No we need to check the consistency of a player. even if the player was struggling for form he should battle it out and contribute. He does not have that and he plays like he is forever out of form.There is never a purple patch for him apart from few customary centuries. As far as I know he scored 7 consecutive half centuries in 2017 bgt in india. Rest all its highly inconsistent and random performances

48 Innings 1757 Total runs 5 centuries 6 half centuries .so after deducting 800 runs => 957 /37 gives 25.86 avg


Kohli


Total Runs 1421

1 century 8 Half centuries => 500

After Deducting => 921/39. = 23.61

I have not taken exact runs after century and half centuries,it will take down their average much further and shows India's premier batsmen abysmal batting performance

I think there was a time (when he was in peak), Rohit/Dhawan/Kohli used be Top 3 and he had no chance to play in LOIs as a result (always was prefered as backup opener when someone was injured). And in tests he was a regular opener for some time... His LOI aspirations (and IPL exploration) made him to somehow get accomodated in Indian team (in middle order or/and wicket keeper).

By the time he got settled into the team (after Dhawan's exit), though he had experience on the side, he somehow lost (got spoilt actually) with various responsibilities/flexibilities to handle. Though one may get irritated and angered at how he is failing / being inconsistent with his role offered today (opening in tests & middle order in ODIs) in spite of an assured spot in the team (experience on his side), but we should not forget about the process he had to go through till now... After all he is a human being and can succumb under different demands...

Am I sure had he played "only" as Tests (+ODI) Opener right from the beginning to till now, he would have flourished well... I agree he is a bit selfish when it comes to T20, can't go full on... (Even Kohli, Rohit have similar issues). Modern T20 is for upcoming youngsters, and as I aways say you should keep refreshing your T20I team with at least 3-4 new players every year...

Yup. One of Kohli's century was one 180s and Rohits was 130s. So the actual numbers are even bad. So considering all this KL isn't the biggest problem of India in tests right now. (Not away atleast)
 
KL and Pant are India’s two best batters overseas in last few years.

The only problem with KL is that in India or Bangladesh, he has been poor while Pant, Jaiswal, Gill all have done better than him in these homelike conditions. Even Sarfaraz and Shreyas have shown more assurance than him in these conditions.

That’s why he gets all the flak and hate because his overall stats builds a very mediocre image for him. Now question as always is that would you drop your second best batter or perhaps the most all round batter overseas in current form just because he is rubbish in Asia? I would stick with him but not have high expectations.
 
KL Rahul has had a decent run in Test cricket, scoring three fifties in his last 10 innings.

Unfortunately however our batters seem to have forgotten the art of converting starts to centuries.

That's it. Better than kohli and rohit now but that's not saying much. Much rather try new players.
 
He is a better test batter than Rohit Sharma taking their entire career into consideration.

Anyone pulling career average to make a case for Rohit would confirm his status as stat geek with no insights of the game.
 
Life is tough if you are KL Rahul. He seems rock solid but still can’t get big runs. He will play a lot more test cricket but likely to keep an average around 35 mark.
 
The way India's batting is doing right now, a player like Rahul actually makes the team on merit.

I will say this about him, he has the potential to play some amazing knocks in tough conditions. And he has in the past aswell. It's his lack of consistency though that is the most frustrating thing about him. And I don't see that changing.

No he should be thrown out in all formats. Not good enough. Mental midgets have no place in Indian cricket. They shouldn't but he has a huge PR backing thanks to sunil shetty

KL Rahul Set To Be Rested For England Series, Selectors Assure His Selection For Champions Trophy 2025: Report

KL Rahul is reportedly set to be rested from the upcoming white-ball games against England, which is set to begin on January 22 with the five-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series as well.

According to a report by Times of India, Rahul will not be a part of the upcoming limited overs fixtures against England but has been assured by the selectors that he will be picked for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.

