South Africa came agonizingly close to T20 World Cup glory in 2024, losing heartbreakingly in the final. Nine of the 15 squad members from that campaign return, with hopes of going one step further this time. The journey since Barbados hasn’t been easy — South Africa have lost 20 of 32 T20Is since July 2024, often fielding sides that weren’t at full strength.

The team has also bid farewell to Heinrich Klaasen, who retired from international cricket. However, Dewald Brevis has stepped in as a reliable replacement, and Quinton de Kock has been in sensational form since reversing his ODI retirement. With a settled top-order led by captain Aiden Markram and de Kock, and a formidable pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi, South Africa remain one of the strongest sides in the tournament. They come in with confidence after a 2-1 home series win against the West Indies.

South Africa play three of their four group matches in Ahmedabad, where the tracks are expected to favour high scoring. They will aim to get accustomed to the conditions early as they target a deep run.

For Canada, competing in their second T20 World Cup, it’s about testing themselves against the hierarchy. New captain Dilpreet Bajwa leads the side, with former skipper Nicholas Kirton also in the mix. Despite losing both warm-up matches to Italy and Nepal, Canada possess enough firepower to challenge stronger teams.

Experience comes from Saad Bin Zafar, Jaskaran Singh, and Navneet Dhaliwal, while Bajwa and Yuvraj Samra bring youthful energy. The opening day showed the Associates are no pushovers, and Canada will aim to continue that trend.

Squads:

South Africa

Go, Canada. :dav

Anyway, I hope QDK will do well. I have him in my fantasy XI team (he is the captain).

There is no reason South Africa shouldn't crush Canada considering their line-up and the conditions.

South Africa fly under the radar radar when it comes to bottling it against these teams.

Pakistan are not as bad as SA when it comes to such matches

South Africa almost gave Nepal their first win in 2024 aswell. That was even closer than yesterday’s game.

I don't really know too much about Canada. They seem to have faded after the glory days of Jim Davids, Rizwan Cheema and Balaji Rao.

Rizwan could have played this World Cup for Canada had he been smart and saw the writing on the wall.

. How can you both forget England's defeat against Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup? :kp
I was talking specifically about T20 World Cups

But yeah, they lost to Zimbabwe in 1992 , Ireland and Bangladesh in 2011, Bangladesh in 2015 and Afghanistan in 2023 in ODI World Cups as well :kp

Yes. That was the peak of Canadian cricket --> 2003-2011.

Once those players retired, the new guys weren't as good.

Rizwan Cheema was a good hitter.

Another one of those utterly useless matches. Not sure what this is achieving.
Nobody’s forcing you to watch it. The point is giving Associate teams real exposure - playing top sides, in big tournaments, under pressure so they can improve. If the World Cup only existed for the same 6–8 teams, it wouldn't be a World Cup.

Agree.

Apart from the Nep v Eng matches I’m actually bored so far. Had a week off work and got all the sh.t matches.

Instead I’ve actually enjoyed the newly bcb arranged oddomo BD t20 cup which was live on youtube, consists of 3 teams made up of national team players, national team in/around/fringe players and future players. Today was the final and both teams scored 200plus but national team players won fizz defended 15 off the last over.

These Canada, USA, Oman, etc teams are so useless. Full of Indian and Pakistani. I rather give home grown players team a chance than these guys ... Some of these guys can't even pronounce the name of the country they are playing for properly lol

The first 2 days were pretty interesting. Almost all of them could have gone either way

Nah they are a level above the Oman and UAE teams. I believe these guys are citizens.

We have 4 different types of associates - the real deal - Nepal, PNG, Namibia.

then white ex-pat XI - Netherlands, Italy

Then desi passport holders - US, Canada

Then tier 4 - desis who don't have passports - UAE, OMAN

Tier 4 probably shoudn't be actual international teams.

150 is up for Canada.

I think Canada did great with the bat. Reaching 150 against likes of Rabada, Ngidi, Jansen, and Maharaj.

Canada showed alot of spine with the bat. I was honestly expecting them to get rolled over by the South African quicks. A strong, confidence-building performance by the Canucks.

South Africa began their T20 World Cup campaign in dominant fashion, registering a comprehensive 57-run win over Canada in Ahmedabad.

While associate nations have troubled several top teams in the opening days of the tournament, the Proteas — 2024 runners-up and among the leading contenders alongside co-hosts India — faced no such difficulties.

Batting first, South Africa posted the highest total of the competition so far, piling up 213 for 4. Captain Aiden Markram led from the front with a well-crafted 59, supported by Quinton de Kock’s 25 and Ryan Rickelton’s 35. David Miller and Tristan Stubbs provided a strong finish, remaining unbeaten on 39 and 34 respectively.

Canada’s chase got off to the worst possible start as Lungi Ngidi removed skipper Dilpreet Bajwa with the opening delivery. Ngidi struck twice more in his second over, leaving Canada struggling at 26 for 3.

Navneet Dhaliwal showed commendable resilience, adding 69 runs with Harsh Thaker, but Canada could only manage 156 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.

The victory lifts South Africa to the top of Group D alongside New Zealand, who also won their opening match against Afghanistan.

South Africa will face Afghanistan in their next fixture on Wednesday in Ahmedabad, while Canada are set to take on the United Arab Emirates on Friday.
