Rahul Dravid to exit as India's head coach, Jay Shah's big new coach plan revelation [Post Updated #181]

Hold on, not so fast.
You are too slow.

To summarise your opinion:

When India win a series from 36 all out it is not only under Shastri's tenure, but Shastri should be credited for the way India played through out the series.

When India are on top form in a WC with 10/10 wins, it is the players that should be credited, and not the Coach, Dravid.

Before you talk about speed, concentrate on direction.

As always you are all over the place and losing it completely when I have proven you wrong. You have written this long post just so you can hide behind it.

Where did I say that he changed his technique? I just said that in order to give that suggestion, a coach must understand the flaws in their technique and find a workaround based on that.

and of course the adjustment has to be minor.

You are forgetting that we were discussing Shastri and how he was just a motivator and not a coach. Not capable of thinking at the level Dravid can technically. The reason why India decided to get rid of him and brought Dravid as their new coach.

Besides, young players always go to their coach and ask if they can make some minor adjustments in their technique if possible. A coach would asses and tell them if it is possible or not and give them a plan to work on whenever they get a break.

A coach of any international team is not just a coach when a series or a tournament is going on. He is a coach in the off season too where he must work with them and bring whatever improvement he can to improve their game.

A motivator like Shastri would not be able to do all of the above because he is just a motivator and not exactly a coach.
You have mastered the art of writing a lot but saying nothing. Dravid’s accomplishments as coach doesn’t even compare to Shastri’s. He is merely capitalizing on the work that Shastri did.

Shastri, in conjunction with Kohli, helped India build the most successful Asian Test team of all time including winning two Test series wins in Australia one of which came with a side that was heavily depleted with injuries.

Shastri was the perfect coach for this Indian team. Dravid is a better for the junior sides and India would be making a mistake by going after VVS who will be another Dravid.

Forget Shastri, forget Dravid.

I say it again:

After India were shot for 36 and Kohli left, you claimed that India would get whitewashed without Kohli.

Now since that prediction blew in your face, you are claiming that India won because Kohli left.

So were you clueless back then or are you clueless now?

Why? Because your duplicity has been exposed yet again?
After India were shot for 36 and Kohli left, you claimed that India would get whitewashed without Kohli.

I could coach Ind and i wouldn't add or detract anything. They have excellent players who play against other good players pretty much all year round. This makes them battled hardened and chaff is sidelined quickly.

After India were shot for 36 and Kohli left, you claimed that India would get whitewashed without Kohli.

So I claimed India would get whitewashed without Kohli.

You claimed England or India would win the WC.

What’s your point?

Not sure what you are going on about. You said you just need a motivator at that level and I successfully proved that this is not the case. You have to be bonkers to suggest that a coach at an international level just have to be a motivator. This is a joke of a comment. I always knew that you know nothing about cricket. Try harder next time

The BCCI on Wednesday, November 29 announced the extension of Rahul Dravid as India Head Coach, along with the team's support coaching staff.

Dravid's tenure had originally ended at the conclusion of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 but BCCI has now unanimously agreed to further the tenure.

During Dravid's first reign, India managed to mount the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Team Rankings, standing first in all formats. However, they fell short of lifting any major ICC trophy on three occasions. In his second tenure, Dravid will look to change that.

India reached the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup back in 2022, the final of the World Test Championship earlier in June, and finished as runner's up in the Men's Cricket World Cup recently after going unscathed in the league stage.

On his extension, Rahul Dravid said: "The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable. Together, we have witnessed the highs and lows, and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal.

"I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. It's a culture that stands resilient, whether in moments of triumph or adversity. The skills and talent that our team possesses are phenomenal, and what we've stressed is following the right process and sticking to our preparations, which has had a direct impact on the overall result."

Honorary Secretary of the BCCI, Jay Shah, said that there is no one else better equipped to carry the India head coach mantle than Dravid.

“I had mentioned that there is no better person than Rahul Dravid to take over the role of Head Coach at the time of his appointment, and Mr. Dravid has proven himself again with his unparalleled commitment to excellence," said Jay Shah.

