Needs to average 38.5 in the remaining 4 matches to accomplish this feat. Not easy, but not impossible. Hope he does it. Will be a great achievement. Insha'Allah.

Will be the 8th Pakistani to accomplish it.

do u think he ll end up getting 8k runs

Malik seems to have reinvented himself since his return to the team 2 years ago. Would be nice for him to go out with an aggregate of 7k+ runs with a 36+ avg. @ 80+ SR overall. It's a shame his career had so many ebbs and flows because he is going to end up having a fine career but one which lots will remember to be controversial as well. This run is likely his best ever as a batsman in the team although what really made him a solid ODI player was playing under Inzi & Woolmer. Too bad he wasn't able to sustain it post 2009 till his return in 2015.

I also thought he had the makings of a savy captain too but we all know how that ended.

Anyway, hopefully he can deliver at the WC in 2019.

7k completed
Congratulations

oh still only 7k runs he is there for ages.Even Afridi as a bowling allrounder had 8,000 runs. I think because he was in and out of teams.

Truly a minnow basher now. I really hope we move on from Malik before the WC.

The top 3 and Miandad are the obvious standouts. The rest are a list of "meh" type players, Malik being one of them.

It’s basically the top 3 and the rest were mediocre. Some of the most mediocre guys there are malik Afridi and hafeez

Malik is not that talented player. His fielding stood out . Also he worked hard for whatever he has done.

He will finish as Pakistan's 5th highest scorer in ODIs. Quite decent if you ask me.

Joining the 8000 club seems a bit too much for him right now with all these tough series coming up

Lol.

What a disgrace.

Playing since the 90s, I believe the longest playing international cricketer in the world!

How many matches did he miss? He's been playing for 19 years.

Looking at the averages on that list, and it's clear that even some of our greats have substandard stats.

Our batting heritage is embarrassing to say the least. Of all the major teams, we have comfortably been the worst batting nation historically.

Worst ODI batting nations have easily been England and New Zealand.

It's only in the last few years that we have seen some good ODI batsman from England like Pietersen / Morgan / Root / Bairstow otherwise they had Hick, Stewart, Atherton to look up to. Rubbish.

Same with NZ. In their ODI history they have only produced 2 world class ODI batsmen, Martin Crowe and Kane Williamson.

His comeback is basically the same as his career to date with a minor exemption: prior to his current comeback he would play very well against the lesser teams and do below average against better teams, but he would lift his game against India.
Since his comeback he is pretty much the same, (with the totally predictable poor performances against Australia, England, New Zealand), but has regressed that he is not even able to lift his game vs India.
So in summary prior to comeback malik = hafeez ++
After comeback malik = hafeez

Yousuf came close to 10k runs but he missed that record.

Shoaib Malik will probably retire with 600-700 more runs.

Yousuf was unfairly denied . If he had played few more innings he would have got there . PCB should have given him a chance to get to 10 K runs.

Not as embarrassing as India fast bowling though.

This is why we have historically struggled become a consistent top class team because we have fans, players, administrators championing to play for records rather than playing for the team on merit

Yousuf had his time and no player should be given freeby matches Playing for your country isn’t a right it’s based on merit

Time to drop Malik. His averages are high due to his Not Out's, and he can't be relied upon to score 100s if the team needs it. Doesn't have the quality. Since his comeback he's only made a handful and even at that against poor opposition. He's been AWFUL against top quality opposition (take England, NZ) and we can't deny this. I actually like Malik and think he's a good player, especially T20 player where a quickfire 30 is great for a 20 over game, but for a 50 over game I just don't have the confidence he can produce against the sides we struggle against the most.

He's better than Hafeez though, I can safely say that. But don't think he's of the #4 quality we need. Our top 4 should all be batsmen capable of getting 100s. 3/4 is the case. England have that quality in abundance, even stretching down to 6. It's no wonder why they're #1 in the rankings, and why we gotta look forward, past Malik, before it's too late for the WC19.

Question is, if he performs poorly in the Asia Cup will he be dropped? It will make things easier to just straight swap him with Haris.
