[PICTURES/VIDEO] Abdullah Shafique needs to be our flagship batter going forward

guy is definition of timid and weakness. He sucks the blood out of innings, only for himself. Even if he pulls something special today, he belongs no where near white ball
 
How is he still playing for Pakistan?

One of the worst ever to represent Pakistan

Though I was not happy with Abdullah’s selection for NZ tour, but now that he has been picked again, it makes sense to give him 2 more series.

He is a good player. Just very low on mental fortitude. We have to remember he hasn't had the chance to grow organically. Most of his career has been in the Pakistan team or travelling alongside side them years.

He is operating in a bubble of fear and cowardice due to being created in a culture where things are ever present.

Will he be able to overcome it? That remains to be seen. I am hopeful but it won't happen with Rizwan and Aqib at the helm. We need someone who can build up his confidence.
 
PCB needs to implement a rule where if a player isn't playing greater than 50% of the matches for their PSL franchise they aren't playing cricket for Pakistan

Guys like Imam and Abdullah aren't deemed good enough to play long term for their franchises but can saunter into our LOI set ups.

They need to be given a kick up the backside to go and develop themselves and their games.

Faheem Ashraf has a stronger mental fortitude than the top 33 cricketers of KPK (maybe not Fakhar), so top 32

It’s not his fault that he isn’t from Khyber Pakhtun Choke.

Hardly. Such players are dime a dozen in other countries as well.

He may have some natural ability especially against short balls but it's extremely difficult to overcome as may weaknesses as he does at this stage in his career .

Can't play deliveries in the channel , can't hard play hard lengths , gets strangled by deliveries going down leg , can't attack leg spin or left arm spin.

And this is just from the PSL. He's an extremely limited batter even at that level

In the past, I used to mock him (like Devadwal does nowadays) for supporting certain players. I believed he was biased and over critical of the players who formed the core in the Pakistan team, but later I understood that he wanted Pakistan to play attacking style of cricket, in line with the rest of the cricketing world. He has watched a lot of domestic leagues, allowing him to grasp the contemporary approach to limited overs cricket.

@Devadwal Started watching cricket from 2020 onwards and has no clue about it.

For someone who flexed about watching it since 2003 he has virtually no clue about the likes of Malcolm Marshall, Glenn Mcgrath, Ponting, Dennis Lillie, Lara, Viv and how good these guys were.

Anyone who claims Bumrah is > Marshall and Mcgrath based of economy when

A) Bumrah plays in crickets worse test batting era with the exception of smith, as the other 2 best batters root is a 2nd tier test batter compared to lara, viv and others and Williamson is bang avg and not worth a discussion, compared to the likes of Mcgrath and Marshall who have 20-21 avg but have faced the likes of sunny, Sachin, Dravid, Lara, Chanderpaul and many other proper test batters has no idea about the past.

Bumrah is no 1 t20 bowler of all time, top 5 odi bowlers of all time and top 10 test bowler of all time and no 1 all format bowler(test,odi and t20) But no 1 is delusional.

This is a guy who can't take a 10 fer in test due to his crap stamina and poor performance with the old ball and can't figure out an avg test NZ side atm.

B) Similarly he cant seem to figure out that Kohli isn't a test atg and @Sachin fan had to educate him about India producing atleast 10 test batters > Kohli. Not a surprise since he probably never watched dravid, Sehwag or heck even Laxman who I view as bang avg bat.

C) nor does he seem to even be aware about the existence of Courtney Walsh, Malcolm Marshall and others.

Rana has called him a covid cricket fan which is correct. He has no knowledge about the game pre 2011.

Chanderpaul is a solid batsmen and one of the best their is?

The only reason he doesn't get into the odi atg or test wi atg team is cause wi use to be such a gun unit that chanderpaul seems lacking in that aspect. Since he's competing with lara, Gary Sobers, and viv Richards in the middle in test.

Otherwise not only did he win an icc trophy for windies, he's a solid cricketer. The only reason he's called an odi stat padder is because 90% of the time he had Lara, Gayle, Dwayne smith etc so he mostly rotated strike back to them.

