Saw a comment on the test ranking thread about India having home series to come, and got me thinking about how much that record owes to Ashwin and Jadeja, not just bowling in tandem but also the many times they are responsible for taking India from 200-6 to 400. Jadeja is also a gun fielder.

Who would you take above them in test history in subcontinental conditions?

Filtered on tests in India, SL, WI

Ashwin

To put those stats in perspective, it is 65 runs in batting and 126/6 in bowling per innings.

Ashwin is better. Look into context not just stats. Also, would recommend not to including WI. It doesn't belong to SC.

Jadeja is far superior.

No. Only recently. Jadeja just uses natural variation of the pitch. Ashwin has a lot more tricks at his disposal. In terms of skills Ashwin is way way ahead of Jadeja. But after his hernia injury Ashwin is not the same anymore. He struggles a bit. But when on song Ashwin is a beast. Bamboozled many batsmen with subtle variations.

Ashwin's tricks are useless when he can't get help from the pitch. Jadeja has bowled India to victory on flat tracks when Ashwin was toothless.

No. It is all about the cricket balls. SG ball has pronounced seam. That is why he does well. Not because of the pitches. He had issues with Kookaburra ball.

7 man of the series. Highest by an Indian. 2 more than Tendulkar and Sehwag. Should have won 8th.. they gave it to Kohli.

Does not refute what I said. He capitalizes on turning pitches. Jadeja doesn't need them, he becomes unplayable when it turns.

Ask Sangakkara how he got bamboozled by Ashwin time and again. Ashwin is a classical off spinner who beats the batsmen in flight, drift. Jadeja basically relies on accuracy. fast darts. For one thing he is not even such a prodigious turner of the ball.

Yes, he is if there's turn on offer and he does it at a much faster pace.

Ashwin is such a fantastic bowler to watch when on song. Every ball will be a magical ball. But his poor maintenance of fitness caused him regress. Even in Australia he didn't do that bad. Averaged 26 there with 7 wickets in the one test he played.

I kind of agree with Chief Destroyer here. Ashwin has bags of tricks which are useless unless there is help. On a flatter surface it is Jadeja for me. On spinning ones both are fine.

Ashwin, context matters. From 2013 to 2016 what he did was legendary, 7 MOS I believe including in Lanka and WI. Moreover Jadeja has mostly been a sidekick, only recently has he had more responsibility. But both are great and without either of them we would never have reached the number 1 spot.
