"Handle Your Country": Arvind Kejriwal Snubs Pak Leader's Poll Shoutout

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, out on bail to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, today sharply reacted to a Pakistan leader after he shared his post on social networking platform 'X'.

Arvind Kejriwal voted today in the national capital along with his father, wife and children. He also shared a photograph on X - earlier known as Twitter - after casting vote.

"My father, wife and both my children voted. My mother could not come today as she is very ill. I have voted against inflation, and unemployment," Mr Kejriwal posted.

Pakistan leader Fawad Hussain Chaudhry- quoting Mr Kejriwal's post - said, "May peace and harmony defeat forces of hate and extremism."

Responding to this, the Delhi Chief Minister said that instead of interfering in India's internal matter, Fawad Hussain should rather focus on the poor state of his country.

"We are fully capable of handling our issues. The situation of Pakistan is very poor now, so you should take care of your country," he said.

"Elections are our internal matter. India will not tolerate interference by the biggest sponsors of terrorism," he said in another post.

Taking a dig, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said Arvind Kejriwal has "massive support" from Pakistan.

"I've told you, not only Rahul Gandhi but Arvind Kejriwal has got massive support in Pakistan," Mr Rijiju posted.

Voting is taking place today in eight seats each in Bihar and Bengal, seven in Delhi, 10 in Haryana, four in Jharkhand, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, and the final seat in Jammu & Kashmir -- Anantnag-Rajouri, where poling was moved from the third to the sixth phase.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4 after the last phase of the election ends on June 1.

Prajwal Revanna Arrested

Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who is accused of sexually assaulting multiple women, has been arrested after his flight from Germany's Munich landed at the Bengaluru airport in the early hours of Friday.

The Janata Dal (Secular) leader, who is also the candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, had left for Germany on April 27, a day after polling in his constituency. Videos allegedly showing him sexually assaulting the women had surfaced the same day.

Mr Revanna, who is the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, was aboard Lufthansa flight LH0764, which landed at the Kempegowda International Airport.

The JDS leader was handed over to police officials waiting at the airport and sources said he will be taken to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) office, where he will spend the night in the custody of the Special Investigation Team probing the case.

A medical test will be conducted and he has to be produced before a magistrate within 24 hours.

The anticipatory bail petition filed by Mr Revanna, which will now turn into a regular bail plea, is also scheduled to be heard today. The verdict on the anticipatory bail plea of his mother, Bhavani Revanna, is also expected today.

Hearing that India Alliance will skip the exit polls ?

What does this mean ? I have put all my eggs in the Puppu alliance expecting a sure victory.

Our in-house resident Pillion Bicycle rider has also not been seen over the last few days..

Please please tell me Puppu and the gang are not accepting defeat here.

:inti

From what I read and heard, it appears NDA's win will be bigger than their win in 2019. INDIA alliance is weak. In Tamil Nadu DMK+ which is part of INDIA will get around 25-30 seats out of 39. But in other states, BJP and their partners will have a better show.
A few here laughed at this. :)
We will come to know soon how big the victory for NDA is.

Annamalai may face a setback. My guess is that he will lose by a narrow margin, but the BJP vote share will rise to double digits, which is a phenomenal effort from him.
Yes, Annamalai is likely to lose. Ganapathy Rajkumar is expected to win in Coimbatore. But, he seems more reasonable than the other politicians in the state. With the imminent demise of AIADMK in the years to come, BJP will gain some of those vote share.

I know you are into cryptocurrencies, but I wasn't sure if you also trade in the stock market. :vk

I don’t trade bro, I invest. Trading is a full time job, you need to study the market daily and understand trends and wicks.

For me it’s easier to just invest in stocks for short/long term and make profits that way.

I tried trading before, but I got wiped off. So I stopped doing it, not my cup of tea

Nifty is down over 1000 points but I think this is a good result for the country. I think the market will realize it with time.

In any case only 3% of Indians invest in stock markets. Policies should be made by keeping rest 97% in mind.

I don't ask for anything when praying, but asked for a BJP win instead of a cricket world cup win. I had asked for the same in 2019 and my wish was granted, and one half of my wish has been granted so far for the next term.

@pillionrider God granted my wish the second time too. Sacrificed cricket world cup, to get Modi back as PM.

India opposition accuses Modi of 'stock market scam'

Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded an investigation into a stock market crash that hit investors at the end of the general election.

He accused top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of making misleading predictions about stock prices surging after 4 June, the day the results were announced.

Mr Gandhi, from the Congress party, claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged people to buy stocks before this, which led to them losing money when the market crashed.

Mr Modi's party, the BJP, has denied the allegations.

Mr Gandhi has demanded that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigate the alleged scam and the role of Mr Modi and senior ministers.

He alleged that weeks before election results, Mr Modi, ex-Home Minister Amit Shah, and former Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman advised people to "buy stocks before 4 June", suggesting that the market would surge after, anticipating a BJP victory.

In May, Mr Shah told NDTV news channel in an interview: "Stock market crashes should not be linked with elections, but even if such a rumour has been spread, I suggest that you buy (shares) before 4 June. It will shoot up."

Mr Gandhi has labelled it "the biggest scam" in India's stock market history, alleging that the manipulation benefited certain "dubious foreign investors", causing Indians to lose trillions of rupees.

Mr Modi's departing trade minister, Piyush Goyal, has refuted the allegations, accusing Mr Gandhi of misleading investors.

