[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Is Rohit Sharma finished or has he still something left in the tank?

Is Rohit Sharma finished as an explosive batter outside powerplay?

In my opinion, Rohit Sharma has now surpassed Virat Kohli as the greatest Indian white ball batsman. Batting like that at 37 is unreal. He is now not only India's best but also Asia's best white ball batsman.

Rohit Sharma is definitely not finished. He is currently way ahead of the other Asian batters like Virat, Babar etc. Virat is no way near him atm.

Rohit could have prolonged his T20 career though but it was a perfect moment for him to retire after winning the world cup. He is looking for some similar opportunity to say good bye to other formats.

PP bullying not enough for odis. For t20is fine. In odis u need to play big innings

He should have taken retirement from ODIs and continued to play T20 cricket. His temperament for playing the longer format of the game has finished now.
LOL he is by far one of if not the best ODI openers going around.

The way he goes around in the PP is amazing.

Rohit Sharma has been in a whole different mode in ODIs since 2023.

He's the best PP basher that's why.

Ever since he aged and got burnt out he's a walking wicket at over 10 onwards, but the insane value he provides from overs 1 to 10 makes India damn near unbeatable because he gets the team to 100 in 10 overs lol

Rohit between 2014-2021 was a bit slow starter in the powerplay but once set would hit big tons on a regular basis.

The current version plays quickfire knocks in the powerplay but doesn't bat all the way through.

Ofcourse, you won't get everything.

He is not finished at all, not yet.

In the latest ICC rankings, Rohit Sharma moves up to second place after scoring 157 runs in the series against Sri Lanka and overtakes his teammate Shubman Gill for the 2nd spot.

Rankings are for fake kings and stat padders.
Rohit is a beast in the PP and surely has left his legacy in LOI.

On his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views saying that opener Rohit Sharma will not leave the Mumbai Indians franchise and will continue playing for the franchise in the IPL 2025 season:

"Even if you think like Rohit, it's not wrong at all. I don't want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it's super. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn't matter for some of those players. That's the thing."

Scott Styris reminisced about spending time with a teenage Rohit Sharma during the IPL, when they were teammates at the Deccan Chargers franchise, in an interview with local Indian sports media:

“It (IPL 2008) was my first opportunity to be a teammate and see (and hear of) Rohit Sharma. He was with us at the Deccan Chargers. He was 19 or 20 years old at that time and I could see then that this kid was something special. I've just come back from Sri Lanka where I commentated on India vs Sri Lanka, caught up with him there and he’s still the same guy that he was 16 years ago.”

Rohit has a great chance to cement a legacy in Test cricket with the coming Australia tour. He will get to play 5 tests and if he can have a good tour with couple of hundreds, he will then have centuries in England, Australia and Windies.

He needs that one memorable performance in either Australia or South Africa, preferably Australia and he has a great chance to do it.

Yeah, I think he has done well in England now his stats aren't shabby in Nz too he needs a top notch performance in Aus and he can easily become our third best test opener ever.

Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel stated that either MI would release him or Rohit would part ways with the franchise:

“Will he stay or will he go? It's a big question. Personally, I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him.”

Jonty Rhodes recalls coaching Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians, Rhodes commented in a YouTube podcast:

“I mean he [Rohit Sharma] hasn’t changed at all. It’s so ridiculous. I just picture his walk when he came out to bat and he would have a few throw-downs in the nets or even shadow-hitting, it was just majestic. He didn’t practice as hard as Sachin Tendulkar. That’s for sure. Maybe he practices away from the nets at times but just his technical ability and I think he doesn’t have the best technique.”

“He’s being criticised for not having a lot of foot movement, but because he is so relaxed at the crease and those hands flow well. It’s been great to see him because he stayed the same, true to himself and I think that’s so important.”

Rohit Sharma against Bangladesh in Tests: Five innings, average of 8.80 runs

Stunning catch by Rohit Sharma

He proving once again why he's tactically the best Indian captain since MS Dhoni. Field setting, bowling changes, he is playing with an attacking mindset and trying to force a result whereas Bangladesh are playing defensive cricket which won't take them anywhere.

