A Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-661 'went missing' on the way to Islamabad from Chitral on Wednesday.

There are more than 40 passengers on board the plane. Singer-cum-evangelist Junaid Jamshed was allegedly on board the plane, according to media reports.

Army troops and army helicopters have been mobilised to a site near Havelian, Inter-Services Public Relations said.

District Police Officer Abbottabad relayed reports of a plane crashing near Havelian to DawnNews.

"PIA's ATR-42 aircraft operating as PK-661, carrying around 40 persons lost its contact with the control tower on its way from Chitral to Islamabad a short while ago," PIA Spokesman Daniyal Gilani tweeted. "All resources are being mobilised to locate the aircraft."

The flight departed from Chitral around 3:30pm and was expected to land at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport at around 4:40pm.

Junaid Jamshed and his family was also in the plane :(

Not that their lives matter more than others but it always hits you lot more when someone like Junaid jamshed who we have grown up watching (from Dil dil Pakistan days), it feels as devastating as Amjad Sabri's death a few months ago and i remember how Junaid Jamshed himself reacted to that. Hoping for some miracle :(

it would be incredible big loss if we lose Junaid Jamshed. Really sad to hear this.

Absolutely gutting.
TalentSpotterPk, the domestic planes in Pakistan are absolute trash as they know noone would really pull them up on it.

Someone tweeted only Junaid Jamshed decided to return from Jamaat, while others from Tableeghi Jamaat stayed in Chitral including Saeed Anwar.

Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilaihi Rajioon.

May Allah have mercy on the souls of all the passengers.Junaid, along with his wife and sons were also on the plane.

This is extremely sad news. I came to know of JJ from here and it's depressing hearing this news.

RIP to all the unfortunate victims aboard that flight. This year has seen us lose so many personalities all over the world.

Hoping and Praying for a Moujza :'(

Was it really fortune ? Or Terrible PIA ?

I heard on news that engineers warned the authorities that plane was not fit to fly but they still went ahead :((

Such a terrible feeling, extremely sad for all the families, RIP :(

Some channels are already confirming JJ is no more :(

This is such sad news.

Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un

Prayers go out to the families and all those affected. If JJ was on board and is no longer with us - today Pakistan has lost another icon of the country

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi raji'oon. So soo sad. PIA is the worst airline on the face of the planet. It needs to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. This is the result of unabated corruption.

Truly gutted today..

Very sad news. Does not sound good at all.

Thoughts are with the families who have/may have lost loved ones.

A plane was burning in the air before it plummeted into the ground after take-off in Pakistan, according to witnesses.

The plane went missing after take-off in the country's north with around 47 people on board.

Pakistani TV channels reported the plane took off from the city of Chitral but lost contact with ground control shortly afterwards.

The aircraft, operated by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) then crashed in the north-west.

Witnesses have described seeing burning bodies as authorities reveal they do not expect to find survivors from flight PK-661.

Taj Muhammad Khan, a government official based in the Havelian region, told Reuters: "All of the bodies are burned beyond recognition.

"The debris is scattered."

Mr Khan, who was at the site of the crash, added that witnesses told him "the aircraft has crashed in a mountainous area, and before it hit the ground it was on fire".

Laiq Shah, a senior police official in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province told Reuters by telephone that the plane had crashed in that region, near the town of Havelian.

He said rescue personnel were en route to the scene.

It is believed Pakistani pop-star Junaid Jamshed may be among the dead.

The singer turned Evangelical cleric is rumoured to have been on the flight.

Forty of those on board were passengers and seven believed to be crew.

Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilaihi Rajioon. I had the pleasure of meeting Junaid just a few months ago here in Canada. A very nice, pious man.

Truly an amazing life did JJ live. Became famous as a pop-singer and died in the path of Allah, SubhanAllah. He will be rewarded in the Akhira, InshAllah.

Awfully sad incident this. May Allah ta'ala bless all the deceased and grant patience to their families.

That's very sad.

Bit silly to blame PIA though given we don't know the full details of the crash and no investigation has been carried out yet.

Heads need to roll within the PIA. These incidents keep on happening and nothing comes off it.

Flight engineers had specifically informed the authorities that the plane is not fit to fly, but the PIA management wanted to stick to the schedule.

Just shocked and sad, of course knowing JJ was on the flight makes it sadder as he was the guy behind the Dil Dil Pakistani song.

RIP to all those that have perished.

Wow, if that's true then this is disgraceful. The management should be charged with manslaughter.

Nothing is going to happen another typical pakistani inquiry without any result and thn people will forget about it until something happen again.

I have no words to describe how I feel right now............My Childhood, the memories, everything............

JJ was an inspiration to all of us, of one man who left everything to pursue a spiritual life path and was probably one of the few gems remaining in Pakistan. :( :( :( I am just so so so sad right now !!

Inna lillah e waina illah e rajayoon

I believe the aircraft is an ATR-42. PIA have had them in their fleet since around the turn of the century.

RIP to everyone on board.

RIP
A big tragedy, this one. May God give courage to affected families to deal with this difficult time.

