Pitch for the 1st Test between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi

If Azhar Ali , who could not reach in double figures in tests or FC games lately , could score 60 runs here, must be a very very flat wicket. Once Tasleem Arif scored a double ton while facing Lillee on wicket like this at Iqbal stadium Faisalabad. The ordeal provoked Lillee into making the now-famous remark about making his grave on the side of the pitch.

The curator did Pakistan no favors preparing a wicket this flat and lifeless.

Is it a "chief executives wicket" designed to produce the maximum 5 days of revenue? That'd be a mean trick on a public starved of cricket so long. Also counter-productive in the end.

Or did the curator just get it wrong?

Did Babar ask for a road?

im guessing pcb were worried about losing given rawapindi wicket usually supports seamers, but they've gone too far the other way.

What a pathetic pitch!!

If you can't prepare turning pitches and back yourself against Aus, then the team needs a shake up.

Absolutely furious with what has been served up.

spot on

Well done to Australia. This is how great teams play Test cricket. Coming to Pakistan after 2 decades and playing positive good cricket.

And our boys who have played on these wickets whole life wasted alot of time and were only thinking about their own places in the team. If Australia played like them they would have batted the next 2 days as well without losing a wicket.

The approach of both teams shows the difference in mentality.

Any major wear and tear of pitch?
Normally sub continental pitches becomes suitable for spin after 2-3 days

There is no pitch on which Pakistan has a significant advantage over Australia. That's the real truth. Pakistan haven't played on rank turners in ages and they won't survive on fast, bouncy, seaming tracks either.

Pakistan lost Hasan Ali and Faheem Klusener just before start of this test.
Given the circumstances, defensive approach was better, as you can not afford to lose first test at home. Our batters did ok job, rr of 2.93 is not bad.
Pakistan will certainly up the tempo in Karachi Test. If Aus is scoring ar run rate of 3.75 then that is their tactic. We should follow our own pattern and strength. RR of 2.75-3.00 suits tempo of our batsmen, no need to pressurize them
To score quickly. Playing wrong shots they will get out.

I suppose it's going to take a few years before Pakistan looks to copy the Indian template of pitchmaking for easy wins over the Western teams.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now because they haven't consistently played at home for a decade or so. But this deck will take them nowhere.

They have bossed Aus in Uae on slow turner's should have been the MO here aswell I think the curator just got it horribly wrong

Certainly seems to be a placid highway, not much in it for the bowlers at all.

I don’t think Pakistan can win this one.

The contest is likely heading for a draw unless Australia can get a lead and do something special on the last day.

Pakistan needs to be docked ICC points for preparing a pitch like this. They know what the rules are.

Just goes to show the innings played by Azhar Ali and Imam were nothing worthy of mention.

Usually known as a back-breaker.

The sort of pitch that makes pace-bowlers claim they are injured shortly before the start of a match.

I can understand Pakistan wanting to negate the threat of the Aussie bowlers but this surface is pathetic.

Will it break up in the last 2 days? I doubt it.

So so disappointed by this pitch. Don't know if it has happened by accident or by design but it is an abysmal pitch for test cricket. So excited to see Australia in Pakistan with a full strength squad after 24 years, hoping for a hard fought and entertaining series and instead we have a bore fest because the pitch is so completely lifeless.

How and why has this happened? Someone in the PCB needs to answer this question and someone needs to be held accountable.

Have a look at the last few test matches in Pakistan:

V South Africa

1st Test: 220 all out, 378 all out, 245 all out, 90 for 3
2nd Test: 272 all out, 201 all out, 298 all out, 274 all out

V Bangladesh

Test: 233 all out, 445 all out, 168 all out

V Sri Lanka

1st Test: 308 for 6, 252 for 2
2nd Test: 191 all out, 271 all out, 555 for 3, 212 all out

So you can see that the pitches have offered something - spinners have got wickets, fast bowlers have got wickets, batsman have scored runs. Why not just continue with the same formula? The Rawalpindi wicket in particular has been excellent until this game.

Was it that PCB got scared when we lost Hasan, Faheem, Haris and decided to make a road? Is it just incompetence? So so so so so so disappointing.

