Pitch for the 1st Test between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi

3 days to the start of the play. This wicket is going to be a rank turner from looks of it. I can see Ifti playing in here for left handers in Aussies lineup. Both Nauman and Sajid would also be playing from looks of the wicket.

Looks dry and should turn.

This is how the pitches should be prepared against the Sena countries.

Not the typical Pindi surface then. Should take turn.

Win the toss and bat first.

On TV, Pakistani pitches look like grey glass from day 1. Dry, lifeless. Not a patch of green. Not a great spectacle, visually.

I hope this one at least looks brown :)

Whatever the pitch maybe. If there's any stadium that will assist the pacers it is this one

already shaved bald and with hairline cracks around a good length, lets hope pak dont get hosit on their own patard here, this xi aint the best players of spin as taijul exploited in series against bang, where abid saved pak.

Yep we should remember we ourselves aren't the greatest players of spin, though we will probably cope with it better than the Aussies.

Just don't want to get stuck in a 4th innings chase against Lyon turning the ball square. Last time he was in the subcontinent he took an 8-fer in India and a 7-fer in Bangladesh. Hoping for a favourable toss.

What is that huge thing in the middle. Dont tell me it is already worn out

Let cricket start now. Enough drama with security, trolls etc.

Want to see a good series between Pakistan and Aus.

In the good 'ol days, Pakistan bowling attack didnt worry about winning or losing tosses! I feel our fast-bowlers may not be that effective here.

Nathan Lyon:

"We're actually training about three pitches over on the centre wicket (block) and it wasn't spinning that much," Lyon told reporters from Rawalpindi ahead of Australia's second training session today.

"I know we've got a little bit more grass on the wicket we're training on compared to what looks like the match wicket.

"The (Test) surface looks similar to a UAE wicket at the moment.

"There's not much grass on it, I daresay it's going to be pretty shiny come day one.

"So I'm expecting it to be pretty nice to bat on for the first couple of days then look for it to hopefully spin, and reverse swing may come into it.

"It's not the type of wicket that I'd probably produce if I was still doing my curating stuff, but those days are long gone."

Road ka Pata chal jaye ga when the spinners rip the deck

Pakistan need to make the sure the pitch turns otherwise Pakistan will loose most likely.

Some Pakistani reporters and experts were saying for almost a month that this isn't India and Pakistan will prepare fast bowling friendly green surface.
This isn't dust bowl but not a green surface either.

Looks flat. David Warner must be hoping his captain to win the toss.

I don't think it would be spin friendly wicket. Pitch looks harder than usual. There is also rain expected tomorrow which would help pitch contain some moisture for first couple of days. Day 2 & 3 will be cloudy, Day 4 & 5 rainy. Plus, there will also be a strong breeze from left to right during afternoon, which may assist swing bowling.

Don't be pessimistic, Australians are no world beaters on sporting wickets either.

Hopefully the wicket will have decent bounce and carry which helps bowlers and batsmen, then take spin later in game.

I really wanted a green top and overcast conditions. Really disappointed.

Yeah, you will never get that in Pakistan or in SC. Pakistani pitches do offer a bit for pace bowling but green top is no chance. The recently concluded QEA trophy had many matches which ended in draw because the conditions were too hard for bowling.

This is rich coming from the sports channel of a country that is literally known for dishing out roads.

I'm not a pitch expert or anything, but from what I've heard its a traditional Pindi wicket. Runs early on but spin and reverse-swing on-offer in the days ahead.

Pakistan will likely go with a 5 man attack which makes sense if its going to be this kind of a wicket.

Some Pakistani reporters and experts were saying for almost a month that this isn't India and Pakistan will prepare fast bowling friendly green surface.
This isn't dust bowl but not a green surface either.

Looks flat. David Warner must be hoping his captain to win the toss.

Lol, those Pakistani reporters and experts have no idea or knowledge of cricket, In Pakistan some people who have no other job become cricket expert on tv or YouTube. So don't take them seriously.

Considering the pace attacks of both the teams, why would/should Pakistan prepare a 'fast bowling friendly green surface' against Australia?. Don't you think it sounds illogical.

Want to see a good contest between bat and ball. Don't like those wickets where the match is over by the middle of day three cause it's spinning too much.

I have lots of played club cricket in Pindi, but not in this stadium , hard to make dust bowl there. Pindi wickets are true and hard wickets, either bowling friendly or if some grass is left, help pace and swing in first 2 sessions .

Mitch likes the pitch..

Don't think it's the real twitter account of Mitch.

