[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Aiden Markram - South African batting star

Markham has been a very big flop lately. There has been a lot of hype about him but he is yet to cement his presence.

Aiden Markram gutted to miss out on the opportunity to kick on

Aiden Markram has expressed disappointment at his failure to turn his second innings of 74 against Pakistan into a hundred.

MARKRAM DISAPPOINTED TO GIVE IT AWAY

Markram owned up to effectively sparking the collapse that killed off the Proteas challenge but sees the innings as a step in the right direction for himself and for South Africa.

“By no means am I all of a sudden a finished product. It’s a small step in the right direction. Thats how I am trying to see it,” he said. “There’s a still a lot of learning and growing in conditions like these. From a satisfaction thing, there is a bit I can take form this knock, a little bit of confidence. I would have loved to kick on.”

The opening batsman said that the side was learning from their past mistakes, both in the first innings and on previous trips. Markram and Rassie van der Dussen had threatened to frustrate Pakistan until bith fell in quick succession leaving the Proteas well off the pace.

“The longer you batted, the lower it got which posed its own challenge, putting spin aside. It was a slightly different innings for me. It was quite a challenge to accept spending time and not worrying about scoring,” Markram said.

“It’s generally very difficult for a new batter to get in. It’s something we’ve highlighted on previous tours to the subcontinent and on this tour. So (as a batsman) your first 20-30 balls are vital. It’s generally tough to get in against a spinning ball.”

BACKING YOURSELF IS THE KEY

Markram isolated backing your defence and getting to the pitch of the ball whenever possible as key to succeeding in Pakistan.

“On the mental side of things, there are times in South Africa in seamer-friendly conditions where you have to be brave and try something different. It’s the same here,” Markram said. “And we had the chance to learn from how Pakistan played and saw that we need to have the ability to back defence even in conditions that start to turn.

“It’s important that we don’t make the same mistakes we’ve made in previous tours,” he said. “The thing that helped me was spending time in the middle and feeling like you can find a way to score.”

The second Test between Pakistan and the Proteas will take place in Rawalpindi and gets underway on Thursday 4 February 2021.

He has the makings of a top class player . Still has work to do against spin. If he can overcome this and show patience like he did in the 2nd innings, he will have a very good test career.

He is 26, so he has time on his side. No reason why he can't live up to the hype he got initially. Very good against genuine pace but average vs spin.

JOHANNESBURG: Aiden Markram’s red hot form this season in both international and franchise cricket is poised to reach a further high point going into the climax of the 4-Day Domestic Series over the next couple of weeks.

The Proteas opening batsman was the leading runs scorer on either side in the Test series in Pakistan when he made 227 runs at an average of 56.75. This included his maiden Test century on the sub-continent, a significant achievement for any visiting player.

He has followed that with a scintillating run of form for the Momentum Multiply Titans in the four-day competition, culminating in his maiden first-class double century against the VKB Knights last week. It was not only an important milestone for him but also a match-saving innings that earned him a standing ovation from his opponents as he left SuperSport Park undefeated when time was called.

He potentially has two further opportunities to extend his rich run of form when the Titans cross the Jukskei River for their traditional derby fixture against the Imperial Lions followed by the probability of the competition final to be played over five days between the winners of the two pools. The Titans currently have a lead of almost 15 points in their pool.

To date Markram has 781 runs in the four-day competition for this season at an average of 97.62 with four centuries and a 50. The landmark of 1000 runs in a domestic season is a significant milestone that is well within his reach but what makes it even more so is that he has only played in six matches (with 10 innings) to date.

This immediately raises the prospect of a comparison with the legendary Barry Richards who twice scored more than 1000 runs in eight matches. If Markram can also get to 1000 in the eight matches available to him he will have put down a notable landmark for the rest of his career.

Markram highlighted his recent success in Pakistan as a key moment in his career. “I learned so much about how to build an innings under difficult circumstances and being prepared to wait for the opportunities. I have taken that forward with me in my return to franchise cricket. There were times again last week against the Knights when I just had to bat through difficult periods before picking the run rate up again.”

He also underlined how much he has benefited from batting together with new Proteas Test captain Dean Elgar both at franchise and international level. “Dean took me under his wing when I first came into the franchise and I can’t emphasize enough the influence for good he has had on my career.”

Now he is really looking forward to the clash with the Lions. “It is great for franchise cricket to have so many of our top players in action. Coming up against KG (Rabada) will be a huge challenge and, in fact, the Lions will be fielding what amounts to a Test match attack.

“It also means a huge amount to us as players that these games are being shown live on SuperSport,” he added.

Comparison between Markram and Richards in the top level of domestic first-class cricket

BA Richards: 1971/72 season: 8 matches, 15 innings, 1089 runs, highest score 219, average 77.78, 4 centuries and 4 50s

BA Richards: 1972/73 season: 8 matches, 16 innings, 1064 runs, highest score 197, average 70.93, 4 centuries and 5 50s

AK Markram: 2020/21 season: 6 matches, 10 innings, 781 runs, highest score 204*, average 97.62, 4 centuries and 1 50

SA's Test opener Aiden Markram has admitted that he did not expect to be recalled to the Proteas’ ODI squad for the series against Pakistan.

The limited overs series starts at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday and Markram‚ who last played ODI cricket for South Africa against Australia in 2019 at the ICC World Cup in England‚ is grateful for another opportunity to re-establish himself in the team.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting the call-up at all‚” he said.