I saw khwajjas interview afterwards..he thinks it will break up but thats just mind games no way is this going to break up

I would be very surprised if there is a result in this match. It would take some ridiculous batting for that to happen.

Worse than UAE pitches. Atleast UAE pitches had something in it for the spinners and would start becoming helpful for bowlers in last 2 days. This pitch is a road.

To Pakistan this pitch suits them Aussie attack is hands down better than Pakistans which is toothless so a flat wicket suits them also toss was crucial had Australia won the toss they would had scored 650 in 2 days and Pakistan likely to crumble under scoreboard pressure

Pitch is irrelevant here so is declaration, tomorrow looking at the weather forecast i think atleast 30-40 overs will be lost. Max Aus can do is match Pakistan score tomorrow.

Not a bad strategy to start defensively after losing hasan and faheem. Pak will get back stronger in 2nd test. Just like 2015 uae test series v england.

I just hope they make a sporting wicket for next 2 matches. What a horrendous advertisement for test cricket.

If anyone remembers India vs pak in 2005. We made dead wickets for first 2 tests and then last test in Karachi was a sporting wicket

6 wickets in 3 days of cricket here.

The cherry on top, Pakistan was batting 2 runs per over despite being 300/2. Losing only 4 wickets before the declaration, but not wanting to score faster, lol.

Waiting for a lecture about its not being T20. Guys/Gals, I hardly watch any T20. I have no issue with slow batting if required. In fact, Pakistan batting slow first day was not an issue at all, but why on the earth you will only lose 4 wickets and declare with such slow batting. Adding 70 more runs and losing 9 wickets would have been far better. May not have made any difference in the result, but play cricket with the right attitude.

What a pitch for a historic match and what an approach to play cricket.

I will probably just follow scorecards in this series. Killed the fun here.

It was confusing and poor thought through. Hopefully Babar will learn very quickly

Really poor pitch. Arguably even worse than the occasional rank minefields out there which produce 2.5 day Tests. At least things happen in those matches and they are entertaining in a sense. Whereas the batters could play on this road of a surface for 7 or 8 days let alone 5 and there still might not be a definitive result.

Someone made the call. I don’t think it was just Babar who asked for a dead track. I am guessing the team management was involved. I hope Ramiz takes a look into this.

Wonder whose idea it was to produce a pitch flatter than a pancake. Mindless draw on the cards unless Pakistan does something terribly mercurial true to their reputation & crumble in a heap.

My experience of playing club cricket at pindi stadium suggests pitch really gets damped & ball do not come onto bat at all after long spell of rain. Scoring 100 in 25 overs match becomes a huge challenge. I hope (against all odds) that ground staff is following the same procedures they follow for club cricket during rain.

It's not at the level where RR needs to be micro managing this but it was ill thought through. Ultimately, it's Babar decision and he needs to learn from it.

No one is going to lecture you. It's a poor pitch. We've seen both teams on it now. As roady as the roadiest road ever served up. It'll get a "poor" rating and rightly so.

Nothing against Pakistan, any country can & has served up a poor pitch or two. But they should be rated as such & acted against if it is repeated. A shame for the fans.

Almost zero chance of any play today. It started raining around 5 yesterday and never stopped the whole night. Would be very surprised if we there's any play possible today

So basically not even 1 session of even 35-40 overs possible today ?

If that is the case, no need to bowl shaheen tomorrow, to keep his energy level up for 2nd test.

I think Pakistan made this pitch out of desperation. We neither have good fast bowlers nor proper spinners. The way Australia thrashed England Pak management doesn't want to be whitewashed in the home ground. I think if we go for sporting pitches next 2 matches it will be 2-0 for Australia. Bit knowing Pakistan it may be third match pitch will favour the bowler. Loss of 1-0 is better than 3-0.

At least this test will be draw then. If Australia takes 230 lead it will all over for us in the 5th day.

RIP test cricket in Pakistan
Cause of death : Rawalpindi pitch
Culprits : Captain and coach.

Spectators money should be refunded , they did not pay to see this torture.

I don't think Saqlain has any say. This guy is just a yes man and there to show of his face a coach.

Maybe they made a flat track due to Hasan and Faheem injuries.

