South Africa came agonizingly close to T20 World Cup glory in 2024, losing heartbreakingly in the final. Nine of the 15 squad members from that campaign return, with hopes of going one step further this time. The journey since Barbados hasn’t been easy — South Africa have lost 20 of 32 T20Is since July 2024, often fielding sides that weren’t at full strength.
The team has also bid farewell to Heinrich Klaasen, who retired from international cricket. However, Dewald Brevis has stepped in as a reliable replacement, and Quinton de Kock has been in sensational form since reversing his ODI retirement. With a settled top-order led by captain Aiden Markram and de Kock, and a formidable pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi, South Africa remain one of the strongest sides in the tournament. They come in with confidence after a 2-1 home series win against the West Indies.
South Africa play three of their four group matches in Ahmedabad, where the tracks are expected to favour high scoring. They will aim to get accustomed to the conditions early as they target a deep run.
For Canada, competing in their second T20 World Cup, it’s about testing themselves against the hierarchy. New captain Dilpreet Bajwa leads the side, with former skipper Nicholas Kirton also in the mix. Despite losing both warm-up matches to Italy and Nepal, Canada possess enough firepower to challenge stronger teams.
Experience comes from Saad Bin Zafar, Jaskaran Singh, and Navneet Dhaliwal, while Bajwa and Yuvraj Samra bring youthful energy. The opening day showed the Associates are no pushovers, and Canada will aim to continue that trend.