"Team India is now a formidable unit across formats, and our top ranking in all three formats directly reflects his vision, guidance, and the roadmap he charted for the team."

"Having won 10 consecutive games before the final, our World Cup campaign was nothing short of extraordinary, and the Head Coach deserves appreciation for setting up the right platform for the team to flourish. The Head Coach has our full backing, and we will provide him with all the support needed for sustained success at the international level.”

Again Dravid I don't think that's a good decision

It makes sense because the ICC T20I World Cup 2024 is coming up

This right here is what hobbles Indian cricket.

Zero repercussion for failure. Already I noticed along with many others how the embarrassing defeat in final turned into a national-wide emotional support group therapy session for the whole team.

Once again the WT20 and Champ Trophy will see stale faces like Kohli and Rohit in the XI coached by Rahul Dravid whose resume is overflowing with major embarrassments at big events.

Dravid has been an abject cipher in 3 world title events. Naturally, BCCI has rewarded this performance with an extension of contract that pays over a million USD annually. Incredible.

Rahul was not interested in being the coach anymore but still, BCCI extended his contract. Maye they don't want to make drastic changes as the world t20 cup is coming up in a few months.

Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly said that he was not surprised by Rahul Dravid receiving a contract extension as the team's head coach. During a recent event, Ganguly said:

"I'm not surprised that they have shown faith in Dravid. When I was president of the Board, we convinced him to do this job. And I'm so happy to see yesterday that his tenure has been extended."

"It was always the case, depending on whether he wanted it or not. I wish him luck for another World Cup in June. He was very close this time."

"They may not have won it, but they probably were the best team in the competition with the way they played. So he's got another seven months for a World Cup in the West Indies. Hopefully, at that time, he will not be runners-up, but a champion."

"Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day."

"As a captain, I've qualified for three finals, and lost twice -- 2003 World Cup and 2001 Champions Trophy. So I don't have the right to say how to win finals. I managed just one win that too as joint winners with Sri Lanka (2002 Champions Trophy)."

"At least, they are making the final and by dominating the tournament. Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day, their luck will change. There is no rocket science."

Gautam Gambhir speaking to a media outlet:

"We saw how well India played in the World Cup and that shows that we don't need anyone from the outside. It shows that our coaches are not behind any foreign coaches. Our problem is we are probably not able to give presentation that way, use the laptop, or speak English that well. We don't come from that corporate culture, but we know how to put the hard yards on the field and do the groundwork,"

"We are not nations who have started playing cricket 10 years ago. We have players who have won the World Cup. An Indian should coach the Indian team, a Pakistani should coach the Pakistan team,"

"We have had so many great players who have won World Cups so if they want to come into the coaching setup, India and Pakistan need to back them as coaches. Emotions are very important in sport because when you wear that shirt, you know how much blood and sweat you have given to reach that level. If India don't give extension to Rahul Dravid, I hope some Indian coach replaces him."

I agree with Gambhir here. We should be more focused on hiring the national coaches for the team instead of begging some foreigner even though they are more experienced but they do not know the situation of the board and local cricket.

Speaking at an event a day before the start of
the 3rd Test match against England, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah commenting on Dravid’s tenure:

“After the [2023 ODI] World Cup, Rahul bhai had to leave for the South Africa tour immediately. We did not get to meet in between which finally happened today,” Shah said in Rajkot. “Why are you worried about a contract for such a senior person like Rahul Dravid? Rahul bhai will remain the coach in the T20 World Cup.”

“I will speak with him whenever there is time, there are back-to-back series happening right now,” Shah said. “They were in South Africa, then there was a [T20I] series against Afghanistan and now England. We did not get to speak in between at all.”

Rahul Dravid To Exit As India's Head Coach, Jay Shah's Big New Coach Plan Revelation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that an advertisement to hire a new head coach will be released soon. Rahul Dravid, who has been Team India's head coach since November 2021 and saw his contract being extended after the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But, it doesn't look like Dravid is going to be handed an extension, with the board rolling out the advertisement for a new coach soon. Dravid's current contract with the BCCI, as the head coach of the Indian team, runs out in June, when the Indian team will also be involved in a T20 World Cup campaign.