Infact the coach literally told him to do so and he said on interviews multiple times that this was the role given to him to be a stabiliser. That historic one wicket win against Sri Lanka and a few other odi games have shown that he can take apart bowling and can be a very aggressive batsmen if push comes to shove?

He looks good when he connects and hits through the gap. But he rarely does that. There lies the problem. If he plays well within himself he can be a decent test batsman. In other formats he is not going to be your match winner. Openers should be match winners. cannot be used to see off balls.

He is a good number 3 in PSL. I was listening to some podcast and they shared his numbers at number 3. They are very good.

This creates a bigger problem going forward. If he cements number 3 as his, then you might see a top 3 of Babar, Rizwan and Abdullah in T20s considering those two will play every trick up their sleeve to return.

I think he needs to replace Babar in white ball cricket and be given a long rope, which I hope will help him overcome this fear of failure he has in head.

Agreed.

The guy isn’t an opener but is not bad for 3-4. Babar hasn’t played an innings like this at number 3 in T20s as far as I can recall.

Yeah definitely can't have him and Babar in the same team.

When it comes to pure batting skills, he's well ahead of Babar, who can't play spin to save his life.
 
I want to see Pakistani players when they get in to score big hundreds and to accelerate big time at the end like Rohit Sharma does successfully. To many Pakistani players play for themselves and then get out trying to score quickly and even Babar is sadly in that category.

He has more variety of shots than Babar, and he needs to be given full security about his place. He was very unfairly dropped from CT at home & test series against WI after 1 bad ODI series against SA.

In the current scenario Abdullah, Saud & Agha are the best batsman in the team. Abdullah & Saud must play all tests & ODIs and Agha should play all 3 formats. These 3 are under utilised by management because of preference given to Rizwan & Babar

What do you mean by even Babar? He’s by far the most overrated cricketer of all time.

Abdullah played a good knock but the problems are still there... He has to work on his technique still... Problems against short balls.
 
Neither is he an elite boundary hitter nor is he any good at strike rotation. That's not good enough for ODI cricket.

If he has an above par PSL, maybe should be given a run in the T20 side .

He will never be good enough to be your flagship batter in the longer formats.

Pakistan must start planning for the next ICC tournament by identifying a combination that has the best chance of succeeding in the conditions.

At the next T20 WC in India and Sri Lanka we'll need good players of spin in the middle order.

Abdullah has glaring deficiencies against pace but has performed superbly in places like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Tests. If he performs in PSL and bilaterals then he should be considered for the middle-order vacancy.

For the T20 team, here's a very rough template:

I agree with your template. Who would you regard as the best Pakistani batsman against pace, spin and overall in white ball cricket?
 
Needs to have this Free flowing approach in international cricket aswell. Had a really poor comeback series and that too on small grounds of NZ where even mishits and half timed lofted shots go for six.

Dont you always talk about performance in domestic? If he goes away and performs why not select him.

Azam doesn't have the fitness to succeed in cricket. It's very obvious. I don't mind giving Usman, Farhan etc a long run in the side they deserve it.

The difference is that Abdullah has at least delivered a bit in 2 formats. He has 5 test centuries and a world cup century. It shows he is no mug.

Saim averaged similar after 6.

I think it's obvious that despite your claims of wanting domestic cricket to be the barometer and give people long ropes that you just want your favorite players selected.

I think you're just throwing a tantrum because people aren't hyping up your favourite player.

Saim's situation was different he hadn't played ODIs or Tests up until that point. But this guy already has over 50+ appearances in international cricket. and be has failed

No tantrums - seems some players can never win in your eyes and it's interesting to see favouritism at play.

In those 50+ matches he has scored almost 20 50+ scores.

If he doesn't score in PSL you will call him a failure. If he scores you call him a failure anyway.

What should he do? Retire from cricket? Is there no room for redemption or comebacks.

The poster in question wanted Saim out of the team. Shows how much he knows about cricket. There is a solid player in abdullah for our standards if he starts playing freely.
