Was switching channels when I heard on Hindi news that Dhoni shall be retiring after this world cup. He has been nudged to announce his retirement.

This is a consequence of his rather unimpressive run lately, and especially in this world cup.

Though it shall be presented as if he is retiring of his own accord.

The fact that he will retire after world cup is no state secret or rocket science.

He will be given a choice to retire in India, but if we win the WC, he will probably retire on a high

If India don't win the WC then he deserves to retire playing an ODI series in India

He will anyway retire. No need to ask him. The man deserves a proper sendoff. He changed Indian cricket forever. No one like him.

Look like he was retired already during his inns vs england.

I would have loved to see him retire in India. Regardless, a great, great servant of Indian cricket. An icon in Indian cricket who will remembered by us Indian fans for years and years. I had the good fortune of watching him play against Pakistan in my hometown back in 2007.

Good riddance. However, we might live to regret his late retirement forever. England will beat us in semi final. He lacks grace just like Ganguly. He also dragged himself to 2007WC, threw tantrums and made everything toxic when not favored by Chappel. What happened in 2007 WC is for all to remember and regret. I guess this is why team management is kind to Dhoni. They know Dhoni is very well connected politically and has friends in media. Afterall, he saved his in IPL fixing saga. I guess they have to endure grandpa Dhoni so that he doesn't ruin team environment.

Dhoni is definitely at the end of his career, at least in ODI cricket.

Clear sign of it - His Family(Wife and Daughter have been at the world cup from the first game), which is very unusual when he travels outside representing India. May be, they reckon that this would be his last appearance in a global tournament.

Dhoni play well with yellow jersey and in Chennai stadium.

He lost the good name by playing world Cup.
BCCI and Dhoni should have taken retirement decision 2 years back.

How come sourav was at fault criticizing chapel? Every one including Sachin was critical of him. I will forever brand chapel as Irfan killer. Btw see also sourav s record in the year when he retired. MoS against SL, 200 against pakistan. In sub continent people live legends, and they continue. Sourav was no exception, so does Sachin etc. He is the one and will forever be remembered as the captain who changed India. Period

38 years old, 90 test matches, 348 ODIs, 98 T20Is.......

Would be huge shock if he didn't retire.

This has been known for a while. The only reason Dhoni stuck with the ODI format after retiring from Test & T20's was to play this WC. This is his swan song

He does look like a very old man now with all that white hair and is not performing. Time to call it quits but leave it for him to decide.

I hope he quits T20 cricket too and becomes a coach/mentor type. As a player he should have retired after 2015 WC.

If Lata thinks he should play than who am I to say he should retire she is the authority on cricket anyways. This drama of sub-continant culture where everything is based on emotions is very very illogical.

These people are clueless about sport and shouldn't be given any importance.

Dhoni will be 42 during the next WC ***, it makes zero sense for him to continue. Should be asked to graciously retire or be booted out.

Oldies will obviously support Dhoni. It’s good though. The longer he stays now, the worse for India. Should’ve left 4 years ago

If he doesn't quit he needs to be kicked out. Indians are so emotional they turn sports into a daily soap opera. Joke really

MS deserves a home ODI series but nothing after that.

He has nothing left to do or prove.

Lata might have a great voice but she is clueless about everything else in life.

Deserves nothing.

We gave up a WC for him.

Now kick him out.
Yeah, even far greater players like VVS and Dravid didn't get a farewell game. Tendulkar (ODIs) also didn't get one. Dhoni has already hurt us so badly over last 5-odd years that the only thing he deserves is a formal kick in the backside.

Indians are crying watching Dhoni cry.

Saying we are with you Dhoni.

Not much criticism of Kohli either.

Man... Either the new generation is stupid... Or they just support their heroes over their nation.

Lost a lot of faith in Indians post this WC.

Pathetic loser mentality.

And these idiots talk about patriotism. :))

Dhoni should be given a farewell ODI in Ranchi like Tendulkar played his last test in Mumbai.
Indian cricket owes nothing to Dhoni who will never ever come anywhere near Tendulkar as far as stature in Indian cricket is concerned. Dhoni is a politician par excellence and pulls a lot of strings from behind.

PS: Had he retired 4-5 years back, things might have been different though.

Why do asian teams ask old playes to retire?
Just tell them that they will not be selected anymore!!

If they want to retire or not thats up to them, but they are not going to play for the national side again!

What else do you think of them if more than 40% of them can choose Modi for a 2nd term despite, well let's not get there......

This is such an apt article on the state of Indian cricket & polity...

Shoaib Malik is so much more graceful than grandpa.

