Shakib Al Hasan opts to skip Test series against Sri Lanka to play in the IPL

There is nothing to be ashamed for players to chose franchises over national side. National boards earn all their money through the players and it is them who should be ashamed for paying players peanuts in this modern age. Bangladesh board for example generates huge revenue and yet the player incentives are pathetically low. They're the one to be blamed for this.

If a player got into cricket for the money than he got into it for the wrong reasons to begin with.

And sorry but you can't twist this argument any other way. 30 years ago players used to play for much less and far fewer incentives. And not all of them got county contracts. Not every board is CA, ECB or BCCI either. Other boards are not as rich and have to deal with a number of constraints. Cricketers in Bangladesh are still superstars and are both richer and on a higher pedestal than other sportsmen.

And if playing and doing well for your country is not your number one priority then you should stop the charade and retire instead of making a mockery of the game for youngsters who actually dream about representing their country.

Would love it if Bangladesh do not select Shakib for the T20 World Cup.

They are most likely going to lose anyways, might as well do it by making an example of their mercenary.

I don't think Bangladesh has the luxury of doing that. They are a minnow side in T20s and Tests and Shakib is the only world-class talent they have who could walk into any team in the world. He will continue to pick and choose like he has in the past and BCB won't have any choice but to play ball.

PCB could not even stop Amir and a hundred other Pak players from selling their country for 5 dollars? Imagine Amir, Imad, Hafeez, Shaheen or Babar refusing 2 million dollars, something they can’t earn in their life time without IPL. You expect too much from PCB. Good to have this optimism.

Pak fans are getting emotional. As Pak players are barred from IPL, they wish other boards to also bar their players from IPL. I can understand the feeling.

But let’s get realistic. Most Doctors, policemen, nurses, teachers, politicians, religious leaders even Armymen, get into the profession for money, even if we wish they won’t. Why should cricket players be different.

99.999% of Indian/Pak/BD serious college cricketers will never get to play in IPL/PSL. BCCI and PCB don’t care about them, with most become drivers, clerks, sweepers, small shopkeepers eventually, somehow sustaining them.

Why shouldn’t the 0.001% make money when they can. You don’t have to be totally greedy.

On a cricket greed scale where 0 Amir is one who care only for cricket and 1 Amir is one who will sell his soul and country for money, anyone below 0.5 Amir is fine. Shakib is probably 0.4.

Takes courage to do this. More power to players who exercise their freedom instead of bowing to others diktats. Well done Shakib.

More than the board, it is those potato chips fans who should be ashamed, as they put their own entertainment over the financial wellbeing and the family of the players. Remember the NZ test cricketer Mathew Sinclair, who scored a double ton on his test debut? He had to apply for unemployment benefits. No board or this lazy selfish potato chips ingrate fans helped him.

The BCB may reconsider the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for Shakib Al Hasan to play in this year's IPL, according to Akram Khan, the board's cricket operations chairman. The news comes less than 24 hours after Shakib had accused the BCB, and particularly Khan, of misrepresenting him about his decision to skip the Tests against Sri Lanka.

Khan, who spoke shortly after a meeting at the BCB president Nazmul Hassan's residence in Dhaka, said that discussions about Shakib's NOC will be held in the next couple of days, after Shakib had said in an interview on Friday that he never wrote in his letter to the BCB that he didn't want to play Tests.

"I heard that he said that I didn't read his letter," Khan said. "Perhaps I misunderstood his letter. He wants to play Tests, from what he has said. In the next couple of days we will discuss about his NOC. If he has interest, he will play Tests in Sri Lanka. We will decide about the rest after hearing the whole interview."

Khan confirmed that he read Shakib's letter where it was mentioned that he wanted to skip the Sri Lanka series to play in the IPL. "Shakib wrote in the letter that he wants to play the IPL instead of the Test series in Sri Lanka," he said.

Shakib said on Friday that Khan has continued to mention his desire not to play the Test series even though he wrote to the board that he wants to play in the IPL - where he has an Rs 3.2 crore ($438,000 approx) contract with Kolkata Knight Riders - to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

"Those who keep saying that I don't want to play Tests, I am sure they didn't read my letter," he said. "I didn't mention anywhere in my letter to the BCB that I don't want to play Tests. I wrote that I want to play the IPL to prepare myself for the World Cup.

"Akram bhai especially has repeatedly said that I don't want to play Tests. I think he said it again in an interview yesterday. I guess he never read the letter. People should have a clear idea that I wanted to play the IPL even if ODIs were scheduled during this time.