Not sure what to make of it but saw Pat Cummins in nets in a YT video today - and he was getting quite nice of a bounce and a pretty good movement off the pitch.
He beat the batsman a couple of times and got an outside edge too.
Pretty awesome scenes at the Pindi ground.
Looks like it could be a good game.

Finally test cricket back in Pakistan. This should be a cracker of a series, my prediction still stands, Pak takes the test series, Oz takes the ODI :D

Il happily take that prediction. 24 years is along time for a team to have not toured a country.

There were lots of even bouncing sporting wickets in recent times, Dharmshala 2017 india vs aus comes readily to mind- Matthew wade was taking them around his ears - so not all indian wickets are rank turners m8, not that i enjoy rank turners - i despise them in fact but get off the non-sporting wicket high horse?

whilst at it - I guess the myth of 'Big 3 responsible for all thats wrong in cricket' is laid to rest innit? or maybe aus has been replaced by NZ now to form the new big 3?

any ways, am more xcited by this series to watch two top class sides rather than my own india play SL.

Here comes India aalap again for no reason. India has nothing to do with Aus-Pak series. So don't ruin the mood of lot of cricket fan like me who want to watch good cricket between two good sides.

Moreover if you observe properly, every home team plays to its strength. That's why we see spinning surface in India, BD, SL and green mambas in Eng -NZ.

By the way, did you check this post yet?

Watched the video day.

Pat Cummins genuinely looks very, very happy and truly pleased to be part of this, and be in Pakistan.

What a great guy!

I have never seen any Aussie this happy at visiting India.

Matter of fact, many Aussies complained about, gutter and stanchly stink all over the ground during that famous Dean Jone's innings.

Just watch the first minute

Awesome. Less than 16 hours now. Can’t wait. :)

been raining the whole day today since early in the morning...it stopped for a few hrs but clouds have started to gather again.
Even if it does not rain any more tonight, I would be very surprised if play starts on time ie if it is possible at all. Considering the fact that the drainage it the ground is very poor n on top of that other than the square n the bowlers run up the rest of the ground is uncovered.
When considering the fact that it rains quite frequently n pindi/isd n the place where it rains the heaviest is the area where the stadium is n the general vicinity.
So considering the above ie the weather, no matter how barren the wicket is, the soil is such that it will offer decent bounce n pace. N maybe lateral movement under cloudy conditions.

Ohh rain may spoil some fun.
I was expecting a good day of test cricket.
Kohli his 100th test in India and Aus-Pak playing in Pakistan after decades.

See the topic of thread? Stick to it.

By the looks of it, they have tried making a pitch which should turn from day one. So they shaved off the grass some days ago in the hopes of baking it so that it turns

But the prob is that the soil in this region is moist as die to the weather conditions n hence the wicket seldom crumbles in pindi even on day five.....
so for the ball to turn sharply here u either need grass on the wicket or moisture in the wicket for the ball to grip.

So wt they have come up with is a road where once u get in theirs no getting out.....
Unless its overcast n it rains n the wicket is under cover for extended periods.

Yes, this could be a separate wicket and the one they used for practice may have some grass, but boy, look at the bounce and movement he is getting?

I think the clay content in Pindi may have ingredients that support extra bounce, like any additional hard minerals in powdered form?
Who knows? But traditionally, the Pindi pitch hasn't been very bad.

Looking forward for a great game.

Yeah. To me it looks flat.
Pakistan current fast bowling unit is not as experienced as Australian unit of Mitch, Hazelwood & Cummins. So no green surface.

Pakistan also doesn't have spinners like Ashwin Jadeja, Axar, Herath or Taijul etc who can utilise rank turners.

So they've gone with safety first approach and prepared flat deck like UAE. Win the toss, bat long and then hope for pitch to turn from day 3.
Wouldn't be surprised if someone scores double or big hundred.

It's just my assessment and I see nothing wrong with this approach of Pak team.

However I haven't seen many games in Pakistan before so interested to see how it unfolds. Plus forecast conditions may have some impact.

We saw SA and Pak pacers get good bounce out of surface here last time, plus reverse swing played a part so i can see same happening again.

There is grass under neath that pitch... trust me......

Better to just go with one spinner and 3-4 pacers here.

the rain looks like its staying away today. Any local fans who can shed some light on what its like? Having a cloud cover would make it very interesting.

Australian pacers are going to test us on this wicket. The Pakistani pace attack is not to be underestimated either.

Neither is the Australian batting to be over estimated either, they love pace and bounce but struggle in spinning, seaming conditions and against reverse swing.

Should be glorious sunshine for the day. I won't be surprised if it swings upfront though especially given the weather yesterday.

Its a 2 spinner pitch. I would be shocked if there isn't spin on offer provided the match goes to Day 4 or 5. There's going to be a fair bit for the pacers but alot for the spinners too as the match progresses.

