Pseudo Seculars, especially this one >> :inti: will they condemn the violence ?

Nahh

PM Modi will destroy Bengal, wait till the Federal budget is announced, Bengal will be looking at pennies, they will get nothing, this is not good.

I know you are not an Indian now as you don’t know or care about what happens in this country anymore (except for Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and of course Malappuram). But still.....how can you be this ignorant being a Malayali??

Errrr

re read my post again

3 to 77, numbers speak for itself, BJP has broken into Bengal,no 2 ways about it.

I honestly hope entire Kerala turns into Malappuram, It would be great to see the Pseudo Sicular hindus living under the Malappuram muslims, nothing would make me more happy.

Love to see when all malayalee Sarithas will turn into Sainabhas..

Why did Mamata lose her seat? TMC won the seat easily in 2016 and 2011, so it seems kind of surprising that the leader will lose her seat from there, especially when they won the election.

Why is there violence whenever BJP loses a state? Same happened in Delhi last year.. back then too BJP workers were being targeted apparently and then there was a reaction.

Very interesting that opposition parties don’t do violence when they lose. But they do when they win

Very curious... almost as interesting as how India randomly always gets into a skirmish with Pakistan whenever Modi is in a tough election.

Not too difficult to know if you look at their track record. And if you see all these obscure tweets, 9/10 are from their sympathizers or their own netas.

Bjp supporters in Kerala are blaming other parties for playing communal politics :)))

As has been pointed out by cricketcartoons even before the results were declared, this is what happens in Bengal, regardless of party. Mamata herself has been hospitalized several times in the past.

What would have been the fate of Muslims and TMC if the BJP had actually won as per their pre-results bluster and fake exit polls?

I'm a little surprised the posters expressing their outrage aren't applying their standard responses here:
Fake news
Law will take its course.

It's also been claimed that there have been some cases of violence among BJP factions in the state.

But here's the more worrying bigger picture.

What happened to the lion hearts of the BJP that's often on display in states where they're in power. Why are they not fighting back. They have Central power. Plenty of voices coming from Bengal about the Central BJP abandoning them. If so:
1. Is this Amit Shah's punishment for the embarrassing loss.
2. Are they stoking it and sacrificing their own, just to cause communal tensions to be harnessed in the future.
3. Are they just cowards when not in numbers.
4. Are many videos of post-violence scenes merely the BJP guys doing it themselves for sympathy?

The most prominent amongst them is Swapan Dasgupta who owes his political career to current regime.

Why won't he cry hoarse especially after he himself lost his assembly seat and that too after surrendering his RS seat! Lol, talk about shooting your own foot!

True. Whatever happening there is unfortunate and condemnable but the Sanghis should be the last person to accuse others of hypocrisy. They will open their mouth only when their lot is on the receiving side.

Post-poll violence in West Bengal: Centre rushes 4-member fact-finding team to Kolkata

It has been given 48 hours to file report while CM says “inefficiencies” crept into the administration during elections when the Election Commission held control and insisted violence reported from areas where the BJP had won

The Centre on Thursday deputed a team of top bureaucrats to West Bengal for a fact-finding exercise on the ongoing violence in the state after TMC’s thumping victory in the recent assembly polls. The four member team, constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), is headed by an additional secretary rank official.

“The team left this morning and is likely to begin its work in Kolkata shortly. It has been given 48 hours to come back with a report,” an MHA official said.

Sources said the team will meet top officials of the West Bengal police apart from the chief secretary and other bureaucrats in the administration. It will also make field visits to some of the places where violence has been reported since Sunday and talk to affected families, sources said.

In the wake of continued violence in West Bengal following poll results, the MHA had on Wednesday written to the State government accusing it of not taking steps to stem the violence and asked why a report sought by it had not been received yet.

MHA sources said the letter had been sent to West Bengal chief secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay reminding him of the May 3 letter by the MHA in which he had been asked to take immediate measures to check post poll violence in the state. The letter had also asked for detailed report on the situation.

“So far the report has not been received. According to media reports, violence continues. This means effective measures have not been taken so far,” an MHA official said quoting from the letter.

He added that West Bengal has been asked to take all necessary measures to stop the violence.

“The letter has also said that if the situation report is not received at once, it will be viewed seriously,” the official said.

Following TMC’s thumping victory in Assembly polls on Sunday, there have been reports of widespread violence in the state with many BJP offices and workers being allegedly targeted by TMC workers. There have also been reports of TMC leader’s being targeted by the BJP. More than 14 deaths have been reported till date.

Taking cognisance of the situation, Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday transferred 30 top officers, including DGP P Nirajnayan, in her first action after being sworn in again as Chief Minister, warning that violence of any kind will not be tolerated.

Following a meeting with top officials, Banerjee said “inefficiencies” had crept into the administration during the long poll process when the Election Commission held control, and said violence was being reported from areas where the BJP had won in the Assembly elections.

The administrative shake-up Wednesday included transfer of 29 IPS officers and one IAS, including DGP Nirajnayan (moved as DG, Fire Services) and ADG (Law and Order) Jagmohan (now DG, Civil Defence). Banerjee brought back Virendra as DGP and Javed Shamim as ADG (Law and Order) — the two had been transferred by the EC during the election period.

In an appeal, Banerjee asked all political parties to maintain peace and harmony. “Bengal doesn’t tolerate unrest, nor do I. Starting today I will tackle the law and order,” she said.

Am alive, 1,300 km away, says journalist BJP video claimed was killed in Bengal violence

The video, however, left a journalist shocked as he found that it was his image that was passed off as that of ‘Manik Moitro of Sitalkuchi’.

Reacting to the post, India Today journalist Abhro Banerjee took to Twitter Thursday and claimed that the image shown in the video was his, and that he was “hale and hearty”, and far away from Sitalkuchi.

“I am Abhro Banerjee, living and hale and hearty and around 1,300 km away from Sitalkuchi. BJP IT Cell is now claiming I am Manik Moitra and died in Sitalkuchi. Please don’t believe these fake posts and please don’t worry. I repeat: I am (still) alive,” Banerjee wrote.

So there it is. As I said earlier, take these claims with a bucketful of salt! These guys are already frustrated for being trounced in an election they fully expected to win!

Sonia Gandhi says Congress must draw 'uncomfortable lessons' from assembly poll results

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi also raised the matter of electing a new party president. She decided to set up a small group to "candidly understand" the underlying causes behind the party's dismal performance in the recently concluded assembly elections.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said that the party has to take note of its "serious setbacks" in the recently concluded assembly elections across India. Highlighting the fact that Congress failed to dislodge the incumbent governments in Kerala and Assam, and drew a complete blank in West Bengal, Gandhi said that she will set up a small group to "candidly understand" the underlying causes behind the party's dismal performance. "These will yield uncomfortable lessons, but if we do not look the facts in the face, we will not draw the right lessons," she said in a CWC meeting.

The crucial meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was convened to deliberate and introspect on the party's performance in the latest elections. The Congress fared poorly, drawing a blank in West Bengal and failing to win back power in Kerala and Assam, besides losing Puducherry. The party only came to power with the help of its ally -- the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) -- in Tamil Nadu. "To say that we are deeply disappointed is to make an understatement," Sonia Gandhi noted while addressing the crucial meeting of the top Congress body.

The Congress chief also raised the matter of electing a new party president. "When we met on January 22, we had decided that the process for electing a Congress president would be completed by end-June. The election authority chairperson, Mr. Madhusudan Mistri, has prepared a schedule. Mr. Venugopal will read it out to you after our discussion on Covid-19 and the election results," she said.

The chief ministers of the grand old party were invited to speak first on the Covid-19 situation. Following their address, general secretaries for the aforementioned states -- Jitender Singh for Assam, Tariq Anwar for Kerala, Dinesh Gundurao (in-charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry), and Jitin Prasada for West Bengal - were then invited to make their presentations.

"I expect them to brief us very frankly on our performance in their respective states. We want them to tell us why we performed well below expectation. These results tell us clearly that we need to put our house in order," noted Sonia Gandhi.

World's worst kept secret is now out in the open,

Senior BJP leader and former Governor Tathagat Roy has disclosed BJP's worst-kept secret about this election. "It must not be forgotten that a BJP electoral ticket carries with it substantial money for running the election. Or for other purposes!", he tweeted.

No wonder so many crooks seek it!

