Afridi as a chief selector, is going to be interesting, espically when it comes to the white ball team, however will he do a good job, a great job, or a horrible job, only time will tell.

Good. It’s clear you’re not good enough to choose XIs by yourself after 3 years in the game and so don’t deserve complete authority. It’s ok. Not everyone is meant for that kind of freedom in leadership. That’s why chief selector, coach roles exist to help you out.

That's correct. Players who are good enough for domestic cricket but not good for International team provide guidance, experience and tough competition to youngsters entering into domestic cricket, they are the essential backbone of all the cricket boards domestic setup.

Boards also show that cricket is a viable career to kids and their parents by showing hundreds of players in the domestic setup earning good income. Ranji trophy/Vijay Hazare/Duleep/Deodhar/Irani/Syed Mustaq Ali trophy money is good enough to live a upper middle class lifestyle in India.

He played many games and made Pakistan loose so many. His performance that you outlined do not tell the true story of his poor career. Worst thing is that he ran away during a test series and retired. If Afridi didn't have good luck, he wouldn't have lasted a year playing for Pakistan. This is the true reality.

I don’t want to derail this thread but to say he lost us so many games and forget the games he won us just shows you how ungrateful our fanbase is.

They expected one man to carry a team, and because he couldn’t they all blamed him.

This is nothing considering the amount of matches he played for Pakistan. He played many World Cups (ODIs &T20s) from 1999 to 2016 and his contribution was awful in several WCs. I agree he won some matches with his individual performances but he has very cleverly manipulated his entire career. He was neither a proper bowling allrounder nor he was a proper batting allrounder. When he used to fail with the bat he started calling himself bowler and when he failed with the bowl he considered himself as a batsman. He played for so many years in international cricket because of his strong brand in media and blind fan following. Even after 2016 he was not willing to retire gracefully and was asking for farewell match.

He probably caused more long-term damage to our cricket with his brainless batting than any other cricketer. Because he probably inspired a generation of mediocre young cricketers to think they could hack it by being just as brainless with the bat. And yeah, he lost us WAAAAY more games with the bat than he ever won.

He's a limited-overs legend for his exploits with the ball. But post-2006 he was garbage with the bat. More of a detriment to the side than any kind of a positive. Because no matter the situation, he always played the same way. People only remember the outstanding performances he gave in the 2009 T20 WC semi-final and final, the time he hammered Bangladesh in the Asia Cup or the time he hit Ashwin for six in the last over. What they don't remembers are the countless number of games in between where he threw his wicket away after playing some brainless shot. He was the type of batter that you could never rely on, and its funny that he is still celebrated by some for his signature brand of brainless batting. I guess some people really have been watching cricket with their eyes closed.

And by the looks of it, he has brought some of the same characteristics of his batting to his selection.

Now he, and his fellow culprit Haroon Rashid (the Chief Selector at the time and possibly our worst ever) are back on the selection panel ! What a country this is where failure is not only accepted but rewarded.

Afridi had a lot of ups and downs in his career, but one thing that sticks in my head is when he retired from Test cricket in the middle of the series against Australia. (after being named captain.)

Very good point, I guess one way of looking at this one differently from my perspective is that being elevated to a leadership position gave Afridi new eyes on some of the things which were occurring off the field at that time, and he decided that he wanted no part of such a setup.

Exactly. Reaching Semi Final of 2011 WC was an average accomplishment. Pak defeated only 2 major teams Aus & Sri Lanka in that WC and heavily lost to NZ. All other matches were cakewalk for Pakistan in Asian conditions. The first major challenge was against India in Semi Final which was lost.

Persistence with players like Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik & Hafeez was one of the major reason for Pakistan's downfall in ODI cricket. Misbah was also an average ODI cricketer but he didn't played as many matches as these guys played

This is old news…just a quick google search and you’ll find quotes of Afridi stating that he reported the agent to the coach and manager.

Mocking a team that takes players like Shan Masood, over proper T20 openers like Sharjeel is justifiable.

Mocking a t20 team that plays 2 accumulators at the top is justifiable.

Stating Afridi did nothing in his career as a player and captain is factually incorrect, and that’s what I’ve shown here.