Exit polls had predicted that the BJP would comfortably win a majority - securing more than 272 seats in the 543 member parliament - while together with its alliance partners, this figure would touch 360-370.

However, the results were drastically different from these predictions, with the BJP failing to reach the halfway mark on its own and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) getting just 293 seats.

Mr Gandhi has now claimed that the exit polls were "fake" and that the BJP knew that it was not going to win more that 220 seats "from its internal survey and the feedback from the intelligence agencies".

"Despite that, the exit polls were made to show that the BJP was winning a large number of seats," Mr Gandhi alleged.

This, he alleged, led to massive buying of stocks on 3 June.

When the results came out the next day, the Indian stock market saw one of its worst crashes in years, with investments worth billions of dollars being wiped out.

The BJP's Mr Goyal said that it was Indians who gained from the rise and fall in stock prices, since in April and May, when the market was on an upswing, foreign investors had sold shares which Indians had bought.

And this happened again on 4 June, when the market crashed, he said.

"So foreigners bought at a high price and sold at a low price. Indian investors sold at a high price and bought at a low price. So in a way, Indian investors earned even in this period. No one suffered a loss," he said.

On Friday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Mr Goyal's explanation was "rubbish" and added that it did not answer specific questions raised by Mr Gandhi.

The BJP has not responded to Mr Ramesh's allegations.

India general elections 2024: Ravindra Waikar’s kin had phone that unlocks EVM

Police are investigating as to how the accused got a hold of a phone that received OTP that unlocked machine

During investigations, the Vanrai police has found that the accused Mangesh Pandilkar, relative of Ravindra Waikar—Shiv Sena candidate who won the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat by 48 votes—was using the phone which was connected to the Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs). Police said this mobile phone was used for generating the OTP that unlocked the EVM machine, which was used inside the NESCO Centre on June 4.

The Vanrai police also sent a CRPC 41A notice to the accused Mangesh Pandilkar and Dinesh Gurav who was the ENCORE (poll portal) operator with the Election Commission (EC). The police have now sent the mobile phone to Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to find the mobile phone data and also are taking fingerprints that are on the phone. According to the police officials, the incident occurred on June 4 at NESCO centre during the counting of votes for the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency.

Speaking with mid-day, senior inspector Rampiyare Rajbhar of Vanrai police station said, “We have sent the mobile phone to forensics that will be looking into the call records. We are also checking if the mobile phone was used for any other reasons. We have recorded the statement of the other candidates and a notice has been sent to the accused Mangesh Pandilkar and Dinesh Gurav. They will have to come to the police station for the investigation. They seem to be cooperating with us for now if this stops, we will issue an arrest warrant.”

Hmmm this makes no sense though.

EVM is designed in a way that they don't have any wireless input signal i.e no bluetooth or wifi. How does a phone unlock an EVM ?

India's Priyanka Gandhi to finally make electoral debut

Priyanka Gandhi, sister of India's main opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, is set to contest her first election, ending decades of anticipation by her supporters.

Ms Gandhi is a descendant of the Nehru-Gandhi family, India's most famous political dynasty, and her electoral debut will be closely watched.

The 52-year-old will contest the Wayanad seat in the southern Indian state of Kerala after her brother relinquishes it.

A win for Ms Gandhi would mean the presence of all three Gandhi family members in the Indian parliament.

Her mother Sonia Gandhi, former president of the Congress party, is an MP in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament.

Her brother Mr Gandhi won the recent parliamentary elections from both Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli seats.

Mr Gandhi, who has represented Wayanad as an MP since 2019, is giving it up as he can only retain one parliamentary seat under Indian law. On Monday, he thanked the people of Wayanad for their "love, affection and support".

A date for the by-election is yet to be announced but Ms Gandhi says she is "not nervous at all".

"I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad and I will not let them feel his [Rahul Gandhi's] absence," she said on Monday. "I will work hard and I will try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative."

The by-election will mark the end of a decades-long wait by Congress supporters for Ms Gandhi's involvement in electoral politics.

Arvind Kejriwal To Leave Jail Today, Probe Agency Challenges His Bail

Aam Aadmi Party leaders will go to greet Arvind Kejriwal as he walks out of Tihar jail today after being granted bail in a corruption case linked to the Delhi liquor policy. A Delhi court granted bail to the Delhi Chief Minister after his lawyer argued that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had presented no evidence against Mr Kejriwal. The probe agency has challenged the bail in Delhi High Court.

But ahead of Mr Kejriwal's release in the evening today, AAP will present a united front as they protest over a water shortage in the national capital. Water Minister Atishi and Mr Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, will visit the Raj Ghat today where the former goes on an indefinite hunger strike.

Delhi has been hit by a heatwave with temperatures soaring over 50 degrees Celsius which has been made worse by a severe water crisis. Delhi government have approached the Supreme Court claiming that neighbouring Haryana is blocking water from coming into the national capital.

Atishi in her appeal said, "Till the time Haryana doesn't release water into the Yamuna, water shortage will continue in Delhi. Munak Canal is receiving very little water and on the other hand, Wazirabad Barrage is receiving no water. The water from Yamuna goes to water treatment and is then resent to Delhi's public after re-treatment. But there is no water in Yamuna, the reason why the supply is halted. I can just stand before the Haryana government with folded hands and appeal to save the lives of Delhi's public.

