What's new

South Africa defeat Ireland by 206 runs in Only ODI

Absolutely awful. Team full of black african players who don't even merit a spot in the domestic sides because of unfair quotas. Yes, Rabada is good. But half these guys, including Bavuma and Phangiso would never walk into sides.

Could see 500 here.

Bowl first on a belter, crap fielding and far too many short balls.

Almost like this has happened in every single game vs a FM this year

Speaks a bit about Bavumas selection when this is only his 2nd one day 50 in the last 6 years (41 games). Fair play to him for taking his chance though.

I notice for that LBW review they checked where the ball pitched before checking for the edge, presumably part of the new system?

John Anderson is really poor and he is 33 too.

Hope Ireland can find some better players. Miss the times when they had guys like mooney, Johnston etc. They were pretty decent bowlers unlike the current bunch.

Mooney/Cusack et al wouldnt have made any difference IMO. Handy disciplined medium pacers we;ve got loads of, problem is the faster bowlers we have e.g Chase/Young are young and ill disciplined with line and length.

Worse is we bowl first every damn game. We suck at bowling, but if we bat first I know when we turn up we can get scores of 240-270 vs the top sides, which is respectable. We'd probably lose but it'd at least be closer, for whatever reason we've become obsessed with chasing which leaves our batsmen facing absolutely impossible tasks.

Of all our games vs FM's this year, not one of them we could've won bar the first ODI vs SL where we needed 80 off 60 with 10 overs left and 5 wickets, very much in the game, but we fell away. Every other match we've needed 7 an over from the get go which is just impossible and sets us up to fail. Our batsmen if left alone can do a job, but we always bowl first which completely negates this and screws us over.

Ireland really have declined a lot in the last few years. No new players coming through. Is Irish cricket dead?

No, we're just paying the price for not having any A system whatsover and having the blood several young players at once.

I mean our RR now is solid, I'm confident had we batted first we could have a similar no. of runs for less wickets lost, but they have to go 7 an over from the start which combined with a very raw middle order is toxic

For those interested Sean Terry here is the son of Paul Terry, who played a few tests for England.

What a devastation there. Clearly Ireland not ready for internationals like this.

TEMBA BAVUMA became only the second South African to score a debut century as the Standard Bank Proteas began their limited-overs season with a record 206-run win over Ireland in their one-off Momentum One-Day International (ODI) at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni on Sunday.

Opener Bavuma, one of three players playing their first matches for the national team, struck a superb 113 (123 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) to help the hosts post a massive 354/5 after losing the toss and being asked to bat first.

The tourists, who play Australia in another one-off ODI at the same venue on Tuesday, offered little in response and were shot out for just 148 in 30.5 overs – JP Duminy collecting career-best figures of 4/16 in 4.5 overs. The all-rounder will count himself extremely unlucky not to have won the Man-of-the-Match prize after also striking an unbeaten 52, although this was a win that was set up by Bavuma.

The 26-year-old began nervously when he was dropped in the second over, but grew in confidence as he shared in a 159-run opening wicket stand with the outstanding Quinton de Kock, who made 82 (66 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes).

Their stand doubled the previous best opening stand – 75 by Morne van Wyk and AB de Villiers at Belfast in 2007 – against the Irish and was a venue record, going past the 155 of Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith against Bangladesh in 2002.

Bavuma followed in the footsteps of Colin Ingram as the only other South African to score three figures on debut, the latter getting his ton against Zimbabwe in 2010. There were also excellent contributions by Duminy, whose 43-ball innings included four fours and a six, and Farhaan Behardien (52 off 22 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes). The half century from Behardien was also a venue record.

Ireland lost their captain William Porterfield for a second-ball duck to Kagiso Rabada (1/22) and they never recovered. Duminy cleaned up the lower order after Wayne Parnell (2/36) and Aaron Phangiso (2/33) helped account for the top-order, with Dwaine Pretorius bagging 1/19 in his 5 overs on his maiden appearance for South Africa. The third debutant, Andile Phehlukwayo, went for 22 in the four overs he was afforded, but it mattered little as the home side inflicted their biggest-ever win over Ireland, surpassing the 200-run triumph at the last World Cup.

South Africa will begin their five-match ODI series against Australia starting on Friday.