“I understand that my white ball game hasn’t been where I would like it to be. In general you never expect selection and so is the case for myself.

"I am certainly grateful because white ball cricket is something that I enjoy. I am glad that the selectors and coaches still see me as a white ball player. So‚ I am grateful to be here.

“It has been quite some time since I have played 50 over cricket due to injuries‚ but at the moment it is about working on game plans that I am used to.

"I think it's more or less addressing things from the mental side‚ I don’t think too many changes [from the technical side].

"It is just about to back options that will work for me in the conditions that I am going to come across.”

His return to the squad means that the think tank will have to find space for him at the top of the batting order and he is willing to play anywhere in the top four.

"We are fortunate enough that we can still experiment a bit because I think 2022 is still a while away. A few discussions with the coaches and captain Temba Bavuma is to try and be quite versatile‚ so I probably see myself anywhere in the top four.

“I am comfortable anywhere in the top four‚ probably more comfortable up top for the time being. I would still like to know number three and four a little bit more and ultimately as a player you almost just happy to take whatever spot you have in the team.

"Those are the sorts of discussions that we have had since I joined the squad and hopefully if there is a gap somewhere I will take it and put big runs for the team.”

I still think he is a great talent and should be playing test and ODI'S for SA.

Ideally, in ODI'S they should be building with
QdK
J. Malan
Markram as the top three. It's a very good top 3 but I am sure they will mess it up with captain Bavuma somewhere in it.

Terrific tournament for Markram as he helped South Africa win 4 out of 5 matches. Hard luck, they played superb cricket this tournament.

Markram and Van der dussen are definitely stars.

The captain Bavuma experiment didn't worked for them, let's be honest with that.

Markram is solid batsman. He has great batting technique for tests and powerful game for limited overs cricket.Plus he can bowl some good overs. Worthy cricketer for RSA in all formats and their certain future captain.

Another failure today, should be under pressure for his spot.

Scores of 13, 1, and 7 so far in this series.

Markram's Test average has now dropped to 36.5 (28.2 over the last year), not good enough for this level at the moment. South Africa really need to give chances to Janneman Malan or Zubayr Hamza instead.

He doesn't have the technique to open in Tests....should bat in middle order

Had a poor series but he is still someone who will score a lot of runs in the future.
But keeping Malan out will become difficult now.

What a bad series he had. It was a low scoring innings so he didn't had to score 300 runs. Even 2 nice 40's could have made the job. Really disapointing.

Janneman Malan and Hamza should be brought into the test squad instead of Makram

looked awful in this test series, his lack of technic against moving ball has been exposed all series. Someone else needs to be tried out.

Perhaps he should move down the order?

He is a class player in my view.

He is just not good enough. He should be kicked out as soon as possible.

There's alot of talk about the best T20 batters on this forum but not enough talk about this guy. He may not have found his feet just yet in Tests and ODIs but since the last T20 World Cup he has stepped-up his T20 batting in a major way.

At present he is the only full-member player with a T20I batting average of 40+ and a SR of 140+

Pretty amazing numbers considering the amount of batting talent going around. Will be one of the lynchpins of the South African batting at the World Cup.

I feel this might be his year. He's finally coming into his own as that all-format batting star that South Africa always wanted him to be.

Very talented player. But needs to repay the faith South Africa have put in him with consistency.

Markram is on FIRE this WC, look at those numbers. He really is underrated

Aiden Markram has struck a superb century on a difficult pitch against India in the 2nd test at Cape Town. It took him 99 balls to get to his hundred. 6th quickest in terms of balls taken. Superb batting by him.

Fastest Test hundreds for South Africa (by balls taken):

75 - AB de Villiers vs India, Centurion, 2010
87 - Hashim Amla vs Australia, Perth, 2012
95 - Denis Lindsay vs Australia, Johannesburg, 1966
95 - Jonty Rhodes vs West Indies, Centurion, 1999
95 - Shaun Pollock vs Sri Lanka, Centurion, 2001
99 - Aiden Markram vs India, Cape Town, 2024

Top quality knock albeit in losing cause. Saved SA from an innings defeat.

He has not delivered with the bat, but his captaincy has been brilliant all tournament. Unlike other captains who can be predictable and mechanical, he embraces match-ups and plays the percentages. A very smart and aggressive captain who has rarely missed a beat all tournament. You can see why he was touted as a future leadership figure in South African cricket, long before he had even established himself. He has already led South Africa to U-19 WC glory, would be quite an achievement for him if he manages to lead them to their first major ICC trophy in just his first tournament as captain.

Also, he has apparently never lost a match as captain in an ICC tournament.

He led South Africa to the U-19 WC in 2014, where they were unbeaten. He captained them in 2 games in the 2023 WC, both which they won. And they have been unbeaten in this tournament so far.

If I was running CSA, I would just go ahead and give him all-format captaincy.

Did nothing in the World Cup! Pretty disappointing.

Well played! He was the only hurdle for Pakistan’s bowlers on Day 2 of the First Test between Pakistan and South Africa

What a knock he is playing in the final of the WTC. Great ones of his career.

Century in a final. Dream for many but this guy is about to finish the game for his country and win the final of an ICC event...

Kudos Aiden... What a knock it has been.