Around 4 pm today, Atishi and other AAP leaders will go to Tihar jail as Mr Kejriwal walks out of the prison.

The ED arrested Mr Kejriwal on March 21 over money laundering allegations while framing the Delhi liquor policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped after the Lieutenant Governor raised red flags. The ED has alleged the money Mr Kejriwal got from the liquor sellers was used to fund the party's campaign in Goa since he is the convenor of the AAP.

Mr Kejriwal and the AAP have from the start maintained the Centre has been misusing its agencies to harass the Opposition with false cases.

Yesterday, the judge ordered Mr Kejriwal's release on a personal bond of ₹ 1 lakh but imposed certain conditions before granting him the relief, including that he would not try to hamper the investigation or influence the witnesses.

The judge also directed Kejriwal to appear before the court whenever required and to cooperate with the investigation.

Big Setback For Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi High Court Pauses Bail Order

In a setback for Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi High Court paused his bail order in a corruption case related to the Delhi Liquor Policy until a hearing on Enforcement Directorate's petition. The probe agency challenged Mr Kejriwal's bail just hours before he was to leave Tihar jail.

The ED mentioned its petition challenging the trial court's bail order for an urgent hearing before a bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja.

The high court said till it heard the petition, the trial court order would not be acted upon.

Mr Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders had planned to visit Tihar Jail at 4 pm today to greet the Delhi Chief Minister.

Yesterday, a Delhi court ordered Mr Kejriwal's release on a personal bond of ₹ 1 lakh but imposed certain conditions before granting him the relief, including that he would not try to hamper the investigation or influence the witnesses. The court had accepted Mr Kejriwal's argument that the probe agency hasn't presented enough evidence since arresting the Delhi Chief Minister on March 21.

The bail came after multiple rounds in trial courts where Arvind Kejriwal has been repeatedly denied bail. He hasn't stepped down as Delhi Chief Minister despite calls from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for his resignation.

In May, the Supreme Court had issued interim bail to Mr Kejriwal for election campaigning. He returned to prison two days before the results were declared.

The ED arrested Mr Kejriwal over money laundering allegations while framing the Delhi liquor policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped after the Lieutenant Governor raised red flags. Arvind Kejriwal Moves SC Challenging Delhi High Court's Stay On His Bail Order

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s stay on the operation of his bail order granted by the trial court in the money laundering case pertaining to the liquor policy scam.

The matter is likely to be mentioned before a vacation bench of the top court on Monday.

The Delhi High Court on Friday had granted an interim stay on the trial court’s bail order to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case regarding the alleged liquor policy scam.

“I am reserving the order for two to three days. Till the pronouncement of the order, the operation of the trial court order is stayed,” a vacation bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain said.

The Delhi HC had also issued notice to Kejriwal seeking his response to the Enforcement Directorate’s plea challenging the trial court’s June 20 order by which he was granted bail. The court had further said it was reserving the order for 2-3 days to review the entire record.

Delhi's water minister Atishi has been admitted to hospital, five days after she began a hunger strike to highlight the city's water crisis

The Indian capital has been facing severe water shortages as a prolonged heatwave has pushed up consumption.
Ms Atishi was taken to hospital on Tuesday morning after her sugar levels dropped to 36 - way below the normal range of 70-100mg/dL.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who goes by only one name, has accused neighbouring Haryana state of restricting water supply to the city.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in Haryana, has denied the charge and blamed the AAP government for the water crisis.

"She has not eaten anything for the last five days," AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that she was being treated in the ICU.

Ms Atishi has blamed the Haryana government for holding up a large share of water from river Yamuna, which runs through the capital.

But last week, Ms Atishi requested the Haryana government to release additional water to the city on "humanitarian grounds".

The minister also alleged that for the past three weeks, Haryana had reduced water supply to the capital by 100 million gallons per day, depriving 2.8 million people of their needs.

The Haryana government, in turn, accused Delhi of mismanagement and said that authorities were responsible for the city's water crisis.

CBI arrests Arvind Kejriwal at Delhi court complex, says we showed restraint

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal at the Rouse Avenue courts complex in connection with the now-scrapped 2021-22 excise policy after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief was produced before a city court.

The agency has sought his custody for five days, saying they need to confront him with some documents and rejected criticism around the timing of the arrest.

“We could’ve done the exercise before the (Lok Sabha) elections but did not. It was only after he went back (at the end of his interim bail, that we sought permission,” special public prosecutor DP Singh, appearing for CBI, told special judge Amitabh Rawat who had declined to interfere with the CBI questioning and arresting Kejriwal.

To a question by the judge why the agency was arresting Kejriwal at this stage, Singh said CBI received the sanction to prosecute the chief minister under the Prevention of Corruption Act in April but the prosecution did not want to overreach the majesty of the Supreme Court which was considering Kejriwal’s release on interim bail at the time. “We showed restraint…. Every time we have tried to show our restraint. Now it is absolutely mandatory because now we want to conclude (the investigation) by July 3. There is an emergency for it. We will try to file the chargesheet thereafter,” Singh told the court.

During the arguments to seek Kejriwal’s custody, CBI also said the chief minister was “pushing the entire onus on Manish Sisodia and saying that he has no idea about the excise policy”. The statement drew a sharp response from Kejriwal, who later addressed the court, and stressed that the CBI was trying to sensationalise the case.