“Rahul has been assured of his spot in the Champions Trophy. Hence, he will be rested from the England series," an unnamed source was quoted as saying.

After an optimistic performance at the top of the order in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, Rahul will also opt out of the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy games for his state, Karnataka.

Rahul has been India’s go-to wicketkeeper in the 50-over format and had a rather impressive performance in last year’s 50-over World Cup. He finished the tournament with 452 runs at an average of 75.33 in the 11 games. His form in the shortest format, however, remains a concern and as a result was not picked for India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad for the 2024 edition.

It remains to be seen if Rahul will be India’s go-to man for keeping behind the wickets now that Rishabh Pant has made his return to international cricket. The southpaw is yet to make his mark in the 50-over format since his return and this could mean that the selectors favour Rahul for the middle-order and wicketkeeping job for the upcoming ICC event.

The three ODIs against England will be India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy that they will play in the UAE. While Pakistan are the designated hosts, the BCCI and the PCB have come to an agreement where the Indian team would play all their games in a neutral venue, including the knockout games.

India had last won the tournament in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni when they beat England in the final by 5 runs in the rain-affected match that was held in Birmingham in June 2013.

Anil Kumble is not happy with Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma's decision to send KL Rahul down the batting order in the ongoing Champions Trophy. While speaking on a show on a sports media outlet, he questioned their tactics:

"He [KL Rahul] should have come ahead of Axar Patel. I know Axar did a good job of getting that partnership with Virat Kohli but someone like KL Rahul coming in at that stage and this is what he can do - if he gets to 30, he will ensure that you cross the line."

“He does that and he does that consistently. Yes, he missed out on one opportunity in the last game against New Zealand, but otherwise KL is a class act. This will certainly give him a lot of confidence.”

I opened the batting there and then to come here and bat low seems a bit different, but this is how I’ve played white-ball cricket in the last four-five years."

“I’m quite used to going up and down the order, so I’m just happy getting a chance to play in the middle and whatever role is given, I think it’s really helped me understand my game a lot more and I’ve had to work on boundary-hitting a lot more in the last year or so, because the last ODI we played in Sri Lanka I batted at No. 6, so I knew that’s where I’ll be batting and needed a left-hander in the top order."

KL Rahul Has Accepted His New Role As Number 6 Batter: Coach Sitanshu Kotak​


KL Rahul's demotion to No. 6 has been discussed threadbare but India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said the wicketkeeper-batter has accepted the new role wholeheartedly, which has given the batting a lot more depth. Rahul has enjoyed immense success as the No. 5 batter, scoring over 1,000 runs at an average in excess of 50, but since the ODI series against Sri Lanka last year, he has been batting a position down. However, Rahul has shown signs of adapting to the demands of the rather unfamiliar slot, and it was evident when he made an unbeaten 42 against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal.

Alongside Hardik Pandya, the right-hander added quick 34 runs to shut the door firmly on Australia.

Kotak highlighted the flexibility of Rahul, who came almost an hour early to the scheduled net session.

"He is someone who can open, someone who can go at 4 or 5, and someone who is doing what number 6 is demanding. He adapts well and he is very happy in the role he is performing," said Kotak.

The former Saurashtra batter said having a solid batter at No. 6 has helped the team.

"When he starts performing at that number that obviously helps him also because it is a different situation he is going in. So, that is great for the team as well.

"But whatever I have spoken to him, he is happy to do whatever the team requires, and he has been doing that," he added.

Kotak said there was no undue pressure on India ahead of the final, as the senior players, who have gone through such situations, have been keeping the dressing room calm ahead of the big day.

"The seniors, young players... they all talk. That is something very priceless. Rohit, Virat, Hardik, those guys are talking along with Shami and Jadeja. They have 15-20 years of experience.

"They are talking to the players who have been playing for two or three years. So, some things, obviously, you learn with experience. But listening to the guys who have that experience, and they are talking about their 20 years of learning, that is a great environment," he added.
