What's new

South Africa [488 & 344/6d] defeat Australia [221 & 119] by 492 runs to win 4th Test; Win series 3-1

Australia are just going through the motions in the final test.

Probably can't wait for the series to end. Are there ODIs to play?

They are sunk if this is the XI they have to play and Paine has to captain.

In test cricket, that is.

South Africa and Australia no longer play a full tour against each other. Only Tests, ODI's are played at a later date.

Similar to India and Australia then. Those two have also 'de-linked' their ODI and LoI legs.

What a shot by Bavuma, pasting Hazelwood to all corners of the ground like club bowler.

Australians wana go home for sure... Nothing is working for them

If the ball reversing? :kp

Just looked at the scorecard, apparently Makram was striking at 70, wow.

He didn't seem to be doing anything out of the ordinary, no risky singles or shots. Impressive.

I wouldn't have classified his knock as aggressive, but apparently it was. It didn't look that way at all. Great testament to the young man.

Just looked at KP's knock against SA 2nd Test at Leeds 2012 in comparison.
His 149 came at 69 and I thought that innings was aggressive.
What makes an innings aggressive?

I suppose in its relation to the current ebb and flow of the game. A recent example would be AB's counter attacking against India, in my mind anyway.

I think it will be fair to say that SA won't lose this match now, which means, they will win this series 2-1 or a 3-1.

Poor shot Maharaj, Bavuma is six short of a well deserved century. A bit of thinking would have sufficed, then again we went complaining when he was pasting bowlers all over.

Yeah, I agree. But how would we classify Makram's innings? Aggressive/semi aggressive /normal?

Striking at 70 in Tests is very aggressive, that's 4 runs an over. Yet aggression is not the first word that comes to mind when describing that knock.

5-er for Cummins, disappointment for Bavuma. Faf's in danger of becoming a specialist captain, needs to get runs in the next series

I remember Faf was dropped momentarily after similar scores on that horrendous tour of India.

Khawaja has a point to make here. Averages 24 away and 60 at home.

Then again with Smith, Warner and Bancroft out and the only other experienced batsman being Shaun Marsh hes going to keep his spot anyway.

He did nothing other than that 6-fer and that too was on a devilish pitch . Was very poor.

Fair enough. Only 9 wickets at an avg of 32. I got confused with Cummins in that final test. Cummins bowled well in that one.

Bowlers like Hazelwood are the worst.. they just run in and drop the ball in the exact same spot every ball :livid:

Philander is a monster with the new ball, you won't see a more skilful bowler in world cricket. Devastating!

Morkel back to bowling his rubbish.
What's so difficult in finding consistency across matches?
Watching a 34 year old veteran bowling like a nervous 12 year school girl is infuriating.

Still almost 200 to avoid follow-on. Unless weather threat, don't think SAF will enforce though.

Why not? Think it wont be too tough to get this lineup all out under 200-220 again.

If AUS bats for another 50 overs tomorrow, then following on means non stop bowling for 3 days for 4 bowlers. There is no extra point for Innings win; if AUS indeed gets all-out for say 250, by tea, my hunch is SAF will bat again for 2.5 sessions and set something like 500 in 140 overs.

5 down - if Aussies return back before lunch tmro, then no point indeed not to enforce follow-on; they won't last till Day 4, 2nd time.

I understand that. But one would feel it is easier to run through this side. There is no one with a tag of "world class" in their batting dept.

Btw, batting till tea looks tough now. 6 down!

Congratulations Saffers on your first ever series win at home against OZ. Completely outplayed 'Straya in this series.

Australia completely lost confidance...they simply handover match to SA..and fly back to australia 3 days early...and practice for IPL

Australia just want to get out of South Africa.

They are missing their top 4 players as well. Only Test that they won Strac was MoM, while Bancroft was their top scorer in this series.

Might not last till tea 2nd time ... :(

Australian batting will struggle without Smith and Warner.

Yeah that's what I meant. For as long as I have watched, they struggled against Australia at home .

Understandable.

Just correcting:- it is first ever series win for SA against Aus at home since readmission.