“I have never given any statement that Manish Sisodia is guilty. I have given a statement that Aam Aadmi Party, Manish Sisodia and I are not guilty,” Kejriwal said in Hindi. “They (CBI) are sensationalising the issue. They want the newspapers to carry a front-page headline that Arvind Kejriwal has shifted the entire blame on Manish Sisodia,” he told the judge.

Senior lawyer Vikram Chaudhari, who appeared for Kejriwal, described his arrest as the “biggest abuse of process of law”.

Chaudhari pointed out that though Kejriwal’s name cropped up in almost every chargesheet, CBI had chosen to maintain an “eerie silence” and insisted that there was no necessity on CBI’s part to arrest the chief minister. That CBI decided to arrest Kejriwal after vacation trial judge Niyay Bindu ordered his release on bail on Thursday makes it clear that the decision was malafide and a sham, he said.

To be sure, the Delhi high court on Tuesday stayed the trial judge’s order granting bail in a money laundering case, calling the decision “perverse” and criticising the trial court for inadequately considering evidence presented by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

DP Singh underlined that CBI moved the application to interrogate the chief minister and issue a production warrant only after the high court stayed the bail order. Singh said that the evidence, role and lies had come in parts and there were two agencies probing the excise policy.

Opposition MPs Vs PM Modi In Fiery Parliament Face-Off

The Lok Sabha witnessed unprecedented scenes - screaming MPs, an apoplectic Speaker, and a Prime Minister shouting at the top of his voice - Tuesday afternoon as the government and the opposition went head-to-head in an ugly battle. PM Modi launched jibe after jibe at the Congress as his critics kept up an incessant din of sloganeering and rhythmic chanting.

Mr Modi - standing up to speak on the Motion of Thanks following President Droupadi Murmu's joint address last week - faced a furious wall of noise from the moment he began, with the opposition heckling and screaming at the Prime Minister on a range of issues - from his silence over the violent ethnic conflict in Manipur (underlined by a forceful midnight speech by Congress MP Bimol Akoijam) to leaked question papers for the NEET-UG medical tests.

At one point in Mr Modi's speech the opposition simply screamed for seconds to drown out his words. The PM, waiting for a break, stood and chuckled.

Such was the opposition's relentless sloganeering that Speaker Om Birla appeared to lose his temper on more than one occasion as he tried, without any success, to control the shrieking opposition.

Speaker's Rebuke For Rahul, Opposition

And as chants of 'Manipur, Manipur' and 'tanashahi nahin chalegi ('won't allow dictatorship')' rang out, a visibly furious Speaker threw down a reprimand to Mr Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition.

As the PM pressed on the opposition dialed up the volume. Mr Birla responded, "Yesterday, I allowed you (Mr Gandhi) to speak for 90 minutes. No one stopped you. This is no way to behave."

"Paanch saal aise nahin chalegi (We cannot have five years of this)," he declared.

But an opposition rejuvenated by the result of the 2024 Lok Sabha election - in which the Congress-led INDIA bloc stymied the BJP's grand 'abki baar, 400 paar' plan - kept up an incessant din.

PM Targets Rahul Gandhi

The Prime Minister's speech today followed a fiery speech by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi Monday, in which he lashed out at Mr Modi, his BJP, and the ruling party's ideological mentor, the RSS.

During Mr Gandhi's speech - parts of which have been expunged from the record - the Prime Minister twice stood up to intervene; the second time he was met by jeers from the opposition.

Mr Modi began his speech with a reference to President Murmu; among the many holes the BJP sought to pick in Mr Gandhi's speech yesterday was that he did not mention the President.

The Prime Minister also got in an early swipe at the Congress MP.

"President mentioned our (the BJP's) vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' in her speech. She gave a direction to the country and I want to express my gratitude. Many expressed this opinion, especially first-time MPs - those who followed the rules and their conduct was (that) of experienced MPs," he declared.

The swipe at Mr Gandhi - who was fiercely criticised by union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ashwini Vaishnaw for "improper conduct" while delivering his speech - was unmistakable.

As the opposition's sloganeering ramped up, the Prime Minister continued.

"I can understand the pain of some people... even after spreading lies they tasted defeat. People of India have given us the opportunity to work for the third time... have given us a mandate," he said.

Mr Modi was referring to the result of the election, in which the BJP, expecting to win over 370 seats on its own, had to be content with just 240 after a sterling fightback from the INDIA opposition bloc.

The BJP and Mr Modi returned for a third term thanks to the 53 seats of its National Democratic Alliance members; the saffron party did not need NDA seats in its first two terms.

The Congress - which got fewer than 50 seats in 2014 and 2019 - won 99, while the party-led INDIA bloc picked up 232, including slashing into the BJP's leads in key states like Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

Continuing to lash out at the opposition - as chanting about Manipur became louder and louder - the Prime Minister also said, "This country has seen politics of appeasement (but) we did politics of satisfaction and not appeasement. 'Justice to all, appeasement to none' is our mantra.

"Conspiracy Against Hindus"

In a shouting match that dragged on past the two-hour mark, the Prime Minister also ripped into Mr Gandhi over his remarks from Monday.

"Their whole ecosystem has made abusing Hindu culture a fashion," Mr Modi declared.

"It is fashion for them. Their allies compare Hinduism to malaria and they clap..."

"Weak" Central Government Might Collapse Next Month, Claims Lalu Yadav

The 'weak' central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi might collapse next month, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav claimed.