"I want to take advantage of playing in the same grounds and against the same players who I will face in the World Cup T20 four months later. I can share the same experience with my Bangladesh team-mates," Shakib said.

Shakib also pointed the finger at the former cricketers who are in the BCB currently, and said that the BCB's player development process, particularly the high performance programme, hasn't produced enough good cricketers in the last five years.

Naimur Rahman, the high performance programme's chairman and a former Bangladesh captain, said that Shakib's comments were surprising.

"In the last five years, a number of our Under-19 cricketers have come through the HP to play for the senior team," Rahman said. "They recently beat Ireland Wolves. So this is a surprising comment. I don't know if there's anything behind it."

Rahman added that Shakib's point about respecting Bangladeshi cricketers was contradictory as he himself isn't respecting the former cricketers in the board. "He also spoke about respecting players, so did he respect the former cricketers in the board?" he said.

How can IPL have a seperate window? Is there some sort of clause written someone that the league with the most financial clout gets it's own window?

It can only have an unofficial window if all boards acquisce to the BCCI's end goal that nobody plays international cricket when their cash cow is in swing.

I don't just blame BCCI for the way that cricket is going. Every board is responsible too. Every country should play a normal calendar and there should be no agreement from any board that their players are available for IPL if international committments are going on.

This is how things started. I remember Aus players preferring to play warm up games than go over to IPL. Then the Indians came with their suitcases of money and all that changed.

I don't see how any Indian could complain about that unless they are exceptionally selfish.

Every board in ICC voted unanimously to give IPL a exclusive window in the FTP when the last FTP was agreed to and accepted.

Boards get paid millions when their players play the IPL. For eg CSA will get 1.6mn usd this year.

How many posters or their parents on this thread have left their country of origin and settled in a western country for a better living?

This has nothing to do with a player selecting IPL over national team. He is not leaving his country of origin and also doesn't mean that he loves his country any less. Playing in IPL is a strategic decision for him due to T20 WC. He didn't say he is not interested in playing test series.

IPL 2021: Bangladesh To Reconsider Shakib Al Hasan's NOC After 'Misrepresentation' Accusation

Shakib Al Hasan had claimed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has 'misrepresented' his decision to play in the Indian Premier League at the expense of serving the national team

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday said it could reconsider the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for Shakib Al Hasan, a day after the star all-rounder accused the body of "misrepresenting" him over his decision to prefer the IPL over national team duty. (More Cricket News)

Shakib had on Sunday claimed that the BCB has "misrepresented" his decision to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the expense of serving the national team in a Test series against Sri Lanka.

BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan, who spoke shortly after a meeting at the board president Nazmul Hassan's residence here, said that discussions about Shakib's NOC will be held in the next couple of days.

I heard that he said that I didn't read his letter," Khan said.

"Perhaps I misunderstood his letter. He wants to play Tests, from what he has said. In the next couple of days we will discuss about his NOC. If he has interest, he will play Tests in Sri Lanka. We will decide about the rest after hearing the whole interview," he was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.com.

Khan said that in Shakib's letter the cricketer had clearly mentioned that he has opted out of the Sri Lanka series to play in the IPL.

"Shakib wrote in the letter that he wants to play the IPL instead of the Test series in Sri Lanka," he said.

With Bangladesh not in contention in the World Test Championship, Shakib, who will represent Kolkata Knight Riders in the cash-rich T20 tournament, had said that it was more meaningful to compete in the IPL, as that would help him prepare better for the next T20 World Cup, which will be held in India later this year.

Former Bangladesh captain and high performance programme's chairman, Naimur Rahman termed Shakib's comments as surprising.

"In the last five years, a number of our Under-19 cricketers have come through the HP to play for the senior team," Rahman said.

"They recently beat Ireland Wolves. So this is a surprising comment. I don't know if there's anything behind it."

"He also spoke about respecting players, so did he respect the former cricketers in the board?" he said.

The BCB should make an example out of Shakib, especially after how they protected him in the match-fixing saga to ensure a reduced sentence. The more boards pamper allegedly corrupt players, the worse it gets.

Shakib should do well to not bite the hand that feeds him.

What do you mean? A cricketer does not have a right to make a living? A talented cricketer can not monetize his own skills in a free market?

We live in a day and age where people will become doctors and lawyers for the money but cricket is now where we draw the line?

Nobody is stopping cricketers from reaping the benefits of capitalism.