2 BJP MPs Who Contested And Won In Bengal Resign

Kolkata: In Bengal, the BJP's tally of 77 MLAs in the Assembly is down to 75. Two BJP MPs who contested and won have submitted their resignations to the Speaker on Wednesday afternoon on instructions of the party high command. The Trinamool has mocked the move as the BJP's bid to play safe in the Lok Sabha. The Trinamool has accused the Centre's decision to give Central security to all BJP MLAs in Bengal as misuse of taxpayers' money.

Nishit Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar were among the five BJP MPs the party fielded for the assembly polls hoping to form a government where they could play key roles. That didn't happen. Now the BJP clearly feels they are more useful in Parliament.

"The results in Bengal were not as expected. If the BJP had formed government, we would have a specific role. Now that is not the case so the party has said we should remain MPs and resign as MLAs. That's why we are doing it," said Mr Jagannath Sarkar, BJP MP from Ranaghat. He had won from the Santipur Assembly seat, both in Nadia district.

As MPs, both Mr Pramanik and Mr Sarkar have central security cover. So does Suvendu Adhikari, BJP's Nandigram MLA and leader of opposition in the Assembly. He has Z-Plus security.

The Union home ministry has recently said it would provide central security to all BJP MLAs, based on a review of their threat perceptions. The ministry will also foot the bill for it -- all of ₹ 1.5 crore per month.

"For two years, I worked with the BJP without much or a problem. But ever since 2nd May...the day the election results came out, the situation has changed. We need the security (cover). I feel our life is at risk. We have been elected by the people, but it is the failure of the state government that the Centre has to provide security," BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul of Asansol South told NDTV.

"Definitely we need security from the Centre because we cannot trust the Bengal government... If the elected MLAs don't feel secure, they can't work," said BJP MLA Subrata Thakur from Gaighata in North 24 Parganas.

The Trinamool has mocked both moves -- the resignations and the central security.

What a colossal waste of taxpayers' money especially in these times!

Why should MHA foot the bill of providing security to these MLAs? If at all you're that concerned about your party MLAs' security, then why not foot the bill yourself?

Ideally, these 2 losers should be asked to foot the entire bill of holding bye elections!

But no, this isn't corruption!

PMO humiliated me, tweets posted to tarnish my image: Mamata on Cyclone Yaas review meet

In just three weeks since the Trinamool Congress returned to power, the face-off between the West Bengal government and the BJP-led Central government has sharply intensified with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday skipping a review meeting on cyclone Yaas called by PM Modi.

Day after Mamata Banerjee skipped a review meeting on Cyclone Yaas chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the West Bengal Chief Minister Saturday alleged that the PMO has “humiliated” her and “tarnished her image by posting tweets” on the meet.

Stating that she “felt insulted,” Banerjee asked why BJP leaders and the governor were called to the review meeting when it was meant to be between the PM and the CM.

Mamata was referring to a tweet by BJP’s Sambit Patra showing a photo of PM Modi, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and other Central ministers waiting for the CM to turn up for the review meeting.

In just three weeks since the Trinamool Congress returned to power, the face-off between the West Bengal government and the BJP-led Central government has sharply intensified with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday skipping a review meeting on Cyclone Yaas called by PM Modi.

Further, sharpening her attack on the Centre and Modi, she said, “If the prime minister asks me to touch his feet for the welfare of the people of Bengal, I am ready to do that, but I should not be insulted”.

Elaborating on Friday’s events, Mamata said, “When we reached, the meeting had started. They asked us to sit… I asked them to allow us a minute to submit the report. But the SPG told us that the meeting will be after one hour. I saw empty chairs in conference room…I was told that the meeting was between the CM and the PM, but why were there other BJP leaders?”

“As part of some plan, they were showing some vacant chairs. Why would I sit when I could see political party leaders who were not entitled to attend the meeting,” Mamata was quoted as saying by ANI.

“I did meet the PM,” she added.

She further said that she handed over the report to the PM and took his permission before she left the meeting venue.

Though Mamata did not attend the review meeting, she along with Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay met Modi ahead of it and submitted two reports demanding Rs 10,000 crore each for the development of Digha and Sunderban.

In an “unusual move,” as pointed out by Trinamool leaders, Suvendu Adhikari, a former Trinamool leader, who had switched to the BJP ahead of state elections, and is the Leader of Opposition now, and other BJP leaders, attended the meeting, which was supposed to be held between the state government (CM and state officials) and the Centre (PM and Union officials). The ruling party has also blamed the Centre for indulging in political impropriety.

Meanwhile, as the Chief Minister did not the attend the review meeting, the Centre recalled Chief Secretary Bandyopadhyay to Delhi to serve the Union government. The Centre had just four days back on May 24 approved a proposal by the state to extend his tenure by three months till August 31.

The TMC has bit back at the Centre’s decision to seek the services of Bandyopadhyay alleging that it was because the
people of the state gave an overwhelming mandate to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy described it as “forced central deputation” of the chief secretary. “Has this ever happened since Independence? Forced central deputation of a Chief Secretary of a state? How much lower will Modi-Shah’s BJP stoop,” Roy said.

“All because people of Bengal humiliated the duo and chose Mamata Banerjee with an overwhelming mandate,” he added.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the decision was taken to derail the good work done by Bandyopadhyay, “a true soldier of Mamata Banerjee”.

Meanwhile, top BJP leaders have criticised Banerjee for not attending the PM’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah describing her conduct as “an unfortunate low”.

On Modi Govt’s 7th Anniversary, Congress Releases Seven-Point Chargesheet Of ‘Blunders’

The Congress listed out what it called the major failures of the BJP-led Central government, including a declining economy, rising unemployment and inflation.

To mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government’s seventh anniversary, the Congress released a seven-point charge-sheet of "blunders" as it accused the BJP of failing on every front and betraying the trust of the people.

The Congress also alleged that the Modi dispensation abdicated its responsibilities towards the people during the Covid-19 crisis.

Hitting out at Modi for his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that the Centre should come with a policy and should have the right intention and determination to fight the pandemic instead of just airing a monthly talk.

"You need the right intention, policy and determination to fight Corona and not just a pointless talk once in a month," Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi, on a day when Modi delivered his monthly "Mann Ki Baat" radio address.

The grand old party further listed out what it called the major failures of the government, including a declining economy, rising unemployment and inflation.

Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the last seven years have been a story of unprecedented devastation, abdication of responsibility and abandonment of India's people by a government that was showered with all the love and affection.

"This government is harmful for the country as it has betrayed the faith of people of India. It is betraying the trust and the innate faith the people reposed in prime minister Narendra Modi," he said.

"This is a deception of the worst kind heaped upon 140 crore Indians by a government they elected based on innumerable promises. After seven years’ time has come to do stock taking. Time has come to ask why the country is suffering," he said.

The Congress also came out with a 4.5-minute video, "Bharat Mata ki Kahani", listing out the "failures" of the government in the last seven years.

Meanwhile, BJP chief JP Nadda accused the Opposition of going into quarantine amid the second Covid wave and asserted that the BJP is carrying out relief work to help those affected by the virus.

Swapan Dasgupta Renominated To Rajya Sabha After Bengal Poll Defeat

New Delhi: Former journalist Swapan Dasgupta, who quit his Rajya Sabha seat to contest in the Bengal assembly polls as part of the BJP and lost, was renominated on Tuesday to the seat he vacated. The government made the re-nomination on Tuesday in what the Congress said was a "first".

A Home Ministry notification this evening read: "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to renominate Shri Swapan Dasgupta to the Council of States to fill the seat which has fallen vacant due to his resignation for his reminder term viz - 24-04-2022".

The President nominates renowned personalities to the Upper House on the advice of the government. The nominated members are drawn from fields such as literature, science, sports, art and social service.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted: "I think this is the FIRST time since the Rajya Sabha came into being in 1952 that such a thing has happened."

Aap chronology samjhiye!

So you first get nominated to upper house courtesy proximity to ruling party and not due to being someone from any of the fields recommended for nominating RS members.

Then get a ticket to contest WB assembly polls.

Then you are forced to resign as RS MP due to fighting polls as a political party's candidate.

Then you predictably lose the election miserably.

Then you get renominated to RS as prez nominated renowned personality!

Really! Fascists have really made a complete mockery of our democracy.

Not only this, this guy was nominated for RS in 2016 & his term was to end in 2022. But now with his renomination, his term will end in 2027!!

What a great democracy we are!

This also shows how spineless this guy Kovind is!

