Similarities between 1992 and 2019 | Are we winning again?

I love these number games.
Every time we go into tournament we pak fans come up with similarities between current tournament and our previous triumph.
This time too we have some similarities between 1992 and 2019

1983: winner India
1987: winner Australia
1992: Pakistan ( Pak1st match vs WI )

2011: India
2015: Australia
2019: ------------ ( Pak 1st match vs WI)
Will history repeat again?
 
We never know England is a top team again and we as minnows can upset them would be hilarious if happens

These silly similarities were brought up in the 2015 world cup as well, because that took place in Australia/New Zealand. People were hoping for a repeat of the 1992 road to victory in 2015 as well. That all ended when Rahat Ali dropped Watson in the quarter final and Pakistan crashed out.

When the team is weaker than its counterparts, the last resort is to look at similarities in hope of finding some sort of hope that we can still win the World Cup.

Pakistani team supporter always does these type of useless comparison but in the end, we all have to face humiliation because of our mediocre team.
 
Think I was wearing a green old navy shirt and a blue diaper during our 1992 opening match, will be sure to have them ready this time as well.
 
Fun thread, similar threads come up every wc. However, i believe pak will win this wc, not because of the similiarities of the past but because pak team have a good batting line up for first time in a wc( 1996 batting line was good but this ones better). Yes this bowling line up is one of our weakest. But these days its all about the batting.
 
Some opposites:
1. Batting was weak in 92 had to be rescued by the oldies Imran Miandad and one young Inzy. Batting is strong in 2019 and oldies are the weak points Shoaib and Hafeez. Youngest one I think is Inzy nephew but cannot imagine him hitting 67 off 32 balls or whatever the exact balls to runs ratio was.
2. Lost premier bowler before tourney in Waqar. We didnt lose any bowler to injury in 2019
3. One amazing left warmer in Wasim. One could have been Wasim type bowler but averaging 4 times his avg in last couple years and other left armer more known for 80 to 100 runs off bowling.
4. Bubbly leggie with good Googlie, okay this one we have in 2019.
5. Tournament in Ramadan, okay this is similar but only start ends much later j like 1992 and 2017.
6. Ijaz used to bat number 8 or so and bowl straight easy part timers left arm. This one we have similar guy in Imad.
7. 250+ was winning total, now its 350+.
8. Captain was one of the greatest players of all time. Current captain may be less fit even today compared to him.
 
The last World Cup was the worst when it came to this sort of stuff.

People where pointing even the most insignificant similarities with 1992.

This pak team is superior to the 1992 team. Its probably the best pak team ever, only the 96 team could compete with it. Forget about the recent run of loses, those were just fine tuning this machine. Just get ready for the main event!

nope, I beg to differ.

Batting - yes, though 1975/83 line-ups may come close to this (dont expect same avg on those days as totals were much lower). but on the whole i agree batting could be our best ever especially keeping depth in mind both within the XI as well as even backup (finding it hard to fit in Haris, etc.).

Bowling - completely disagree. We have had much better bowling line-ups both in terms of the experience, skills, average, actual WC performance. Even last world cup the 4 pronged pace attack was better than what we have going into this one. 99 world cup we played most of it with Waqar not even in XI and Shoaib/Wasim leading the attack. Even 96 we had both Ws with other support. 92 was probably similar in caliber but I would argue Wasim alone from that bowling attack we have no match for in this line-up. I can hardly expect someone in this attack to bowl the two balls he bowled to Alan Lamb and Chris Lewis. :wasim

Imran Khan gave Inzamam ul haque a chance during that time. Now Inzi’s nephew Imam Ul Haque will be the Man of the moment. This is predestination.
 
Lead up to 1992, we were one of the top 2 teams in bilateral and tournaments, having won Nehru cup, several sharjah cups and Australasia cup.

Lead to 2019 World Cup, we are one of the bottom 2 teams in ODIs. We just lost our 10th ODI. So I won't count on us winning the cup.

In English Conditions, Pakistan are favourites. Amir’s Bowling will be lethal. He’s the same bowler who made Kohli look like McGrath.