More muppets asking grandpa to stay on,

https://www.rediff.com/cricket/repo...of-cricket-left-in-him-world-cup/20190711.htm

"I completely appreciate the way he played in the whole tournament. That (retirement) is his personal decision. Only he can take that decision and it is his body which has to answer him. I still feel that he has a lot of cricket left in him. The youngsters in the team still need his mentorship, " Edulji, herself a former India captain, added.

Malik is the biggest disgrace i have ever seen in cricket!!
So sly, knew he would get crucified for his 8, 0 and 0 scores in the wc, so he announced his retirement from odis ONLY, knowing in the next 2 years are 2 world t20s, that he can destroy our chances of winning!!
Also, he will continue for the next 2 years to get his A contract MONEY!!!

He deserves a farewell

People are too harsh on him. I still feel Kohli will need him in the next T20 World cup. People underestimate his contributions.

His innings was a difference between losing to Afghanistan and winning it, also his innings against WI.

Maybe he was lucky to be included in the starting squad, but sorry, how did India lose this world cup because of him?

Fans have to save IPL superishtaars like KL Rahul, Pant and Pandya from criticism so Dhoni is the easy target. Anyone who has understanding of cricket knows that Dhoni was not responsible for our loss against New Zealand. :inti

Seriously sir...I am really astonished people are blaming him for the loss. without him for guidance Ravindra Jadeja would not have played that kind of innings..

Dhoni should there for T20 world cup also..Peopl;e here who are criticising him have no answer on who will replace him as keeper

Exactly. India lost the match because of top 5 batsman out of which 3 were hyped as to be the next kohli, gilchrist and kapil dev. Now that all of them failed in a semi final match their fans are putting the blame on Dhoni which is pretty funny. :inti

He was not responsible but he is now 36 and needs to go for younger generation (good or bad is another question).

How? India topped the group stage. Dhoni came in to bat after Pant and Pandya who were the real culprits for India losing the semi final match. Still I would like to know what makes you think that we gave a WC for him? Please elaborate. :inti

Thats true. His time is up and he should reture now. But putting the blame on him for our world cup exit is not right. And that is why I am defending him here.

He won’t be playing the next WC at 42 years. What’s the point in clinging on to the ODI team. Time to build the team for 2023. With his power hitting abilities long diminished, no point playing him in T20Is either.

Dhoni rightly got rid of seniors before the inaugural WT20. He risks meeting the same fate.

Were pant and pandya bigger cuprits than your beloved DK.?
This is where your hypocrisy gets exposed, you mention pant and pandya but left dk.

How did India lose because of Pant and Pandya who came in at 5-2 and 24-4 respectively and at least put up a couple of thirties between them?

If there is anything Dhoni could have done differently it was to come up the order and bat alongside each of Pant, Pandya and Jadeja (roughly similar attitudes to batting). Might have avoided that final five over failure then. But make no mistake, that isn't where the match was lost, and to blame any of Dhoni, Pant or Pandya is disingenuous.

If he does not retire by himself he will ruin his reputation which he has already done to some extent. He was the biggest critic of shewag, ganguly and dravid playing past their peak and the man behind their exist but now he is staying beyond his peak years himself.

At his peak he would have not played like he did and leave it all to Jadeja. At his peak he would have also struck a few blows out of ground and made the game much easier for Jadeja.

Pant played a very sensible innings and he showed why is the next big thing.
The second coming of Yuvraj singh.

This is called low standards most team got players who can play this kind of innings.
Yes i have low standards for a 21 year old guy playing his sixth odi, he needs time and trust, he has already proved his ability in tests, give him some time and watch him develop into a proper batsman.

I think he just one level above a brainless slogger. The way he got out against NZ was unforgivable.
I don't care how he plays, Ms dhoni has the worst technique but he is an atg.
I don't think brainless tulleybaazi will help him retain spot in test matches, so lets see.

Nobody overhyped DK here. You can kick him out if you want to.

When anyone questions your Pant and Pandya you start losing your cool and take it personally as if those two are your real brothers lol.

Pant once again played a stupid shot and Pandya played an inning of 32 from 62 balls yet there was not a single line from criticism from you. I actually praised Pant's inning of 48. That is good enough to prove that I am not a hypocrite like you here. :inti

Okay fair enough but dont claim he is some kind of ATG then.

Only overhyped players are culprits.
What kind of logic is this.?
Pant never asked me to hype him.
Dk was the biggest failure in this world cup and you rooted for his inclusion over pant.

Debate is settled :
Pant>dk and so he is msd's successor.

