KL Rahul has stepped in as India’s captain for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, revealing that he was informed of the decision only a day before the official announcement. With Shubman Gill still recovering from a neck injury sustained during the first Test and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer also sidelined, India needed a temporary leader to guide the side in Ranchi. Having previously led the national team in 12 ODIs, three Tests and one T20I, Rahul said he was told he “might have to lead” at the last moment, but affirmed he is ready to embrace the responsibility once again.
