I've watched Sohail Khan doing fielding drills at Lord's and also at Old Trafford and he looks really sluggish. He's a big guy so can be given some benefit of the doubt but he really doesn't look too fit.

Yesterday he and Grant Flower were doing laps around the ground after the day's play and whilst Grant did 6 laps, Sohail was done after 3 and looked shattered.

I guess in a match situation things may be different but he certainly looked quite lethargic in practice.

That's really a shame. He's fought hard to be in the squad and right now the team are crying out for dependable and incisive right arm seamer to displace at least one wayward left armer. He's the closest to that I guess and if his fitness is poor it'll be a massive let down.

Actually he's about 6.4" isn't he? A few strides and the laps done, what's his problem ?

He has more to his bowling than what Wahab has except for lightning pace. He can swing the ball in conditions like these so he can provide us with some early wickets. A better batsman of late as compared to Wahab.

Can't be worse than Rahat...

Then again the likes of Irfan and Tanvir make Rahat look like ABD.

To be fair Rahat seems to have become fairly fit since the boot camp

Not according to the warm up games against counties. But wahab will take a couple of lucky wickets by sheer stamina to run in all day. I've yet to see the new improved sohail so will reserve judgement though it would be very handy to have a right armer to balance things out.

Getting a free vacation in England, doesn't have it in him to bowl more than 15 overs in a day.

He is good only for shorter formats , never was convinced that he could play tests. The way he runs in to bowl you get the idea that he can't last all day on the field.

Should be replaced in the squad by :

Ali Imran Pasha,

Amad Butt,

Sadaf Hussain,

Shehzad Azam Rana,

Mir Hamza

Or

Hasan Ali.

Before the fitness camp Imran Khan had a fitness test at NCA and he passed the test with Average Score.

" Younus Khan, Anwar Ali, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Sami Aslam received perfect fitness reports whereas one-day international captain Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Asad Shafiq, Junaid Khan, Rahat Ali and Imran Khan were declared average players. "

Don't think he'll be all that in Tests but an absolute crucial modern ODI bowler with plenty to offer.

Hope so. We will need him. With the spanking our seamers are getting I'm sure we are gonna lose one or two to injury before test series is over.

Struggling

Couldn't Management see that he is not fit enough?

His body builders physique is useless if at best he operates at 78-81 mph mostly.

he has just never been fit enough to play cricket. His Media buddy has been focusing on his shoulders and physique for 9 years and claiming that he is fast bowler (purely out of desire for having a karachi based fast bowler in team) but he never had the fitness of a cricketer. Not to forget he is easily 3-4 years older than his age of 32 so that makes him around 35-36

I have been following him since domestic season 07 and was anxiously waiting for his debut in early 2008. I was as anxiously anticipating for his international arrival as I was for fawad alam.

Realized very quickly that they were myths created by Karachi media, ex cricketers....do not think I have been proven wrong.

looks about 40, took wickets in the first innings because england hadn't seen a right armer all series nothing more

Considering the most reason we heard about Afridi's forging age was that "Oh he is Pathan and Pathans always look 5+ years older than their age" That is what we heard when he busted on the scene with age claimed at 16.

I would not be extremely surprised that he is at least 5 years older than his age of 32. His endurance/stamina is definitely of someone around 36+.

Is Ammad better bowling option than Yamin?

Is Ammad better bowling option than Yamin?
100 %.

Amad is fast medium and 6'1 6'2

Yamin is medium fast 5'6 5'7

But Amad is a 1st change bowler uptil now. And he is an Allrounder.

As a bowler only Hasan is ahead of him as far as performances are concerned. But Hasan is short in height.

Amad should be in Test squad vs Australia. In Australia you need Tall Pacers who can cross 140 kph.

Fit enough to do a Sajda. Last time he did Sajda against India, Pakistan lost the game :)
Give him a break.

He is 32. Always had a stiff body naturally. Twice or thrice he had stress fractures of the back. He was seriously quick in his debut Fc season. 10 years have passed by and lots of injuries and Stiff body.

Panjay lagana against India or England is not at all easy in any format. Shows that he has got skill. But his Test Career is surely over because of Age & fitness while he can play Odi & T20 Cricket for 2 or 3 years max. Odi's too only if he reduces his weight further and improves his fitness with hard training. Because spell 2 and spell 3 or 4 need fitness which enables you to sustain pace.