'Will resign if they...': Yediyurappa amid clamour for leadership change

Many state BJP leaders have rallied behind ** Yediyurappa, and said there is no plan to replace the chief minster.

Karnataka chief minister ** Yediyurappa said on Sunday he will continue to hold the top post in the state “as long as the Delhi high command has confidence in me” as the buzz of a change in the southern state’s leadership has been doing the rounds. "The day they will say they don't want me, I will resign and work day and night for the development of the state," Yediyurappa said in response to a question on attempts to replace him, according to news agency PTI.

"I'm in no confusion. They (high command) have given me an opportunity, I'm trying beyond my strength to utilise the opportunity for good. Rest is left for the high command,” he said while speaking to reporters.

The clamour for a leadership change in Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has grown louder with increasing instances of conflict within the BJP and the Yediyurappa-led government. The defeat in the Maski bypolls and wafer thin margin of victory in Belagavi Lok Sabha by-elections has also gone against the 78-year-old chief minister.

Yediyurappa’s relationship with BJP’s central leadership has soured over the last few months. The chief minister has been forced to secure his chair, assuage dissent within his own government and party as well as lead the calamity-prone state out of the raging Covid-19 pandemic at the same time. Many have also said his handling of the pandemic in the state hasn’t been very good.

New Delhi: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and raised the subject of Maratha quota, struck down by the Supreme Court recently.

Uddhav Thackeray had also asked for 10 minutes of face-time with PM Modi, sources say. Details are not known yet.

"I raised the issue of Maratha reservation," said the Chief Minister, who went with his deputy Ajit Pawar and others. Cyclone Tauktae relief for Maharashtra was also discussed.

On his separate meeting with the PM, Mr Thackeray remarked: "We may not be politically together but that doesn't mean our relationship has broken. I didn't go to meet a Nawaz Sharif. So if I meet him (PM) separately in person, there is nothing wrong with it."

Last month Mr Thackeray wrote to the Prime Minister and requested him to take steps to declare the Maratha community in the state as a Socially and Educationally Backward caste so they could claim reservation in education (12 per cent) and jobs (13 per cent).

The Supreme Court last week struck down the quota, calling it "unconstitutional". A five-judge bench said the 2018 law for Maratha quota had pushed reservation over the current 50 per cent cap.

On May 31 the Maharashtra government extended EWS (economically weaker section) benefits - including 10 per cent reservation - to the Maratha community.

Reservation was given to Marathas in 2018 by the Devendra Fadnavis government.

The Bombay High Court upheld the quota but its decision was paused by the Supreme Court.

PromotedListen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

Mr Thackeray's visit also comes after an editorial in the ruling Shiv Sena's mouthpiece - 'Saamana' - which said the battle to "destabilise politics of Maharashtra" would be fought in Delhi.

"The collision will prove to be decisive. To destabilise politics of Maharashtra, opposition will use the issue of the Maratha reservation as a weapon, then they will have to stop it in time," it said last month.

Opinion: Scindia, Now Prasada - So BJP Welcomes Dynasts, After All

One consequence of doing political commentary in an age when the government does not take kindly to criticism is that it becomes difficult to speak truth to power.

Far easier, then, to speak truth to the powerless. So each time an Opposition party faces a crisis or suffers a setback, the TV channels and commentators are at it again. Aren't things in a terrible way? Who do we blame for this latest problem? Shouldn't heads roll? And so on.

Fortunately for the media, the Congress is always ready with a crisis or two so that the Commentariat can stay in business. And the old questions about the future of young leaders, about the increasing irrelevance of the Congress, about the evils of dynasty, etc. are tiresomely recycled day after day, night after night.

The announcement that Jitin Prasada is joining the BJP should raise as many questions about the BJP as about the Congress. After all, Prasada's exit is no surprise. He had been on the verge of a similar journey two years ago. And while he is a bright, decent, personable and competent person, his exit will not have an earth-shattering effect on the Congress.

On the other hand, that the BJP should choose to gleefully welcome him raises several questions. Prasada is from a political family. His father was Political Secretary to Rajiv Gandhi. His upbringing has been full of privilege: he is what the BJP would normally describe as a key member of the 'Lutyens Elite.' This may have been fine when he was in the Congress, where none of these things matter. But how does the BJP reconcile his arrival with its own professed hatred of dynasty and its campaign against what it calls the 'Lutyens Elite'? And how about the air of privilege that surrounds such men as Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot, who the BJP also tried so hard to recruit?

It could be that the BJP has decided that dynasty is not such a bad thing after all. And that there is much to love and admire about what it once regarded as the privileged Lutyens class. It is instructive that when Prasada was welcomed into the BJP, his Doon School background was mentioned in favourable terms. So perhaps this is the new BJP, a party that genuflects before privilege. But if this is indeed the case, then I think we should be told.

There is another factor. The BJP, unlike the Congress, which has always been all things to all people, has focussed on preserving a distinct identity. When it starts accepting defectors from other parties, especially those who have previously attacked the Hindutva project, it risks losing that identity. We saw this in West Bengal where wholesale purchases were made of large chunks of the Trinamool Congress. In the process, the BJP's loyal, long-time workers were demoralised, and voters began to wonder how different the BJP really was if it was willing to embrace the very people it had once attacked. The result was a humiliating election defeat.

As far as the Congress is concerned, Prasada's exit is a sideshow. It has been clear for the last two years that the model of leadership chosen by Rahul Gandhi had failed. Rahul had surrounded himself with people like himself: young, Western-educated, smart, dynasts; the sons of older Congress leaders. While at an individual level, many of these people were competent and honest, the image they collectively conveyed was that of a party of entitled dynasts, or, to borrow Romesh Thapar's devastating phrase from the 1980s, the party of the 'babalog'. Rahul has ditched this model, though perhaps he has not been as candid about it as he should have been. Many of the young dynasts who regarded themselves as integral members of his team felt betrayed and upset by their sudden fall from favour; several of them say that promises made to them were not kept Further, they argue, it is not as though Rahul has replaced them with competent or smart people. He has chosen badly, surrounding himself with sycophants who flatter him and talk tough - a strategy that always appeals to troubled leaders. There is not one person in his inner circle who dares tell him when he is wrong, they claim.

So whether Prasada stays or goes makes no difference to the Congress. As far as Rahul is concerned, he is yesterday's man. But the Congress's real problem is not the young dynasts. It is that Rahul Gandhi still has not got the hang of fighting elections or of handling people. The Congress lost Assam, where it should have won, and the party is still not quite sure how that happened. In the case of Kerala, the defeat appears to have been a direct consequence of factional politics and poor leadership. The internal tussles had long been discussed and yet, the Congress did nothing. Worst of all is the way the party has handled Punjab. This is one state where the Congress has no real Opposition. The Prime Minister's charisma does not seem to extend to Punjab, the Akali Dal is still floundering, and the ancient BJP-Akali alliance has broken. It is also the one state where electoral victory has less to do with national factors than with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's personal popularity. And yet, even in Punjab, with elections only a few months away, there is dissent and rebellion. Instead of firmly putting down the revolt, Delhi has encouraged the rebels and undermined the Chief Minister's authority.

That is the real crisis of the Congress. Nobody expects it to win UP (where Prasada is from). But they did expect it to win Kerala and Assam. And nobody ever imagined it would become its own Opposition in Punjab. Dynasts will come and go. But the real danger to the Congress comes not from a privileged elite or even, the BJP. It comes from the inability of its leadership to manage the party.

"Could Be Sachin Tendulkar": Sachin Pilot Disses BJP Leader's Claim

Jaipur: Congress leader Sachin Pilot, in the spotlight after his former colleague Jitin Prasada crossed over to the BJP, today rubbished a BJP leader's comment that he was next. He also denied receiving any feelers from the BJP.

Rita Bahuguna Joshi, a Congress leader for 25 years before she joined the BJP, was quoted as saying that she had spoken to Sachin Pilot and he would join the BJP soon.

"Rita Bahuguna Joshi has said she has spoken to Sachin. She might have spoken to Sachin Tendulkar. She doesn't have the courage to speak to me," Mr Pilot told reporters who asked him to respond to Ms Joshi saying he was "uncomfortable" in the Congress.

Jitin Prasada quit the Congress on Wednesday saying he no longer felt he could function or help people in that party and describing the BJP as the "only national party" in the country today.