Dravid put pen to paper on an extension as the head coach of the Indian team, along with his support staff, in November 2023. But, the new contract was only valid till the end of June 2024.

Jay Shah has confirmed that Dravid can apply for the role if he wants to but there will be no automatic extension like before.

"Rahul's tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so," the BCCI secretary told Cricbuzzand also refused to rule out the possibility of hiring a foreign coach.

"We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body," the BCCI official said.

Shah all but ruled out the possibility of hiring different coaches for different formats, like some of the other international boards.

"That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India."

Shah was also asked about the Impact Player rule which has received plenty of criticism amid from active international stars, including India captain Rohit Sharma. Shah said that he will discuss the matter with the stakeholders and decide if the rule needs to be persisted with.

"Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL," he stressed on being told that the rule hampers the development of all-rounders. "We will discuss with the stakeholders - franchises and broadcasters - before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It's not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule."

Good riddance.

Tom Moody should have been our coach at least a decade back. I don't know how good he is now.
But Jay Shah is saying that they are not thinking about foreign coaches atm. So who is that person from India who can be the next coach?

Who do you want to see as the next coach?

Laxman? Sanjay manjrekar? Or somebody new?
I don't think any good Indian coach is there for any format. Moreover we need a good stubborn coach to remove the dead weights from the team in all formats and prepare for the future.

On what basis was he appointed as Secretary of the BCCI? What is the story behind it?
Lol, basis he is son of motabhai. That's his only qualification, same as previous head of BCCI, Anurag Thakur who was son of another sanghi politician.

The fine print says dravid can reapply. Good lord! Most probably it will be Laxman - another useless pappu coach. A good player doesn't necessarily make a good coach. So many examples. Lara and many SC coaches. It's a typical SC mentality. No good local coaches - all of them will become kohli rohit jadeja klrahul bootlicking fanboys and the same "experience " nonsense will continue. Honestly Ind needs a bazball type of coach like Mccullum. A complete mentality and approach shake up- but never gonna happen though as Ind team approach is very conservative

Rahul Dravid's stint as Team India head coach in numbers: Success across formats but ICC title remains elusive

Rahul Dravid’s stint as India’s Head Coach will end with the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in June and despite the ICC Trophy drought, it has been one of the most successful periods in recent history for Indian cricket. India has dominated bilateral limited-over assignments, both at home and away, under Dravid’s tenure, while also making it to the final of two marquee world events – the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup - both in 2023.

India adopted a new aggressive batting template in T20 cricket post their debacle and early exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE under the new leadership team of skipper - Rohit Sharma and coach - Rahul Dravid. The idea was simple yet revolutionary – India needed a complete overhaul in their attitude and approach if they were to compete with teams like England and Australia and beat them consistently at world events. The plan was to take advantage of the fielding restrictions in the powerplay by taking calculated risks and to focus on maximizing runs instead of conserving wickets.

The first test was against New Zealand in a three-match bilateral series at home. Rohit Sharma led the way smashing 81 runs off just 45 deliveries in the powerplay leading India to a 3-0 win. It gave rise to a new era in Indian cricket. Under the Dravid-Rohit tenure, India’s T20I run-rate in the powerplay rose from 7.5 in 2021 (till the end of the T20 World Cup) to 8.5 in the period between the two T20 World Cups with India making it to the semi-final of the next edition in Australia in 2022. India were able to maintain that average of 8.5 in 2023 as well.

Domination in T20I cricket

The fact that India is, by a distant mile, the most successful team in T20I cricket in this time-frame suggests a positive correlation between a high run-rate in the first 6 overs and success. India have won 48 of the 69 matches in the format since that bilateral home series against New Zealand in November, 2021. Both, in terms of win-percentage and win-loss ratio, they are the undisputed number 1 team in T20I cricket and are also at the top of the charts in the ICC Rankings. The next most successful team in T20I cricket in this time-frame is Australia with a win-loss ratio of just 1.75 (in comparison to India’s 2.82).

India has been victorious in a staggering 14 of the 17 bilateral series they have played in this time-frame with notable wins in England and New Zealand (2022) and Australia at home in 2023.

