Big returns boost Proteas white-ball squads for England tour

Having clinched the ODI series against Australia, South Africa have announced their white-ball cast for the upcoming tour of England.
South Africa have announced their squads for the ODI and T20I series against England starting early September.

The squad that has featured in the ongoing white-ball series against Australia has been strengthened by some major returns.

Swashbuckling batter David Miller is making a return to the T20I setup for the first time since the home series against Pakistan last year.

Miller’s previous outing for South Africa across formats came in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, when he scored a valiant century in the semi-final loss against New Zealand.

South Africa squads

ODI squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Toni de Zorzi, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, Matthew Breetzke, Kwena Maphaka, Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Nandre Burger, Wiaan Mulder, Tristan Stubbs, Senuran Muthusamy.

T20I squad: Aiden Markram (c), Keshav Maharaj, Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka, Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Ryan Rickelton, Donovan Ferreira, Senuran Muthusamy, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams.

Also making a return to the T20I setup is all-rounder Marco Jansen, who missed out on the T20I series against Australia.

Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada, who was ruled out of the ongoing ODI series Down Under owing to an ankle injury, has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads for England.

The Proteas will play three ODIs and as many T20Is against England, starting 2 September.

The T20I series presents a valuable stage for preparation en route to next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Series schedule:

1st ODI - September 2, Headingley

2nd ODI - September 4, Lord’s

3rd ODI - September 7, The Rose Bowl

3rd T20I - September 14, Trent Bridge

320 is a winning score at Headingley , generally. And Saffers aren't great chasers. Poor decision by Bavuma, looks like.

No matter how good the pitch is for betting England will still throw wickets . sign of Tullebaaz team :kp

England 5/110, struggling big time

Can they bat out their full 50 overs?

All the hype that Sonny baker got in 100 is being put under test. Markram has really laid into him. Forgettable debut so far. First ball duck. Then some serious punishment at the hands of Markram

Bavuma is so underrated as captain. While everyone felt it was a dumb decision to chase, he studied pitch far more brilliantly. SA 47/0 ATM

I think SA would have won the match either way. It doesn't really matter against current England. On paper England is a very good side. But they have been doing poorly for a while.

Definitely Sam Curran deserves a chance ahead of this "generational talent lol" Bethell. He is a street smart cricketer.

Watchign some good cover drives in England after Test series agianst India where Gill, Rahul, Karun, Jaiswal, Sundar unleashed gorgeous cover drives.

Asia cup has some rivalries. India v Pakistan, Pak v Afgh and Bang v Sri Lanka. It is better than this for sure
Mostly lower ranked sides. So it will give us a contest on third grade UAE pitches infront of poor atmosphere. Asia cup has been a boring spectacle for more than a decade. Don't expect this to be different given how poor sides are.

The phrase ' Blow hot and cold' aptly describes England

If they play badly, it is often a dismal batting collapse resulting in a heavy loss

WHen did they win a ODI game in recent times. There is a reason why they are ranked 8 in ODIs.
Their main players don't even play list A cricket. The 100 is at the same time as the List A tournament.

T20 (or 100) and 50 overs have some similarities but their distinctions mean that not all t20 skills can carry over. Players need to learn to bat for a bit longer. Be more patient and bowlers need to know when to attack and defend.

If you treat it just like a extended T20 you will often implode.

Those who say ODI is an extended T20 do not understand cricket. :inti

ODI requires different skill sets.

They didn't exactly play "T20" cricket there. They were getting out edging to slip including Root. SA bowlers extracted movement. Besides Morgan's team was even more aggressive than these guys in the one dayers. SA was just too good for them.

England were bundled out for just 131 and thrashed by seven wickets in the first one-day international at Headingley as South Africa handed out a bruising reality check to the hosts' new era of white-ball cricket under captain Harry Brook.

In an abject performance, England reached 82-2 only to be dismissed in 24.3 overs in their first white-ball matches since Brook began his tenure by sweeping aside West Indies at the start of the summer.

The collapse started when the captain was run out for 12 and opener Jamie Smith, the only batter to make more than 15, followed for a 48-ball 54.

Jacob Bethell's tough summer continued, Will Jacks, one of five players who were playing in the Hundred final less than 48 hours ago, chipped back a catch and Jos Buttler struggled for 15 from 24 balls.