Mukul Roy Returns To Trinamool, Mamata Banerjee Says "More Will Come"

Kolkata: Mukul Roy, the BJP's first import from Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in Bengal, returned to his former party today along with son Shubhranshu, ending weeks of speculation.
"Ghorer chhele ghore phirlo (Mukul has returned home)," said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He was never a traitor like the others, she stressed.

Mr Roy added: "I feel great at seeing my old colleagues, after leaving the BJP. I can't be in the BJP." He described the Chief Minister as "the only leader of Bengal and India".

To the uncomfortable question of his repeated attacks on "Didi" in the past, Mr Roy replied: "I never had any differences with Mamata Banerjee."

Mr Roy drove to the Trinamool Bhawan an hour before the press conference and reportedly walked to his old room in the building that he left in 2017.

Operation Return of the Prodigal, reportedly led by Mamata Banerjee, has only just started, said Trinamool Congress leaders, hinting that more leaders were on their way back to the mothership.

Mukul Roy, a founder member of the Trinamool, was its General Secretary when he quit; the post has now gone to the Chief Minister's nephew Abhishek Banerjee, who first reached out to Mr Roy and his family.

Abhishek Banerjee last week visited Mr Roy at the hospital where his wife is admitted. The very next day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly spoke to Mr Roy on the phone to ask after his wife's health, reflecting the BJP's nervousness.

The homecoming of its leaders, including those who switched just before the April-May Bengal election, is part of the Trinamool's forward planning for 2024. Its goal is to prevent a repeat of 2019, when the BJP scored big gains at the Trinamool's cost.

That's the problem with buying out leaders from other parties with ill gotten money, they're with you till the time you've power or have any chance to get it.

Now Mukul should be ready to be summoned by ED/CBI in Narada scam!

"Central Agencies Harassing, Let's Join Hands With BJP Again": Sena MLA

The ED had, last year, raided several properties connected to Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. MLA Pratap Sarnaik's son Vihang, too, was questioned by the ED last year in a money laundering case.

Mumbai: A Shiv Sena MLA has said that the party should team up with the BJP again to save its leaders from being harassed by central agencies. In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, legislator Pratap Sarnaik has said the former allies must patch up, especially for the many upcoming corporation elections, including those of Mumbai and Thane.
Mr Sarnaik, who represents Thane's Ovala-Majiwada constituency in the state Assembly, said though the BJP and the Shiv Sena are not allies anymore, their leaders have good relations and that "we should make use of this".

"Several central agencies are behind me and other Shiv Sena leaders like Anil Parab and Ravindra Waikar, and they and their families are being harassed," Mr Sarnaik wrote in his letter which reached the Chief Minister's Office on June 10.

"If the Shiv Sena and the BJP come together again, these leaders can be spared such harassment," he wrote.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had, last year, raided several properties belonging to Mr Sarnaik in connection with a money laundering case. His son, Vihang Sarnaik, too, was questioned by the agency.

The Shiv Sena, which heads the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition government, had then accused the Centre of targeting the MLA.

Mr Sarnaik wrote in the letter that the Congress, which is an alliance partner in MVA, will go alone in the corporation polls, while the NCP, another alliance partner, is trying to lure and break away Shiv Sena's own MLAs into their fold.

The Shiv Sena ended its long-term ties with the BJP in 2019 following a dispute over power-sharing in Maharashtra. The Sena then came to power in an alliance with ideological rivals, the NCP and Congress.

Congrats mate...keep voting for BJP. As long as they are in power...hindustan is safe. We all know what will happen the day they are gone from centre (evidence in states like Bengal, Kerala etc).

So for greater good...people must keep BJP in power as long as possible, irrespective of what liberals or sensible essay writers propagate. We shall overcome all of them...keep trust in NaMo :)

India PM announces his biggest cabinet reshuffle

Indian PM Narendra Modi has inducted 36 new ministers into his government in the biggest cabinet reshuffle since he came to power in 2014.

At least 12 cabinet members, including IT and health ministers, resigned ahead of the reshuffle to make way for their colleagues.

The new cabinet will have 77 ministers, up from the current figure of 52.

The move comes ahead of elections in important states, including the crucial battleground of Uttar Pradesh.

The new cabinet has been announced amid criticism of the government over its handing of the pandemic and a faltering economy. The second wave of Covid-19 killed thousands and ravaged even small towns and cities.

Among those who were sworn in on Wednesday are Jyotiraditya Scindia, 50, a former opposition MP who switched to Mr Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last year; Sarbananda Sonowal, the 58-year-old former chief minister of Assam state, and former Congress party leader Narayan Rane.

Prominent names dropped

Health minister Harsh Vardhan is the most prominent minister who resigned on Wednesday.

Mr Vardhan has been widely criticised for his handling of the pandemic. In early March, he declared the country was "in the endgame" of the pandemic - less than a month before the second wave ripped through India, overwhelming hospitals and even crematoriums.

India's vaccination programme has also been criticised. Just over 5% of Indians have been fully vaccinated and 22% have received at least one dose. The pace of vaccination has picked up in recent weeks, but it's not enough to meet the target of fully vaccinating all eligible Indians by the end of this year.

The country has been averaging around four million doses per day for the past two weeks, but it needs to reach 8.5-9 million doses every day to meet its target.

IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is another prominent name who has been dropped from the cabinet. His resignation comes amid growing tensions between the federal government and social media platforms over India's controversial new IT laws.

Environment minister Prakash Javadekar and education minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank have also resigned. Experts say state elections in 2022 in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Punjab appears to have influenced some reshuffle decisions.

From the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, at least six ministers have been inducted into the cabinet. The BJP wants to retain Uttar Pradesh next year as a defeat there could bring major embarrassment to Mr Modi, who is an elected MP from the state.

Mr Modi has also inducted more women ministers this time. There were four women ministers in the earlier cabinet, but now the number is 11 with seven new members.

The list includes Anupriya Patel, the leader of Uttar Pradesh-based Apna Dal (Sonelal) - an ally of the BJP. Ms Patel was also a minister during Mr Modi's first term which began in 2014. Some of the other names are Meenakshi Lekhi, Annapurna Devi and Pratima Bhaumik.

So the supreme leader himself believes that Covid management in India has been nothing short of a disaster!

And he absolves himself of all blames! Convenient!

Struggling to salvage his image after a disastrous and widely criticised handling of the second wave of Covid-19 that hit India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his cabinet and fired seven senior ministers, including Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

Minister of Law and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, known for sharp exchanges with Twitter bosses recently, was also sacked and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who stood in as the official spokesman, was dropped.

As 43 ministers took oath, seven were sacked. The reshuffle is believed to be linked to crucial elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, along with three other states, that go to polls next year. Mr Modi now has 77 ministers, nearly half of them new. Anurag Thakur and Hardeep Puri are among 15 new cabinet ministers.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, who switched over from the Congress, Narayan Rane, Bhupender Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnaw were also sworn in as cabinet ministers.

A veteran BJP leader, Mr Prasad, like Mr Javadekar, is among the few who were ministers even in the previous BJP government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mr Prasad’s last few months in the IT ministry were taken up by a legal fight with social media giants including Twitter and Facebook, especially a relentless back-and-forth with Twitter over new IT rules.

All three were seen at the oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday evening.

The government said “20 per cent” ministers — a fifth of the council of ministers — had been dropped and the message was performance-linked.

The vacancies in major ministries signal a shake-up that could see ministers shedding extra portfolios and some being downgraded. The Big Four, however, are unlikely to be affected — the Ministers of Home, Defence, Foreign Affairs and Finance, NDTV said.

Bhupendra Yadav and Meenakshi Lekhi also joined the government. Seven new ministers are from Uttar Pradesh, which will elect a new government next year.

Besides UP and Punjab, India’s two of most politically vital states, elections will be held Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The BJP rules all the states except Punjab, where the Congress is in power. For the BJP, winning UP is a crucial test ahead of the 2024 national election.

Why the axe fell on 3 senior ministers

Two qualities have defined Prime Minister Modi's seven years at the helm.

His concern about his international image and his incredible political resilience.

The latter was at full display when 43 new ministers were sworn in on Wednesday evening.

The television media informed viewers about how this younger generation of ministers consisted of seven Phds, three MBAs, 13 lawyers, six doctors, five engineers and seven civil servants.

Sixty-eight ministers in all, we were informed, had graduate degrees.

Modi is obviously hoping the foreign media will pick up these snazzy details as has been lapped up by the Indian press.

And to show he meant business, he sacked Minister of Law and Justice, Electronics and Information Technology and Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Another major casualty (amongst several others) has been the axing of Minister of Environment and Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar.

