Nazmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh has broken record of Sami Aslam of Pakistan. He is now the highest run getter in under 19 ODIs with 1747 runs. Sami Aslam of Pakistan has 1695 runs besides his name.

Congratulations Nazmul, for your brilliant performance.Another vety talented young batsman emerging for Bangladesh.

Hope he has a better international career than Sami 'can't get past 20 in 4 innings in Bangladesh in Tests' Aslam, who will probably not play for Pakistan again for at least a couple of years. Well behind the pecking order now, and failing against any half-decent attack in A/warm-up games etc. doesn't help either.

Correct. Agreed.

In an interview with The Daily Star last month, Bangladesh batting consultant Neil McKenzie stressed the importance of players using this coronavirus-induced break to reflect on their careers. Cricket in Bangladesh has been halted since March and while cricketers have been doing their bit to stay fit with indoor workouts following BCB-provided guidelines, the best thing for them now would be to reflect on their careers so far and analyse their flaws.

It seems like Bangladesh batsman Nazmul Hossain Shanto has taken McKenzie's words seriously, just as any student should, as the left-hander has been reflecting on his fledgling career during the enforced cricketing hiatus.

"I have watched the two innings that I played against Pakistan [in the Rawalpindi Test in February]. Also, I watched the T20 century I scored [For Khulna Tigers against Dhaka Platoon in the last BPL]," said Nazmul.

Re-watching the highlights reel was not just a way of relieving sweet memories as Nazmul also analysed his mistakes from his previous matches.

"I have not made many big scores. So, I was just trying to see how I played shots and what I did during my maiden T20 century. But I watched the highlights of the Pakistan game more. Everyone knows how formidable Pakistan's bowling line-up is. So, I watch how I survived during that game. I realised that I should have scored at least a century in that game. I was actually wondering what I could have done to handle the deliveries better and was just trying to understand what I should do when I get similar chances in the future," explained Nazmul, who got starts in Rawalpindi but failed to convert.

Having played only four Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is since his international debut in January, 2017, Nazmul was enjoying seemingly the best time of his career so far after a successful BPL and domestic career that was followed by some promising sparks in the international arena. However, instead of fearing a loss in momentum, the 21-year-old has held on to a more mature and optimistic view.

"I am actually not interested in worrying how things will go once cricket resumes. I think it is better not to think about cricket during this crisis. I will think about cricket once everything is normal and hopefully we will get time for that. It will be great if I could start the way I left off. And even if I can't do well right away in the first or second game, maybe I will pick it up in the third game," explained Nazmul.

Nazmul's penchant for the longer version of cricket was also evident as the left-hander talked about taking lessons from some historical Test innings.

"During this break, I watched highlights of Bangladesh's maiden Test and also a few Ashes games. I have watched Brian Lara's Test 400 a number of times. It is not easy to score 400 in a game. I was looking at the types of shots he played. Aside from this, I also watched Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes's record opening Test stand for the country when they put on 312 against Pakistan in the second innings [in 2015]. Actually, I have been trying to watch the matches that had some incredible knocks. A lot can be learned from these types of games," said Nazmul.

From Nazmul's demeanour during this break, it can be hoped that the left-hander, having thus far taken McKenzie's advice to heart, may also live up to the expectation of the South African coach by returning to cricket 'hungrier than ever'.

Bangladesh name new captain for all three formats

BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that the new captain has been handed over the reins for a year.

Bangladesh have named Najmul Hossain Shanto as their new captain for all three formats. Shanto's first big assignment will be the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies later this year.

Shanto was impressed as captain in the two-match Test series against New Zealand, which Bangladesh drew 1-1 at home in November-December 2023.

He was also the captain during the away tour against the Kiwis, where Bangladesh managed to win a game each in the ODI and T20I series.

In his short stint as skipper, Shanto has three wins in 11 matches.

Shanto replaces Shakib Al Hasan, who was captain in the white-ball formats for Bangladesh. Shakib was recently diagnosed with a retinal condition, though the statement said that the medical team was confident of managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.

The BCB also announced the appointment of Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the new chief selector.

Good decision.