However, the disappointment of losing to England in the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2022 will remain a major blemish in an otherwise brilliant run for India in the format under Dravid.

A similar success story in ODIs

India had seen a decline in their ODI performance from the beginning of 2020 till the end of the bilateral series in South Africa (where they were hammered 3-0) in early 2022. They had lost 11 of the 18 ODI matches they had played during this period.

The home series against the West Indies in February, 2022 marked the beginning of the Dravid-Rohit partnership in ODIs. India routed the visitors 3-0 and were again on the upswing. They defeated the World Cup holders – England – in their own den in 2022 and were almost invincible at home. India won 10 of the 13 bilateral ODI series they played under the duo of Dravid-Rohit and had an outstanding win-loss ratio of 3.4 in the format during their tenure – they won as many as 41 of the 56 ODIs in this time-frame. Just for perspective, the next best were Australia with a win-loss of 2.

A phenomenal World Cup despite the final

India’s aggressive batting template in white-ball cricket was put to its sternest test at the 2023 50-over World Cup at home. Rohit Sharma led the way and produced one of the finest batting performances in World Cup history not only piling an aggregate of 597 but doing so at a brilliant strike rate of 125.9. Although, Kohli scored more runs, it was Rohit who provided the early impetus to India in the powerplay throughout the tournament and paved the way for their domination.

And it was domination like never before in the tournament’s history! India did not just defeat but annihilated opposition units, both the bat and ball and romped to the final. They blasted three 350-plus totals (including 410 against the Netherlands), registered four wins by 6-plus wickets mauling down targets and three other wins by margins ranging from 160 to 302 batting first. The carnage was unprecedented! Not even the great West Indian teams of 1975 and 1979 decimated bowling attacks in the manner in which India routed the opposition throughout the tournament. Although they went down in the final to Australia, they left a lasting legacy by their approach and the manner in which they played the tournament while also giving joy to millions of cricket fans across the world.

The roots of this spectacular achievement and show lay in the tactics and strategy envisioned by the pair of Dravid and Rohit.

The second-best team in Test cricket & WTC finalists

India have been the second-best team in the world after Australia in Test cricket under Dravid’s tenure. They have won 14 and lost 7 of the 24 matches they have played in red-ball cricket during this period. More significantly, they have won six series which included big home wins against Australia and England. However, there have been some disappointments too. They squandered a couple of chances to register their maiden series win in South Africa (2021 and 2023) and again lost in the final of the World Test Championship – this time to Australia in 2023.

Dravid’s tenure has been one of the most successful periods for India in their cricketing history. The domination in limited-over bilaterals has meant that India are currently the number 1 ranked team in both ODI and T20I cricket. They are not too far behind in Tests and are at number two on the charts behind Australia. India have made it to two finals and one semi-final of the three ICC world events in this time-frame.

This would be an exceptional achievement for any other coach in any other country. However, the threshold is just a bit higher in India. A win in America and the Caribbean in June would not only end the 11-year drought but also be a fitting end to the legacy of coach Dravid.

BCCI Reaches Out To Ricky Ponting For India Head Coach Job. Report Highlights 2 Obstacles

The position of the Indian team's head coach is up for grabs with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in search of a top candidate to replace current chief Rahul Dravid. With his current term ending after June, Dravid is unwilling to continue as the head coach. Dravid was handpicked as head coach in 2021 by the then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. His initial term came to an end after the ODI World Cup last year, but the board and the former Indian captain agreed to extend the contract till June 2024.

"Two experienced foreign coaches, Chennai Super Kings' Stephen Fleming and Delhi Capitals' Ricky Ponting, have been informally sounded out by the BCCI. But the response from their side hasn't been very positive. Both have been plying their trade in the IPL for a long time. They know Indian cricket inside-out. But the round the year job might prove to be a deterrent," the report suggested.

Ponting's former Australia teammate Justin Langer's name has also appeared of late.

The deadline for applying for the post is May 27, with Dravid's replacement will remain in charge until the 2027 World Cup.