Javadekar's handling of the environment ministry has been disastrous to say the least, but he was not shown the door because of his consistent and underhand attempt to dilute the foundational principles on which India's environmental protection hinges.

Rather, he was shown the way out because the prime minister believes he did little to save Modi from the mauling he received from the foreign media and social media over his handling of the pandemic.

Modi is unused to such public roasting especially on a platform like Twitter which he and members of his party used to great success in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and then during his years in governance.

Modi prefers to use this American social media platform as his primary public outreach tool having announced a slew of his policies on this platform during the last seven years.

Given the impact Twitter has on public conversation, Modi found it galling to face this growing tide of criticism made worse by a barrage of condemnation on digital news outlets.

The prime minister reacted as he always does when faced with a growing tide of criticism. He was determined to impose greater censorship on these media outlets.

Ravi Shankar Prasad was given the unenviable task of having to come up with a new set of rules to control and censor social media platforms and digital news outlets.

These new Information Technology Rules were kicked off in February.

As per these guidelines, Twitter was for a start asked to take down critical content against the government posted by thousands of agitating farmers.

The social network refused to take them off, but then agreed to do so when the government threatened to arrest their local employees.

This was followed by an even more bitter confrontation when Bharatiya Janata Party leaders displayed a '*******' on Twitter that they claimed was prepared by the Congress and anti-national.

Twitter flagged the BJP tweet on the ******* as being 'manipulated media'.

Twitter's unwillingness to comply saw the government order the Delhi police to raid Twitter's office on May 24 which the latter claimed were intimidatory tactics.

Relations between the BJP government and Twitter continued to spiral downward to the extent that in Uttar Pradesh, authorities went to the extent of filing an FIR against a man for tweeting that his dying grandfather desperately needed oxygen.

The man was accused of 'circulating a rumour' at a time when the authorities claimed oxygen was freely available in the state.

The UP government took matters a step further when its police wanted to question the Indian head of Twitter for allowing an elderly Muslim man's hate crime allegations to be published on its platforms.

Finally, matters came to a head when Twitter published an incorrect map of India. The government slapped a case against Twitter on July 5.

Media experts believe that the faceoff has only served to generate worse publicity for the Modi sarkar.

Ravi Shankar Prasad believed he was following the PMO directives in accelerating this confrontation.

Obviously, he was unable to understand that while Modi wanted to rein in the social media platform, he did not want his minister to adopt such a confrontational approach given that he and his government need both Twitter and Facebook.

And for Prasad to have held a press conference against the social media companies at the BJP headquarters was the final straw in his poor handling of this sensitive issue and one of the key reasons for his exit.

Prakash Javadekar has been the chief spokesperson of the party and yet despite being Modi's point man in fast tracking environmental clearances in the mnvironment Ministry, he too has been shown the door.

Javadekar knew only too well that this indiscriminate green signalling of clearances has been at the cost of our environment.

India stood 177 out of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index of 2018. In 2016, India was ranked 141 on the same index.

India also had the dubious distinction of having the maximum number of environmental conflicts in the world and these have only got worse with the Environmental Justice Atlas recording 271 cases in India on 2017.

The rapid deletion of forests, a severe shortage of drinking water and rising pollution levels across all our cities did not stop the United Nations Environment Programme from giving Modi the 'Champions of the Earth' award in 2018. This is the UN's highest environmental honour.

Was Modi deserving of this award given his track record on the environmental front and given that Javadekar had, under Modi's directions, diluted all our environmental laws?

One year later while speaking at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York Modi quoted from Gandhi to say, 'The earth provided enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed.'

The problem is that while Modi wants adulation for being an environmental crusader from world leaders, he forgets he is not living in a glass house.

Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg gave a sharp riposte to Modi when he was in New York by stating 'Dear Mr Modi, you need to take action now against the climate crisis, not just talking about it because if you keep going on like this, doing business as usual, and bragging about the little victories, you are going to fail.'

'And if you fail, you are going to be seen as one of the worst villains in human history in the future. And you don't want that.'

Javadekar has ensured fast track clearances for several of the Modi government's pet projects including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project which will see large scale cutting of mangrove trees that alone act as a buffer against cyclones.

The recent clearances given to the ambitious Ken-Betwa river linking project will result in the submergence of the beautiful Panna tiger reserve in the heart of Madhya Pradesh.

Again, this project has been cleared without any public consultations.

The expansion of the Char Dham road project has been done at the cost of the destruction of precious forests and of destroying the fragile eco-system of the Himalayas with the issue presently having been taken to the Supreme Court.

The list of such underhand stratagems being employed are endless.

It was the environment ministry's job to ensure that while Modi's image abroad was one of a green champion, within the country he continued to facilitate the unhindered plundering of our already fraught resources.

Javadekar tried to do a balancing act during the last seven years but the deadly Corona second wave which had thousands of corpses being thrown into the Ganga and saw endless lines of corpses waiting to be burnt in our overburdened crematoriums has blown a fuse on Modi's image of being a caring patriarch.

The prime minister did not forgive Javadekar for not having played a proactive role in protecting his image.

The closest example, party sources point to is how the new Minister of Urban Development Hardeep Singh Puri has been rewarded with the ministry of petroleum.

Puri had repeatedly waxed eloquent against television anchors when protecting Modi's Central Vista project.

Neither of these senior ministers as also Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan had the courage to warn Modi that as coronavirus cases began to ebb in December-January 2021, he should refrain from going to town about this being a major success story.

As a result, Modi crowed about India's success in curbing the coronavirus when he spoke at the World Economic Forum in January.

The prime minister spoke about how India 'has saved humanity from a big disaster by containing corona effectively'.

Again, neither of this trio thought it right to nudge him not to ensure thousands gathered to watch cricket matches at the Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat in early 2020.

This self-laudatory mood continued with millions being encouraged to attend the Kumbh Mela which turned out to be a super spreader event.

To peg the blame on these ministers as also to blame social media for carrying the critiques and criticism of millions of affected Indians is unfair.

Modi has a penchant for introducing policies without having held any prior consultation with the stakeholders.

To silence criticism or to believe that the key job of his senior ministers is to ensure that his image be kept intact whatever be the outcome of his policies or however much suffering the people in the country be inflicted upon is to expect too much even of someone as ambitious as Narendra Modi.

Highlighted part succinctly states all that needs to be stated about his reign of 20 years, first as CM and then as PM. All he cares about is preserving his own image, to hell with India and its citizens. Let them suffer due to his so obvious incompetence and illiteracy.

‘Perhaps some people are not happy’: Ruckus in Parliament as PM Modi introduces new ministers

New Delhi: Ruckus was witnessed inside Parliament on Monday as both houses convened for the Monsoon Session. On the first day of the session, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi started to introduce the new members of the Union Council of Ministers in the Lok Sabha, ruckus started with Opposition members protesting over several issues.

The PM expressed his disappointment over the chaos in Parliament on the first day of the new session. He said perhaps some members of the Opposition were not happy about the fact that women, Dalits and farmers’ sons had been made ministers in the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

“I thought that there would be enthusiasm in Parliament as so many women, Dalits, tribals have become ministers. This time our colleagues from agricultural and rural backgrounds, OBC community, have been given berths in the Council of Ministers.

“Perhaps some people are not happy about the country's women, OBCs, farmers' sons becoming ministers. That is why they don't even allow their introduction,” the PM said amid uproar by Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, outside Parliament, the PM had expressed hope that proceedings will happen in Monsoon Session in a disciplined manner, which will provide strength to democracy.

“I would like to urge all the MPs and all the parties to ask the most difficult and sharpest questions in the Houses but they should also allow the government to respond, in a disciplined environment. This will boost the democracy, strengthen people's trust and improve the pace of development,” PM Modi said.

“I have urged all floor Leaders that if they can take out some time tomorrow evening, then I would like to give them all detailed information regarding the pandemic. We want discussion inside Parliament as well with the floor Leaders outside Parliament,” he added.

The PM explained why the government wants a meaningful discussion on Covid-19 pandemic in Parliament.

“Vaccine is given in baahu (arms), those who take it become baahubali. Over 40 crore people have become baahubali in the fight against COVID-19. It's being taken forward. The pandemic has gripped the entire world. So we want a meaningful discussion.

“We want that the pandemic to be discussed on priority and that we get constructive suggestions from all MPs so that there comes a fresh approach in the fight against COVID-19 and shortcomings be corrected so that everyone moves forward together in the fight,” PM Modi said.