He is hiding behind the team man, selfless aggressor batter at the top gimmick to prolong his career.

He has been a brainless hack for two years now.

Rohit Sharma during an interview on a YouTube channel:

"In the second innings, I was very grateful to Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli for giving me the opportunity to bat up the order. It wasn't an easy decision to promote me in Tests. They trusted me. They asked me to play one practice match, which I did. I got out on the very first ball, but I realized that I didn't have any other choice. It felt like a second birth in Test cricket. I knew I had to grab this opportunity, whether it meant opening, batting at No. 5 or 6, or even lower down the order."

"My response to them was clear: I'll play my natural game and won't take the pressure of trying to survive. I'm going to play freely. If the ball is there, whether it's the first ball of the Test or not, I'm going to hit it. They gave me the freedom to do what I wanted. Ravi Bhai was very eager for me to open in Tests for a long time. He told me in 2015 that I should consider it as an option. He wanted me to open, but the decision wasn't in my hands."

In the first innings, Rohit was not even able to bent down a little more and cover the wickets .He must have easily covered his stumps,if he is fit .he is completely a walking wicket in trying conditions

Rohit Sharma said in a video released by the BCCI:

“The timing had to be good because otherwise, if you don't time the jump well, it is very easy to miss on. I would say I was lucky enough to hold on to it. I put the jump at the right time and put my hand to the right place at the right time.”

Speaking with a local media outlet, Harbhajan Singh explained why he named Rohit ahead of Dhoni as a better Indian skipper:

“I chose Rohit above Dhoni because Rohit is people’s captain. He goes up to the people and asks them what they want. His teammates connect with him very well. But Dhoni’s style was different.”

“He didn’t talk to anyone. He wanted to convey his thoughts through his silence. It was his way of communicating with others.”

“Dhoni and Rohit are completely different leaders.”

“MS Dhoni will never go to a player and will ask him what field you want. He will let you learn from your mistakes.”

“I remember a game where I was fielding at the short fine leg and MS Dhoni was keeping. Shardul Thakur was bowling and the first ball Kane Williamson hit him down the ground for a boundary. The next ball, he bowled at the same length and Williamson played the same shot. I went to MS and asked him to tell Shardul to try and bowl different lengths. MS said to me ‘Paji If I tell him now, then he will never learn. Let him learn by himself.’ His thought process was that when Shardul got hit for boundaries, he would learn it quickly. That was MS Dhoni’s way."

“Rohit is very different. He will go and talk to each player. He is someone who will put his arm around your shoulder and tell you what he wants from you. He will give you that confidence that yes you can do it.”

Major Blow For India, Rohit Sharma May Miss All Important Test vs Australia. Reason Is...

India could miss the services of skipper Rohit Sharma during one of the first two Test matches in Australia due to personal reasons which have communicated to the BCCI. The Indian team will embark on tough five-Test series in Australia starting November 22 in Perth and there is a possibility that Rohit could give either the first or the second game in Adelaide (December 6-10) a miss. "There isn't any complete clarity about the situation. It is understood that Rohit has intimated to the BCCI that there is a possibility that due to a pressing personal matter, he might have to skip one of the two Tests at the beginning of the series," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"In case, the personal issue is sorted before the start of the series, he might play all five Tests. We will get to know more in coming days," he said.

The 37-year-old Rohit played both the home Tests against Bangladesh. India will next host New Zealand for a three-Test rubber starting October 16.

In case Rohit misses a Test match in Australia, the in-form Abhimanyu Easwaran is likely to be his cover although Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are also players with enough experience in the opening slot.

Easwaran will also be in Australia with the India A team which he is supposed to lead.

However, there is no word who the vice-captain of the Test team will be as there was no official deputy for Rohit during the recent home series against Bangladesh.

"I think we need to understand that we have got a lot of IPL captains in this team. When you talk about the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, hopefully a Yashasvi (Jaiswal) going forward.

"There are a lot of players who have led their franchises," Abhishek Nayar told the media on the eve of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

There are three candidates for the role -- Rohit's white ball deputy Gill, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has led India in a Test in England, and keeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

"I wouldn't look at them as youngsters anymore. Yes, they are youngsters in terms of age and the amount of cricket they have played. But, I think overall, mentally and in their development as a cricketer, I think they have the leadership qualities that are required. You don't need to have a vice-captain that should be designated," Nayar had stated when asked about the red-ball vice-captaincy.

