Pitch is deteriorating with uneven bounce. How fit are our bowlers though?
 
With two and a half bowlers for fourth innings, can't blame SA's go slow approach. They would not want their tired bowlers to bowl for two days.

Markham and Elgar can also toss some pies. Faf used to in the old days (considering he knows how to tamper a ball he can also spin a ball).
 
Our players never get to feast as other players do in their conditions, I see no problem whatsoever padding your stats when you're in a winning position and can't lose the series. We have the toughest conditions in the world, it's not very often we play 4 Tests or more.

Only problem is when SC teams use to do the same...lot of non SC fans and experts use to criticize a lot!

After Kumble become coach, team Ind has moved on from personal milestone craze a bit. Also thanks to :kolhi2

When the likes of Amla where at their absolute peak, they played two or three Test series.

Our players don't capitalise at the height of their powers as other international players, hence they average in the low 50. They then have to come back and bat in these devil conditions.

I don't think a South African player has ever scored 500 runs in a series. (Maybe Smith with back to back double tons, but that's it)

In last 5 years more Test 100s have been hit in SA (51) than in India (41)!!

Batting average of top 7 of all teams in Tests in SA is 35.5, in India it is 36.8.

SL (35.04), WI (34.9) and Eng (34.6) have been tougher for batting compared to SA :P

No, subcontinent players are criticised for being ordinary outside their conditions. A lot of them leave Asia with averages of 50+. Arrive in SENA countries and average in the low 30, not only that but they hardly win. Whereas SENA countries go to Asia and not only score runs but win as well.

Last time SA lost 4-0 in Ind, in return Ind lost 2-1. AUS lost 3-0 in SL, Eng and NZ too lost in India :19:

Those are misleading stats in any case. We get to play teams that are used to our conditions and are currently strong/decent.
India has no equals in Asia at the moment, Pakistan was the only strong side before Misbhah and YK retired. In any case runs per wicket in SA are still on the lower side.

We've never lost 4-0 in India.
Historically SENA countries are better tourist.
What is the W/L ratio of those countries in Asia since SA readmission and vice versa. And series wins.
Also how many bats from SENA average 50 in Asia and how many Asian bats average 50 in SENA (Min 500). That should provide clarity as to why Asian bats get criticized.

Unless Rabada is injured as well. So we have two fit bowlers, Vern and Maharaj.

SA lost 3-0 last time, one match was washout in Bangalore :19:

Agree history is good w.r.t. SENA, certainly things are improving for SC teams ... also without :smith AUS will struggle more in next 1 year, for SA :amla is on last leg !

Aus missed quality bowler in this test. Hazlewood picked 0 wickets lyon offcolor and sayers is not looking international level bowler. Only Pat cummins is looking great bowler from aus side. Their batting is horror already with Smith, Warner and Bancroft banned.

The problem with this pitch is that the turn is true and consistent. So Majaraj will not automatically run through Australia.

I hope he works on his arm ball. If a few could straighten and not turn then Australia will have a tough time. But everything is turning square and the bounce is consistent. We need variable bounce to run through them without destroying our bowlers.
 
South Africa can rack up 1000.

Bavuma can finally get century #2.
 
We have to find a way to incorporate an all rounder in the side. We desperately need one.

Three bowlers and a spinner is very dangerous when one bowler breaks down. When all three are injured however? At least an all rounder and a spinner could trundle along with a few part timers. Need a Kallis somehow.

We keep critisizing SENA bowlers who feast and pad up averages on bowling friendly SENA pitches :19:

Is that even an answer?

Yes SENA bowlers pad up numbers, but they win in the subcontinent in any case. Twice won in Lanka and Pakistan, once in India with a few series draws. That's not exactly not performing. Australia and England have been decent as well.

But let's let the numbers do the talking. I'm still waiting, or should I not hold my breath?

Slightly better bat than Collingwood then. Anyone who can average 40-42 with the bat. His bowling average is immaterial, so long as he can go at less than three an over and deliver 10-15 overs a day. Should not be too hard to find.

You want hear praise from SC fans, it's open fact SENA teams did well in SC as per history (hope I said this in my earlier post, repeating again bro HAPPY Now).

