South Africa in the lead with a comprehensive win in the 1st Test, Pakistan have to do all the running to try and level the 3-match series or suffer yet another series loss.

Haris Sohail is out of the equation due to injury but Mohammad Abbas is all set to resume his international career.

So can Pakistan win this match?

Conditions

A warm, sunny day with temperatures ranging between 27 to 18°C is expected in Cape Town on day one of the Test. There's no forecast for rain for the first two days, but some rain is expected on the final three days of the Test. In the last Test played at the venue, Elgar got a hundred and South Africa posted two 300-plus scores in the match against Australia and won by a massive margin of 322 runs. The surface is expected to assist batting.

Squads

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (c), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Duanne Olivier, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Dane Paterson, Vernon Philander

Pakistan: Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed (c), Mohammad Rizwan, Yasir Shah, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi

Most probably... Wicket will take more spin after 3rd day... Yasir is the key...

Hope hosts add Vernon to the attack of 1st Test & play 5 bowling options .
Cricinfo in their preview hinted that Rabada might be rested which sounds ridiculous .

Must bat first and post 300
inshaAllah we will have this.
Shaan Masood , Azhar and Babar the keys

Do you want to finish the test in 2 days?

Why so insecure ? From the pictures posted yesterday , this pitch appears a good batting surface & always helps to have a good 5th bowling option available .

Well now with Philander back. Same batting line up for us. Hashim has got in form. I expect an innings defeat here for us.

1 is due

It’s so frustrating that Pakistan refuses to think outside the box. Play Fakhar at 6 and get Faheem in for Yasir and play hassan for Shafiq.

Pak batting is never going to muster 300. Match will last 3 days with Philander going through us.

He is a beast in Cape Town

So Pakistan are batting first.

Abbas replaces Hassan Ali.

South Africa with an all pace attack.

SA bowling. Hmmm...

I hope Pakistan play without fear - but also without needless 'aggression.' Just put the bad balls away and hope the good balls don't get nicks.

SA has a weak line up. Don't see them chasing anything above 200 in the fourth innings. Pakistan should take advantage and score heavily like India did against Ozzies earlier today.

Doubt thats gonna happen. This is Pak's best chance of winning anyway. PAK are the worst 4th innings batting lineup so they are better off batting first

Sadly that's slowly turning into just being terrible with the bat in the second innings.

If we don't collapse in first innings, we can do it customarily in the second.

The problem is lack of self-belief in this team and is not related to whether they bat first or second.

SA go with 4 pacers and drop the spinner. Pakistan keep the spinner in Yasir. So who read the pitch right this time?

I'm not even going to say we need a good start because we all know we can be sitting at 150-0 and end up 180 all out. :)) Let's just hope that our batsman come through today and we manage a score of about 300 runs.

Lets hope are feeble batting can get through 1st session without been 5 or 6 wickets down. Picking same batting line up is pathetic.

Even if they get through with no wickets down we all know they are capable of giving away all 10 in the next session. :yk Man what fool decided to go with the batting line up unchanged...

Same batting line up? What was that Einstein quote?

The conditions are perfect for batting, but then again with Pakistan batting, it might be a different cup of tea out there.

Pakistan need to score at least 250 in order to keep themselves in for the 2nd innings. Anything less than 200 and the game could be over by the time Yasir gets the ball in his hands on the 4th/5th day.

All talk about Shafiq but still in playing 11. Hopefully he will get a pair and drop forever.

Agreed. But avoiding batting last and getting Yasir to bowl on a pitch that's bound to help more in the 4th innings certainly increases PAK's chances of winning, however minimal you might think they are. This is certainly a very bold move by Faf. Not many captains would do this nowadays.

75/2 would be a good start in session 1 . Anyone seen the pitch report ?

Rabada wasn't very happy with the pitch. Called it "dull".

I wonder why they chose to bowl? Maybe to take advantage of whatever juice there is in the beginning. Would be a shame if SA end up dishing a cliche subcontinent type dull pitch.

Historically newlands offer some assistance to spinners going into day 3,4 but faf is testing pak's weakness against pace so thats why i think he opted to play 4 pacers which i think will work well against pak..

Sadly that's slowly turning into just being terrible with the bat in the second innings.

Let's see. I still think you're best shot is batting first. There's not a whole lot of bounce at newlands compared to the highveldt and mental midgets like asad might score some runs here especially without scoreboard pressure. Also it's a 4 man pace attack with no real 5th option. If you can tire them out, you have a damn good chance.

They are banking on Pakistan batting to flop because it does not depend on type of pitch but the type of pressure or name of the bowler they are facing.

If Hashim Amla bowled to this team, he might pick up a wicket.

Agree. Also probably a bit scared due to their own brittle middle order.

Batting first on this track might not be a bad idea.... but facing the four horsemen first up wont be something any batsman would be looking forward to.

The first two overs will let us know if the pitch is flat or not.

The overhyped amir is again preferred over hasan ali.

Amir outbowled Hasan in the first Test so it's a no brainer.

Abbas has to play and if Pakistan want to retain the spinner/Yasir, they have to drop a pacer. Out of Shaheen, Amir and Hasan - Hasan was the weakest link in the last game so dropping anyone else would make no sense.

I think Faf is underestimating you lot to be honest. Instead of trying to outbat Pakistan and use scoreboard pressure, he's looking to blast you out for 150 odd. This might easily backfire. Last time around a Saffer team with quite a few players at their peak struggled to beat Pakistan at the same venue while batting second. Their lineup is nowhere near as good as that one and PAK's pace attack is better. This might look a foolish decision if SA don't grab atleast 4 wickets in the 1st session.

Not playing Keshav could be a costly mistake . After first over , it appears this is certainly not a pacy surface .

Maybe both? Last time we played here, Philander took 9 and Ajmal took 10.

Not comparable. Vernon took 9 but South Africa still played a spinner in that game, both sides knew there was something in it for the spinners but when you go with an all pace attack you're basically saying that a spinner is worthless here which is quite a bold move. The only other explanation is that South Africa are banking everything on the first innings and want to make sure spinners never come into the game.

First over suggests that spinners do have some role to play, let's see

Fakhar is not a test material and Inzi/ Micky don't have any clue.

Good shot!

Pakistan need to be confident. 4 pacer strategy can backfire on SA here.