Should not be picked for Odi squad with this fitness otherwise his career will be over in a flash.

One must not forget his crucial Fivefer where he bowled extremely well.

There's no point doing press ups in the first innings if you're not even fit enough to bowl quicker than an Indian trundler in the second innings.

Did u see him bowl in the televised match ?

He was indeed touching 150 kph. Bowled deadly yorkers & bouncers. Scared batsman. It was all about Speed than and less about swing. Swing dominated speed in last 3-4 years.

16 wickets in fc game and having best fc figures in Pak Domestic history is No Joke and no media blessing.

His combo of Fc & List A SR is in top 3 of current Pak Domestic bowlers which tells that he is a strike bowler, a wicket taker.

Yes Fitness is v poor not due to body building. That's a typical Fata built. He has always had a stiff body compared to others and has had 2-3 stress fractures of Back. Naturally at 32 you expect to see this than.

Sohail is just another Tanvir Ahmed.

Don't know about Tanvir Ahmed but he kinda looks like Sohail Tanvir.

-

And back to the OP, he's a big guy so not surprised that his fitness isn't that great, he's just going to have to work on it.

In hindsight it looks stupid, but he felt good after his 5-for and enjoyed the moment there and then.

Needs to be dropped. Someone who can't get through the 5 days can't play, no matter what his performance may be. Instead, bring in Imran Khan as Rahat Ali seems to be improving a bit.

This isn't a matter of fitness. He's got more mass than his frame can carry and most of it in the wrong places.

Sohail Khan was grunting hard and still was bowling in mid 70's at the end of England's 1st innings. Man was clearly tired and had no stamina to bowl anymore. Glad that he got the 5 wicket haul.

As expected he is taken to the cleaners in 2nd innings. He looks like an ODI or T20 bowler. Not Test standard.

Much, much fitter for a 36/37 years old man. At his age, Lillee, Marshall & Holding had retired 1/2 years back.

He played few ODI against us & one of the BD players told me that Sohail was banging bat one of the hardest he has ever played. The same player had played Sohaib, Sami, Jerome Taylor, Jermaine Lawson, Brett Lee (albeit in 2006), Zak, Malinga & probably Bond as well.

Those ODI's were 7/8 years ago, when Sohail was 28/29, sorry 23/24.

Yep, looked harmless second innings, aka back to form the way he is giving width to be smashed. Not the blessing his fans make him out to be. But we don't have many other options.

Fit enough to get a 5fer and potentially repeat his heroics after a good nights rest and hearty plate of Brums Magic Biryani!

He can't even last 3 days. What the hell happened here who decided he was fit before putting him in the team.

Pakistan entire fast bowling unit needs an overhaul and a needs a new vision of what kind of players we need.

they didnt have sohail as an option for many years, is he the top wicket taker in domestic FC season before getting selected for this all important english tour.. from the aus series in UAE'14 ehsan adil, junaid khan and talha have been rotated as the backup pacers, and IK was the second pacer and not even Wahab riaz (until the watson over)... now IK has yet to play in this series...

The thing I don't understand is how England gifted him 5 wickets - should be dropped next match.

Every expert is talking about how much of a lulloo he has looked 2nd innings. No pace, nothing, just laboring along. Is this what he learned in army camp? Can do 1 handed pushups but can't play the 2nd innings.

I still stand by the fact that Ehsan Adil should've played this series. At least he can last the whole game.

I believe Sohail Khan should be dropped from Test squad due to his fitness. But saying England gifted him wickets is totally ridiculous. He earned those wickets with his amazing bowling.

Bowlers like Rahat, Wahab, Amir should learn from him that how to make a good use of pitch, conditions and the best of all, your brain.

Apart from the Hales wicket, I don't there was any other ball which was due to good bowling rather than poor batting.

Clearly not

And if I'm not wrong it's his first competitive match for ages too

Looked a lot better yesterday.

It wasn't a bad spell from him this morning. Although he wasn't at top pace, still a decent effort.

Yep I did. Those days I was much much more of an avid follower of the game than I now am.