"The Central government is very weak and might collapse in August this year. It will allow the INDIA bloc to form a new government," Lalu Prasad said, addressing the RJD leaders and workers on the 28th Foundation Day of RJD at the party's head office in Patna.

RJD was founded on July 5, 1997, under the leadership of Lalu Prasad Yadav. The party had the backing of only 17 Lok Sabha and eight Rajya Sabha MPs at its inception. It had the support of many senior leaders, including Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Mohammad Shahabuddin, Mohammad Taslimuddin, Ali Asraf Fatmi, and Abdul Bari Siddiqui.

The Bihar Assembly election could happen at any time, Lalu Yadav said, asking party workers to stay strong, implying that their strength would contribute to the party's overall strength.

He also commended his son, Tejashwi Yadav, for his hard work during the Lok Sabha elections, which resulted in the party winning four seats.

He also noted that Tejashwi Yadav's efforts in the last Assembly elections helped establish RJD as the single largest party in Bihar.

"He will make all the party's decisions for the upcoming assembly elections," the RJD Chief said.

Tejashwi Yadav criticised both the central and state governments in his address to the workers and emphasised that despite being in power or Opposition, the party and its leadership never compromised.

"RJD turned into the largest party in the Legislative Assembly in 2020. Although, they cheated and deliberately defeated us in that election," Tejashwi Yadav said.

He said that RJD was able to get the caste-based survey done in Bihar only within 17 months, which was aimed at the advancement of the backward and extremely backward communities.

"BJP is against reservation and constitution," he said.

Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tejashwi Yadav said that the BJP's goal of winning over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha fell significantly short.

"Narendra Modi is the weakest Prime Minister. He will not complete his five-year term. If the INDIA bloc had won 10 more seats, Modi might not have become the Prime Minister for the third time," he said

Arvind Kejriwal's Bail Plea To Be Heard On July 29 By Delhi HC, Order On CBI Arrest Reserved

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved verdict on the legality of arrest of jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the CBI. The court has fixed July 29 for hearing arguments on regular bail for the Arvind Kejriwal in the CBI case in the Delhi Liquor Police matter.

The high court also concluded hearing arguments on interim bail and also reserved order on the same. The verdict on legality of Kejriwal's arrest by CBI and his interim bail is likely to come out together within a week.

Ok Ladoo Yadav....

Why Did Kejriwal's Lawyer Bring Up Imran Khan And Pakistan During Bail Hearing

The advocate, who is defending Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged excise policy scam, on Wednesday compared his situation to that of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during a High Court hearing, Times Now reported.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, argued that his client's arrest by the CBI in the alleged excise policy scam was an "insurance arrest." He explained, "It is unfortunately an insurance arrest. I have effectively three release orders in my favour (in the ED case) under very stringent provisions. These orders show that the man is entitled to be released. He would have been released but for this insurance arrest."

Singhvi emphasized that Kejriwal was "not a terrorist" and that the arrest was not in accordance with the law, entitling the Chief Minister to bail. He claimed the CBI arrested Kejriwal fearing he might secure bail in the ED's case.

Kejriwal was granted interim bail, but Sisodia's is still uncertain. Singhvi stated, "Unfortunately for me, I am back to square one because of this insurance arrest. Those who want it, by hook or by crook, have kept him behind bars. Suddenly this man is very important to be interrogated in June and taken into custody."

Drawing a comparison to Imran Khan, Singhvi remarked that the court should prevent such scenarios from unfolding in India. "The trial court has given me regular bail under PMLA four days earlier. If this is so, we are proudly not that country... Three days ago Imran Khan was released, everybody read it in the newspaper, and he gets arrested again in another case. It can't happen in our country."

Singhvi also cited the Supreme Court's order granting bail to Kejriwal earlier, telling the court, "The Supreme Court last week thought it fit to release him indefinitely... I have, effectively, three release orders in my favour. First is the interim bail order by the Supreme Court to campaign during elections. The second is the recent interim bail. In a much more stringent PMLA, he has been released by the trial court, but that order is stayed by this court."

The Delhi High Court has reserved its order and scheduled the regular bail plea hearing for July 29. Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on June 26 from Tihar Jail, where he remains in judicial custody in a connected money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He was initially arrested by the ED on March 21 and granted bail by the trial court in the money laundering case on June 20. However, the trial court's order was stayed by the high court. On July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the money laundering case.

The excise policy in question was scrapped in 2022 after the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption in its formulation and execution. The CBI and the ED claim that irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy, with undue favours extended to license holders.

Backlash against job quotas for locals in India's IT hub

The southern Indian state of Karnataka has paused a bill that mandated quotas for locals in private sector jobs after pushback from tech companies.

The state cabinet had approved the bill on Monday, triggering protests from top industrialists and opposition leaders.

The bill requires firms to reserve 70% of non-management and 50% of management jobs for locals.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the bill would be reviewed in the next cabinet meeting before any decision was made.

The announcement came a day after he posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the bill would reserve "100%" of jobs for Kannadigas (natives who speak Karnataka's local language Kannada).

The post was widely shared on X and sparked criticism from business leaders.

Mr Siddaramaiah deleted his post after the state's Labour Minister Santosh S Lad clarified that jobs could be "outsourced" if skill sets were not available locally.

"But the government is trying to bring in a law to give preference to locally available skills," he said.

In India, for a bill passed by a state to become a law, it has to be approved by the state's assembly and receive the governor's assent.