I think he is the best man to lead right now (someone who is young and with captaincy experience).

Shanto receives high praise from Mushfiqur for captain’s knock against Sri Lanka

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s match-winning 122* against Sri Lanka was lauded by former skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, who described it as a “one-man show”.

After being asked to bowl by Sri Lanka, Shanto’s Bangladesh showed initiative on the field, taking wickets at regular intervals to bowl out the tourists for 255 in the 49th over. In the second innings, Shanto led from the front.

Coming in after the Tigers had lost Litton Das (0) off the very first ball, Shanto took charge. Despite losing Soumya Sarkar (3) and Towhid Hridoy (3) in no time, Shanto kept his calm and stitched important stands with Mahmudullah (37) and Mushfiqur (73*). His 165-run stand with the latter helped Bangladesh seal the game in the 45th over.

His unbeaten 122 was inclusive of 13 fours and two sixes and won him the Player of the Match award.

After the game, his senior team-mate Mushfiqur showered the 25-year-old with praise.

“He was excellent. It was a one-man show tonight. I think leadership brings out the best in some individuals,” Mushfiqur said. “Shanto is definitely one of them. He really enjoys the captaincy. Shanto is the sort of guy who has the mentality to take responsibility as a challenge. I knew that he would score runs at the highest level.”

After a temporary stint at the helm, Shanto was appointed as Bangladesh’s full-time skipper across formats in February 2024.

Mushfiqur also believed that Bangladesh had the right atmosphere in the dressing room.

“Atmosphere is very important. We don't worry about the outcome. We try to keep our processes intact. We don't expect all seven batters to get centuries every day but as long as he sticks to his strengths and practice routines, it was just a matter of time.”

The wicketkeeper-batter believed that Shanto had improved on his batting, and now knew how to make the most of good starts.

“He plays more fluently. He can be more dominating (now). He used to get 50s or 60s after getting a good start but now he is playing long innings,” Mushfiqur added.

“The way he took a single to mid on just after getting that hundred, showed that he was so calm and thoughtful towards the team. We kept telling each other that we should keep getting the next 20 or 30 runs so that they don't get a sniff in vital moments."

The second and third games of the series will also be played in Chattogram, on March 15 and 18 respectively.

Worst strike rate for a Top 5 batter in T20Is this year (min 12 inns)

94.73 - Najmul Shanto (BAN)
105.07 - Malan Kruger (NAM)
106.51 - Chaloemwong Chatphaisan (THA)
108.10 - Khalid Kail (OMA)

Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp said that skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto has been coping with the pressures of captaincy, he told while talking to a sports media outlet:

"The captaincy of any team, let alone an international team, is obviously difficult because you're so much in demand. So it's not just worrying about your own game. It's also then conversations with teammates, being in meetings, having to do media work, conversations with the coaches and staff. So you're getting pulled all over the place. So, that's a huge challenge with captaincy, at any level, but especially international level. So, that's something that he's working and still getting used to."

"I thought his approach in the last Test (against Pakistan) was excellent. Look, I don't personally think so (captaincy affecting his game). He's training well. He's trying to improve his game."

"He is just one innings away. I think we saw glimpses of what he can do. It's just now doing it over a longer period of time."

Najmul Hossain Shanto delivers a captain's knock! He reaches a solid fifty against India in Chennai, notching his fourth Test half-century. Tackling the mighty Jasprit Bumrah in home conditions is no easy feat.

Needs to convert that 50 to a ton. Plenty of time in hand, 2days left. Bat sensible.

I remember he scored 163 in Sri Lanka. That's his highest.

Scored one century against NZ in Sylhet too.

Other 3 are against Afghans and Zimbabwe.

In sha Allah.

A century would take BD to 300-350 maybe.
4 at home and one ton away from home, in 29 test matches averaging less than 30. And this dude is the test captain! Kya baat hai.

You are making it sound like other BD batters are scoring centuries after centuries. LOL.

