JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa is pleased to confirm the Proteas men’s tour to West Indies following months of positive engagement with Cricket West Indies (CWI). It will be the South Africans’ first bilateral tour to the Caribbean since 2010, followed by a tri-series in 2016 that also featured Australia.

This tour, which had to be rescheduled from 2020, will include two Test matches and five T20s, from 10 June to 03 July 2021 in St. Lucia at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and Grenada at the National Cricket Stadium, respectively.

In their last bilateral encounter in the Windies in 2010, South Africa won the three-match Test series 2-0 (the second fixture was drawn) and produced a white-ball sweep, winning the T20 and ODI series 2-0 and 5-0 respectively.

CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith, is delighted to have the team return to the Caribbean and expressed his gratitude to CWI and the governments of St. Lucia and Grenada for their helpfulness in ensuring the tour takes place.

“We are extremely pleased to have the men’s team’s tour to the West Indies officially confirmed. COVID-19 has played havoc with the ICC Future Tours Programme and we are thankful to Cricket West Indies and the governments of St. Lucia and Grenada for ensuring that the tour goes ahead as planned. The hosting nations, in particular, came to the party at very short notice and Cricket South Africa would like to extend its immense gratitude to them for their enthusiasm and willingness to host us.

“Tours to the West Indies are always one of the most highly anticipated tours of them all, not only because of the beauty of the venues, but the quality and competitiveness of the cricket that is in store. We are looking forward to explosive displays of cricket and entertainment on our screens for fans around the world to consume as the two evenly matched countries come together for both Test and T20 cricket.”

The Proteas are scheduled to arrive in St. Lucia on 01 June.

Lot of Cricket happening Next month. England NZ series, India NZ final , WI South Africa series. Fun times ahead.

This has been a long overdue SA tour of WI .I remember last time SA went to WI , it was the FIFA World Cup 2010 going on.

Unbelievably the first SAF tour of the Caribbean in 11 years. This will be a very good opportunity for WI to win their first series against SAF since 1992.

However if WI prepare quick, bouncy pitches in St Lucia that'll play into the hands of Rabada and Nortje who'll look at how Mark Wood destroyed WI there in 2019.

Also expecting a high scoring T20 series as Grenada has a small ground. Both series should be very competitive.

Expect West Indies to win the T20s. More excited by the tests for this tour.

This will be a tough series for the West Indies because despite all the recent problems, South Africa's batting remains stronger than whatever set of batsmen selected by the West Indies. Perhaps the best chance of a home win will be if the pitch turns a lot to allow Rahkeem Cornwall to take a bag full of wickets.

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has named a 30-man squad for a three week high-performance red-ball training camp in St Lucia, starting tomorrow, Sunday May 16, in preparation for the upcoming Test Series against South Africa.

The camp provides an opportunity for established Test and developing players alike to sharpen and enhance their red-ball skills in a high-performance environment after a month-long break after the Sri Lanka Series. The camp will include two ‘best v best’ inter-squad matches, as the West Indies look ahead to their final series in the ICC World Test Championship with two Test Matches against the Proteas in June.

Most players attending have been involved in recent West Indies Test squads and high-performance camps. A few players, however, will be receiving their first international training experience since the beginning of the pandemic including Guyanese fast bowler Nial Smith, Jamaican top-order batsman Paul Palmer, Vincentian leg-spinning all-rounder Keron Cottoy and St. Kitts & Nevis’ left-hand batter, Kieran Powell.

Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite and fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph will not be attending as they are currently competing in the English County Championship and will return to the West Indies for the Test Series if selected. Jason Holder is being rested due to his workload across all formats in recent months.

The squad will arrive in St. Lucia and complete the quarantine protocols established by the Ministry of Health for the bio-secure environment, before they start training led by Head Coach, Phil Simmons and his team management unit. Coach Simmons said:

“This camp is very important for our preparation for the upcoming Test Series against South Africa and for the rest of our busy and exciting summer. We will continue the work which we begun last year in England, to further develop our Test team into a force to be reckoned with in world cricket.

We welcome the good news of a rise to sixth in the ICC Test Rankings, however, this is just the beginning of our journey and we know we have lots of hard work ahead of us.”

