South Africa end Day 3 at 27/3 in their second innings, needing 148 to win the first Test against Pakistan

Man imagine the days kf no DRS. The amount of time Pakistan was robbed in the Westindies and some questionable umpiring im Pakistan against tourists as well. Can impact matches and series.
 
Rizwan batting effortin first inning and Babar's 2nd innings looking like gold atm, some posters were trying to rubbish them. Shan poor captaincy allowed SA take the lead in the first inning.

SA still has 60% of winning but timid , indecisive feet movement will definitely create panic. If Markram gets out immediately tomorrow i see SA imploding.
 
The problem for Pakistan is they would need to bowl 10 ( well 7 ) good drliveries to bowl them out, while some of the Pak batters gave wickets to full toss/ long hops. Test level concentration hi nahi inki.

Exactly been a problem for a long time now. Last time we batted well was England tour 2016

totally! Saud and KG’s rubbish 50s really ruined the vibe. I mean, who needs those under-pressure runs when you’ve got Babar’s stunning 4 and Rizwan’s unforgettable 27 & 3
 
Had Pak not gifted wickets we'd be marching to victory SMH

Pakistan to come close but Bosch will guide SA to the finish line I feel.

Great performance though so far by pak. Threw wickets however.
 
Good fightback with the ball, sadly though not enough runs to defend here, SA will scrap home tomorrow

Good effort from Abbas and Khurram but I see south Africa easily chasing this and winning by 5-6 wickets

The target just isn't enough. Too many soft dismissals and failure to dislodge tail means we have lost an easily winnable test

Ya but pak has been fighting fire with fire not like some people were saying pak would loose easily pak has actually competed well first time lot of guys were playing in sa conditions for first time so kudos to them.
 
I think Pakistan are 50 runs short. Bowlers have fought back well but RSA just need a 30 odd partnership and the game will be over for Pakistan.

200-250 per test innings is just not good enough at this level. Need to be able to regularly post 350 plus esp. in the first innings (which often decides the fate of a test match) like Australia and England

RSA batting is weak too but they have home advantage.

Plus Pak need to play more test matches so that players gain enough experience of playing this format. I don't think we have played more than 10 tests during the past two years..

Look at Root for instance. He made his test debut in Dec 2012. He has played 152 tests in exactly 12 years. That's an average of 12.7 tests per year! A Pak player would have played just 70-80 tests during the same period. England regularly play 7 tests during the English Summer alone. Our players are clearly at a huge disadvantage when it comes to test cricket. Should try to play at least 8-10 tests per year.
 
220 could have been winning total here and should have been scored if the batsman have not givin soft wickets the only way I see us winning is someone having a 5/6 for 20 like haul hopefully Naseem can start tommorow and bowl an accurate 145 kph spell with Abbas from other end
 

Saud, Babar hit half-centuries as Pakistan fight back on rain-hit day​


Pakistan needed seven wickets while South Africa required 121 runs to win the Centurion Test as only 46.4 overs were possible on a truncated third day here at the SuperSport Park on Saturday.

In pursuit of a slender 148-run target South Africa slipped to 27-3 in 9 overs before bad light forced an early close of play. Mohammad Abbas (4-3-3-2) and Khurram Shahzad (5-0-22-1) shared the three South Africa wickets to fall while.

Abbas pinned Tony de Zorzi leg-before to draw the first blood for Pakistan with 11 runs on the board in the fourth over. Khurram struck Ryan Rickelton (five-ball duck) on the pads in the next over to remove him reducing South Africa 12-2.

Abbas got the better of Tristan Stubbs for a solitary run off 10 balls when he was adjudged leg-before in the eighth over. Skipper Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram (22 not out, 25b, 4x4s) will be on the crease when South Africa resume their batting on day four.

Earlier, Pakistan managed to add 149 runs to their overnight score of 88-3 as they lost seven wickets, extending their lead to 147. After the rain forced late start to the day, Babar Azam, who brought up his 27th Test half-century, fell to Marco Jansen having faced 85 balls for 50 runs, inclusive of nine fours.

After Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha were snapped by Jansen for three and one, respectively, Aamir Jamal added valuable 32 runs for the seventh-wicket with Saud Shakeel. Aamir (18, 32b, 2x4s) and Naseem fell in the 50th and 51st over while Pakistan’s top scorer, Saud, returned to the pavilion for a 113-ball 84 hitting 10 fours and one six as Pakistan were bundled out for 237 in 59.4 overs in their second innings.

Jansen was the pick of South Africa’s bowlers as he returned figures of 6-52 in 14 overs while Kagiso Rabada picked up two wickets. Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson dismissed one batter each.

