Ukraine has amassed a million soldiers, at the behest of President Volodymyr Zelensky, to recapture its southern areas, defense minister Alexey Reznikov has claimed in an interview with The Times.

“We understand that, politically, it’s very necessary for our country. The president has given the order to the supreme military chief to draw up plans,” he said in an interview published on Sunday.

“We’re people of the free world and with a real sense of justice and liberty. We have approximately 700,000 in the armed forces and when you add the national guard, police, border guard, we are around a million strong,” the minister added.

Reznikov praised the British effort to help Ukraine, especially Ben Wallace, Britain’s defense secretary, who, according to him, was key to helping shift the approach from providing Soviet equipment to NATO-standard 155mm artillery, guided multiple launch rocket systems and high-tech drones.

This, Reznikov explained, will make up for heavy losses in the Donbass region in the face of mass Russian artillery shelling. President Zelensky previously said Ukraine was losing some 200 men a day in the area.

Reznikov also mentioned other allies, claiming an “anti-Kremlin coalition was born.”

“Our partners in London and Washington DC and other capitals, they are invested in us, not only with money but the expectations of their people that we have to make the Kremlin lose. We have to win this war together,” he said.

Russian president Vladimir Putin’s old alliances have also been shattered, Reznik argued, pointing to Kazakhstan: recently president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev publicly refused to recognize the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics as sovereign nations.

“I’m sure that in the next few years we will see a procession of calls for sovereignty on Russian territory. The Russian Federation will finish its life as different countries – Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, etc,” Reznikov said.

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

Applicants are not required to have lived in Russia or pass a Russian language test.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree expanding a fast track to Russian citizenship to all citizens of Ukraine, a document published on the government’s website showed.

Until recently, only residents of the self-proclaimed breakaway territories of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) in eastern Ukraine, which Russia seeks to “liberate” from Kyiv’s control, as well as the Russian-occupied regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia, were eligible for the simplified procedure.

Between 2019 – when the procedure was first introduced for the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk – and this year, more than 720,000 residents of the rebel-held areas in the two regions – about 18 percent of the population – have received Russian passports.

In late May this year, three months after Russia invaded Ukraine, the fast-track procedure was also offered to residents of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. A month ago, the first Russian passports were reportedly handed out there.

The decree on Monday ordered that “all citizens of Ukraine” be given “the right to apply for admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified manner”.

Ukraine condemned the decree as a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“The mentioned decree is another encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, incompatible with the norms and principles of international law,” the foreign ministry said.

“Ukrainians do not need Putin’s citizenship and attempts to impose it by force are doomed to failure,” Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

Kuleba called Monday’s decree “worthless” and proof of “Putin’s aggressive appetites”.

In May, Putin signed a decree simplifying the process for residents of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson and Zaporizhia regions to acquire Russian citizenship and passports.

The decree marked a further step towards “Russification” of the two regions, where Moscow’s war in Ukraine has enabled it to establish a continuous land bridge linking Russia to the Crimean Peninsula, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

At the time, Kyiv said the plan was a violation of international law and accused the Kremlin of “criminal” behaviour.

“The illegal issuing of passports … is a flagrant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as norms and principles of international humanitarian law,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement then.

Applicants are not required to have lived in Russia and do not need to provide evidence of sufficient funds or pass a Russian language test.

Iran plans to supply Russia with potentially hundreds of drones for its war in Ukraine, some with combat capabilities, a US official has said.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that information received by the US suggested Iran was preparing to train Russian forces to use the drones.

He added that it was unclear whether Iran had delivered them yet.

Drones have played an integral part in the war for both Ukraine and Russia.

Just last week, Ukraine appealed for donations of thousands of drones to aid its war efforts.

Both sides are using them to spot the enemy's positions and then help direct and correct their own artillery fire on a target.

Mr Sullivan added that intelligence received by the US supported the view that Russia's assault on eastern Ukraine was "coming at a cost to the sustainment of its own weapons".

He also observed that Iranian drones had previously been used by Yemen's Houthi rebels to attack Saudi Arabia.

His comments came ahead of US President Joe Biden's visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia this week. Neither country has so far joined sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Israel sees Iran, which calls for its elimination, as its biggest regional threat.

The US and other allies have supplied billions of dollars' worth of weapons to Ukraine since the invasion in February.

Mr Sullivan said the US would continue to "sustain the effective defence of Ukraine".

SU-35's are operating and recently shot down 2 might 29's. The Ukrainians can't really get anything credible into the sky at the moment.

The armata is not going to be fielded on the battlefield anytime soon..they are using their t90's which are doing a decent job at the moment..especially the latest versions that have in many cases installed counter measures against the javelin.

The Russians are now free to use their attack helicopters which they use for CAS and anti tank ops..but are now using them more extensively..ukrops just don't have enough soldiers or weaponry on the field.

The fact is the Russians invaded a heavily armed massive country..we didn't know their true 9bjectives and you don't normally until later anyways..it seems the whole northern invasion was a feint to drag 60k ukrops to defend Kiev and allow the real invasion to move from the south and east..I've said this before this is hard fighting in hard territory against forces that have similar training..its like the US invading texas..