Deeply distressed: Venkaiah Naidu on ruckus in Parliament

The chairman pointed out that the only business that could be done in the past three sittings was a four-hour discussion on the government’s management of Covid-19 and a one-hour reply from the health ministry

Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said he was “deeply distressed” by the ruckus in Parliament. “I rise in deep anguish from the course of events in the first three sittings of the august House. I am not able to understand why the House is not allowed to discharge its responsibilities as mandated by the Constitution,” said the chairman.

The chairman pointed out that the only business that could be done in the past three sittings was a four-hour discussion on the government’s management of Covid-19 and a one-hour reply from the health ministry.

Talking about Thursday when TMC MP Santanu Sen snatched IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s statement regarding Pegasus spyware row and tore it, Naidu said, “I’m deeply distressed by the course of events in the House. Unfortunately, proceedings of the House hit a new low with papers being snatched from the minister and torn into pieces. Such actions are a clear assault on our Parliamentary democracy.”

When he was interrupted while speaking, he reprimanded the MPs and asked him not to test his patience as they have done in the past three sittings.

“Three weeks from now, we will be entering the 75th year of our Independence. The spirit of the celebration should not be marred by a dysfunctional Parliament. I appeal to the leaders to enable the smooth functioning of the House,” he appealed.

Past three days of the session were marred by chaos with the Opposition protesting over a wide array of issues, from the Pegasus row to farm bills to the Centre’s management of the Covid crisis.

Nitish Kumar reiterates demand for caste-based census

Kumar said they have shared their thoughts about a caste-based census in the House in February 2019 and 2020.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday reiterated his demand for a caste-based census, saying it will help in better decisions for the people’s development and welfare.

“We will request the Centre that a caste-based census should be done at least once,” said Kumar. “I have been saying for a long time that once caste-based census must be done, as it will give a clear idea about the population of different castes. It will help in planning for them. An attempt was made in 2010 but it was not done properly. It was completed in 2013 but never published.”

Kumar said they have shared their thoughts about a caste-based census in the House in February 2019 and 2020. He said it will help expand the benefits of government schemes and make it easier to work for development.

In 2019, the Bihar assembly passed two resolutions favouring a caste-wise census in 2021 and for continuing with the old 200-point roster system, which treats the university as the unit, for job quotas while opposing the 13-point system that treats the department as the unit.

In 2020, ahead of the state elections, the assembly passed resolutions against the National Register of Citizens and for the caste-based census in 2021.

The Centre has said, as a matter of policy, there will be no enumeration as per caste other than that for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) for the census. It has cited the provisions of the Constitution and reservation of seats for SCs and STs in Lok Sabha and in the assemblies as per their proportion in the population.

Kumar’s emphasis for a caste-based census is based on the proposal of the Justice Rohini Commission for the sub-categorisation of reservation for Other Backward Class (OBCs). The commission was set up in 2017 and has recommended splitting 27% reservation for the OBCs into different categories for equitable distribution of benefits among different sub-castes to ensure that the benefits reached the really deprived sections.

After several extensions, the panel submitted its report in February 2021 dividing 2,633 OBC castes on the Central list into four sub-categories for splitting the 27% quota into 2, 6, 9, and 10%.

India’s last caste census was conducted 90 years ago in 1931.

Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned Kumar what the ruling Janata Dal (United) or JD (U) will do if the Centre does not consider the caste census. “JD (U) has a stake in the Centre now with a cabinet minister. Why did JD (U) still have to persuade the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

Yediyurappa Breaks Down, Resigns As Karnataka Chief Minister

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister ** Yediyurappa broke down at a two-year celebration of his government today and announced his resignation, ending weeks of speculation raised by unrelenting calls for his removal by a section of the BJP in the state.
"I have decided to resign. I will meet the Governor after lunch," Mr Yediyurappa, 78, declared in a tearful speech at the Vidhan Sabha premises, talking about being tested constantly in the two years of his fourth term - possibly his last, given the BJP's age limit of 75 years for posts. Soon after, he walked to the building next door to hand in his resignation.

He will remain caretaker Chief Minister as his party decides on a replacement; sources say a decision could take two or three days.

"I thank PM (Narendra) Modi, Amit Shah and JP Nadda. They gave me the chance to rule as Chief Minister despite being over 75. I had decided to resign some time back. I thought it best to resign today as we mark completion of two years in this term," he told reporters.

"Nobody pressured me to resign. I did it on my own so that someone else can take over as Chief Minister after the completion of two years of government. I''ll work to bring BJP back in power in the next election. I've not given name of anyone who will succeed me," Mr Yediyurappa added.

Earlier, in his speech, he said: "When (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) was Prime Minister he asked me to be a minister at the Centre. But I said I will be in Karnataka."

The BJP had grown in Karnataka, he said, adding: "It has always been an agnipariksha (trial by fire) for me. These last two years it was Covid."

Lingayats will be angry, very angry. However, it had to happen sooner than later. After all, Yeddi too got the chair 2 years ago by using nefarious and corrupt means.

According to BJP sources, the party might choose four deputy CMs, one from each community — Dalits, Lingayats, Vokkaliga and Kuruba. Presently, there are three deputy CMs from Lingayat, Dalit and Vokkaliga castes.

lol, caste politics at its worst!

Basavaraj Bommai is Karnataka's new chief minister

The BJP has selected Basavaraj Bommai as its new chief minister in Karnataka. The decision was taken at the party's legislature meeting in Bengaluru today.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) legislature party has elected Basavaraj S Bommai as the new chief minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj Bommai was the home minister in the Yediyurappa government and was among the top contenders for the chief minister's post.

WHO IS KARNATAKA's NEW CM BASAVRAJ BOMMAI?

Basavaraj Bommai belongs to the Sadara Lingayat community. He is a close confidant of Yediyurappa and hails from the 'janata pariwar'. His father SR Bommai also served as Karnataka's chief minister.

Basavaraj Bommai joined the BJP in 2008 and has risen in the party ranks since then.

In the past, he held the portfolio of water resources. He is an engineer by profession and started his career with the Tata group.

Basavaraj Bommai is a two-time MLC and three-time MLA from Shiggaon in Haveri district.

WHY LINGAYATS ARE THE KEY TO BJP's SUCCESS

The outgoing Chief Minister Yediyurappa belongs to the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. This is a community that is considered to be the BJP's core support base in Karnataka and has historically influenced the state's politics.

Eight of the 20 chief ministers that Karnataka has seen since 1956 have been from the Lingayat community.

It is estimated that this politically influential community has a significant presence in about 140 of Karnataka's 224 assembly constituencies, and a decisive presence in about 90 seats. Today, the community forms nearly 17 per cent of the state's population.

Experts say these number suggest it is foolhardy for any political party to irk the Lingayat community.

SUPPORTERS CELEBRATE, CONGRATULATIONS POUR IN FOR BOMMAI

Basavaraj Bommai's supporters started celebrations soon after news broke that he has been elected as the next chief minister.

As expected the transition is smooth in Karnataka. Ex-CM protege Bommai picked as CM.
Unlike Congress, BJP does not behave like cattle traders during CM transition phase.

Picking another lingayat isn't caste politics!

Picking a naamdar isn't dynasty politics! Hail the hypocrite who shouts from every possible rooftop about perils of dynasty politics! Of course not when it suits him!

Yes, that true. There were border clashes a few days ago. 6 Assam police personals were killed.

:)) Is that the best spin you could put on this?

Yeddy lost his job because he's the only CM to have taken on Modi publicly. He's also been fairly independent in his operations and doesn't bootlick Modi-Shah. Maybe he's not extreme enough too. Was the only top BJP leader who openly came out supporting Muslims when that Tablighi thing was being used to demonize 10% of our population.

All that said, I've never been a fan of corrupt and temple-builder Yeddy. But it's also a sign of the times that I've noticed myself warming to him in comparison to the majority of his party's top leadership.

New Delhi: The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour of India, has been renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today. The renaming recognises the ultimate hockey hero and legend of the sport, Dhyan Chand.
The Prime Minister said the move was based on the numerous requests he received from across the nation.

"I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.

"Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!" tweeted the Prime Minister with #JaiHind.

The change comes at a time India's hockey teams have captivated the imagination of the nation with their performance at the Toyko Olympics.