Day 3 of 5 – South Africa require 121 runs to win with seven wickets in hand at the SuperSport Park, Centurion

Pakistan 211 all out, 57.3 overs (Kamran Ghulam 54, Aamir Jamal 28, Mohammad Rizwan 27; Dane Peterson 5-61, Corbin Bosch 4-63) and 237 all out, 59.4 overs (Saud Shakeel 84, Babar Azam 50, Shan Masood 28, Saim Ayub 27; Marco Jansen 6-52, Kagiso Rabada 2-68)

South Africa 301 all out, 73.4 overs (Aiden Markram 89, Corbin Bosch 81 not out, Temba Bavuma 31, David Bedingham 30; Khurram Shahzad 3-75, Naseem Shah 3-92, Aamir Jamal 2-36) and 27-3, 9 overs (Aiden Markram 22 not out; Mohammad Abbas 2-3, Khurram Shahzad 1-22)
 
Same old story for Pak.

When Corbin came in to bat, he gave three chances, all of which were shelved because of casual field placement, over confidence, & inability to read the game. Man scored an 80+, changed the game & here we are praying for miracles which seldom if ever happen in life.

The first tour it was Symcox who was our nemesis (I think, not sure, never saw those matches just read about them online)

Then when we had a good chance to win in Pretoria when Ajmal was at his peak & Pieterson of all people became the second coming of Klusener and stole a game away.

There's always some player from the opposition that stands up & wins their team the match from a weak position while our players just sleep walk. Even today Babar, Riz, Jamal, & Agha showed absolute no will to fight in a position that wasn't strong per say but was competitive. All we needed was 50+ runs but they just succumbed so badly.

Pak cricket unfortunately lacks brilliance and resilience, no one really stands up and plays a fighting nuggety ugly innings taking body blows & just not giving up.

Too much priority has been given to T20 unfortunately it’s where the money is because Pakistanis are some of the worst paid international cricketers. Same with PCB, no money. It’s sad.

Good fightback from Pakistan but unless Markram and Bavuma fall very quickly tomorrow, it's going to be very difficult for Pakistan to win. I think Naseem will need to find a special spell in him for Pakistan to win.

Sucks how Corbin batting is the difference in the game. It's mind-boggling Pakistan let a debutant get an unbeaten 81 on this pitch that's been difficult and let him score more than he's ever scored domestically. Letting a bowler like Paterson get a 5fer too in the first inning. Just a lot of silly things where Pakistan lost the plot and it seems ridiculous Pakistan are somehow still in the game but here we are. Just a bit better tactical batting & bowling and Pakistan would be favourites to win this game and we will definitely look back at all the lost opportunities if Pakistan end up losing this.

Optimistically, here's hoping we see something special tomorrow and I think Naseem will need to pull off something special for Pakistan to win.

Same old story in 30 years of touring SA and Australia.
 
Pak needed to learn from the first inns when they gave away 7/8 wkts.

Just learn the lesson but didnt, have a target in mind, 220 -250, and work towards it, didnt.

I do get the fact, that they dont play enough test cricket, so lack of know - how, but still no excuse.

Look at S Africa all 3 wkts were taken by Pakistan, nothing given.
 
Pharaphrasing Ramiz Raja's chat with Mbangwa "Pakistan can take advantage of choking tendencies of South Africa". He didn't say it that way. But that is what he implied. There was dead pan silence from Pommie for a while lol
 
To many times in these conditions, Pakistan will have 1 good partnership followed by a cluster or 3 or 4 wickets falling for next to nothing.

It's just poor from mental and a team aspect. The lack of accountability or players wanting to step up and play a meaningful inns is non existent in this team.

Psychological Advantage:

"I think the match is evenly poised now. It's in an even situation. We have to bowl well and take wickets. I think getting Markram early in the morning will be crucial for us."

Bowling Strategy:

"The bowling we saw from Pakistan this afternoon is the best bowling as a unit we've seen in the whole match from either side. Our bowlers found the right length, and they just tried to attack the stumps—that’s where all the wickets came from. The key is how you assess the pitch and get the lengths right. If you assess the pitch quickly, it’ll be good for you."

Batting Approach:

"I was very clear coming to South Africa with my approach and my game plan. I’ve worked hard on my skills and I am developing new shots as well. I was clear about how to approach things in South Africa, and in the end, it just paid off. I’m happy with that."

Thoughts or any regrets on failure to set a competitive total:

"Yeah, we are committing some mistakes. When we went to Australia last year, we made the same mistakes there. Unfortunately we are finding ourselves unable to finish well (with the bat while setting target). So yes, this is bit of a concern for us. Even today we made some other mistakes too and consequently you would have witnessed that we missed the chance to post a 200 plus target and had to settle on just 148. Also in the first innings, at one stage they were just leading us by 10 runs and could have been easily dismissed (with one wicket remaining). So these are those small areas where we need to work and sort our mistakes out."

Looking Ahead to Day 5:

"As a group, we are very clear about our approach. We have to work really hard and stick to our plans. If the plan is to hit the stumps, then we have to hit the stumps. We have to be more focused and work hard to get this wicket and win the test match."
 
It's good they're making a game out of it, but unless they pick up 3-4 more in the first hour their chances are slim. Even just 50 more would have made this a lot more interesting.