Better to go with 3 pacers, 2 spinners than risk going with an all-out pace attack. Especially considering Australians are not the best players of spin.

Beaming sunshine all over Pindi my friend. Plus, rain for the last few days means a cool and slightly chilly atmosphere too. Which means its simply the perfect weather for the first day of a test match.

Less than 45 minutes remaining for the toss.

I am just delighted to see alive grass in the outfield. Too often, Pindi's outfield has given an impression as if Pakistan is located in Sahara.

They have definitely upgraded the stadium little bit, e-g, sitting arrangement, outfield improvement etc.

Bat first, carefully get through first session and then put runs on the board!

After 26 overs, Pakistan are 82/0. Run rate of 3.15.

Anything in this pitch for the bowlers? Or is this a 400+ track?

400+ track, big 1st inns runs and then pitch will reverse and spin later.

My worry is what Australians will do to our bowling. Warner will destroy our bowling

Looks pretty flat at mo

Very little for the bowlers Pak need to bat big and get 500 on this

Its a day 1 pitch, people stop crying and just enjoy the game.

Did Australia get their selection wrong?

Let both teams bat first, recall Imran saying India should find their fast bowlers in Punjab region etc when they gave away 670 runs or something then India replied with 410/1 on that same pitch

Did Australia get their selection wrong?

let both teams bat 1st, also we know pakistani wickets are good for batting early on. Only time you get bowlers assistance is if grass is left on the wicket which was never going to happen here.

Interim coach Andrew McDonald claims Australia's call to play one one spinner in the first Test in Pakistan can't be judged off just one tough day in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan went to stumps at 1-245 on Friday, giving Australia their hardest day in the field in more than three years to start their first tour of Pakistan since 1998.

On a dry wicket that offered nothing for the quicks, Imam-ul-Haq finished on 132no with his first Test century with Azhar Ali also unbeaten on 64.

Australia's bowlers did well to contain, with Pakistan going at just 2.72 an over and the visitors making a point to restrict after being asked to bowl first.

But the question for Australia all day was where a wicket could come from.

While Pakistan went with two spinners plus a spinning allrounder, Nathan Lyon was Australia's only frontline tweaker.

He was bowling by the eighth over, while Travis Head had the ball by the 17th and Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith also had spells.

All that came as Mitchell Swepson and Ashton Agar watched on from over the boundary.

Regardless though, McDonald said it was unfair to judge tactics off one day with the hope the ball will reverse earlier for the quicks as the match goes on.

"I'd like to think that we can judge over five days and not in isolation on one day," McDonald said.

"Clearly it was a tough day for everyone. For all the bowlers, including the spinners.

"There was a little bit of tack in the wicket early, which created the speculation it was going to spin.

"The Travis Head (spell) was more due to the tackiness in the wicket.

"But once that we can dried out, the spin decreased a significant amount and it clearly became tougher for both team's spinners."

McDonald did however admit that he expected slightly more out of the Rawalpindi wicket, which was better suited to quicks in the last on the ground.

Mitchell Starc showed some signs of danger early, unsuccessfully reviewing an lbw shout against Imam-ul-Haq on three as Australia's bowlers made a point of targeting the stumps.

The Pakistan opener remained watchful for parts of his innings, hitting Lyon for two sixes but also willing to soak up balls between a pull shot off Pat Cummins that brought up his 50 and brilliant cover drive from Starc for his hundred.

"I think it's going to be attritional cricket," McDonald said.

"It's still going to be very good for batting over the next couple of days. So it's important for us to be able to contain the runs and the tempo of the game whilst taking some wickets.

"Hopefully we can be batting at some stage tomorrow to even up the game.

"If Pakistan were to bat all day tomorrow then it starts to shift into potentially two results and not three."

pakistans vs Australia 2014 - UAE

1st test day 1 - 219/4 (454 All out) - Won
2nd test day 1 - 304/2 (570/6 Dec) - Won

pakistan vs Australia 2018 - UAE

1st test day 1 - 255/3 (470 All out) - Draw
2nd test day 1 - 282 All out - Won

just highlights importance of a good 1st day but also big runs in 1st inns.

Pak 245/1 (450 to 500 - would be ideal here).

scoreboard pressure is important over 5 days of cricket.

thats wt i had said by looking at the pics of the pitch a day before the match......n how right i was

The Australian bowling was disapointing. We didn't see a plan B or C. It was pretty much the same through out the day. Expected abit more from Starc. We can't judge the pitch until the Australians have batted.

May well be a road. But let’s see after 5 days. Even if the test is drawn, Pakistan now know there is nothing to fear really