But if they are so interested in going after the money (as some clearly are) than they should do everyone
a favor and announce their retirement from international cricket. Prioritizing league cricket over national duty is an absolutely shameless thing to do. If you want to be a T20 mercenary be one, but don't create selection headaches for your cricket board.

Returning to action after serving a one-year ban, Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan is ready to play any role that his IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders expects from him in the upcoming season starting April 9. The Bangladesh superstar, who was part of KKR title-winning campaigns in 2012 and 2014, played just three matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019 before the ban spelt his ouster from the game.

The ICC had banned him for two years, with one year of that sentence suspended, after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC anti-corruption code as he had to learn the lessons the hard way.

Now in his second innings at KKR, Shakib is not averse to open the batting like Sunil Narine or play the role of a finisher, beside bowling those tidy left-arm spin -- to seal his place.

"I'm open to anything to be honest," the 34-year-old, who was bought by his former franchise for Rs 3.2 crore, told PTI in an interview.

Since his ban ended in October last year, he has played only for his domestic side Khulna in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup. "I'm very much confident, it's just that I need one good game to get it going. If I can start well, I think I can do well for the team."

In his last stint for SRH, he only played three matches, while at KKR too he may not be a regular as he's primarily seen as a back-up option for Sunil Narine.

Shakib said it indeed affects the overseas players to sit out in a game but with the options being limited he has to have an open-mind approach.

"There are 8-10 overseas players in each team and only four can play. You cannot blame the team selection. You have to keep an open mind, keep training hard and need to make sure whenever you get a chance, you grab the opportunity with both hands."

In the post-Gautam Gambhir era, KKR have missed playoffs for two years in a row and Shakib hoped things would change this time round"

From outside, you can see it in different ways. This team has grown in last two years. This is the year I think KKR will be able to deliver the performance that fans have been asking for. I'm very much optimistic, KKR will get the result."

KKR also have included veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh to an already strong spin lineup featuring Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy among others.

"We got a very good spin department, having said that we have got a great pace bowling lineup too. All in all, we have got a very good bowling lineup," he concluded.

The two-time champions will kick-start their IPL 2021 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on April 11.

Shakib-al-Hasan is easily one of Bangladesh’s biggest cricketing stars of the last decade. The 34-year old all-rounder – who would be 36 by the time the 2023 World Cup is played – has revealed that he is ready to play the 2027 World Cup – if Bangladesh does not win the upcoming edition.

Shakib was the top star for Bangladesh in the 2019 edition of the World Cup. He amassed 606 runs at a staggering average of 86.57 while also picking 11 wickets, which included a five-for.

In an interview with Daraz, Shakib said: “In the year 2023, it will be my last World Cup. However, if Bangladesh don’t win, I will continue till 2027. I have no plans for retirement as of now. The prospects are open for the time being. When I feel I’m not enjoying the sport anymore, then I will retire. And until the time I feel I am enjoying, I will continue.”

Bangladesh has been having a poor run of form. Recently, on the tour of New Zealand, they lost all six matches (three ODIs and three T20Is).

The Bangladeshi star would be a key member of the Kolkata Knight Riders outfit in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League that starts from April 9. Shakib has been part of both the IPL titles that KKR has won.

Shakib faced the heat recently when he opted to play the cash-rich IPL instead of traveling to Sri Lanka with the national side.

You spend a lot of time laughing at Unadkat, but he has his moments.

Player of the Match today with figures of 4-0-15-3.

Also hit a six towards the end.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has begun investigations into a biosecure bubble breach that took place during a practice session of Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division T20. The matter has gained (BCB) and Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis' (CCDM) attention. According to the board, the BCB and CCDM have taken the matter very seriously and an investigation has been initiated. "We are disappointed to note this incident. Both the CCDM and the BCB has taken this very seriously. The health and safety of our teams, players and officials are most important to us," said CCDM Chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed in an official statement.

"We have invested a significant amount of finances and efforts to make sure the BSE protocols are in place including the best possible accommodation and logistics," he said.

"This incident is being looked into and necessary actions and further precautionary measures will be take," he added.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the incident took place when skipper Shakib Al Hasan was practicing at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and an outsider entered the premises.

Last week, BCB President Nazmul Hassan said he doesn't see "any possibility" of former skipper Shakib playing in the rescheduled Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

The BCB chief cited Bangladesh's busy schedule and T20 World Cup which is slated to take place in India in October as the reasons behind KKR all-rounder Shakib not getting a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board for IPL.
