New Delhi: A die-hard fan of Shahid Afridi has been arrested for wearing Pakistan team jersey during a cricket match in Hailakandi in Assam.

According to reports, the youth, Ripon Chowdhury was apprehended by local police following a complaint filed by the youth wing of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

Reports claimed that a FIR was also filed against him under section 120 (B), 294 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Assam News reported that the local Bhartiya Yuva Morcha committee had lodged the FIR against the youth, saying he had indulged in an anti-national act. And he was arrested on Saturday.

It's worth noting that in a similar incident, early this year in February, a Pakistani fan of Virat Kohli was initially sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.

Umer Daraz, from his house on January 25 in a village about 200 kilometres from Lahore for hoisting an Indian flag on the rooftop of his house.

"I am a big fan of Virat Kohli. I support the Indian team because of Kohli. Hoisting of Indian flag on the rooftop of my house only shows my love for the Indian cricketer," Daraz had reportedly told.

He was later released on bail.

I didnt know cricket was big in assam.

Good for those of you who are happy with it

Not happy.

Most people would not care if someone is wearing a Pak shirt. Its only the Hindu right wing organization and groups that report these kinds of things.

I am pretty sure the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha (stands for Indian youth front) is related to BJP/RSS. Only these guys report such things. They are like the Hall Monitors in schools.

I didnt know cricket was big in assam.

It has decent fan following for a region that is traditionally ignored by the BCCI.

Whenever Team India played Odis at the stadium, it received full house most of the times but the venue is being neglected for sometime now. The bigger centers get most of the Odis and T20s.

It is the only Cricket Venue in the North East region of India.

He was probably "arrested" so the others don't take matters in to their own hands. He was probably warned and let go. Again this is just my assumption.

We also arrested a Pakistani who hoisted an Indian fan who was a Kohli fan. This is similar.

Terrible, a friend of mine had Afridi's dp on fb for the longest time i know.

True. Looks like India sees us as a role model rather than a failed state. Maybe they should set their sights higher.

This is worse.

Hoisting a flag is stretching things and he should have known better. A bit similar and as bad as openly supporting Pakistan in an India-Pak game.

Wearing a specific player's jersey or having posters in your room should be considered harmless.

India to me and millions of other people is a failed state. I don't want to mention their zillion problems. This is not to suggest Pak does not have many problems as well.

Didn't say charging a man for wearing or hoisting any flag was right. We should have let him do it that would have embarrassed India. Then again our law and police are not smart at all, they work on emotion of the moment not if or not it will be beneficial for the country. In today's era everything becomes news the next minute, we have no PR skills.

Afridi sad about detention of his fan in India

Shahid Afridi has expressed disappointment about the detention of a fan wearing a jersey with the Pakistan allrounder's number embossed on it during a cricket match in Assam.

"It is shameful that such an incident should take place. It is sad that politics is being played with cricket," Afridi was quoted as saying by 'Jang' newspaper.

According to reports, Ripon Chowdhury was apprehended by local police following a complaint filed by the youth wing of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

The police are said to have arrested the youth and lodged a case under section 120(B), 294 of the Indian Penal code.

Afridi said he would appeal to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the matter.
"Such incidents highlight intolerance and should be condemned. Because if there are fans of Pakistan cricket players in India the same is the case in Pakistan where there are fans of Indian players," Afridi said.

"Cricket fans should only be seen as cricket lovers in both countries."

In a similar incident in February, a Pakistani fan of Indian Test captain Virat Kohli was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for hoisting the Indian flag on the roof of his house, before the court granted him bail in Okara, Punjab.

Afridi said that cricket should be kept away from politics.

I am going to jail for same crime. Find me and jail me Patriots.

Lala for life:sa

Give lala one more chance:afridi

What does the sections he is being charged for say?

Surely the courts would give a telling off to the police for slapping these charges for just wearing a jersey? Is there any lawyer here who can elaborate?

Tomorrow you might get jailed for wearing Messi or Rondalo jersey you never know..

Pakistan or anything related to Pakistan is a taboo in India right now.

Do you live in India? Let's hope you get arrested for spending your whole day posting on a pakistani forum. Then you might understand how redicilous this is.

I think he was arrested for being a Shahid Afridi fan.....lack of cricket knowledge in a cricket crazy country like India should be illegal :kohli

I am not supporting this arrest.

Most people would not care whom you support. But its the Modi fan boys and RSS/VHP affiliated organizations that act like school monitors ready to pounce on anyone who are supporting Pakistan or its people.

I don't live in India now. But I travel there enough to know how the sentiment is among certain sections of the society.

Assam BJP slams release of Afridi 'fan'

SILCHAR: The BJP on Saturday criticized the release of a youngster who had been arrested for wearing a jersey with 'Shahid Afridi' written on the back.

The party said the youth's quick release would only encourage jihadi elements in minority-dominated Hailakandi district.

Addressing the media here on Saturday, the organizing general secretary of BJP's Barak Valley coordination committee, Nitya Bhushan Dey, said the law and order situation in Hailakandi left a lot to be desired.

"How can a player in Hailakandi wear a Pakistan cricketer's jersey? How can he play in a tournament on the grounds of the District Sports Association?" the veteran BJP leader asked.

"This incident proves that the district administration is not serious about maintaining law and order. This is nothing but encouraging the jihadi elements in this part of the state. The security of the district is at stake," Dey said and sought strong action against such elements.

Ripon Chowdhury, 27, had been arrested in Hailakandi on December 19 for wearing a Pakistani team jersey. He had been held following a complaint lodged against him by the local youth wing of BJP and was later released on bail.

Reacting to the development, Afridi had said he was hurt at the arrest of his fan. The all-rounder had condemned the arrest and termed it 'shameful'.

What's the correlation between wearing an Afridi shirt and 'jihadi elements'?

Arresting people for things such as this would only result in these people getting a negative mindset about India-Indians-Police and could potentially create a revenge mindset in their minds which can result in 'Jihadi mindset'.. can't believe the courts did not give a good fatkaar to police..

Ridiculous stuff. India and Pakistan should grow up and stop making everything political. Fans should be able to support whoever they want. FYI, I am a fan of Dhoni and Kohli :kohli :msd

Indians and Pakistanis are free to wear Wayne Rooney t-shirts and support english football clubs but can't wear jersey with each other's superstars name. :shezzy :kohli