CWI’s Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, is looking forward to the camp as CWI continues its investment in and focus on building a high-performance environment:

“The pandemic has made it necessary to assemble larger squads during the pre-tour phase to allow our preparation to be facilitated within one bio-secure bubble. This has turned into a positive for us by creating a much-needed level of focus and intensity leading into tours while also allowing for players to make a case for selection if they perform well in the warm-up games. Given the lack of regional 4-day cricket so far this year, these camps have taken on even greater importance in our test match preparations.”

Cricket West Indies (CWI), in partnership with the St. Lucia National Cricket Association, have been working closely with the Government and Ministry of Health to create a safe bio-secure bubble for the players and staff. Everyone entering the bio-secure bubble will undergo two COVID-19 PCR tests prior to their arrival in St. Lucia and throughout the duration of their stay.

The Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium (DSCG) will host both Test matches against South Africa, the first bilateral cricket that they have played in the Caribbean since 2010, with the first Test to be played from June 12-16 and the second from June 18-22.

JOHANNESBURG: KwaZulu-Natal Coastal off-spinner, Prenelan Subrayen, will join the Proteas Test squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia next month. The 27-year-old from Durban is joined by his former South Africa under-19s teammate, Lizaad Williams, who has also received his first call-up to the national Test team.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to announce the 19-strong Test squad that will be led by Dean Elgar in his first outing as captain since his permanent appointment in early March and the Temba Bavuma-led 20-man white ball squad to take on West Indies and Ireland.

Subrayen finished third in the 2020/2021 CSA Franchise 4-Day Cup Leading Bowling Averages table with 19 wickets in four matches at an average of 18.89 and best bowling figures of 6/24 for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins.

The National Selection Panel has put an emphasis on firming up the spin-bowling department in preparation for the slow nature of the wickets of the Caribbean. Subrayen will be accompanied by Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and George Linde for the team’s first bilateral tour to the region in 11 years, plus the part-time spin options of the skipper himself as well as Aiden Markram.

Other uncapped selections include Kyle Verreynne, Keegan Petersen, Sarel Erwee and Marco Jansen.

New additions from South Africa’s inbound limited overs tour against Pakistan, Sisanda Magala and Williams, have been retained in the national side for both limited overs outings against the Windies and the Irish.

Discussions with AB de Villiers have concluded with the batsman deciding once and for all, that his retirement will remain final.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, said:

“This is a massive outing for the Proteas. We have a fully fit team with an exciting balance of youth and experience. The Selection Panel is confident that it has put together an exciting and excited, young group of cricketers that will be well led by Dean (Elgar) and Temba (Bavuma).

“The Caribbean is well-known for its low and slow wickets and we have ensured that we have chosen the personnel needed for every eventuality on this very important excursion. While there aren’t any (ICC World Test Championship) points to play for, it is still of vital importance for South Africa to produce winning results through a steadily growing and high-performing cricket pipeline.

“The historic tour to Ireland is crucial for points towards our qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup and preparation for the T20 World Cup later this year. This is the start of our road to these trophies and every tour will see us field our absolute best sides.

“The team has been in a rebuilding phase for a while now but we are satisfied that the return on investment is going to show itself sooner rather than later. We have to trust the process that has been put in place and support our team while they find themselves and their way. These are truly exciting times in South African cricket, with an exciting new leadership group that is determined to return the team back to its winning ways.”

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel announces a provisional 18-man squad ahead of the three back-to-back five-match T20 International (T20I) Series against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.

The expanded squad maintains the blend of experienced players with exciting young talent as the West Indies continue preparations in the build up to the defence of their ICC T20 World Cup title, to be held in India in October-November 2021. Sheldon Cottrell, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Oshane Thomas and Hayden Walsh Jr. return alongside the majority of the squad who featured in the 2-1 T20I Series victory against Sri Lanka in March.

The provisional squad will quarantine and train in St. Lucia ahead of the first T20I Series against South Africa starting on the June 26 at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium. The official squad will subsequently be selected and announced ahead of each Series.

CWI’s Lead Selector, Roger Harper, explained the thinking behind naming this squad:

“The Provisional T20I Squad was put together with all T20I Home Series Matches against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan in mind. This gives us the opportunity to continue to build towards the upcoming World Cup and to determine our best squad and our ideal eleven.”