"I think overall, the thought process of these youngsters is of a senior player. It's of someone who has played a lot of cricket."

Lol he is an intelligent man..think did so deliberately and tactically

Of all the places ,I thought rohit will be super good at Perth. If rohit misses it,it's better to give abhimanyu/sai sudarshan atleast 2 chances in nz series instead of roasting them directly in Perth. In that way we will know our path beyond rohit in tests.

WHy do these players sit out for personal problems in important series. Kohli did twice. One series at home.

They will open with KL
I think kl may not want it even team management ask him. there is cut throat competition for no 5 spot.if sarfaraz proves himself there in Perth of all the places, it's the end of KL.so he may not risk as rohits replacement have to vacate after 2 /3 tests .This is not dravid zamana for kl to play with out any output. He knows he doesn't have much to hang on as soon as he was dropped for 3rd odi in Sri Lanka after 2 failures.

Former India cricketer and NCA head VVS Laxman on Friday praised Rohit Sharma during a a gathering at a local conference:

"For leaders, it's humanly impossible not to make mistakes. We won the toss and we elected to bat first and it was counterproductive (because) we were bowled out for 46."

"Who went to the press conference? It was Rohit Sharma. He accepted that 'yes, I misread the wicket'. Leaders take that ownership of (their) decisions."

"It's not necessary that every time the decisions are right, but you take the ownership and then whenever the team doesn't do well, you go and face the flak. Whenever the team does well, you promote the guy who actually requires that recognition and that limelight."

"Great leaders are the best performers in a particular team, (a) classical example is Rohit Sharma. What he has done, the way he's leading the Indian team, is just phenomenal."

"He (has) told (his teammates) that, 'okay, this is the style of cricket I want our team to play', and he's going out and doing that, (the) selfless style of batting and playing the game. In the bargain, that can (also) impact and affect his performance. But he's making that decision and that bold statement saying 'I'll back you as long as you go out and play the brand I want our Indian team to play'."

Ahead of 2nd Test against New Zealand

Rohit Sharma is 2 sixes away from equaling the all time India record for most sixes in Test cricket.

He should retire after the Aus. series. That would be best for him and the team.

Some other players that should seriously think about calling it a day.

Kohli
Jadeja
Ashwin
Smith
Khawaja
Wokes
Wood

Others who are not too far behind
Lyon
Starc
Hazlewood

If rohit again continues to play intent and 50 balls ar Max nonsense,it's better to give sai or eswaran 2or 3.matxges in aus with out hesitation. Kohli should be on notice.and he should improve himself. Aswin,Jadeja will be there for another 1 to2 years I believe. Axar can replace jadeja at home but no alternative for aswin.washi have to improve.rest all I agree .after ashes next year ,Aussies may leave in bunch.

Rohit vs Southee in Tests
8 inngs
126 balls
51 runs
4 dismissals
Avg 12.75
14th instance of Southee dismissing Rohit in all International cricket
- the most he has dismissed a batter and the joint most Rohit has fallen to a bowler, alongside Kagiso Rabada

Rohit Sharma bags a nine-ball duck in 1st innings of 2nd Test against New Zealand

Most Ducks as an Indian Captain in International Cricket:

16 - Virat Kohli (250 Innings)
13 - Sourav Ganguly (217 Innings)
11 - MS Dhoni (330 Innings)
11 - Rohit Sharma (143 Innings)
10 - Kapil Dev (115 Innings)

Rohit should avoid coming out to bat as soon as he sees Southee with the ball. Just come out when Southee is tired. :danish

Rohit is done and dusted now. He can only Play a short cameo that its ,which is not enough for test matches.

Rohit Sharma requires a phenomenal performance in the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia to cement his status as a top-tier Test batter. But with pace-friendly pitches anticipated, doubts linger over his ability to deliver.

