the viewing experience for fans.

It's absolutely embarrassing whenever I see pictures of most Pakistani grounds to be blunt. These concrete jungle eyesores are such unattractive venues for cricket and this one is no different with all due respect to the locals. I'd rather they knocked the whole thing down than waste it on a media centre.

If you want to attract crowds, then you need to make the matchday experience enjoyable. At some grounds in New Zealand and South Africa there are grass banks on where children can play cricket with one another. In England you have areas where the Barmy Army congegrate to create an atmosphere. There are food and drink vendors, big screens to watch replays, and so on.

We are so behind in so many aspects, but hopefully as international cricket returns PCB can make improvements.

it really is a matter of shame what did pcb do in last 10 years when there was no cricket in Pakistan ?

Its hard to maintain a stadium when there are no international matches and no PSL matches are being played. International cricket is returning and also PSL, hope a big improvement in next 1-2 years.

Places with much better weather ( except in Dec-Jan ) deserve some decent new stadiums, particularly, Islamabad, Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad ( or all abads ) .

Wow, more capacity in media booth than public enclosure. No game is being played for last three days but media people are enjoying a " busy time at the job ".

Pakistan might be the only top 10 team (except Afg) to not have a single two tiered stadium. Even cities with huge population like Lahore and Karachi have stadiums that will fill up for 25k people. Even Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have two tiered stadia. PCB must renovate atleast GSL and NSK into multi tiered venues.

I would imagine it is very hard to turn a stadium that was planned to be 1 tier into a 2 tiered stadium, there are probably legitimate structural reasons why it cannot happen.

Also even if they could, they definitely won't do it in Karachi as they just spent a lot of money upgrading the roof last year.

Forget about seating or draining system which required more budget allocation.

What about grass? It is not expensive to maintain properly. College level grounds looks better than this ground.

When I watching in TV I thought something wrong with screen resolution.
Later I understood.

I am sure I have been reading for years how much has been spent on different stadiums, so what was that money spent on?

Pakistani stadiums are like coliseum (minus the character and history). They require a lot of caring but at the end of the day they are remnants of an era gone by.

If I'm not wrong , the Premadasa stadium in Colombo was a single tiered ground up until 2005. But now it's a two tiered stadium with 40k capacity.

I agree it takes time but you have to do it someday. Atleast for Lahore and Karachi.

A couple of psl tourneys at home should improve this, although it should not have gotten to this stage in the first place, basic maintainece should be mandatory regardless of international cricket.

And Karachi already has 35k capacity, and gaddafi 27k.
Whereas dubai only has 15k.
Tiers are deceptive.

Arbab Niaz Stadium is going to be two tier stadium once the stadium is fully renovated

Hard to spend gigantic sums of money to maintain, upgrade stadiums when no one is coming to flock them and when there is no international Cricket in the country

Yes you are right. Premadasa went form a capacity of 14k to 40k!

Even if they do it, it'll be in Lahore which is okay, since Rafi Stadium in Karachi (which will have a capacity of 50,000) is supposed to open in 2021.

Can't blame the PCB that much. They were having to pay huge amounts of money to schedule games in the UAE, I doubt they had enough money left over to justify upgrading stadiums where there may not have been cricket for a while.

Pakistan missed the crucial 10 years of infra development in cricket. Subcontinent's stadiums underwent substantial change WC11 onwards. Quantity if not quality has improved. Pakistan is stuck in 2009.

Amidst all the negative talk i must say that Rafi stadium is beautiful and one of the best in the world

I remember when we toured Pakistan for Jit lo dil series in 2004 i felt envious of Pakistani stadiums. They looked very nice. They had just newly developed the Multan stadium.. They had those big LCD screen which was a new thing back then even Indian stadiums didn't have them at the time.

You're right, from 2007 onwards Indians stadium went through a major infrastructural.upgrade. I feel proud of so many state of art stadiums coming up now in even tier 2 cities who look even better than our traditional stadiums in metro cities.

When so much money is generted through this game turning these below poverty people into rich Rockstars living in mansions and driving fancy cars overnight then it's simply criminal not to invest the money back on the grounds from where it all began. Its after all the money spent by the same people who come to see cricket.

Dude it's not even 25% done

Se goes for Nonu who hasn't even born yet but we still love him like anything.

Rafi stadium is inevitable. When it will be ready it will automocally become the best stadium in Indian subcontinent