Hasan had a decent performance in test last time, what Faheem has to do with it, his role has been just to give bowlers some rest but he usually ends up giving the batsmen some much needed rest from regular bowlers. Faheem is just a useless bowler.

Pakistan is doing absolutely perfect. They were smart enough to understand their limitations.
I will advocate another road in Karachi. With Hasan Ali and Faheem back, possibly Yasir Shah as well, Pakistan can take a chance in 3rd Test.
Secondly our batters also have 1st hand experience of Aussie bowling attack now. And our team knows weak links in bowling armoury.
However still i would not want supporting wicket in Karachi test.
By 3rd Test we will be in much better position to compete. It is similar to 2006 Test series v India which we did win 1-0 in the end.

This is the beauty of Test cricket. It is chess game. I do not know why people really want supporting wickets. On helpful wickets our top order will be reduced to nothing. Our RR was 2.93, before start of our batting i anticipate 2.75 RR so we batted not as slowly as it is suggested. Ultimate aim is to win test series.
In football terms we need to park the bus jose mourinho style and get a goal on counter and defend deep. Like Greece did in Euro 2004 final.

Perfect, and let the test cricket suffer early death , --------------and to hell with millions of cricket fans who were waiting for this series so anxiously , keep torturing them, why not.

Do we have Zaheer Abbas in our team ? Or Majid Khan, who scored a century before lunch in 1976, 1st player to do it in 46 years ( on day 1 of test).

Do we have Muhammad Yusuf or Inzi/Ijaz/Anwars in our team or even Younus Khan.

We have very limited batting line up + significantly weak bowling attack. We are facing World no 1 team who just beat Eng 4-0 in Ashes. How can supportive wickets be given ?

Our Test team is not Barcelona of Pep Guardiola. What our team has done is brilliant. Series is 0-0 and all to play for in Karachi. It is not death of test cricket. 2.93 RR is average. It is not as low as it is projected.

So basically not even 1 session of even 35-40 overs possible today ?

If that is the case, no need to bowl shaheen tomorrow, to keep his energy level up for 2nd test.

The drainage system at pindi stadium is very bad. Last time when Pakistan hosted SL for test at Pindi Stadium in Dec-19 only play of 6-8 sessions were completed in whole test match, 3 sessions on 1st day, 1 on 4th day & 3 on 5th day.

Thanks for the update.

Start of play has been delayed due to wet outfield. Inspection at 10:30 AM. (PST)

Pitches like this is why test cricket is dying a slow, agonizing death. Nobody has time for 5 day time Tuk marathon in 2022. If PCB doesn't change, there won't be a single spectator watching test matches at stadiums in Pakistan by next year.

Well i am a positive thinker so i am definitely thinking that these last two days will be full of entertainment.
Cant say about Draw or win but match will be interesting (barring rain).
Even you wont believe me i am still thinking that there are 60% chances one of the team is winning.

The wickets for the South African series last year were top draw and the cricket was enthralling with a brilliant balance between bat and ball. So what changed in a year's time?

My guess is that pakistani team management asked the curator for a slow UAE like turner (fearing the aussie pace trio) but instead it ended up being an absolute flatbed. Just hope we see (much) better wickets in the next two tests.

I don't think anyone makes a pitch like this on purpose. It's just that a directive moves the error into really bad places where a curator on their own just left to make the best pitch they can, usually does better.

Curators in some places really do have the power to tell intrusive captains or boards to go jump.

Will rain make any changes?
Either speed up or cracking?
Both case advantages Pakistan otherwise dull 5 day draw

The sad thing is that Pakistan did not back their strengths by preparing a pitch that played to their pacers. Probably because they were scared of what Australia's pacers could do on the same pitches.

But honestly you can't have this kind of a cowardly approach. South Africa had great pacers too. Didn't stop us from blanking them 2-0. And it was the pacers who did all the heavy-lifting in that series.

Even in this test match, Pakistan's pacers have bowled better than Australia's pacers. But no matter how well they bowl there's no help in the pitch for them.

265 overs, almost 850 runs, 8 wickets.

Utterly and completely abysmal cricket. This must not happen again.