The last seven wickets fell for 29 runs in 7.1 overs as spinner Keshav Maharaj took 4-22 on a pitch that did not turn and seamer Wiaan Mulder 3-33.

Fast bowler Sonny Baker was then hit for 76 runs, including 14 boundaries, in a brutal, seven-over introduction to international cricket - the most expensive figures by an England bowler on ODI debut.

In the second over, Jofra Archer nicked off Ryan Rickelton only for the ball to be judged to have bounced before first slip and still would have had the left-hander lbw had England reviewed an lbw shout. Their failure to do so summed up their day.

Aiden Markram flogged 86 in 55 balls with England failing to make a breakthrough until he was spectacularly caught by Smith with the winning line only 11 runs away.

The crowd cheered ironically when Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs followed with the scores level but Rickelton ended 31 not out and the Proteas won with a massive 29.1 overs to spare.

The three-match series continues at Lord's on Thursday.

Regardless of this match, The fact is England do not play list A cricket, so they will suffer in this format, as they have done for the last few years as upcoming talent does not know what 50 overs is.

Harry brooks - Put that (loss) behind us, it's a new day, we feel like the series starts today for us, go out there and do things that we always talk about.

Harry Brook & England “ Showing some accountability? *** was that ? It’s always a new day for us & It’s how we play.

He Will come up with some new Motivational **** next game if they lose this one too

:klopp :kp

Doesn't look like a batting wicket and looks like a sticky one when rashof is bowling .eng batsmen will not like it an inch.

Bethel Good attacking knock comes to end . England 160/4

Let's see what will overhyped brooks will do now.

:kp

Yeah his game is not organised enough for ODI cricket. But tbh that's seemingly a problem with all young English batsmen
Art of constructing a ODI innings is missing from this line up. They used to go after bowling on dead tracks in 2019 world cup. Got exposed in 2023 and CT.

That was terrible. You've played for so long, you've gotta stay and finish, you dont throw your wicket away like that.

Thats shameful Jos..!! :kp

Temu Tendulkar always played statpadding innings to maintain his AVG/ stats in all formats but no use for team .

Today he played 60 odd runs knock before throwing his wickets. That's the story of Temu Tendulkar whole career

A total statpadder and overhyped player

Less Talk about Fraud tullebaaz brook is better for him.

:klopp :kp

If Archer had a brain he would be very dangerous.1st he took a non existent double and ran out Adil Rashid who is a capable hitter . Then took a single in the 4th ball and gave strike to Saquib . Then allowed Saquib to take single in the last ball to hold onto the strike

:kp

Wow. England bazballers were having a party on flat decks in ind test series. In yesterday's match, Ducket struggled for 14(33).Brooks played more dots .smith first ball dismissal and roots usual statpadding were quite a sight.england should drop one or two of the bazballers and get a proper batsmen. In sa,all pitches are not batting tracks. At this rate they will struggle on any pitch with something .

England's poor form in white-ball cricket continued as they were beaten by South Africa to lose the second one-day international and the series with a game to spare.

Though not nearly as one-sided as the hammering at Headingley on Tuesday, a five-run margin did not reflect the nature of the contest.

Set 331, which would have represented the highest successful chase in an ODI at Lord's, England fell short on 325-9.

The series defeat is England's first since Harry Brook took charge of the white-ball team at the beginning of the summer, and their fifth in six ODI series since the 2023 World Cup.

In damp conditions, England chose to field and reduced South Africa to 93-3, only for Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs to rebuild. Breetzke made 85 and Stubbs 58.

Dewald Brevis' 42 from only 20 balls lifted South Africa to 330-8. Though Jofra Archer claimed four wickets, a combined 10 overs of spin from Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks cost 112.

England lost Jamie Smith to the first ball of the reply and Ben Duckett for a scratchy 18, yet the pursuit was ignited by Bethell's 58. With Joe Root in superb touch for 61, England were in in the hunt at 143-2.

Bethell cut to point and Root was stumped by a distance, the two wickets falling for the addition of only four runs.

From then on, England never got on top of the chase. Jos Buttler made 61, Brook 33 and Jacks 39 without ever being in control.

Archer kept a thinning crowd entertained and, in the company of last man Saqib Mahmood, needed 16 from the last over. Spinner Senuran Muthusamy held his nerve and Archer could not find the six from the final delivery that would have tied the scores.

England must win the dead rubber in Southampton on Sunday to avoid being on the wrong end of a home ODI series clean sweep for the first time since 2006.