The new quota bill is is still some way away from these steps - and might even go back to the drawing board - but it has already triggered widespread outrage.

Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) city - which is the state's capital - is home to several top global information-technology (IT) firms like Google and Infosys, as well as start-ups.

It also has many top IT and engineering colleges, making it the preferred destination for people looking to study or work in the tech sector.

Job seekers from all over India migrate to the city for work, making it one of the most cosmopolitan ones in India. But this has drawn outrage from some sections of the local population, who say that migrants are taking away their jobs.

However, industrialists fear that the new bill will dent the secular image of the city and rob it of talent.

India's top technology association, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), expressed its disappointment over the bill.

It said in a statement that the new bill would hamper the growth of the tech industry, force companies to relocate and stifle the growth of start-ups. It also sought an urgent meeting with the state's authorities to discuss its concerns.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who heads one of India's top pharmaceutical companies - Biocon - which has its office in Bengaluru, also criticised the bill.

"As a tech hub we need skilled talent and whilst the aim is to provide jobs for locals, we must not affect our leading position in technology by this move," she posted on X and called for "caveats that exempt highly skilled recruitment from this policy".

This isn't the first time that laws seeking to benefit locals while targeting outsiders have faced criticism in the state.

After years of protests calling for preference to be given to Kannada language in business establishments, the government in February passed a law mandating that 60% of text on all signboards in the state should be in the local language.

But after criticism from various sections, including businesses in Bengaluru where many people are fluent in English and don't speak the local language, the Karnataka High Court ordered the government not to take coercive action against establishments that didn't implement the rule.

Jharkhand CM Behind 'Land Jihad', 'Love Jihad': Amit Shah In Ranchi Promises 'White Paper' On State Demography

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led government, accusing it of corruption and being behind demographic changes in the state. Speaking at the BJP's extended working committee meeting in Ranchi, Shah alleged that Chief Minister Hemant Soren was involved in "land jihad" and "love jihad."

"Infiltrators are marrying tribal women, obtaining certificates, and buying land, causing the tribal population to shrink in Jharkhand," Shah stated. He further promised that, if the BJP forms the government in Jharkhand, they would release a 'White Paper' on the state's demography to protect tribal people and their lands.

Shah also criticised the JMM-led government, labelling it as the most corrupt in the country. "The JMM government is involved in land, liquor, and mining scams worth crores of rupees," he asserted.

Predicting a BJP victory in the upcoming 2024 assembly elections, Shah declared, "I can read the writing on the wall that the BJP is going to form the government in Jharkhand after the 2024 assembly elections with full majority."

He also criticised the INDIA bloc and Congress leaders, particularly Rahul Gandhi, for their "arrogance" despite losing the Lok Sabha polls. "They are unable to accept defeat and are showing arrogance for indulging in scams worth Rs 12 lakh crore, appeasement, dynastic politics, and playing with national security," Shah alleged.

The senior BJP leader also took a dig at the Congress party and its leader Rahul Gandhi, saying, "We have seen that in a democracy, arrogance creeps in after victory. However, I am witnessing it for the first time that there is arrogance after defeat. Who won the election? But Congress is showing arrogance, you must have seen Rahul Gandhi's activities in Parliament."

Shah highlighted the BJP's performance in the Lok Sabha elections, claiming, "BJP got more seats in this Lok Sabha election than Congress's combined numbers in 2014, 2019, and 2024."

He accused the JMM and Congress of corruption, citing recent incidents where large sums of money were found at the homes of Congress leaders and associates. "I am here to inform Jharkhand that the JMM is the most corrupt government. ₹300 crores were found at a Congress MP's home and ₹30 crores at a minister's PA's home. Congress must answer whose money this is," he said.

Shah also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts in combating Naxalism in Jharkhand and Bihar. "Jharkhand has always been affected by Naxalism, but Modi ji has eradicated it from Bihar and Jharkhand," he said.

Shah emphasised the BJP's commitment to Jharkhand's development, comparing the financial support provided by different governments. "In ten years, Congress provided ₹84,000 crores for Jharkhand's development, while Narendra Modi ji has given ₹3,84,000 crores," he said. Shah assured BJP workers, "Whether it is Modi's government, Raghubar Das's government, or Arjun Munda's government, the BJP has governed in a way that allows you to hold your heads high among the people."

Union Minister Annapurna Devi, Laxmikant Bajpai, and Arjun Munda were also present at the meeting.

Amit Shah criticizes Rahul Gandhi for arrogance

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday criticized Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for displaying arrogance in the Parliament despite losing the elections.

Speaking at the Jharkhand BJP working committee meeting in Ranchi, Shah accused the JMM-Congress alliance of indulging in corruption and working against the interests of the tribals, adding that BJP workers to go to the voters highlighting the failures of the Hemant Soren government.

"Many a time we see that in democracy, arrogance comes after winning, such people are there in power in Jharkhand. But arrogance even after being defeated, I have seen it for the first time. Who won the elections, everyone knows about it, but the arrogance that Congress has, we all have seen it--the acts of Rahul Gandhi in the parliament, people don't get this much arrogance even after winning two-thirds of seats," Amit Shah said as he attacked the Congress MP for his conduct in the Parliament.

He also pointed out that in the last 10 years, Congress gave Rs 84 thousand crore for the development of Jharkhand, whereas PM Narendra Modi gave Rs 3 lakh 84 thousand crore for the state.

