So this should be over well before the end of first session, honours even then in this series.

Standard India Overseas Test scorecard. 10 overs 20 runs 5 wickets
At this rate these guys will be all out in 15 overs

I hope rahane plays a big one here and shows that he belongs at this level!

So having a test match which produced a total of 232 runs for him in a single test is enough for you to offset all other failures of him in every subsequent series there? For me, it is not, especially from someone of his class and abilities.

No. But I do not base my opinion on stats. For any player.

While Dravid had one big series in Australia, he also had an important role to play in the following series (Sydneygate fame) though it may not show up in overall averages. For instance, he top scored in our victory at Perth and almost batted us to safety in Sydney.

Sourav Ganguly's overall average of 36 in SA may not appear great but he was clearly our best batsman on the tour to SA that represented his comeback.

I am sure there are enough such instances one can pick for Tendulkar or Laxman or multiple other players. Having watched all these players over their entire careers, I just know that Dravid and Tendulkar had what it took technically and mentally to do well in all conditions. There were phases when Dravid was the most important wicket and there were others when Tendulkar was most important. Specific performances are a function of what phase of their careers (good / middling / poor form) they played their matches in these conditions.

Probably because the discussion did veer towards that when you said that an out of form Dravid's form is far more important than an out of form Tendulkar's form or something to that effect.

And where exactly did I say this?

How many teams send first choice starters on 'A' tours?
Go and sue BCCI then for committing this heinous crime against humanity.

A very good declaration from Sth Africa A.... their are 78 overs left with RR below 3.5. Looks like India A is playing the Run Rate and gave away those 5 vital wickets

Rahane is a good player but he isn't mentally strong enough for international cricket from what I've seen :khawaja

He surely hasn't done enough in the chances he has got so far. But it is early days. He has another opportunity here. His fate is in his hands.

It is a pity we lost all those wickets upfront ...especially Pujara's run out. A 4th day wicket in SA cannot hold too many ghosts for Indian batsmen who know how to play late. Now, barring a miracle, this match is over as a contest and we are left with tracking individual performances.

We have knocked off 1/6th of the target. Count it down in 10s boys.

Rahane gets his 50!well played!now go on and get a really big one:)
India A 76/5

Saha showing yet again he is a far better choice than useless Karthik for the 2nd WK slot.

very good 50 by Rahane :14:

better than those tons on flat track in first Test.

hoping he makes it count and secures his place for SA tour

A assume Karthik too would be in his '30s or thereabouts.

I heard a lot of good things about Sanju Samson but obviously he is not yet 18 I guess.

He also represented some Indian second string side. Saw him @IPL. Good fearless stroke playing. He was found out against Ausie and African bowlers but i was stilkl impressed. Surely we will be seeing more of him in coming years unless.
Is he a wk?

Unbelievable how South African national team is so good, yet the A team is mediocre, I can see them losing their number 1 place once the next generation start playing, how awful are they?
Some humble pie perhaps?

We don't need to replace the entire playing XI, just need the odd replacement here and there. Beuran Hendricks for example has shown enough promise to perform at a higher level. So it's ok if the second team is rubbish, as long as there are 3 or 4 guys capable of playing for the national team.

From what I heard about him, he is a WK.

As KIC stated he has got many more chances at many more levels since that test. That he couldn't capitalize on to them, is his folly alone. He needs to understand that he won’t get too many chances especially seeing the flurry of batsmen coming through ranks.

Further on Delhi test, its not his failures which rankle us so much, it’s the manner in which he was dismissed, showed a complete lack of belongingness to this level, looked like he simply doesn’t have temperament for this level. I’d love to be proved wrong though on this.

Lets see what he does today.
Albeit in 'A' game only, happy to be proved wrong so far.

Just hope he continues to bat today.

On what basis should Rahane be given a chance? Has he done anything of note since the time he choked twice in Delhi test?

And lol what a criteria to pick your openers for a test series against best team in world and that too in their own den? I don't think situation is that bad in Indian cricket.

Yeah u r right there r quite a few young talented bats back home and few more coming thru at U19 n U23 level. So it just needs careful management of talent, the reason being most young players from India dont come readymade for greentops that too against against Steyn n company. There will have to be some period of evolution allowed for any young opener tried to c whether he can grow to that standard given the time n exposure. Vijay in my mind hasnt really played a lot on greentops so we are yet to be fully convinved that he can or cant. In GGs case we more or less know his strengths n weaknesses so there isnt a question of blooding him to give exposure rather more of him regaining form and demonstrating it on the weight of runs. Playing someone totally new to intl cricket in SA tests as opener might be too much of a risk and asking too much of a youngster, since the guy hasnt even been exposed to test match quality attack on subcontinent wickets and if he fails the difficult tests on a greentop then he is dropped since he failed to make an impression in debut series then its also not doin justice to talent.

I see that a lot of PPers, led by a supposedly Kiwi, started celebrating too soon assuming this match is done and dusted after India were 17/5.

Anyway, on the brighter side, with the innings Saha is playing, Karthik should be thrown out of not just the team but from the plane enroute India.

It's India A+ don't party too hard ;-)

OT: Rahane has surely booked his ticket to SA now

Pretty good recovery.. Good to see Rahane playing positively after a looong time

India A actually have a pretty decent shot at winning this.. this pair needs to get close though. If these 2 get to 240, Binny and Rasool might be able to help India cross over the line, would be terrific come back that.

edit..

and never mind.. Rahane just got out :))

Inning gets over in exactly the same manner it started... But when i thought A side will be definitely bundled within 50 runs , final score doesnt look that bad

Rahane was always a good prospect but the real question is can he translate that first class form to international cricket.

Just curious would Indian fans prefer an Indian A win here or Pakistani loss?