‘Biggest job in cricket but exhausting’ – Justin Langer on Team India’s head coach role

A day after the Indian Cricket Board approached former two-time World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir for the soon-to-be-vacant Team India’s head coach position, ex-Australia coach Justin Langer shared his thoughts on what he called the ‘biggest job in cricket’. Following Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) 18-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2024 the other night, Langer – the franchise’s head coach, opened up on being a head coach of a national team.

Following the conclusion of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in the Americas, current Coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure will expire, with the new coach taking over the job from July 1, 2024, for three and a half years.

Since Dravid has rejected the chance of reapplying for the same position, citing personal reasons, the BCCI took to social media to invite applicants for India’s head coach role, with its deadline being May 27 – one day after the IPL 2024 final.

Explaining the challenges that come with this particular job, Langer said because of the volume of cricket and expectations of winning with this Indian Team, it would be a massive challenge for anyone applying for it. He added that the pleasure of winning an ICC trophy with this bunch of cricketers would be fun.

"It would almost be the biggest job in cricket - being the head coach of the Indian cricket team," Langer said. "One, because of the huge volume of cricket and the huge expectation. It would be a great challenge. It would be great fun, and it would be a wonderful opportunity to win ICC titles,” he added.

Having coached the Aussie team earlier, guiding them to their maiden ICC T20 WC title in 2021, Langer said he knows what one goes through, adding Dravid and Ravi Shastri (former India coach) could tell everyone the same thing.

"But with all these things, the timing has got to be right. I did four or so years with the Australian cricket team. It is all encompassing. It is exhausting. Rahul Dravid will probably tell you the same thing, and Ravi Shastri will probably tell you the same thing. The pressure on winning for the Indian team is massive," Langer continued.

Meanwhile, Langer coached LSG this season, guiding them to a sixth-place finish with seven wins and as many losses in 14 contested matches.

Certain reports have suggested that the name of Mahela Jayawardene was circulating as India's next head coach, who would be appointed for the time period from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2027. But reliable sources have told IANS that Jayawardene, the former Sri Lanka men's captain, “hasn't applied nor has been approached for the top job and is currently happy at the MI set-up”.

Jayawardene, who coached Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles, is currently serving as the franchise's global head of performance, where he's in charge of coaching and scouting MI franchises in various global T20 leagues like the SA20 and ILT20. He's also worked as a consultant for the Sri Lanka men's team in their recent World Cup campaigns.

BCCI To Involve MS Dhoni In Hunt For No. 1 Target As Rahul Dravid's Replacement: Report

The hunt for the Indian men's cricket team's new head coach has intensified with several names being linked with the job over the past few weeks. The likes of Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, etc. have all been talked about as Rahul Dravid's replacement, with the India legend's contract ending after the T20 World Cup 2024. However, it has been reported that current Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming is on the top of the BCCI's wishlist. While Fleming isn't keen on signing a long-term contract, the board is reportedly looking to use MS Dhoni as the man to persuade Fleming to do so.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier confirmed that the new coach will be given a 3-year contract, concluding after the ODI World Cup in 2027. Unlike franchise cricket, the job would require Fleming to be with the Indian team throughout the year, limiting the family time that he gets at present.

Fleming is associated with a number of franchises at the moment. He is coaching the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (USA) and the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 (South Africa), both being sister franchises of CSK. He is also the head coach of the Southern Brave in The Hundred.

If the former New Zealand captain, who is the longest-serving coach in the IPL at present, says yes to the BCCI, he would need to dissociate himself from all the franchises he coaches at present.

As per a Hindustan Times report, the BCCI reportedly feels that Fleming could be persuaded for the job, and MS Dhoni could play a key role in doing that.

"Fleming hasn't said no. He has expressed his concerns about the tenure of the contract, which is nothing unusual. Even Rahul Dravid wasn't keen in the beginning. He was persuaded. It shouldn't be a surprise if the same thing happens with Fleming. And who better than MS Dhoni to do the job?" the report quoted a BCCI source as saying.

"Opening channels with Dhoni during the IPL was not the right thing to do, but now it may be worth a shot," the report added.

Ricky Ponting reveals approach for India coaching job

The Australia great was approached during the IPL about whether he would be interested in the India coaching position set to be left vacant by Rahul Dravid.