"Jharkhand was created by the BJP and its development was also done by the BJP. The state was always suffering from Naxalism, but Modi ji has eliminated Naxalism from Bihar and Jharkhand," he said.

"The Indi Alliance people say that they have brought development. Hemant Soren ji, Congress ruled at the centre for 10 years and the BJP for 10 years, you bring the account, I have brought the account of BJP," Shah added.

The Home Minister further asserted that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is the most corrupt government.

"A tribal CM, instead of worrying about the tribals, is disturbing the balance of land and population by doing 'land jihad' and 'love jihad'. Thousands of infiltrators marry tribal girls, get certificates, and buy land. The tribal population is going to decrease in the coming days, it has decreased even now. You form the government of BJP and we will secure the land, demography and reservation of our tribals by bringing a white paper," Amit Shah said.

"Rs 300 crores are found in the house of a Congress MP. Rs 30 crores are found at the house of a minister's PA. The Congress party should answer: whose money is this? Congress runs with such corrupt people and JMM is also with them," he added.

Boosting the morale of the party workers ahead of the state assembly polls, Amit Shah said that whether it is the Modi government, Raghubar Das government, or Arjun Munda government, the BJP government has not done anything, due to which BJP workers have to bow their heads.

"The BJP government has governed in such a manner that you (BJP workers) can go among the people with your head held high with pride. Workers from every booth of Jharkhand have come to this conference. I heartily congratulate all of you, it is because of your strength that the BJP has won 9 seats in Jharkhand," he added.

"In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, not just in Jharkhand, people from all over the country supported the BJP overwhelmingly. After 60 years, in the democratic history of this country, a single leader has been elected as the Prime Minister for the third consecutive time. In 2014, 2019 and 2024, the people of the country have given Modi ji the privilege of becoming the Prime Minister three times in a row," the Home Minister added.

No relief for Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi court extends custody till August 8 in CBI case

A Delhi court on Thursday extended chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody until August 8 in the excise policy case. The AAP supremo appeared via video conference from Tihar Jail.

Rouse Avenue court's special judge Kaveri Baweja ordered the extension of Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody in excise policy case, probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), until August 8.

The court also extended the judicial custody of former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha, and other accused in a separate money laundering case linked to the same excise policy. The court also directed Tihar Jail authorities to produce Delhi CM via video conference on July 31.

Although the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the ED case, he remains in Tihar Jail due to his arrest by the CBI in connection with alleged irregularities in the excise policy's formation and implementation.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Narendra Modi-led central government of trying to harm Delhi chief minister’s health in jail. The party claimed Kejriwal has lost weight and experienced dangerously low blood sugar levels, suggesting he could face severe health issues, including coma or brain damage.

In response, the BJP alleged that Kejriwal is intentionally following a low-calorie diet for sympathy. BJP leader Shazia Ilmi claimed Kejriwal is using his diet to gain public support.

Delhi lieutenant governor VK Saxena has alleged that Kejriwal may be deliberately avoiding his prescribed medical diet and medications. A letter from the Lt governor to chief secretary Naresh Kumar, citing a prison report, alleged that Kejriwal has been intentionally consuming low-calorie food despite having access to sufficient home-cooked meals.

Supreme Court Setback For AAP In Tussle With Lt Governor To Control Delhi

In a big setback for the Aam Aadmi Party government, the Supreme Court today ruled that the Lieutenant Governor can nominate aldermen in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) without Delhi government's aid and advice.

The Lieutenant Governor's power to nominate members to the civic body is a statutory power and not an executive power, the bench said. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala reserved its verdict in the matter last year. The Supreme Court's website earlier said Justice Narasimha will be pronouncing the verdict.

Justice Narasimha said Section 3(3)(b) of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act lays down that the Lieutenant Governor can nominate 10 persons not less than 25 years of age and with special knowledge or experience in municipal administration.

"It is incorrect to suggest that power in Delhi LG was a semantic lottery. It is the law made by the parliament, it satisfies the discretion exercised by LG since law requires him to do so and falls under exception of Article 239. It was 1993 DMC Act which first vested the power to nominate on LG and it is not a relic of the past," he said.

The judge also said that a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court has earlier ruled that Parliament can legislate on state and concurrent lists of Delhi. "As Parliament has conferred power on LG to nominate 10 aldermen, AAP government cannot quarrel with that," he said.

What's Happening In Parliament 1st In Independent India: Priyanka Gandhi

What is happening in Parliament now has never happened in the history of independent India, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Friday, pointing out how Ram Manohar Lohia's sharp remarks and Jawaharlal Nehru's patience in listening to them are still cited as examples.

Ms Gandhi's remarks came after the turbulent relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and INDIA bloc parties came to a head on Friday, with the Congress accusing the chair of acting in a "partisan" manner against the entire opposition.

"Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge ji is a strong voice of democracy. He has 50 years of experience in parliamentary politics. Insulting him inside Parliament, not allowing him to speak, switching off microphones and insulting senior women members by those in power are completely unacceptable," Priyanka Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X.

"Our Parliament has been a witness to the fact that no matter how many opposition members there were, their voices were heard. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia's sharp remarks and Pandit Nehru's patience in listening to those are still cited as examples," she said.

What is happening in Parliament today has never happened in the history of independent India nor will the people of the country accept it, Ms Gandhi said.

