Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2nd XI (2019/20) | Discussion Thread

Thanks ! You definitely see a drop off in quality here especially in terms of batting.

Majority of these guys are mediocre yet were in our First Class system for years. Now they've been filtered out so the standards of QEA Trophy will improve significantly.

Faizan, Akhlaq, Khalid and Zulfiqar star on day one of three-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Lahore, 14 September 2019:

Faizan Riaz, Mohammad Akhlaq, Khalid Usman and Zulfiqar Babar stole the limelight on day one of the three-day non-first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches on Saturday.

Batting at No.4 for Northern, Faizan stroked a punishing 156 not out to help his side to 282 for eight against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Rawalpindi, while opener Akhlaq scored 135 for Central Punjab and Southern Punjab’s left-arm spinner and mentor Zulfiqar Babar took five for 103 in Faisalabad as the former was dismissed for 253.

In Karachi, Balochistan were skittled out for 183 against Sindh with Hasan Khan finishing as the pick of the bowlers with four for 34. The only notable run-getter for Balochistan was Awais Zia who scored 71 with eight fours.

In Rawalpindi, Faizan single-handedly put Northern in commanding position. Coming out to bat at the score of 48 for two, Faizan hit 20 fours in a 190-ball innings.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s left-arm spinner Khalid Usman was the destroyer-in-chief when he recorded impressive figures of 24-5-70-5.

When stumps were drawn for the day, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 26 for no loss with Mohammad Nadeem batting on 19 and Samiullah seven not out.

Akhlaq hit 11 fours and two sixes in a 210-ball innings as Central Punjab slipped from 159 for two to 253 all-out against Southern Punjab. Ali Zaryab (38) and Irfan Khan Niazi (34) were the other two batsmen who batted with some confidence and authority.

Veteran spinner Zulfiqar Babar spearheaded Southern Punjab’s fightback with figures of 36-6-103-5. He received good support from Agha Salman Ali, who claimed three wickets for 45 runs.

Southern Punjab will resume their first innings on Sunday at four for no loss.

If this remains constant for the whole season then it will be a flop season because we aren't try to find talent for Pakistan retirees(old age) cricket team .

How does Sohail Tanvir get to play FC when he has played 8 FC in 4 years?

They will be replaced by youngsters as they are failing.

Omair Yousuf is officially with the 1st XI. However, he wasn't named as one of the 16 for this match and is unlikely to play given how strong Sindh's opening partnership is. That being the case, It follows he should have at least played 2nd XI rather than warmed the bench.

Sorry to say 2nd XI of all teams in other part is meant for development of youngsters. You should only play 4 to 5 players over U23 in the playing 11.

If seniors are occuping 1st XI and 2nd Xi then it is unfair and wastage of money being spent on 2nd XI.

Even cricinfo has written an article where they have criticized that what the PCB is paying to the players under the new domestic structure pales in comparison to department cricket and even talked about free air travel, free medical insurance provided by departments to the players, their family members

My question is if the players were indeed being looked after so well by the departments, why didn't they make full use of the resources available to them to develop their batting, bowling, fielding skills to a world class level? Why did we have pot bellies like Saad Altaf in domestic cricket then?

Guys anyone know more about ahmed SAfi Abdullah ? Is he a pacer or spinner ? Also how old is he

Lahore, 15 September 2019:

Raza Hasan and Ahmed Safi Abdullah claimed seven wickets apiece on the second day of the three-day non-first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches on Sunday.

Northern’s Raza recorded figures of 26.2-10-55-7 to spin out Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for 246 at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi. After securing a slender 36-run first innings lead, Northern finished the penultimate day at 17 for two.

The star for Khyber Pakthunkhwa was opener Mohammad Naeem Senior, who showed a lot of determination and fight while scoring 108. His 177-ball innings included 16 fours. He added 108 runs for the second wicket with Mehran Ibrahim (47) before Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost their last eight wickets for 99 runs.

Ahmed Safi Abdullah was the man to watch-out for at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, where he registered figures of 31.4-8-77-7 that helped Central Punjab to dismiss Southern Punjab for 173 and grab a 80-run first innings lead. By the draw of stumps, Southern Punjab had extended their advantage to 105 runs by reaching 25 for the loss of two wickets.

For Southern Punjab, Naved Yasin was the top scorer with 57, while No.9 batsman Zulfiqar Babar (20) and No.10 batsman Zia-ul-Haq (19) batted their side to some respectable total, which, at one stage, looked difficult after they had slipped to 139 for eight.

At the NBP Stadium, in Karachi, Sindh took a first innings lead of 52 runs against Balochistan when they scored 235 all-out in response to the visitors’ 183.

When play ended, Balochistan had reached 82 for two to lead by 30 runs with eight wickets standing.

For Sindh, wicketkeeper Saifullah Bangash was the top-scorer with 72 not out (106 balls, 10x4), while Rameez Raja Junior contributed 48.