Australia legend Ricky Ponting has revealed he has been recently approached about taking over from Rahul Dravid as India's next head coach.

Ponting just finished his seventh season as coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and the former Australian captain had mixed fortunes during this year’s tournament with his side narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

Despite having enjoyed coaching stints in the IPL with Mumbai and Delhi and filling in as Australia's national T20I coach on an interim basis in the past, Ponting has so far resisted the urge to take on the rigours of a high-profile national team on a full-time basis.

But with Dravid's time as India's head coach seemingly coming to an end and last year's ICC World Test Championship runners-up on the lookout for a new person to take the reins, Ponting is among a host of former greats to have been approached about the role.

"I've seen a lot of reports about it,” Ponting told the ICC. “Normally these things pop up on social media before you even know about them, but there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to whether I would do it.

"I'd love to be a senior coach of a national team, but with the other things that I have in my life and wanting to have a bit of time at home…everyone knows if you take a job working with the Indian team you can't be involved in an IPL team, so it would take that out of it as well.

"Also, a national head coach is a 10 or 11-month of the year job, and as much as I'd like to do it, it just doesn't fit into my lifestyle right now and the things that I really enjoy doing."

Ponting is one of many former greats to have been linked to the India coaching job, with fellow IPL coaches Justin Langer and Stephen Fleming other names to have been floated.

"I've seen a few other names thrown about as well. Justin Langer's name got thrown in yesterday, Stephen Fleming’s name has been thrown about a little bit," Ponting noted.

"Gautam Gambhir’s name has been thrown around a little bit the last couple of days as well. But I think it'd be unlikely for me just on the reasons that I've given there."

Ponting has his family travelling with him during his recent stint in Delhi, and said there was a moment when he floated the idea of him becoming India's coach to his son and youngest child Fletcher.

"My family and my kids have spent the last five weeks over at the IPL with me and they come over every year and I had a whisper to my son about it, and I said, ‘Dad’s been offered the Indian coaching job’ and he said, 'Just take it dad, we would love to move over there for the next couple of years’" Ponting laughed.

"That's how much they love being over there and the culture of cricket in India, but right now it probably doesn't exactly fit into my lifestyle."

Haven't applied, won't apply for India coach's job: Andy Flower

Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower has no plans of throwing his hat in the ring for the India coach's job, the former Zimbabwe skipper confirmed after his team's exit from the IPL play-offs. Rahul Dravid won't be continuing after the T20 World Cup and BCCI has invited fresh applications with May 27 being the deadline.

"I haven't applied. I won't be applying. I am happy with my involvement in the franchise game at the moment," the 56-year Flower said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Gautam Gambhir is believed to have been sounded out but neither the former India opener nor the BCCI brass have confirmed the development.

Flower, who was a successful red-ball coach for England, had guided the Alastair Cook-led team to a Test series win in India back in 2012.

Flower had earlier coached Lucknow Super Giants and is also part of various other franchises across the globe. he said 10 months a year for a national team isn't something that he is considering at this point.

"It's fascinating stuff and I'm working with some amazing organisations so I'm really happy with that at the moment," he said.

India doesn't need different coaches for Tests and limited overs cricket, feels Swann

A team like India, which doesn't have players competing round the year in T20 leagues across the globe, doesn't need two separate coaches for the limited overs and Test format, feels former England spinner Graeme Swann.

The BCCI has invited fresh applications for the head coach position, with a deadline set for May 27 as Rahul Dravid is unlikely to continue after the T20 World Cup.

"For a nation like India, because of the IPL and the fact the players don't play other leagues, people are based in India whole year round. You don't need split coaches," Swann replied to a PTI at the launch of the Legends Intercontinental T20 league here on Thursday.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who is currently with the Kolkata Knight Riders as team mentor, has emerged as the front runner to succeed Dravid as the likes of reputed overseas coaches like Australians Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer and Zimbabwean Andy Flower have ruled themselves out of contention.

England have adopted split coaching with Brendon McCullum serving as the red-ball coach while Matthew Mott presides over white-ball formats.

South Africa and Pakistan also have separate coaches for limited overs and red ball cricket.