The sheer lack of concern for human life is so shocking in the subcontinent ..
The Plane crash now. The train accident in India a few weeks back that over a 100 died. We just see the news of double digit death tolls, complain to whoever stands nearby and the very next day its business as usual. !
Just because there are too many people here doesn't mean we just watch them die-off like that ... You get that attitue from many people. "No one I know died, so...."
Concerned authorities are never held responsible for the failings.

All 47 people on board a PIA plane, including popular pop singer-turned-Islamic preacher Junaid Jamshed and two foreigners, were feared dead as their Islamabad-bound flight crashed in a hilly area near Pakistan's garrison town of Abbottabad.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane PK-661 with 47 people, including Jamshed, his wife and Deputy Commissioner Chitral Osama Warraich, on board crashed in Patola village near Pakistan Ordinance Factory, Havelian, while en route to Islamabad from Chitral in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. The national carrier's flight departed from Chitral around 3:30 PM and was expected to land at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport at around 4:40 PM. A PIA spokesman confirmed that the pilot of the ill-fated plane had given a 'mayday' distress call to traffic control before it went off the radar.

"The ATR aircraft flight had 42 passengers, including nine women and two infants, along with two air hostesses and three pilots,"
he said. Of those on board, at least two were foreigners. "The debris of the plane has been found. So far there is no indication of anyone's survival," an official said. Though officially there was no information on the cause of the crash, Aviation Herald, that reports daily about incidents and critical situations in civil aviation, said the plane had "engine problems".

The daily citing local government sources said chances to find survivors are "bleak". Jamshed's brother told the media that his brother and his wife and other members of a 'Tableegi' (religious preaching) group were on the flight while returning from a religious tour to Chitral. Pakistan's former cricket captain Saeed Anwar had a narrow escape with a family member saying he was due to return on the flight but did not board it and stayed back in Chitral. Army troops and helicopters have been mobilised to the site of the crash, Inter-Services Public Relations said.

Abid Ali, a senior official of the national disaster and management cell, said rescue work had already started at the crash site and six helicopters were being used in the operation but it would take time to recover the debris and any bodies as the crash took place in a mountainous region.

The flight initially left from Peshawar for Chitral and was returning to Islamabad from there before it went off the radar. Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying by media reports that they had seen a plane crash in a hilly area near Havelian. Clouds of smoke could be seen rising from the area of the reported crash. "PIA's ATR-42 aircraft operating as PK-661, carrying around 40 persons lost its contact with the control tower on its way from Chitral to Islamabad a short while ago," PIA Spokesman Daniyal Gilani had earlier tweeted.

"All resources are being mobilised to locate the aircraft." Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed all authorities "to immediately reach the site and start rescue and relief operations"
, a statement said. Pakistan has had a poor air safety track record in recent years.

In 2012, a Bhoja Airline plane, a Boeing 737 carrying 121 passengers and six crew members, crashed near Islamabad just before touchdown. The worst aviation tragedy on Pakistani soil came in July 2010 when an Airbus 321 passenger jet operated by the private airline Airblue crashed into hills overlooking Islamabad. The flight was coming from Karachi. All 152 people on board were killed in the accident, which occurred amid heavy rain and poor visibility.

Another deadly civilian plane crash involving a Pakistani jet occured in 1992 when a PIA Airbus A300 crashed into a cloud-covered hillside on its approach to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, killing 167 people.

Cruelly all major air disasters in the last decade have happened when planes have been approaching Islamabad for landing.

Those familiar with the area know that Islamabad and it's hilly terrain and rainy/foggy weather isn't very conducive for flights specially the old and ill-equipped aircraft that our airlines operate.

Devastated. My generation practically grew up with JJ's voice in the background, and the trajectory of his life so often mirrored ours in so many ways. RIP.

Terrifying, the loss of lives. May Allah swt grant them all The highest rank in Jannat Al Firdous and make it easy for their immediate families. What a sad day in our history. Heads Defo need to roll after this, a proper investigation must follow and the root cause must be determined!!

Looks like there are 3 or 4 foreigners from the list, names sound chinese and german. It's a good thing that Saeed didn't travel in that flight, otherwise we would've lost another icon of our childhood.

PIA flight PK-661 crashes enroute to Islamabad, no survivors

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-661 carrying 47 passengers and crew crashed on the way to Islamabad from Chitral on Wednesday at 4:42pm PST. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed there are no survivors from the ill-fated flight.

Thirty six bodies have been recovered from the wreckage.

PIA Spokesman Daniyal Gilani said there were 42 passengers, five crew members and one ground engineer on board.

The passenger list confirmed there were 31 men, 9 women and 2 infants on board the flight, including singer-cum-evangelist Junaid Jamshed and his family, as well as three foreigners.

The ATR-42 aircraft departed from Chitral around 3:30pm and was expected to land at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport at around 4:40pm but crashed in Havelian near Abbottabad shortly after a distress call was sent to the control tower.

PIA's emergency response center can be contacted at 0092-21-99044890, 0092-21-99044376 and 0092-21-99044394.

Devastating news, thoughts go out to those who have lost their loved ones. RIP.

Not only do PIA make use of ancient aircraft, they do not maintain them either so every now and then such unfortunate disasters are predictable; I blame the dreaded airline.