Here is the list of top Test centurians from BD:

Mominul - 12 centuries from 64 games
Mushfiq - 11 centuries from 91 games
Tamim - 10 centuries from 70 games
Ashraful - 6 centuries from 61 games
Nazmul Hossain Shanto - 5 centuries from 30 games
Mahmudullah - 5 centuries from 50 games
Shakib - 5 centuries from 70 games
Litton - 4 centuries from 44 games

Nazmul didn't do that bad by Bangladeshi standard but his recent form has been poor. He needs to bounce back.

Times have changed. BD in 2000s and early 2010s era batsmen were limitations or had a poor first half of their career hence many of them took time to make up. Post 2015 WC, a player batting in the top 4 averaging less than 30 in 29 test match who is getting all the good technical support, facilities to learn and train, batting coaching analysis etc. Not good enough. Bangladeshi batting standards should be up. Players cant be excused anymore. This isnt 2000s.

Except Tamim and Mominul rest of them on the list got there were/are mid-lower order batters in test. Ashraful scored a century on debut against Muralithan and co in Sri Lanka thats worth more than all of Shantos test hundreds on batting pitches!

Bangladesh’s skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto ruled out of the remainder of the Afghanistan ODIs with a groin injury, leaving their chances of winning the series in jeopardy. According to reports, Shanto is also expected to miss the first Test against West Indies.

Najmul Hossain Shanto has stepped down as Bangladesh's T20I captain, though he will remain in charge of the Test and ODI sides

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed confirmed that Shanto informed the board of his decision, and while no T20 series are immediately scheduled, the board will address the captaincy later.

Shanto had previously expressed reluctance to captain all formats, and his injury during an ODI against Afghanistan in November led to Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking over the Test and ODI leadership. Under Miraz and T20I captain Litton Das, Bangladesh saw mixed results, with Litton guiding the T20I team to a 3-0 win over the West Indies.

Shanto, who became Bangladesh's all-format captain in February 2024, struggled with form in T20Is, averaging just 18.76 in his 24 matches as captain. His future in the T20I squad will depend on his performance in the ongoing BPL, with Litton Das emerging as a potential candidate for the T20I captaincy ahead of their series against Zimbabwe in March.

Fantastic knock from Shanto today against Sri Lanka in the 1st test match of the series.

His sixth in Tests, 2nd vs Sri Lank,a and first since November 2023.

Bangladeshi Shan Masood. He will be back to single-digit scores by the second innings.

NAJMUL HOSSAIN SHANTO BECOMES THE FIRST BANGLADESH CAPTAIN TO SCORE 2 HUNDREDS IN A TEST MATCH

Najmul Hossain Shanto's 273 runs in Galle this week are the most by a Bangladesh captain in a Test match

Shanto seems to enjoy playing against Sri Lanka. Scored quite a few centuries against them.

Even in 2023 WC, Shanto scored heavily against SL (BD won that game).

Shanto steps down from Test captaincy

Najmul Hossain Shanto announced that he will be stepping down from Test captaincy after Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat of an innings and 78 runs in the Colombo Test on Saturday.

"I have an announcement to make — I am stepping down as the Test captain of the Bangladesh team," Shanto announced in the post-match press conference.

"I no longer wish to continue in the Test format, and I want to clearly send out one message to everyone that this is not something personal. It’s a decision I’ve made entirely for the betterment of the team, and I believe this will benefit the team," he added.

"In my personal opinion, having three captains in the dressing room makes things difficult for the team. That’s why I’ve stepped aside — for the sake of the team’s betterment."

"It is entirely up to the cricket board whether they want to have separate captains or go ahead with three captains — that’s completely their decision," Shanto further stated.

"I hope no one misunderstands this as something I’ve done out of personal reasons or emotional frustration."

It was assumed that Shanto would step down from his role as Daily Sun earlier reported that Shanto was 'seriously considering' stepping down from Test captaincy once the series concludes.

"The possibility of him staying on as captain is very slim," a close associate of Shanto told the Daily Sun before the start of Colombo Test.

Shanto's decision comes after BCB's abrupt and poorly communicated decision to remove Shanto as ODI captain.

Weird decision to step down. It's not like Ban play a lot of test cricket that having different captains would hold back their team like what Shanto cited as a reason. Bangladesh cricket needs stability. The board and their captains do not let it happen.