"In England, we have three teams that go all around the world cause our summer is in a different time, that's one of the main reasons that split coaches in England. You don't need it in India," the 45-year off spinner, who has played 60 Tests, 79 ODIs, and 39 T20Is for England between 2000-2013.

"A good coach is a good coach, he's the right man for all three forms so be it. If the guy is specialist in white ball cricket and he's available then you can use him," Swann added.

Don't think Ponting would have a good coach for India.. would like to Jayawardene or Sangakkara as Indian.. or Nehra ji, would love to see his reactions in boundary line :nehra

It seems Langer has pulled out of coaching role after talking to the clown kl. Both Ponting and Fleming too opted out leaving Gambhir every chance to grab it.

I think it will be Gautam Gambhir's time to be the next head coach of India. He is having a great time with KKR and BCCI is also looking pretty interested in hiring him.

Bcci is looking for only top cream players/coaches .All of them are busy with franchises and they have to spent more time with the indian assignments. I think bccci should ask coaches to spent the time with team for imp tours and assistant coaches can follow the team round the clock.

BCCI has not approached any Australian cricketer for India head coach job: Jay Shah

BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that he did not approach any Australian for the role of the head coach of the Indian national team. The Indian board recently put out an application for the job as Rahul Dravid’s tenure at the helm is set to end after the T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). The deadline for applying for the role has been set on May 27 at 6PM in the evening.

Recently, it was reported that the BCCI approached 2-time World Cup-winning Australian skipper Ricky Ponting for the role. However, Jay Shah denied the media reports, saying that a ‘meticulous’ process needs to be followed for finding the right candidate for the job.

“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It's crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level,” Jay Shah said in a statement.

Role demands a high level of professionalism: Jay Shah

Dravid took charge as the head coach after Ravi Shastri stepped down following the T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dravid’s term had ended after the ODI World Cup last year, where India finished as the runners-up, after which the BCCI extended his contract.

When we talk about international cricket, no role is more prestigious than that of the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Team India commands the largest fan base globally, enjoying support that is truly unrivalled. Our rich history, passion for the game make this one of the most lucrative jobs in the world. The role demands a high level of professionalism as one gets to nurture some of the best cricketers in the world and an assembly line of talented cricketers to follow. Catering to the aspirations of a billion fans is a huge honour and the BCCI will pick the right candidate, capable of propelling Indian cricket forward,” Shah added.

For the T20 World Cup, the majority of the Indian cricketers will leave for New York on May 25. The ones taking part in the final of the IPL will leave on May 27

'Never say never': AB de Villiers on coaching role in future as BCCI hunts for new India head coach

Indian head coach Rahul Dravid is set to part ways with Rohit Sharma and the national team following the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean.

With Dravid's tenure ending after next month's marquee event, the BCCI has started inviting applications for the position of head coach. In recent weeks, several prominent names have been associated with the high profile role.

BCCI did not approach any Australian with a coaching offer: Jay Shah Why Ricky Ponting turned down Team India head coach offer Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting and Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming were among the top contenders. However, Ponting, currently the head coach of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, confirmed on Thursday that he had been approached but declined the offer to replace Dravid.

Similarly, former Australia head coach Justin Langer and Royal Challengers Bangalore manager Andy Flower have also removed themselves from consideration. As the BCCI continues its search for a new head coach, legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers was asked about his interest in potentially taking up the role. "I absolutely have no idea. I do think I'll enjoy coaching. I think there's certain elements I won't enjoy as much, which I will have to learn. With time, anything is possible, and I can think on my feet and learn as I move on," De Villiers told News18.

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, has emphasized the board's goal of finding a long-term head coach. Traditionally, Indian cricket has not employed different coaches for different formats. "But I think there are elements of a coaching job that I'll enjoy a lot. Things that I've learned over the years, the maturity that I've got now at the age of 40, looking back, a lot of things look a lot clearer when I look back at my career. So those kinds of learnings could be valuable for some younger players, even some senior players," De Villiers added.