He will play at least till WTC finals irrespective of his form. :danish
That's due to the dumbest decision taken by bcci. They had appointed a 36plus player as test captain on permanent basis who has only eng 21 series to show in sena.Since last year his customary one innings per series also disappeared due to his fitness issues. We know what's coming and we can't clean the mess for next 6 or 7 imp matches. I hope whoever comes in his place for 1 or 2 matches in bgt will score a century to put pressure/Shame on him

Similar to kohli he should retire in test matches after bgt and in odis after ct.its looking beyond pathetic with his dropped catches and lack of fitness. He is not able to bent further down while reverse sweeping just before the ball he got out in second innings. Santner got more wickets in the match than his runs tally. If he goes at this rate ,no one will miss him even if he miss entire bgt and same goes for kohli too.

He is finished. Doesn’t have the fitness nor the hunger to succeed in Test cricket.

He Is So Dangerous': Smith, Labuschagne, Lyon Pick Rohit Sharma as Opener in World Test XI

Australia’s Test team members have picked a World XI and have picked Indian captain Rohit Sharma as the opening batter. The likes of Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Usman Khawaja heaped huge praise on the Indian batter, lauding his style of playing the game and his trademark pull shot.

“Rohit at number 2. A bit of Ying and Yang, being able to put the pressure onto the opposition, take the game on," said Labuschagne in a video shared by Fox Sports on YouTube.

“He is so dangerous, takes the game on with the new ball. He plays his shots but also has solid defence when the situation demands it. He puts the bowler under a lot of pressure," said former Australia captain Steve Smith.

“His presence at the crease will jump on anything short. Obviously, he can as the power to hit some very big sixes," said Lyon highlighting Rohit’s magnificent stroke play.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja said Rohit fits in the World XI because he has been consistently scoring runs.

“I think he just picks himself," said Khawaja in the video. “He just scores runs. Consistency is the key and he’s consistent," he concluded.

Rohit Sharma's Test batting rankings took a hit, plummeting nine spots to 24th in the ICC men's rankings. This drastic drop follows underwhelming performances in three of four innings against New Zealand, with scores of 2, 0, 8, and a lone half-century in Bengaluru. This marks Rohit's lowest ranking in six years.

In December 2018, Rohit briefly dropped to 44th after scoring 63* and 5 against Australia in Melbourne. However, he rebounded strongly with centuries against South Africa in October 2019, jumping to 17th. Between February 2021 and February 2023, Rohit consistently ranked within the top 10, peaking at fifth globally with an 813 rating in September 2021.

Rohit Sharma has averaged just 13.55 in this home Test season for India

Lowest batting average by an Indian captain at home in Tests (min. 500 runs)

29.83 - Sourav Ganguly (868 runs)
31.62 - Rohit Sharma (854 runs)
31.91 - Kapil Dev (766 runs)
32.19 - Tiger Pataudi (1481 runs)
39.76 - Rahul Dravid (517 runs)

Speaking after the close of play on Day 1 of the 3rd Test match between India and New Zealand, Anil Kumble explained:

"These kind of dismissals, if you go back to even to the Bangladesh Test match when it was seaming away from him, the ball which holds its line from that angle, is troubling Rohit Sharma consistently. Tim Southee exploited that. And today Matt Henry is exploited the same length. He opens up that right shoulder, which certainly makes him vulnerable. And if you look at the seam, it's just holding its line. It's looked to go away from the right-hander. There's not much swing here. The ball just hits the deck, stays with the line, and opens up thinking that the ball's coming back in."

Rohit Sharma never had it in tests in the first place.

How did he even become captain?

His entire test career built on few good innings(at max 10) and strong pr campaign around talent /intent machine. Everyone can see all his shenanigans have disappeared. He has 2 away centuries only till now and one in wi of all all the places. He should gracefully retire asap and not to let entire his name mix with player's who played after past due date like msd, sachin, dhawan etc.Same goes for kohli.

What a pathetic performance it was. Dude just threw it away in a small chase. If I'm coach I'm giving him a mouthful. The disrespectful way he threw his wicket away. Absolute pathetic.

He doesn't deserve a spot in Indian Test team. Let alone as Captain.

