Released Indian opposition leader Kejriwal to resign as Delhi chief minister

Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday he will resign as chief minister of the Delhi regional government, a day after he was released from prison on bail in a graft case.

Kejriwal was granted bail on Friday by India's Supreme Court and left prison on Saturday almost six months after being detained in relation to alleged irregularities in the capital city's liquor policy.

Kejriwal is a fierce critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a former anti-corruption crusader whose decade-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) quickly rose to mainstream politics, although its clout is relatively small compared to older opposition parties.

AAP had expected that Kejriwal's release from prison would allow him to campaign as a chief minister in regional elections next month in the northern state of Haryana, and in Delhi early next year.

Kejriwal, announcing his resignation as chief minister at a meeting with AAP workers, said he would only return to the post if people certify his honesty by voting for him in the upcoming Delhi election. He called on the Election Commission to bring forward the Delhi election to November, from February 2025.

"I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections, I demand the elections be held immediately," Kejriwal said.

He was first taken into custody in March by India's financial crime-fighting agency, weeks before the country's national elections, in relation to Delhi's liquor policy.

Although he was granted bail in that case in July, he remained in detention due to his arrest the previous month by the federal police in another graft case related to the same policy.

Kejriwal, 55, and AAP deny the allegations and say the cases are "politically motivated".

Breaking - Kejriwal to resign from CM post

Another drama by this chor. He knows his term anyway is getting over in 5 months...so wants to resign now, gain public sympathy and win the next election again.

He said, 'Jab tak delh ki janta mujhe honest nehi maanta...I wont be CM'. Waah...kya drama kar raha hai. Looks like watched too many saas bahu serials in jail :misbah

Anyway, I hope high court bar him from contesting next election.
Taking his playbook from the nehru Ghandy family.. typical of them. Resign just a few months before term and claim sympathy as you said.. why didn't he resign a year or more ago?? Nope.. elections are close thats why..

No no no.

This is the wrong attitude, we need our Puppu to be the future PM of India for the next 100 years.

This will ensure Scamgress won't come to power in our lifetime.

Haha the biggest weapon BJP has is not their IT cell, not their andhbhakts, not their Godi Media not Adani/Ambani but Rahul Gandhi.

Dude has single handedly destroyed an entire party.

AAP's Atishi To Be Delhi's New Chief Minister, Chosen By Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi minister Atishi will take over as Chief Minister after Arvind Kejriwal resigns from the top post after a meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena this afternoon. The decision was taken at an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators' meeting today.

At the meeting of AAP MLAs today, party leader Dilip Pandey proposed that Mr Kejriwal decide on the Chief Minister face. When the AAP national convener proposed Ms Atishi's name, all AAP MLAs stood up and accepted it and Ms Atishi was elected leader of the legislature party.

Ms Atishi now holds key portfolios in the Delhi government such as Education and Public Works Department. An Oxford University alumnus and a Rhodes scholar, Ms Atishi has worked extensively in the AAP's flagship exercise to overhaul education in Delhi's schools.

An MLA from Kalkaji, the 43-year-old became a minister after Mr Sisodia was arrested in a corruption case linked to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. When Mr Kejriwal and Mr Sisodia were behind bars, Atishi articulated the party's position at party events and media exchanges.

On August 15, Mr Kejriwal chose her to hoist the tricolour at Delhi government's Independence Day event. While Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena foiled the plan, it was clear that the AAP leadership placed immense faith in Ms Atishi.

Speaking to the media after the announcement, Ms Atishi thanked her mentor Mr Kejriwal. "Arvind Kejriwal has trusted me and given me this responsibility. I appeal to all people of Delhi to make your son, your brother Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister again because he is honest."

The elevation of Ms Atishi comes two days after Mr Kejriwal's shocking announcement to step down from the top post. Addressing a gathering of party workers on Sunday, the Delhi Chief Minister said, "Two days later, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the Chief Minister's chair only after the order of the people."

Mr Kejriwal's Sunday shocker came two days after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a corruption case linked to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. The bail order paved the way for his release from prison, six months after his arrest.

Post a commentAssembly polls in the national capital are scheduled for February, but Mr Kejriwal has demanded that they be held in November along with the Maharashtra election. The AAP leader and his former Deputy Manish Sisodia have said they would go to the people to seek their support and not return to the top jobs before the people's verdict.

What a fool by gawd

This clown should at least do basic preparation before sitting in a stage in foreign country. Being Indira's grandson may give him a podium but every time he opens his mouth he will get exposed.

Absolute clown...no wonder Pakistanis and Indian anti-nationals :inti want to see him as PM

'First Your Vote, Then Land': Arvind Kejriwal Claims BJP Will Demolish Delhi Slums If It Wins Polls

Delhi’s former Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor on Sunday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will demolish all slums in Delhi if it is voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference in the Shakur Basti area of the national capital, Kejriwal accused the BJP of prioritising land acquisition over the welfare of slum dwellers.

“They want your votes first and your land after the elections," Kejriwal said, referring to the BJP.