Although De Villiers is unlikely to enter the coaching fray this season, he remains open to the possibility in the future. The former South African batter stated, "And I would love to work with some players and some teams in that regard. As a full-time head coach, that's not something that comes to mind as of yet. It's not something that really appeals to me now. But as I said, never say never. Down the line, things might change."

Adding clarity to the ongoing speculations, BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Friday denied that the board had approached any former Australian cricketer for the coaching role. "Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It's crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level," Shah stated in a BCCI release.

Gambhir is top of the list.

BCCI wants a coach who has already coached the IPL teams. But those people are hard to get because of their humongous contracts for 2 months of work.

Yeah, its going pretty bad. It went so bad that when Ponting and Langer publicly rejected BCCI coaching position, little Shah’s ego got hurt and he sent out a statement through PR merchants on social media. Laughable stuff. 😂

VVS Laxman Reluctant To Replace Rahul Dravid As Team India Head Coach; Already Has Offer From IPL Side: Report

According to a report by news agency PTI, VVS Laxman has not yet applied for the job of Team India head coach, where the deadline for submission is on May 27. This is because he does not want to get into the 'taxing' job of the Indi head coach for the next 3.5 years.

Team India will be undergoing a major change at the end of the T20 World Cup 2024, as they are all set to have a new head coach, since the contract of Rahul Dravid expires at the end of the tournament. There have been several names that have come to the fore as the next head coach of the national team, with one of the chief names being that of legendary India batter VVS Laxman. He is the current chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) . However it looks like that Laxman too might have backed out from the post.

According to a report by news agency PTI, VVS Laxman has not yet applied for the job of Team India head coach, where the deadline for submission is on May 27. This is because he does not want to get into the 'taxing' job of the Indi head coach for the next 3.5 years. A former BCCI office-bearer on conditions of anonymity told PTI that it will be completely up to Jay Shah to convince Laxman to be the part of the India set-up, at least for the red-ball series against Australia. He also suggested that Laxman also has the option to become the consultant for the series should he not choose to take te full-time job.

"It will be completely up to Jay but he has to convince VVS to be a part of the Indian set-up, at least when they play red ball series. If he is not willing to work full-time, he can always be the consultant when India play marquee red-ball series in Australia this year and England next year," the former office-bearer said.

The report also states VVS Laxman already has an offer from an IPL team in place once his stint as the director of the NCA comes to a close in Sepetember. He can also return to commentating durites.

However, the report states that BCCI would want to hold on to the former middler-oder batter and perhaps also convince him to agree to be the replacement for Rahul Dravid.

According to the report, once Laxman's term as the NCA chief ends, current India batting coach Vikram Rathour is all set to replace him.

Should he choose to apply, Laxman will be the top candidate for the job as he has been part of the NCA and also is familiar with the setup in the junior levels (India A and U-19).

So this new drama for vvs

Why is he lying? Because I don't buy that Ponting would just make up a story about being approached for the job.

The IPL pays so much for so little work that most coaches working in the IPL would take that over a hectic year-round grind that comes with the job of head-coach. Especially that of a sub-continental team. Because its not like you can just walk onto the street and not expect be recognized, or just not talk to the toxic media.

I think Jay Shah failed to rope in coaches like Pointing or Stephen Fleming etc so he is not making this excuse now that we never reached them out for the job so that he can save his face from humiliation and criticism. Just a face-saving stunt it is and nothing more.

Yeah but why? Because a few candidates didn't take the job? And then the macho posturing with the press release. Even besides this, Jay Shah generally comes across as a bit of an insecure and incompetent individual. I dunno if its because he's a nepotism hire or what but I think that the head honcho of the most powerful cricket board in the world should show a little more restraint and maturity.

Ponting said that being a head-coach of an international team is something he would like to do one day. Essentially calling him a liar publicly isn't exactly going to endear them to him.

Good riddance David. Please no VVS either. VVS is for all purposes a Dravid clone. Shastri or Gambhir would be my pick now. Both seem to have knack of bringing out the best from the players and have the passion to win no matter how tough the match situation becomes.

Everyone in BCCI is nepotism hire or someone who knows someone. What is the qualification of other office bearers in BCCI? Why so much picking on Jay Shah?