The West Indies Head Coach, Phil Simmons, is confident going into the summer and looking forward to the World Cup and he commented:

“These upcoming T20Is are crucial in terms of our preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup. We have assembled a very solid squad — with experienced world-class match-winners and some exciting young talented players, ready to explode onto the global stage and do great things for West Indies cricket. We are at that point where we have identified those who we will look to be the core of the squad to defend our World Cup title, so we want to make sure the upcoming matches create that environment — the way we train, the way we plan, the way we execute and the chemistry within the group. We won five years ago, so the next few weeks and months will be major steppingstones on the road towards defending our title and being World Champions for a third time.”

The Men in Maroon are the defending ICC IT20 World Champions and also lifted the title in 2012.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has been working closely with regional Governments, their Ministries of Health and CARPHA to ensure the training camps and matches can proceed within a bio-secure environment. All players and support staff will undergo rigorous COVID-19 testing prior to and during each of these engagements.

Saturday, 29 May 2021 — GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia – The West Indies Men’s squad has returned to full training in two groups at their preparation camp in St. Lucia after all members of the squad returned negative PCR tests, following the latest round of testing that was conducted on Thursday.

They had team sessions on Friday as well as Saturday morning and afternoon and Head Coach, Phil Simmons is happy to be able to now finetune his squad’s preparation in the build-up to the two-match Test Series against South Africa. These matches will be played at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground for the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy on June 10-14 and June 18-22 and are the final matches in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The Proteas are due to arrive on the island on Tuesday, June 1.

The West Indies players will be involved in a “Best v Best” four-day match, at the same venue beginning on Monday, May 31, and the Head Coach sees this as a great opportunity for all involved. Full details on this match will be made available later.

“I am happy that we are back to full training. We are happy with the preparations up to this point and everyone is fully aware of what is required,” Simmons said. “Yes, we had four good Test matches (vs Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), but at the same time, people need to know that their position is not guaranteed unless they continue play well. Guys who are out, need to show that they want to get back in by doing well in these games. So, it is a benefit to every one of us.”

Simmons also praised the facilities provided in St. Lucia throughout the camp at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, which is overseen by CWI Head Groundsman, Kent Crafton. The West Indies Men are gearing up to begin a busy summer schedule, which includes visits from South Africa, Australia and Pakistan before the Caribbean Premier League begins in late August.

The players and staff were previously forced to train in small groups, as a result of the positive COVID-19 and isolation of fast bowler Marquino Mindley on Friday, May 22. Mindley, who has already returned one negative PCR test on Thursday, remains asymptomatic and in isolation at the team hotel. The CWI medical team continues to monitor his progress, as he requires one more negative PCR test before being allowed to re-join the squad.

New Test Skipper Dean Elgar Wants Team To Return To 'South African Way' Of Cricket

Elgar will be leading South Africa in the two-match Test series against the West Indies, starting June 10.

New Test skipper Dean Elgar has called for a return to the "South African" way of playing cricket, which is punctuated by consistent performances, big centuries and five-wicket hauls, as the Proteas look to open a "new chapter" after a prolonged lean phase. (More Cricket News)

South Africa head to the Caribbean for a two-match red-ball series against the West Indies, starting June 10.

"Now that we are in a new chapter, we need to play more cricket and better cricket," Elgar told reporters on Saturday, ahead of the team's departure for St Lucia.

"We are conscious that over the last period we haven't been very consistent.

"Our skill level hasn't been where it should be. We need to get back to a bit more of a consistent nature of cricket; a bit more of a South African way," Elgar added.

Since Mark Boucher took over as coach in 2019, the Proteas have played just eight Tests -- largely due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions -- losing five of them.

Once a formidable force, South Africa have slipped to the seventh spot in the ICC Test rankings.

"We've always had a batting line-up that has scored heavily. And fast bowlers. That's the South African way.

"We need to get back to scoring big hundreds and taking five-fors like it used to be.

"I feel like we can get the Proteas brand back to where it was a few years before. That will be my biggest goal. I know it's going to be hard work," Elgar said.

The 33-year-old feels it will be challenging to get the players to trust the process and adapt to it quickly.