He was never a particularly good test batter. Struggled to hold onto a place in the side for most of his career but managed to revive it by becoming a fairly good hometrack bully late in his career. But now he seems absolutely finished.

I think the concern would be his ODI form plummeting too because that is the format where he has always been most important for India.

Personally I don't see him making it to the next World Cup.

Jaiswal is there as a back up already.Rohit and kohli are unnecessarily hogging to their places.Sai Sudharshan is there for kohli back up.I think ct will be the last thing for both of them. They don't have any leverage left now after a home whitewash and bgt next up is not helping them any further.

Why can't he get in peak physical shape? No one has ever put pressure on him to lose weight. The weight he has put on in the last few years has had a detrimental impact on his ability to play long grinding innings, there is a reason why he now looks to attack and always try to hit his way out of trouble

So we should be prepared to lose the CT too now that its confirmed that these 2 will be part of final XI

As per reports, final decision on both of them will be taken after bgt performance. So even they got mauled there in aus, our timid selection committee will throw them only after ct25.Unless gambhir is really mad after bgt, they will play ct25 for sure.

Aaron Finch while speaking on a program on a sports media outlet:

"I disagree with Sunny (Gavaskar) on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife's going to have a baby...that's such a beautiful moment…and you take all the time that you need in that regard."

Michael Clarke, who was a part of the same discussion:

"Take nothing away from New Zealand but it tells me India are fatigued. Some of their shot selection, the use of bowlers and even Rohit to come out and say he wasn't at his best - just think it was mental fatigue. They've played so much cricket without a break, but it'll be a little kick up the backside for them."

In an interview Sanjay Manjrekar dissected Rohit's batting in Test cricket, he said:

"I will never say that he is reckless because he is finding his own way to ensure that he gets runs, to get the team to win. He clearly doesn't trust his defence anymore, you could see that, there was a LBW appeal and that must have just made him feel unsettled ever more. So the next thing that he looks to do is counter-attack and he did that because the target wasn't a huge one, and who knows a couple of shots here and there and he would have maybe replicated that Bangladesh run chase,"

"But the shot that he played to get out was where he was trying to hit the ball into the stands rather than just make the connection. He is missing a few of his big hits. There was one in the first Test match as well, where he stepped out and tried to hit the ball out of the ground, so he is mis-hitting a lot of his attacking shots and he is not trusting his defence enough. So that is a real problem for Rohit Sharma currently,"

Former India cricketer, Dinesh Karthik, was of the opinion that all Rohit had to do was have faith in his technique and not try to attack without a clear thought process behind the same, he said:

“So, the one thing that Rohit Sharma is not doing, which he did very well when he took up his role as an opener, is trust his technique. Yes, attack is an option. But that will only come better if you trust your technique. Because you are worried you might get out defending or playing a soft shot, you are trying to attack. Then, that is fraught with risk. Because if it doesn't come off, it looks silly,”

“In Test cricket, what I feel is that intent is getting him into a safe space where he feels when in trouble, use that. It's not a method where he's using it like he's using it in white-ball cricket, one that the Indian team needed. Here, a lot of times, when he is beaten a couple of times when he is put under a little bit of pressure, an immediate instinct is to play an attacking shot fraught with risk. Now, with that comes the ability to get out as well,”

“I think his safe space right now, in Rohit Sharma's case, is to attack. Then in that, he feels he is a lot more comfortable doing it because he's seen that success. But when it doesn't go right, it always will give the image that it has given so far,"

Rohit Sharma Not Travelling To Australia Ahead Of Test Series. Report Reveals Reason

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma will not be travelling to Australia with the rest of the side ahead of the first game of the five-match Test series, according to RevSportz. The squad is all set to leave for Australia in two batches on Sunday and Monday. However, as far as Rohit is concerned, nothing concrete has been confirmed yet. The report further said that Rohit is not travelling with the side due to "personal reasons".

Head coach Gautam Gambhir will address the media in a pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Monday. The first Test match against Australia will start on November 22 in Perth.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir in a pre-departure press conference before leaving for Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25:

"At the moment there is no confirmation, but you guys will let you know exactly what the situation will be."

"Hopefully, he is going to be available, but everything you will get to know before the start of the series."