Wickets were evenly shared between Balochistan bowlers, including Jalat Khan (three for 52), Shahzad Tareen (two for 26), Nazar Hussain (two for 41) and Gohar Faiz (two for 63)

Scores in brief:

Northern v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, KRL Stadium, Rawalpindi

Northern 282-8 dec, 83 overs (Faizan Riaz 156 not out, Jamal Anwar 41, Umair Khan 31; Khalid Usman 5-70) and 17-2

Central Punjab v Southern Punjab, Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad

Central Punjab 253 all out, 83 overs (Mohammad Akhlaq 135, Ali Zaryab 38, Mohammad Irfan Khan 34; Zulfiqar Babar 5-103, Salman Ali Agha 3-45) and 25-2

Sindh v Balochistan, NBP Sports Complex, Karachi

Balochistan 183 all out, 70.1 overs (Awais Zia 71, Nazar Hussain 21, Ramiz Raja jnr 20; Hassan Khan 4-34, Danish Aziz 2-40) and 82-2 (Akbar-ur-Rehman 27 not out, Awais Zia 25, Taimur Ali 23 not out)

Sindh 235 all-out, 72.5 overs (Saifullah Bangash 72 not out, Rameez Raja Jnr 48, Mohammad Waqas Jnr 23; Jalat Khan 3-52, Shahzad Tareen 2-26, Nazar Hussain 2-41, Gohar Faiz 2-63)

At the end of the season,PCB should look st the performance of all oldies from first and second XIs and those whose batting and bowling averages are not up to mark should be let go.Same procedure should apply in next season. After a few sessons the dead wood will be replaced by new promising players.

For the first XI, I think if the teams are gonna rotate their main seamers they would not want their main seamers playing for 2nd team as there is a high chance Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Ilyas and Bashir are gonna get games, so them playing 2nd xi will only tire them up before playing for the main team. You can even add Ali Shafiq to that list.

For the 2nd XI I agree that some exclusions are definitely pretty surprising and hopefully they will get games going forward especially.

This is abysmal. Arshad Iqbal not even in 2nd XI

While I rate Arshad Iqbal as a bowler but Ahmed Jamal, Ifranullah Shah and Azizullah playing for KP 2nd Xi are pretty impressive bowlers as well with decent pace and their FC records speak for themselves. Arshad Iqbal will get games going forward.

Watching the highlights Irfanullah makes Sadaf Hussain look quick, and that's saying something. Apparently he was involved in some sort of accident a few years ago, and obviously isn't the same bowler he once was. Azizullah has also lost pace.

How on earth has he managed that? Is the PCB asleep?

Could be that he is part of the 2nd team and terms might be different for him as every other Pakistani player except Malik and Hafeez are back

Irfanullah was never too pacy but last time I watched he was generating enough pace to trouble from good length but didnt know about the unfortunate accident. For Azizullah it has also been some time I watched him but he has definitely maintained an impressive record in FC since then with avg of 19 and around 180 wickets. Both of them just like Ahmed Jamal are pretty tall as well especially Irfanuallah as if I am not wrong he is around 6 ft 4 or 5. Jamal is 31 but other two are 24 and 26 however, Arshad Iqbal is obviously younger and with more potential at the moment but I wont be too critical starting with the trio of Jamal, Irfan and Aziz as well. At the same time I do hope to see Arshad Iqbal getting regular games.

Don't read too much into FC bowling records. State of pitches in previous seasons make them unreliable.

AHMED SAFI ABDULLAH took 7 wickets and 2 wickets in 1st and 2nd innings respectively

He is only 21 year old(slow left arm orthodox)

While I rate Arshad Iqbal as a bowler but Ahmed Jamal, Ifranullah Shah and Azizullah playing for KP 2nd Xi are pretty impressive bowlers as well with decent pace and their FC records speak for themselves. Arshad Iqbal will get games going forward.

All three are inferior than Arshad.

What’s the point of three day games? Hard to get a result out of these... should at least be four day games.

All county games in England before were three day games. These games used to produce results because the pitches were not dead.England copied Australian Sheffield Shield and changed to four day county games.

Awais Zia fined for PCB Code of Conduct breach

Lahore, 21 September 2019:

Balochistan opener Awais Zia has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for a level 2 offence relating to personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during his side’s three-day non first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Southern Punjab at the Dring Stadium in Bahawalpur.

The incident happened on Friday, the first day of the match, when Awais used inappropriate language against his batting partner Shehzad Tareen while returning to the dressing room after a mix-up led to his run-out.

Awais was charged by on-field umpires Imtiaz Iqbal and Abdul Moqeet at the end of first day’s play for violating article 2.13 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel.

On Saturday, Awais pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Mohammad Javed Malik.

Guys asked this before but no one answered,
Are pitches really bad or is the batting?

Scores are pathetic

At the end of the season PCB should review the performance of all youngsters(batters and bowlers) and those who perform well should be promoted to furst XIs in next season. We need tall young fast bowlers. There are too many trundlers in first XIs who need to be shown the door.

Khushdil Shah has failed again. Needs to score lots of runs to get into Pak team. He has a good limited overs record but not a great red ball record.

At least with the new domestic structure everyone has a clear path to get into Pakistan team.

First of all Khushdil Shah needs to get into the main FC team by scoring runs.

I would of definitely picked up but for the t20 and one day team. We need someone explosive st number 6

I think its desperation really. We have been desperate for an explosive batsman. Every time someone scores at run a ball in a couple of innings section of desperate fans get excited.

Thats why its so important to have a really strong domestic set-up. Cant just put anyone in the team and drop them after 10 games this brings inconsistency to the selection and confuses teams combination and thinking.