The women's hockey team today narrowly missed out on a bronze medal drawing curtains on its spirited show at the Olympics. Yesterday, the men's hockey team won an Olympic bronze after a wait of 41 years.

"The exceptional performance of the Men's and Women's Hockey Team has captured the imagination of our entire nation. There is a renewed interest towards Hockey that is emerging across the length and breadth of India. This is a very positive sign for the coming times," the Prime Minister said in another tweet, just before announcing the new name for the award.

Dhyan Chand, whose birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day, won three Olympic golds for the country.

"Major Dhyan Chand is India's most legendary & loved sporting icons; it is only befitting that India's Highest Sporting Honour be named after him.

"His life and achievements have inspired generations of sportspersons who have achieved glory for India," Sports Minister Anurag Thakur tweeted after the announcement.

Commending the decision, former hockey skipper Ajitpal Singh noted though the recognition came in late, it's better than never.

"It's a welcome move. It's a good decision which the Prime Minister has taken. Sports awards should always be in the name of sportspersons and there is no bigger sportsperson in the country other than Dhyanchand ji. The recognition came late but better late than never," Mr Singh told PTI.

Olympic bronze-winning boxer Vijender Singh said honouring the memory of Dhyan Chand is a good move, but that alone will not be enough.

"Nothing against the move because we all respect Dhyan Chand ji's immense contribution but the government ought to do more than this to support sportspersons. They need facilities at the basic level, unless we can do that, mere renaming of awards won't make much of a difference," the boxer was quoted saying by news agency PTI.

Launched in 1991-92, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹ 25 lakh. The first recipient of the Khel Ratna was chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Some of the winners in recent years include cricketer Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal, among others.

Congress hits out at govt over ‘manhandling’ of women lawmakers in Rajya Sabha

In a letter to Rajya Sabha chairperson Venkaiah Naidu, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Opposition Leader in the Upper House, condemned “unacceptable (use of ) force” and “manhandling of the MPs including women members”

The Congress on Thursday hit out at the government over the alleged manhandling of women lawmakers in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with Rahul Gandhi saying this was the first time in India’s history that parliamentarians were “beaten up” inside the Upper House.

In a letter to Rajya Sabha chairperson Venkaiah Naidu, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Opposition Leader in the Upper House, condemned “unacceptable (use of ) force” and “manhandling of the MPs including women members.”

“A very large number of security personnel, who were not part of the regular ... watch and ward staff of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat were deployed. They used unacceptable force and physically manhandled Members of Parliament, including women members,” he wrote. He added the incident was shocking and also an “unprecedented insult to our democracy and the very dignity of the House.”

Khrage said Opposition MPs were stopped from protesting against the General Insurance (Amendment) Bill on which he said there was a “wide consensus” that it should be sent to a select committee for a review. He called the government’s approach “authoritarian” and said the Opposition will continue to struggle against the “assault on Parliamentary democracy.”

Gandhi separately condemned the alleged assault. “Today (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh)... are attacking the Constitution... Whenever we try to raise the voice about minorities or women... they (the government) do not let us speak. First time ever in the history of India, lawmakers were beaten up in Rajya Sabha. This nation is wise... there will be a storm to uproot this government. Congress’s works remind India that Indians can stand in front of any power.”

On Wednesday, women Opposition MPs accused male marshals of pushing them around in Rajya Sabha. “The female marshals were stopping us (from protesting). When we asked them to move away, the male marshals came forward and pushed us. One of my colleagues fell on the floor,” Chayya Verma, a Rajya Sabha member of Congress said.

Phulo Devi Netam, Verma’s party colleague, echoed her saying the government deployed the marshals in three layers. “The male marshals started pushing the female lawmakers. Do not they know how to respect the female parliamentarians?” she asked. Another lawmaker added that everything was on record and called for an inquiry.

Prahalad Joshi, the parliamentary affairs minister, called the claims of women lawmakers “bogus” and a “blatant lie”. “Nothing like this has happened. All the CCTV cameras should be checked. In fact (they) manhandled the male marshals. They grabbed these male marshals by their necks. They were especially from TMC (Trinamool Congress). ...together pushed the female marshals,” he said. He added they have demanded that a committee should be constituted to inquire into the matter.

Shortly before the Upper House was adjourned sine die on Wednesday, Opposition lawmakers staged a walkout following a ruckus. They objected to the presence of security personnel during the passage of the insurance bill. The Opposition has been objecting to the passage of key Bills without discussion and putting them to vote.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament came to a premature end on Wednesday when it was adjourned ahead of schedule. Protests by the Opposition and repeated disruptions marred the session.

Good ones

Only these two?

You didn't like the fortifying rice plan?

Or are you confident that Modi will continue the trend of doing worse than previous governments in every aspect.

So in this case, fortifying ration shop rice with more stones :yk2

I do not believe in other ones. Anyway in India, BPL public are getting lots of freebies, not suffering from malnutrition like in 80's & 90's so fortified rice/ not they are fine!

Sedition case against Samajwadi Party MP for equating Taliban occupation of Afghanistan with
India's freedom struggle

The charges against SP MP Dr Shafiqur Rahman Barq include sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 295A (outraging religious feelings)

An FIR has been registered against Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, Shafiqur Rehman Barq, and two others for allegedly praising the ’s move and comparing it with India’s freedom struggle.
SP MP Barq was booked for allegedly defending the Taliban and saying that the Taliban was fighting for the freedom of Afghan people on the lines of India

Sambhal police said a case was registered after a complaint was received by regional vice-president, Rajesh Singhal, at Sambhal Kotwali late on Tuesday.
Besides the SP MO, police said two others were also named in the FIR after they made similar statements and uploaded similar content defending the Taliban, on their social media accounts later.
Sambhal Superintendent of police Chakresh Mishra said, “A few statements were made by the SP MP at his press meet where he was seen defending Taliban’s move and comparing the same with India’s fight for its freedom during British rule. The video of the incident had gone viral on social media. The Taliban has been declared as a terrorist organization by the government of India and praising it or defending its moves is an act of a traitor. Thus, taking cognizance of the video and considering the complaint received, a case has been registered against Barq under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, etc) and 295A (deliberate or malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion).”

“Two others—Mohd. Mukeem and Chaudhary Faizan—have been booked too for making similar remarks on their respective Facebook accounts,” he added.
Mishra said, “Defending such terrorist outfits is a punishable offence and anybody supporting such content or promoting it would not be spared in the future as well."

Shafiqur Rehman Barq, while addressing a press conference in Sambhal on Tuesday had come in support of the change in Afghanistan and had said that the Taliban was fighting for freedom of Afghan people on lines of India. Barq was seen praising the Taliban and comparing the move with that of India’s freedom struggle.

He was also seen praising the Taliban for giving tough competition to powerful countries like the US and Russia, as it prevented them from settling in. The video of the press conference was widely shared on
social media and was condemned by many. Taking strong offence to his statements, UP’s deputy CM
Keshav Prasad Maurya had slammed Barq for making such statements and targeted the opposition parties including the SP, BSP and Congress, accusing them of doing appeasement politics.
“The SP can say anything. If they give such kind of remarks, then what is the difference between them and Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan?” he said.

SP MP Barq, meanwhile, has dismissed the charges levelled against him and denied “praising” the Taliban. Talking to media after the video of his press meet went viral, Barq said, “I have not made any such statements. What I said has been misinterpreted and being propagated unnecessarily. I am a citizen of this country and not Afghanistan. What is happening there is their internal matter and I’ve got nothing to do with it. I am in support of the Indian government and its policies.”

Barq, a five-term MP and a four-term MLA is known for being in controversies over his statements in the past as well

Karnal lathi-charge: Haryana govt has no right to remain in power, says Sena

On Saturday, police lathi-charged a group of farmers heading towards Karnal to protest against a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was attended by Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, state BJP chief Om Prakash Dhankar and other leaders. At least 10 people suffered injuries in the police action.

The Shiv Sena on Monday lashed out at the Haryana government over the lathi-charge on farmers and said the police action against the protesters was like the "second Jallianwala Bagh". The Shiv Sena, in its mouthpiece Saamana, said when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was inaugurating the renovated Jallianwala Bagh complex in Amritsar, a second Jallianwala Bagh was happening in Haryana. “The seeds of cruelty being sown by the government will bear sour fruits. This is for sure...The Manohar Lal Khattar government has no right to remain in power,” the Sena said in its editorial.