I had another reason to look forward towards him playing and that reason was that shoaib akhtar drama's were at its peak in 2006-07 and sami was a disappointment So when the Geo media started creating hype for Sohail so I got super excited by the idea that we have a possibility of another express speed bowler. So I waited anxiously for his debut.

NO he was never any of what you mentioned. Never Express...I think his first wicket was a yorker to some Zimb guy but even that was more accurate yorker than an express yorker...His pace was not express by any mean and he was mostly a mid 130's (over 90 % of time) and very very very rarely he got up in 138+ so by no stretch of imagination an express fast bowler.

If anything, His FC record that season and even after is Indicative of the level of FC cricket demise. The domestic season of 07-08 gave us batting geniuses like Khuram Manzoor, Khalid Latif, Fawad Alam ( All played for Pak within 6 months between late 07, early 08 ) So you can understand what those standards were.

Hmmm...you are confused in what cricket-fit and what is someone with broad shoulders etc.

DKL and RH both (by the time they retired ) had bowled over 18K and close to 22K deliveries at test level. Their overall first class + International cricket deliveries were probably over 50K each. Denise played domestic cricket for about 4-5 years after retirement and went on to play the first tour game (I think Lilac hill game) for every team that toured australia even almost 20 years after his retired. So I think your comparison for Sohail's fitness and DKL/RH fitness is a bit off.

Despite all the grunting

He can't bowl over 130 in this spell

#embarrassing

Morning spell was acceptable but later spells were a struggle for him.

I'd say he needs to work on his fitness, but perhaps it's too late for him.

His fitness has been shockingly poor in this match and it's not helped the team after his 1st spells in both inns, if he can't improve his fitness levels then he won't be playing to much test cricket going forward

Sohail should end up on the same platform with Sir Hadlee - pace bowler with a 5fer in his last Test.

More than anyone, I am sure he has scared Arthur. Mickey has got a high paid job & he would love to keep that - now, when he would think that, this guy is the "fitness fanatic" in PAK team & this is after the SSG style training, must be feeling something chilly in his spine on his future course of action.

His fitness is a disgrace. Should stick to odis if he can't improve his fitness

Ok.. Sohail Khan picking up 91 wickets in a season was a myth created by Karachi media. Sohail Khan clocking fastest ball in Sprite Speed competiton was also a myth. Fawad Alam averaging above 50 in domestic is also a myth. Can you name his media buddy who didn't do his work properly ?

Then you watched him enough, do some research.

Sohail Khan really has no stamina.

Built like a tank, bowls like Vinay Ko-mar.

You dont get gifted five fers at this level.

C'mon, guy might not be fit but why are some people here almost gleefully piling into him? He's done decent enough this match all things considered. No need to claim that his success was fluked when he earned it through good bowling.

Sohail Khan.....how fit is he?

He bowls well consistent line and around 84mph in his first spell after that he is all downhill.

He bowled well on first day and since than he is just down hill. If he is not injured or something he is absolutely unfit for Test cricket and Pakistan 4 bowler strategy cant bear him.

The majority of his wickets have been handed to him by English batsmen and frankly speaking he's unfit, leaks runs and will get found out after this Test by the English analysts.

He is a liability for the test team despite the 6 wickets

You're left with 3 bowlers after Sohail Khan bowls his first spell.

Sohail khan is the same place I am from and he is known to be a tikka karai lover. My cousin who is in england now use to play with him on the same village team said he was always the most skillful bowler but when it cames to being a professional sportsman. he was at the bottom of the team in that regard.

That sums it up.

And also the knowledge that no matter what...you will have some people in media and ex cricketers who will always be rooting for you...why do you need to work hard? Why do you need to act like/make improvements like a professional?

Unfortunately - He is NOT only one with that mentality.

He almost has the same tally of his wickets as champion Amir has had in the entire series..
And he got them after one game loll..

Sad that Pakistani fast bowling has all come down to this guy.

He wasn't in that army camp afaik

Again trundling at 120-130 kph. Even gave a bouncer at that pace and got smashed for 4.

Just bowled 145 kph followed by a 130 kph pie. He has the ability to bowl fast, but I don't think his fitness lets him maintain his speed.