That is my prediction we not winning the cup but I am atleast expecting some wins and some great performances,. So in a fun and encouraging thread no mead to be ultra negative.
 
Lol I loved these from 92 WC and 2015 WC. Jab woh nahi hwa tu why now lol.

But it was funny.

Well said and people forget that about the 1992 team as if we were some minnows that got lucky. We had the best W/L ratio in ODIs behind Australia and won countless multi-lateral tournaments in the years prior.

Whilst this team won the Champions Trophy, we haven't won an ODI series against the top 5 since 2013 in South Africa.
 
If similarities are expected to gurantee repeat results...then if Pakistan win Wc2019....the PM of Pakistan 25 years later will be Sarfaraz. :))

Were unlucky not to win the NZ series in 2018 and SA series this year. Both denied due to rain.

Englands 2019 WC kit is also inspired by the 1992 WC kit. Coincidence? I think not.

England one of the strong contenders to win the cup once again while Pakistan entering the tournament after a flurry of losses.

2019: I'll be watching the matches on TV.

I was 7 years old in 1992 now my son is 7 years old, similarity hainnnnnnnnn :asad2 bas kero bhaiyoon pleaseeeeeeee

This Pakistani team is not good as we were in 1992, but we cannot just ignore that fact that our team is not bad like we had in 2015. We have aggressive batting and very good bowling. Just minor tweaking needed if they can just improve their fielding and not follow batsman every time, they can progress. Just hope for the best In sha Allah we will do good in this WC. Our team was not good before CT too but once we got going we won the cup so dont give up hope easily.
 
Before 1992 Pakistan was known to choke in semi finals. So I don’t think we should discount SA as serious contenders for the World Cup.

People have the right to be hopeful and optimistic. I am no longer interested in raining on people's parade. With time, my desire to be proved right is becoming weaker as well.
 
The reason we look at this stuff is because we aren't confident on our team. I don't see Australia and India looking at stuff like this.

Doesn't seem like banter when I am reading this stuff everytime there is a tournament and every day on other social media.

I don't see Australia or India saying we have a chance in this WC due to past glories. It's because of the teams they have now. I would rather have that than always go on about 92.

Most posts are quite light hearted in this thread to be fair though you get the odd few who are a bit uptight but that is their personality I guess :mv

Those 10 losses are overrated. 1 was against sa, 5 against aus in the UAE and 4 against the mighty England.
Only 3 players from the aus series are playing for pak in the WC. Eng are just too strong. It's not as bad as it looks.
 
We're never winning a world cup until we stop drawing comparisons between 1992 and now.
 
It's sad we've become one of them teams that lives off the past. Like Manchester United is becoming now.

Let's hope the similarities of 92 does not end up being totally opposite. Now that would be a coinsidence or not.

The way things are going, i suspect a repeat of the 2003 ODI WC, our form going into that tournament was wretched and the results showed in that WC with the team failing to qualify for the semis.

This team isn't capable of winning a single match based on talent. The pathetic bowling will be punsihed by each and every team. It's good to be optimistic as few keep saying here but it's bad to be a fool. Yesterday even 15 players couldn't beat a so called minnow side so nothing more left to say. Year 92 had stars like Imran a great leader and Wasim, Inzi the match winners. This team has bowlers averaging 60 and above after CT. The only bowler with an average of 19 dropped in favour of so called x Factor and tested faliure Amir. I agree that Shinwari is erratic but at least can take a wicket or two. Rest everyone has forgotten how to bowl. Hasan Ali practices his celebration more than his bowling these days but has forgotten that to celebrate its important to take wickets. No world class spinner ,because Mickey loves Imad and trust me Imad can't win you matches. All in all this team is a pathetic team and just hope that after getting kicked out of this competition there would be a genuine efforts to rebuild this team.

Just out of interest, did you watch the 92 WC? Pakistan were diabolical in all departments of the game for the 1st half but as is the case with Pakistan, they found their confidence and were champions there after. Pakistan of 92 and 19 need confidence to showpiece their talent.

Give the team a chance to improve, which they will!