I don't see any experts agreeing to the fact that SENA bowlers are padding up averages with friendly home pitches ...like we agree about SC batters weakness in SENA pitches.
 
Sharp turn once again, but the damn bounce is consistent. When will this pitch start misbehaving? Hasn't been hot enough over the last four days I guess, I see no cracks whatsoever.
 
This series lost a lot of steam since warner and smith were banned, haven't followed a single ball of this last test, the interest level is simply not there
 
This is getting ridiculous. Aus would be chasing over 600. It is reaching a run rate of 5 if Faf declared at tea. Personally I hope the game is washed out to prove what an idiot the Proteas coach and captain both are.

On Easter weekend don't have much else to do except watch 4th test. I was hoping it would be finished today so I could see the presentations (back at work tomorrow on 5th day).

Probably this has to do with the injuries. They want to give their bowlers as much rest as possible. And also waiting for the pitch to deteriorate further so it helps Maharaj?

But the likes of Steyn, Pollock and Donalds who are classified as greats have gone there and not only bowled well, but have won matches and series in alien conditions with virtually no support from spinners. That's no one mocks these guys, they are match winners. There's other bowlers to like McGrath and Gillespie. Even the likes of Jimmy have been decent and won matches in tough places.

The issue with subcontinent bats is that they lose their match winning abilities. They don't often tour and have monstrous tours on a consistent basis. Think of Amla in India a few years back or England. Cook in Australia. I know Kohli had a huge tour of Australia with 4 hundreds in a tour, but those are few and far in between.

SENA bats often have 60+ averages on tour consistently in any conditions. That's why they tend to win more. Their bowlers often have enough to bowl at. We don't see that enough with subcontinent bats. A 40+ average is celebrated, a 50 is seen as a success. But you need someone to average 60+ to win away consistently.

Last test at Wanderers had a pitch which was unplayable from day one. This one is still a good one and we are approaching 5th day.

I am a Saffer but personally I don't believe in suffocating a team (totally playing them out of the game or be bullying). I am aware of the injury issues we are having. For Aus to get a 420 score it would be a world record so why set them over 600?

Needs to score runs on lively tracks as well though. I'm yet to see a ton similar Rahane at Lords or Root in Johannesburg, even at home he hasn't scored on tough tracks. It's been mainly Pujara dogging it out on tough tracks. He has a great opportunity this year in England and Australia. These are his peak years. A similar tour to Australia as the last one with no Smith and Warner will be more than enough to win there.

Australia won a match when the series was still alive. Even in this match the series was not a forgone conclusion. They are missing four of their top players. Didn't bowl well in the first innings.

Australia came here to try and bully us and get on top of us. They wanted South Africa to mentally disintegrate. And it backfired badly.

I'd say Australia performed better imo, it took a Rabada spell to turn this series around. They comprehensively won the first Test. Survived a swinging deck in PE. Just when they were looking to consolidate a position of dominance Rabada turned the series on its head. And an AB special of course.

It was the third Test that Australia completely fell apart. Not any stage did it look like India were in a winning position during the first two Tests. Lost 7 wickets under 100 runs in three innings out of four IIRC of the first two Tests.

This series however has been anti climatic. But we'll take it, Australia bought on themselves.

I'm referring to monumental knocks, he did play well. But it's not at the same level as Root or Rahane's knocks. I want to see similar knocks at home/Asia as well. Nothing wrong with consolidating positions of dominance though.

Agreed, IIRC all the commentary panel were saying scoring 50 on that joke of 3rd test pitch is as good as scoring 100 elsewhere.

Mediocre players shouldn't be dropping catches imo. Should be a gun fielder at the very least.

What guarantee is there that SA didn't tamper with the ball after lunch in PE?

I can only go by results and evidence. SA got the ball to reverse in Durban as well. Key difference is that we don't have a bowler with a slinging arm.

If it's any consolation this match is boring as ####, but the anticipation of a first series win against Australia just about makes it bearable. There was no boring moment in the Indian series, including the third Test. It was all about cricket. Happy?

We've been woeful, don't know how this guy has an average below 30. He's had nothing to bowl at and no conditions either.

Farmers sake that flew over. Morkel is bowling well, full and straight. Why couldn't he bowl like this all his career, with a mean yorker.