"It's trying to change players' mindsets; to try and get that buy-in from every individual and to try and get them to trust your process going forward.

"One of the more challenging aspects of the job will be to try and get the trust of the players so that they can trust the process, to believe in the process and to do it quickly and adapt quickly. It's something I believe very strongly in."

South Africa are set to arrive in St Lucia on Tuesday where they will serve a three-day quarantine.

After returning two negative COVID-19 tests, they will be allowed to train from the fourth day but will remain limited to their rooms and will be able to make use of all the hotel's facilities after seven days.

WI are preparing for this series with an internal "Best v Best" warmup which is being streamed live on YouTube.

Chemar Holder has already taken three wickets, Shai Hope has a fifty.

Looking forward to Dean Elgar's captaincy. Always rated him highly, he should have been given the captaincy before QDk to be fair.

SA have not toured Windies since 2010 for a Test series. So many good players hardly have played there.

Faf du Plessis went through his entire 69 Test career without playing a Test there.

It will be a good series in my opinion. Hopefully, Markram can hit a few hundreds and put forward his claim as a world class test opener.

Won't be surprised if West Indies prepare same lifeless tracks that they prepared during the boring Test series against SL..

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has named a provisional 17-man squad as preparations continue for the upcoming Betway Test Series against South Africa. The squad is expected to be further cut down to an official 13 members on Monday, June 7.

The two-match Betway Test Series will be played at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground for the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy on June 10-14 and June 18-22. These are the final matches in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with both teams trying to finish higher in the final Championship table.

West Indies coach Phil Simmons is looking to his improving pace attack to steer the side to a first ever test series victory over South Africa when the teams start the first of two matches in St Lucia on Thursday.

The wicket at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground looks as though it will suit the seamers, which is a strength of both sides, and according to Simmons provides his team with the best chance of bowling the tourists out twice.

"The improvement I would like to see for this series is our ability to take 20 wickets," he told reporters. "We did in Bangladesh on helpful pitches, and when the pitch was not helpful in Antigua (against Pakistan), we struggled.

"Our fast bowling department has been strong for long now. They are the ones that have kept us in matches, bowling out teams when it did not appear likely."

South Africa is a team in transition having lost a number of senior players to retirement in recent years, especially in the batting department. But Simmons has warned his side not to be complacent.

"Any team you come up against, you have to look for where you can exploit them. They are very strong at the top with the captain (Dean Elgar) and then later down the order with guys like (Quinton) de Kock.

"We have to step it up and be 100% better than we were when we played our last game. We are up to six (in the test rankings) and that is just the start of things.

"We want to be up at the top and we have to play as though we want to be there."

West Indies has won only three of their 28 tests against South Africa, the last victory in 2007. This will be the first time they have met in the longer format since 2015.

GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named the West Indies Men’s 13-member squad for the first Betway Test Match against South Africa. The Test squad includes one newcomer in Jayden Seales, the exciting 19-year-old fast bowler from Trinidad & Tobago and former member of West Indies Under-19 World Cup squad in 2020, who has been very impressive since he emerged on the scene.

The panel also recalled Shai Hope, the top-order batsman, and Kieran Powell, the experienced left-handed opener. Hope last played Test cricket in England in July last year, while Powell’s last Test appearance was in Bangladesh in December, 2018.

Speaking on the squad selection, Roger Harper, the Lead Selector said: “Jayden Seales is young, very enthusiastic and has a big heart. In the ‘Best v Best’ matches he bowled with pace, got movement and has displayed the ability to take wickets. We think he is capable of adding potency to the bowling attack.

“Kieran Powell we know is a very capable batsman who we expect to add quality and depth to the batting department. He put himself in the mix with his performance in the Best v Best match. Shai Hope has performed very well in the red ball matches he has played, following on the back of his highly successful One-Day International series against Sri Lanka, so he has forced his way into the squad by performance.”

Harper added: “The aim is to continue to build on the performances of the last two Test series and to keep improving as a Test team. We must continue the process of working hard, playing with great passion, playing with determination and a great desire to succeed. Doing that consistently will bring us the right results. The training camp gave the players the opportunity to prepare for the Betway Test series in all departments, considering that no real red ball cricket has been played since the series against Sri Lanka in March.”