Referring to Union Minister Narayan Rane incident, the Sena also questioned why the critics of the Maharashtra government remained silent on Saturday’s incident in Haryana. “The farmers in Haryana were lathi-charged on their heads because they raised slogans against CM Khattar. A Union minister speaks of attacking the chief minister of Maharashtra and when action is taken against him legally, the state government is called intolerant,” the Sena, which is a part of the ruling Maha-Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, said.

The Sena also called Centre stone-hearted over the ongoing farmers' protest against the three farm laws and said that PM Modi hasn’t met the farmers, who have been protesting at the borders of Delhi, demanding the removal of the legislation.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government has also come under fire over an officer’s remark about the treatment of the protesters during their protest. Ayush Sinha, Karnal’s sub-divisional magistrate, was heard in a video ordering police personnel to “break the head of the protesters” on Saturday.

Several political leaders in Haryana, including deputy chief minister Dushyant Singh Chautala, have condemned the official’s remarks. Chautala promised action against Sinha and said his comments do not meet the ethical standards expected from officers.

Chandan Mitra, Editor And Former Rajya Sabha MP, Dies

New Delhi: Chandan Mitra, editor-politician who had been ailing for some time, passed away late last night, tweeted his son. He was 65.

A former Rajya Sabha MP, Chandan Mitra resigned as printer and publisher of The Pioneer - an English daily - in June this year.

"Shri Chandan Mitra Ji will be remembered for his intellect and insights. He distinguished himself in the world of media as well as politics. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," tweeted PM Modi.

Ram Madhav, a senior member of the BJP's ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, remembered the late leader as a good friend and offered condolences to his family.

Chandan Mitra had quit the BJP in 2018 and found his out with the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool, a party he had once blamed for letting loose a "reign of terror" in Bengal. He told NDTV at the time that he made the choice to work for the "betterment" of the state.

BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta shared a throwback picture of Chandan Mitra - whom he called his closest friend - which was taken during their school trip in 1972.

"I lost my closest friend--editor of Pioneer & former MP Chandan Mitra--this morning. We were together as students of La Martiniere & went on to St Stephen's & Oxford. We joined journalism at the same time & shared the excitement of Ayodhya & the saffron wave," Mr Dasgupta tweeted.

"I am posting a photograph of Chandan Mitra and me together during a school trip in 1972. Be happy my dear friend wherever you are. Om Shanti," he added.

Fellow Stephanian and college senior Shashi Tharoor recalled Chandan Mitra's work as his campaign manager during the college election.

"Deeply saddened by this news. Chandan was my campaign manager in my successful race to be President of the St Stephen's College Union Society, served in my Cabinet & succeeded me. We remained in touch over the years, ironically till I returned to Delhi& politics separated us. RIP," tweeted Mr Tharoor.

'Cow Only Animal to Inhale, Exhale O2': Allahabad HC Cites Lord Shiva, Ram, Pb Ruler to Prove Point in Order

Allahabad High Court Judge while denying a bail to a man accused of cow slaughter said that the cow should be declared India’s national animal and added that cow is the only animal that inhales and exhales Oxygen.

In the 12-page judgment, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav said that cow has an important place in the Indian culture and worshipped as a Goddess.

“Scientists believe that Cow is the only animal that inhales and exhales Oxygen,” the judge observed in the judgement accessed by News18.

The High Court was hearing a bail plea of one accused Javed who was held for stealing the cow and allegedly slaughtered it in Sambhal district. Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav denied the bail plea and and stressed that cow protection and promotion is not just about one religion but it is the culture of the country. It is responsibility of every citizen to save the culture irrespective of the religion.

“Panchgavya, which is made out of Cow’s milk, curd ghee, urine and cow dung, helps in treatment of several incurable diseases,” he further observed.

The order also says that a cow’s existence is integral to Indian culture, therefore, consuming beef cannot be considered a fundamental right.

“Right to life can’t be snatched away merely for another’s pleasure of taste, and that the right to life is above the the right to kill. The right to consume cow-beef can never be a Fundamental Right,” the order noted.

The order further went on to claim that it is a tradition in India to use ghee made of cow milk in each oblation during a yajna because “this gives special energy to sunrays, which ultimately causes rain.”

“It is not that only Hindus have understood the importance of cows, Muslims have also considered the cow as an important part of India’s culture during their reign, the Slaughter of cows was banned by 5 Muslim rulers," the court ruled.

“Babur, Humayun, and Akbar also prohibited the sacrifice of cows in their religious festivals. The Nawab of Mysore, Hyder Ali, made cow slaughter a punishable offence," it added.

What a bunch of LOSERS we are becoming.

This nation is LITERALLY becoming stupider each day.

We consulted a Zoology professor from the Delhi University (DU) who explained the basics of the respiratory system in animals. Soma M. Ghorai, Assistant Professor at the Department of Zoology, Hindu College, said, "Of the 21 per cent oxygen we inhale, our body utilises hardly 4-5 per cent of it. Rest is released. We exhale carbon dioxide and other gases along with the residual oxygen. This process stands same for all living beings, including cow."

"Because Of Taliban Crisis...": BJP MLA Explains Fuel, Gas Price Hikes

According to Reuters, as of July 2021, the top six countries selling crude oil to India are Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Nigeria, the US and Canada

Angered by the price of petrol, diesel and gas, and looking for someone to blame?
Try the Taliban and the crisis in Afghanistan.

This is a Karnataka BJP MLA's justification for the increase in prices - an increase that began in May, with hikes over several consecutive days, and continued into the following months.

"Because of the Taliban crisis in Afghanistan, there has been a dip in supply of crude oil. Consequently, prices of LPG, petrol and diesel are rising. Voters are mature enough to understand the reasons for price rise," Aravind Bellad, MLA for the Hubli-Dharwad West constituency, said.

India is the world's third-biggest importer (and consumer) of crude oil, but Afghanistan does not figure among its major sellers.

According to news agency Reuters, as of July 2021, the top six countries selling crude oil to India are Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, the United States and Canada.

The situation in Afghanistan does have the potential to affect oil and gas prices, but such an impact is as yet unclear, with the global community (and particularly oil-producing nations) still cautious in their dealing with the Taliban and a nascent Afghan government.

In June Reuters reported that India's crude oil imports had hit an eight-month low, as refiners cut down processing in the face of a tumultuous second wave of the coronavirus.

The unrelenting increase in fuel (petrol and diesel) and LPG cylinder prices over the past several months have triggered fierce criticism of the Narendra Modi government from both the opposition and members of the public, crores of whom are struggling to make ends meet during a pandemic.

The government has defended itself by blaming the opposition; last month Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said it could not lower costs because it had to bear the cost of oil bonds the Congress-led UPA government had issued to companies.

The Congress hit back hard, with the party and Rahul Gandhi accusing the government of having earned over ₹ 23 lakh crore in the seven years that the BJP has been in power.

When the UPA left office a LPG cylinder was ₹ 410 to ₹ 885 now - up by 116 per, Mr Gandhi said. Petrol prices have risen by 42 per cent and diesel by over 55 per cent since 2014, he said.

Devotees will buy this too. Have already seen so many messages from WhatsApp university explaining the rationale behind the blatant loot of public finances by this corrupt regime.

At least he didn't blame Nehru & Congress! Hang on, Nirmala is already blaming Congress for her master's greed.

Petroleum Minister Says UPA Era Outstanding Oil Bonds Hurting Economy

Defending the government amid sky rocketing fuel prices in the country despite international crude rates stabilising, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday said that around ₹ 1.5 lakh crore of oil bonds issued by the Congress-led UPA regime remain outstanding, which has limited the financial capabilities of state-owned oil companies.

"In ''India's Lost Decade'' known for rampant impunity and policy paralysis, UPA Govt saddled future govts with Oil Bonds. More than ₹ 1.5 lakh cr of these remain to be repaid, thus tying up crucial resources, limiting fiscal space & restricting financial freedom of oil marketing companies (OMCs)," he tweeted.

Keeping up with the attack, the minister, who was retaliating to the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's charge of the government running on gas, diesel and petrol (GDP), further tweeted that "the important exploration and production sector was fund-starved. As a result, our import bill continues to be high. Nearly ₹ 3.6 lakh crore profits of oil companies was instead used for price stabilisation by a remote controlled govt of ‘economic experts' to hide behind a ‘All is Well' smokescreen".

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Gandhi while attacking the government for hiking fuel prices, had said that Rs 23 lakh crore has been collected in the last seven years by increasing prices of gas, diesel and petrol, which he alluded to as GDP.