He also criticised the BJP’s ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan’ scheme, terming it an eyewash.

“In the past five years, they have constructed only 4,700 flats for slum dwellers," he added.

Kejriwal also alleged that the BJP has plans to take over the land currently occupied by slum dwellers without addressing their housing needs.

“They will demolish all the slums and acquire the land without any concern for the people living there," he said.

“The BJP’s love for the residents of jhuggis (slums) grows only during elections. They don’t care about the people living in jhuggis. Before elections, they want votes from them, and after elections, they want their land," Kejriwal said.

“Amit Shah ji lied to the residents of Delhi’s jhuggis when he claimed, ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan‘. But the BJP didn’t clarify whose house they were talking about. According to them, it’s ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Unke Dost Ka Makaan’."

Kejriwal was accompanied by senior AAP leader Satyendar Jain, the party’s candidate from Shakur Basti constituency. Jain is seeking re-election from the seat for the fourth time after winning it in 2013, 2015 and 2020.

Delhi goes to polls on February 5 and the results will be announced on February 8.

The AAP, which won 62 of the 70 seats in Delhi in the 2020 elections, is eyeing a third consecutive full term.

Arvind Kejriwal's Car Attacked In New Delhi, Claims AAP; BJP Hits Back

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday accused the BJP supporters of pelting stones at the convoy of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during his campaign in the New Delhi constituency.

AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal is contesting against BJP’s former MP Parvesh Verma from the New Delhi constituency in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, scheduled to take place on February 5. The election results will be announced on February 8.

Surprised no one posted this news. No income tax for people earning uptil 12 lakh/pa salary. Modi hai to mumkin hai...look at that respect he is getting parliament. What a leader.

I welcome the move although it’s true that the government was facing a genuine threat of getting alienated with the middle class with its heavy and insensitive taxation policies during the last few years. I have followed politics in our country for years and i have never seen a finance minister getting this much hate as Nirmala Sitharaman was receiving for last many years. This is not a gift but BJP finally acknowledging that they cannot just mindlessly ignore the middle class forever in the name of Hindutva. The economy has suffered, people aren’t buying things, the aspiration to buy a home has been killed for millions.

Practically speaking, this will just bring people transition to the new tax regime. The benefits are exaggerated as the comparison is only being shown against previous tax structure in the new regime only.

There are more important things to do for the Supreme Court and State Police in India but the amount of time spent outraging on this supposed 'controversy' shows the pathetic state of the justice system in India.

The logo for the Tamil Nadu budget, carried ‘ru’, the first letter of Tamil word 'Rubaai', which denotes Indian currency in the vernacular language.

The tussle over the three-language formula under the NEP with the Centre intensified as the Tamil Nadu government, led by chie minister MK Stalin, on Thursday replaced the Devanagari rupee symbol with a Tamil letter in its logo for the budget 2025-26. The move comes amidst a political firestorm over the issue after the Tamil Nadu government rejected the National Education Policy with MK Stalin accusing the Centre of trying to impose Hindi in the southern state under it and claimed that the NEP was a "saffron policy" aimed at promoting and developing Hindi and not the nation.

The DMK has asserted that Tamil Nadu would not tolerate 'Hindi colonialism' replacing British colonialism, while the Union government has accused the state government of being “dishonest” and “ruining the future of the students” in the state for politics.

Several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, reacted strongly to the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government move. The ruling DMK stoutly defended the decision, saying there was nothing wrong in using the native language. No rule barred the dispensation from such a move, the party argued.

Here are 10 updates on the Tamil Nadu rupee symbol row:

  1. The logo for the Tamil Nadu budget, released by the government on Thursday, carried ‘ru’, the first letter of the Tamil word 'Rubaai', which denotes the Indian currency in the vernacular language. Tamil Nadu finance minister Thangam Thennarasu is scheduled to table the budget on Friday. The logo also had the caption "everything for all", indicating the ruling DMK's assurance of an inclusive governance model.
  2. Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the DMK and said the avoidable example of regional chauvinism "promotes secessionist sentiments". Sitharaman took strong exception to the removal of the Rupee logo and asked why the DMK didn't protest in 2010 when it was officially adopted under the then Congress-led UPA government, where the Dravidian party was a key part of the ruling alliance.
  3. "Ironically, ‘ ₹’ was designed by Th. D Udaya Kumar, the son of former DMK MLA N Dharmalingam. By erasing it now, the DMK is not only rejecting a national symbol but also utterly disregarding the creative contribution of a Tamil youth," she said in a post on ‘X.’
  4. Union minister Kiren Rijiju said the DMK is playing a subversive game and the Congress is doing more damage by supporting the DMK. “The Rupee ₹ symbol was designed by Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, a Tamilian and the son of a former DMK MLA, when UPA was in power at Centre and DMK was in Govt in TN. My mother tongue is not Hindi but I respect Hindi and all Indian languages. There's no language imposition on anyone. PM Modi ji has promoted Tamil culture and Tamil language along with other Indian culture & languages what no one has ever done. There should be limit to play politics. Don't harm our nation by dividing people and states of India. We all belong to one nation," Kiren Rijiju posted on X.
  5. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya termed the move an embarrassment for MK Stalin. “More embarrassment for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The ₹ symbol was designed by Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, a Tamilian and the son of a former DMK MLA. The irony doesn’t stop there—the symbol was adopted in 2010 when the Congress was in power at the Centre and the DMK governed the state. None other than P. Chidambaram, another Tamilian and a DMK ally, felicitated Dr. Udaya Kumar for the design,” Amit Malviya posted on X while sharing a video.
  6. BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai strongly condemned the act of the Tamil Nadu government of replacing the Rupee symbol with the Tamil 'Ru' symbol and stated that DMK had become a laughing stock across the country and were doing this just to divert attention from other public issues. He further stated that the symbol which was designed by a Tamil, Udaya Kumar, was appreciated by CM MK Stalin's father, Kalaignar Karunanidhi.
  7. The DMK has argued that the Centre wants to 'impose' the north Indian language on Tamil Nadu through the implementation of the 3-language formula in the NEP and asserted that its government in the state will not follow the 3-language formula but only stick to its decades-old 2-language policy of Tamil and English.
  8. The three-language formula in NEP 2020 recommends that students learn three languages, at least two of which must be native to India. It has not specifically mentioned Hindi. This formula applies to both government and private schools, giving states the flexibility to choose languages without any imposition.
  9. According to a government portal, the rupee symbol is an amalgam of Devanagari "Ra" and the Roman Capital "R" with two parallel horizontal stripes running at the top representing the national flag and also the "equal to" sign. "The Indian Rupee sign was adopted by the Government of India on 15th July, 2010," it said.
  10. Meanwhile, IIT Guwahati Professor D Udaya Kumar, who had designed the Indian rupee symbol, on Thursday refused to be drawn into the controversy over language and said it is a mere coincidence that his father was a DMK MLA.

People are supporting this move, okay.

Other two points you raise are irrelevant and a failed attempt at spicing up this boring thread. I'll pass.
What do you mean by spicing up this thread? So we can't even post news and discuss it just because members like you are too sensitive to discuss. You can run now. :inti

Modi behaves like this too, they just edit it out of the footage. ;)

Ramzaan mein ram, diwali mein ali - Rekha Gupta

It seems Rekha Gupta is now appeasing Muslims, the very thing BJP and andhbhakhts used to accuse AAP and Congress of. The voters who supported her for this are already feeling betrayed and are criticizing her. I wonder if, in an attempt to fix this, she will end up doing something unexpected. :inti @MP2011 @pillionrider @Rajdeep

The legislation aims to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf properties. The amendments, the Centre has said, are aimed at improving the management of Waqf properties in India.

New Delhi:
Lok Sabha is set to witness a marathon debate today as Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill, which has sparked heated political exchanges over the past few weeks

Here's your 10-point cheat sheet to this big story

  1. The legislation aims to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf properties. The amendments, the Centre has said, are aimed at improving the management of Waqf properties in India.

  2. Congress and other Opposition parties have opposed the legislation. They have said that the Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to examine the Bill did not consider Opposition MPs' suggestions. They have alleged that the government is rushing ahead with the Bill.
  • All major parties, including the BJP and the Congress, have issued a whip, asking their MPs to be present in the House when the Bill is introduced and participate in the discussions.

  • Eight hours have been allocated for the debate on the Waqf legislation in Lok Sabha. This time, however, can also be extended. If passed by the Lok Sabha, the Bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
  • The numbers appear to give an advantage to the ruling BJP. The party has 240 MPs, and its key allies TDP and JDU have 16 and 12 MPs, respectively. With other allies, the NDA is expected to score 295 votes, comfortably past the majority mark of 272. The Congress and its allies have around 234 votes.

  • TDP and JDU, the BJP's key allies, have considerable support among the minorities. Opposition MPs have warned the NDA allies of consequences if they support the Bill, which has drawn criticism from key minority bodies.

I support Waqf amendment bill. The changes recommended are necessary :-

  • Only Muslims practicing Islam for at least 5 years can declare waqf, ensuring clarity in creation.
  • Removing "waqf by user," which previously allowed properties to be claimed based on long-term religious use, to reduce disputes.
  • Involving District Collectors in surveys instead of Survey Commissioners, aiming for better oversight.
  • Allowing government properties identified as waqf to be removed from that status, clarifying ownership.
  • Changing Waqf Boards and Councils to include non-Muslims and women, promoting diversity and transparency.
  • Allowing appeals against Tribunal decisions to High Courts, potentially speeding up justice.

So another announcement of feku about 100 smart cities proved to be yet another jumla with no accountability of him for wasted resources and government funds.

Nepo kid, Goyal blasts Indian start ups for providing only gig employment and not starting any deep tech or space tech startups.

Had his master, feku been more keen on governance rather than stoking communal hatred and he himself paid half as much attention on ministry he heads rather than eulogising the feku all the time, Indian start up scene would have been way different than what it is today.