WI wont get a better chance then here to win a test series vs SA. Both sides are pretty weak and in transition period.

Unbelievably the first SAF tour of the Caribbean in 11 years. This will be a very good opportunity for WI to win their first series against SAF since 1992.

South Africa toured West Indies in 2016 for a tri-series. Its their first test tour in 11 years.

South Africa will leave it up to individual players to decide whether to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement ahead of the first Test against the West Indies in Saint Lucia starting on Thursday.

The home side has confirmed it will take a knee before the game, but South Africa captain Dean Elgar says his team will allow each player to make up his own mind about what to do.

The South African players have previously worn black armbands or raised their right fists in a salute, but have refused to take a knee, a stance which drew criticism, including from the interim Cricket South Africa board.

"It has been quite a journey for our side with regards this topic," Elgar told reporters on Wednesday. "We had a meeting with West Indies Cricket and gave them our version of how we would support their campaign.

"We have given our players the right to perform whichever gesture they want to. If they are comfortable with taking the knee, they may. If a player wants to use our previous gesture, which was to raise the right fist, they are entitled to do that."

Elgar admits some team mates may decide not to make any gesture at all, but believes it is important to support West Indies Cricket in its endeavour to highlight BLM.

"There are players that aren’t comfortable serving a gesture, but we have come to the West Indies to respect their campaign. We have come here on the back of a lot of long chats in our squad and it has maybe taken us a year to reach this point," he said.

"If players aren’t comfortable (doing anything), they must still stand to attention so we can respect the campaign."

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel today named the 13-member West Indies Men’s squad for the second and final Betway Test match against South Africa, starting on Friday, June 18. The panel recalled fast bowler Shannon Gabriel and left-handed batsman Darren Bravo.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector said: “Shannon Gabriel has been declared fully fit and as someone who was the spearhead of the attack before, he has returned to the 13-man squad. With Bravo, we have someone who is an experienced batsman and gives us a quality batting option.”

On the upcoming match, Harper added: “The team now has to play to the standard we know we’re capable of. We didn’t bat anywhere near to our potential in the first Betway Test and we have to improve with the bat in this upcoming match.”

West Indies v South Africa, 2nd Test | St Lucia | 18-21 June, 2021 | Day 1

After a convincing victory in the first Test, South Africa will look to clinch a series victory against the West Indies in the second Test in St. Lucia.

Overview:

West Indies vs South Africa, second Test
Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St. Lucia
18-22 June, 10:00 am local

The hosts had few positives to fall back on after a crunching defeat in the opening Test, with their batting order failing spectacularly against the pace of the South African bowlers. They will have to up their game in the upcoming encounter, in order to mount a comeback in the series. A silver lining was the performance of debutant Jayden Seales, who impressed one and all with his three-wicket haul. Jason Holder also bowled well, picking up four wickets.

For the visitors, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje blew away the Windies in the first innings, picking up five and four wickets respectively. Quinton de Kock then showcased his devastating abilities with the bat, with a glorious 141*. Kagiso Rabada came to life in the second innings, claiming a five-wicket haul to seal a comfortable victory for the Proteas. Skipper Dean Elgar will be hoping for more of the same from his unit, as he targets a series victory in his first assignment as the Test skipper.

Remember the last time:

On a lively wicket in St. Lucia, West Indies were torn to shreds by the Protean pacers, posting a meagre total of 97 on the board. In reply, de Kock blazed one of his finest knocks in the longest format - 141 off 170 balls alongside Aiden Markram's 60, as South Africa managed to score 322. The massive first-innings lead was enough of a cushion for the visitors, as Rabada's fiery spell inflicted an innings defeat on the hosts - returning 5/34.

What they said:

Kraigg Brathwaite (West Indies captain): "Didn't bat well in the first innings. We didn't get a big enough total and were always on the back foot. Even batting second, I still thought we didn't bat as well as we could. As a bowling group, we bowled well. Jayden Seales was magnificent in his first game. Batting wise today Roston Chase showed fight. We can take that as batsmen going forward into the second Test."

Dean Elgar (South Africa captain): "Collective effort from the side. Massive effort from the guys, asked them to score hundreds and take fifers and we've already had three accolades. Great to see our batting unit pass 300. The basics of bowling is what the bowlers did well here."