Soon after opposition members walked out of the Rajya Sabha protesting against what they described as an "unacceptable" tone and disrespect shown by Dhankhar, the Congress held a press conference to claim that the chair is not giving the opposition the importance it deserves in the Upper House of Parliament.

"Opposition parties feel that the chairman's approach is partisan. The Rajya Sabha is a House that sets parameters for other legislatures. In that House, the chairman should not be seen as partisan. The Congress alone does not feel this way, all opposition parties feel that his behaviour is partial towards one side," Congress leader Ajay Maken told the press conference.

The opposition is not getting the importance it deserves in the Upper House, he said.

"If the opposition's voice does not resonate in the Rajya Sabha, where else will it resonate?" he asked.

Congress's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari alleged that Kharge is not allowed to speak in the House, is frequently interrupted and his microphones are often turned off. PTI ASK RC

SC Reserves Order On Arvind Kejriwal's Bail Plea In Delhi Excise Policy Case

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s pleas seeking bail and challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with his alleged involvement in the excise policy scam.

The case was heard by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented Kejriwal, while Additional Solicitor General SV Raju represented the CBI.

During the proceedings, Singhvi noted that this is the “only case” in which bail has been granted twice to Kejriwal under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) provisions, in addition to regular bail.

The senior counsel further emphasised that Kejriwal poses no threat in the PMLA case.

“He is not a threat in the PMLA case. Currently, there is only the triple test remaining; the next step is to obtain regular bail from the trial court under Section 45 of the PMLA. This order was stayed by the High Court through an oral mention. Effectively, there are three orders in play,” Singhvi said.

Singhvi also noted that the central agency made an ‘insurance arrest’ after Kejriwal was granted bail in the ED case. Arguing for bail for the jailed Delhi CM, he stated that Kejriwal is a constitutional functionary and is not a “flight risk”.

Singhvi also argued that all the co-accused in the Delhi excise case have been released. “The trial court noted that the timing of the arrest is unusual. The triple test has been fully met. It is ironic that nearly all co-accused have been released, with perhaps only one exception,” he said.

The Supreme Court have so far granted bail to senior AAP leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K. Kavitha, and AAP’s former communication-in-charge Vijay Nair in the now-scrapped excise policy case.

Kejriwal filed two separate petitions, challenging the denial of bail and his arrest by the CBI on June 26 in the case. He also contested the August 5 order of the Delhi High Court, which upheld his arrest.

The top court had, on August 23, permitted the CBI to file its counter affidavit and granted Kejriwal two days to submit a rejoinder.

On June 20, a trial court granted bail to Kejriwal after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in the money laundering case. However, this bail order was subsequently stayed by the Delhi High Court.

Additionally, the Supreme Court, on July 12, had ordered, that Kejriwal be released on interim bail in connection with the case filed by the ED. However, he remained in custody due to his arrest by the CBI.

On August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld the arrest of the Chief Minister as legal, stating that there was no malice in the CBI’s actions. The court noted that the CBI had demonstrated how the AAP supremo could potentially influence witnesses, who only found the courage to testify after his arrest.

The high court had directed him to apply for regular bail in the CBI case before the trial court.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a court took cognisance of the charge sheet filed by the CBI against Kejriwal and other accused in the liquor policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja issued a production warrant for Kejriwal on September 11 and extended his custody until the same date.

Modi rival bailed after five months in jail

India's top court has granted bail to prominent opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal more than five months after he was arrested in a corruption case.

A former anti-corruption crusader, he was jailed in connection with a now-scrapped alcohol sales policy.

Mr Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) introduced the policy in November 2021, saying it would curb black market sales, increase revenues and ensure even distribution of liquor licences.

It was withdrawn a few months later after Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena accused AAP of exploiting rules to benefit private liquor barons. Mr Kejriwal and AAP deny the charges.

They said the allegations were "politically motivated".

On Friday, a Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan granted Mr Kejriwal bail and directed him to refrain from making any public comments.

The judges said they had decided to grant him bail since charges had been framed and the trial was unlikely to be completed sometime soon, legal website Live Law reported.

Mr Kejriwal was released on interim bail for three weeks in May to campaign for the parliamentary elections on the condition that he would abstain from his official duties as chief minister.

Mr Kejriwal was the third AAP leader arrested in the case. His former deputy, Manish Sisodia, was granted bail in August after 17 months in jail. Another AAP leader, Sanjay Singh, was released on bail in April.

Critics of India’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have often alleged that it has used investigating agencies to unjustly target opposition leaders, a charge it denies.

Mr Kejriwal’s arrest in March just weeks before key parliamentary elections had drawn comments from the US and Germany.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller had said Washington was closely monitoring his arrest and actions taken against opposition parties in India – drawing "strong objection" from Delhi.

A mechanical engineer, Mr Kejriwal was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay prize – often called Asia’s Nobel – in 2006 for popularising the Right to Information law that allows citizens to access information from the government.

But he gained national prominence following massive anti-corruption protests in 2011 against the then governing Congress party.

Inspired by the campaign's success, he founded the AAP, pledging to eradicate corruption and to take on the Congress and the BJP.

AAP made its poll debut in 2013 Delhi Assembly elections and has governed the capital city since, focussing on welfare measures such as affordable electricity and water for residents.

His party has since contested multiple parliamentary and assembly elections across the country with limited success. Besides Delhi, the party is in power in Punjab.

It is also now a part of INDIA, a loose bloc of opposition parties led by the Congress.