I think ICC will rate this pitch as Poor. There is no contest between the bat and ball so far. Rawalpindi stadium may even get a demerit point.

This series was hyped up and really built up. Has been nothing more than disappointing. We as fans should raise this with the PCB. I would rather have seen Pakistan lose and then fight during a close contested match. Instead of this boring garbage. The truth is with a disappointing track test cricket has lost. Cricket in Pakistan has lost. Imagine if this was a close contested game could’ve been the best series of the year. Would have made other teams want to come and play for exciting games .

All is not lost. There are still 2 games to go.

Agreed. Am hoping this was just a mistake. Given we have had relatively decent pitches in Pakistan since test cricket returned i can give the benefit of doubt but we cannot have a repeat in Karachi.

The series was hyped up because Australia was coming to Pakistan for the first time in 24 years and this series was seen as the key moment where cricket in Pakistan will be fully established.

Australia has always been the most reluctant team to play in Pakistan and the belief is that a successful tour of Australia would ensure that no team pulls out in the future.

The level of hype increased after New Zealand and England backed out and this series became even more pivotal.

So the hype has nothing to do with the quality of cricket and what the outcome would be. PCB should demand better pitches in the remaining games but this series will be a success from Pakistan’s perspective only if it goes smoothly and the Australians do not raise any questions over the security measures.

I find it funny how people think Pakistan is scared of Australia and not preparing good wickets because of that. No Australian batsman has been good enough to score a century on a pitch where Imam and Azhar looked near impossible to get out by their much famed bowling attack. Australia is a rubbish test team in the subcontinent, so keep that in mind before spouting nonsense like that.

It’s clear the curator messed up and ended up serving a flat road, which he expected to break up by the 4th day. It happens, the last two games on this very ground have been more than decent.

There could be an ICC sanction including demerit points for this pitch.

An extreme misfire.

A test match pitch should help take 40 wickets or atleast 20 wickets from a side to give a result..

This pitch just at the end of 4th day was able to cross 10 wickets. :asif

Steve Smith speaking to the press about the pitch:

"Its pretty benign (pitch) and there's not a great deal of pace and bounce in it for the seamers, that's for sure but I think spinners have got a little bit out of it; When you hit the right spot (as a spinner) there has been a little bit of natural variation and you get it out wide into the rough, I think there is a little bit there too; I thought it would break up a bit and turn a little more than the start of the game but it hasn't done so... yeah, a pretty benign dead wicket"

Furthermore, reports suggest that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has instructed the pitch curators to prepare a lively pitch to make Karachi Test consequential.

https://a-sports.tv/preparations-full-swing-national-stadium-second-test/

we need surfaces like we got at rawalpindi for SA test, you want something where its good to bat on early and has pace in for quicks, then allows reverse swing and turn later.

what you dont want is like the jeet lo dil series where is green early on, as then team bowling 1st gets a juicy wicket and then it dies there after.

Dissappointed that we took a cautious approach in pitch prep and batting. But I am confident that atleast the pitch prep will change next test. We will always be cautious/attritional in batting so that wont change.

This is the reason why Amir the spineless coward retired, he didn’t want to bend his back on these wickets. He is sitting pretty at home now isn’t he? the quitter don’t want this work.

Guys like Wahab Riaz or even Asif would have killed to be in his position and would be more up for bowling on these wickets.

But Lord Mohammad ‘easy paisa’ Amir is cricketing royalty and the best thing since Jesus walked on water, he shouldn’t have to take cricket as a sport very seriously. Varun

He had ability but you need more then that in international sport, you need a big pair on you and this guy has always been a shady guy looking for that easy pay day. Once greed got to him he forgot all about the grind

This pitch is completely pathetic. I sincerely hope the match referee gives it a poor rating. There is so little contest between bat and ball that it’s not even funny. Cummins and Shaheen, arguably two of the best bowlers in World Cricket, have been neutralised to the point where they are totally ineffective.

This is not the normal Pindi wicket. We saw what a good Pindi wicket looks like in the last test match against SA here. What has possessed the curators to make such a rubbish wicket here?

This match is enough to put even passionate fans to sleep. Poor stuff from the PCB and ground staff. There should be repercussions stemming from the shambles we have all witnessed.