Obviously overhyped guys are the ones who have to prove themselves when it matters the most. I and also the selectors preferred DK before Pant because they knew Pant has a habit of throwing his wicket after making those 30 runs. Your standards are pretty low as an indian fan if you want a batsman like that at number 4.

And Pant has to win us a match like DK did in the Nidahas Trophy final. There was one match against West Indies too where Pant played a stupid shot and nearly lost India the match and there also DK saved India.

Criticising Pant won't make me a DK or Dhoni fan. Your debate is still unsettled. Hopefully we will find a keeper batsman like Alex Carey not Umar Akmal. :inti

Oh that Nidhahas finals? Why did we need that? It cost us the world cup now! If you read my recent discussions you will understand the reason for the failure in World Cup! Three wicket-keepers occupied the place of No.4 & No.5 batsmen in the team! And you are bringing these useless Srilanka/West Indies/Bangladesh matches and our selectors (just like you) selected players based on that! If you want to analyze the quality between Pant & DK you have to look at his test centuries he got in tough conditions against tough opponents (though it is Test format - all it needed is expose him to ODI cricket and give him time and make him play at No.6 or No.7 where WK batsmen are used to play in Tests/ODIs... Non-flat ODI pitches still require a kind of traditional test cricket approach where No.4 & No.5 Regular proper batsmen take more responsibility than WK batsmen who come later on! But what happened? DK came to the mix based on that odd innings against weaker opponent and Dhoni became stubborn to leave the team, everyone knew it is going to affect the team composition and it eventually did!)

Pant as lone wicket-keeper batsman batting at No.6 or 7 would have solved all our problems and we didn't really have to carry any extra wicket-keeper batsmen thinking that they are superior to regular batsmen! Rahul was sufficient for substitute Wicket-keeper role! None of these keepers including Dhoni got injured and dropped because of that! So foolish we are! If Dhoni was our choice as WK, then stick to that and don't select Pant or DK, select proper batsmen even if they don't have much experience! Don't expect Dhoni to do any magic (expect him to come at No.4, he will never do that!)

This match was not lost by Dhoni/Pant/Pandya/DK or anyone (actually all the batsmen failed including Kohli & Rohit) it was lost because of bad team composition that's it! On such pitches (or even flat pitches for that matter) you need proper accomplished regular No.4 & No.5 batsmen (These are such crucial batting positions in Tests & ODIs... In T20 you can get away with any batsmen & if they play in any position! But not so in Tests/ODIs) It is a rarity that all Top 6 batsmen will fail in the same match (if that happened then that team failed really badly, and they don't deserve to be a top team! India did not lose the match like this! They lost the match by improper planning, by going with an handicapped team!). At the most Top 3 can fail - then No.4 & No.5 or No.6 will do the repair job usually! This has happened to most teams including the great Australian side! It is not that Gilchrist/Hayden/Ponting scored in all the matches and never failed! So many times I have seen their middle order bailed them out from tough positions (No.4 to No.7), thats why they were such a dangerous side! They didn't even needed strong tail (they never depended on them! No.1 to No.7 took all the responsibility! Here people complain about Indian Tail! As long as they are good bowlers we should not worry about it - we should worry about No.1 to No.7 batting! Compromising on bowling will mean chasing/setting bigger targets and we Indians know much about it when we had a weaker bowling lineup!)

Should I have to explain 1+1 = 2 for you?

Or maybe you took my comment to mean ONLY Dhoni was at fault and no one else, which I didn't.

He kept calling Pant a hack.

Yet Pant was WAYYYYY better than Dhoni in the game against England. First game in WC for him I believe.

Then against NZ, Pant came in when we were 4 down.

He stabilized with Pandya. Just went for a bad shot (his fault no doubt but by no means a bad performance).

Dhoni came in AFTER Pant and Pandya weathered the storm...and he had the luxury of batting with jaddu who was striking it at 110-130 odd and yet he batted SO slowly that required run rate climbed to unmanageable levels.

However Dhoni is the hero.

Pant and Pandya are the culprits. :))

Lol what? You said we gave the cup for him when I asked how, you brought India's game against England. That was not a knock out game so please explain how is Dhoni responsible for India's exit from the World Cup?

You are showing sympathy towards Pant and highlighting how he came when we were 4 down but intentionally forgeting Dhoni came when we were 5 down.

Jaddu was able to play that because Dhoni stayed there with him. Dhoni was not a hero in that knock out match but he wasn't a villain either. Pant and Pandya had a golden opportunity to repeat what peak Dhoni, Raina and Yuvi used to do for India but they failed.

I know its been more than 5 years but you have surely lost that sensibility and have slowly turned into a whining little fan. :inti