ST. LUCIA: Half-centuries by Proteas skipper, Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock, have given the visitors command over the first day of the second and final Betway Test match against West Indies on Friday.

Elgar’s gritty 77 off 237 balls (8x4s) saw the tourists through a rough start, following the fall of early wickets. They suffered the losses of Aiden Markram (0 off 3) and Keegan Petersen (7 off 25) within the first hour of the match, leaving them on 35/2 at the drinks break (14 overs).

By Lunch, Elgar was forced to look on as he lost Rassie van der Dussen, who was clean bowled by Kemar Roach (1/33) for four, but new kid-on-the-Test-cricket-block, Kyle Verreynne (27 off 89), was the perfect First Mate to his Captain. They shared an 87-run stand for the fourth wicket to give stability to the South African innings. Their partnership was disturbed by the fall of Verreynne’s wicket just before Tea thanks to Shannon Gabriel, who was the pick of the home team’s bowlers, closing the day with 2/47. Other wicket contributions came by way of Kyle Mayers (1/24) and Jayden Seales (1/28).

De Kock then entered the fray, holding down the fort well with Elgar. They shared a 79-run, fifth-wicket stand off 169 balls before the skipper’s dismissal in the last hour of play at the hands of Mayers. The South African wicketkeeper was then joined by Wiaan Mulder, adding 15 more runs to the scorecard before stumps was called. They are both unbeaten on 59 and two respectively.

South Africa is 1-0 up in this two-match series.

Keegan and Verreynne will be dissappointed not to take their chances. This could mean a return for Bavuma. Hamza has shown good form and may also get a look in if others continue to miss their opportunities.

Petersen seems to me to be mentally weak, the story that he couldn't sleep for a week before the first test after being told he'll be batting at 3 doesn't bode well for his success at test level.

Verreynne played solidly in difficult conditions yesterday and should eventually be able to replicate his domestic form in international cricket. He will gain confidence from his partnership with Elgar yesterday, which was crucial given how well the West Indian fast bowlers were bowling.

South Africa bowled out for 298. de Kock played another crucial innings, but narrowly missed out on a century with 96.

Kemar Roach probably the pick of the West Indian fast bowlers with 3/45, Kyle Mayers also returned decent figures of 3/28.

It'll be a tough ask for the West Indies to score a lot of runs in these conditions.

4/54, wickets shared among Rabada, Nortje, Ngidi, and Maharaj. Shai Hope's trying to grit it out at the crease, but no support from the other end.

Windies trying to consolidate but struggling - 75/4. Hope once again the main Hope for Windies.

Windies 145/7

Blackwood battling away on 45 at the moment.

Another poor performance from WI in this match till now. Their test team looked to be improving a bit recently but, this series is giving them a reality check so far.

ST. LUCIA: Quinton de Kock added 37 runs to his overnight score of 59* and fell just four runs short of a second, consecutive century in the two-match Betway Test series against the West Indies at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The 28-year-old wicketkeeper led the charge with two 36-run partnerships for the sixth and seventh wickets, featuring Wiaan Mulder (8 off 39 balls) and Keshav Maharaj.

Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi (1) shared 17 runs for the final wicket, but it was Rabada’s cameo of 21 off 23 (3x4s) that took the sting out of the fall of five wickets for 59 runs in the first session. The visitors fell two runs shy of 300 in the end.

The West Indies bowlers would have been pleased with their efforts, particularly after the conditions seemed to have moved in favour of the batsmen at that stage. Kyle Mayers (3/28) and Kemar Roach (3/45) returned three wickets each, with Jason Holder (1/47) also adding his name to the wickets column when he removed Maharaj for 12.

The South African bowling attack made it look easy in comparison, starting with the seamers who were relentless from start of finish. The home team lost their captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, to the first delivery of the innings off Kagiso Rabada (2/24) and it was downhill from there. They were reduced to 56/4 by the end of the second session with Shai Hope (43) and Jermaine Blackwood (49 off 106, 6x4s) picking up the slack and sharing the innings’ only partnership of significance (43 for the fifth wicket).

They lost impetus when Hope was bowled out by Ngidi (2/27) for 43. Blackwood continued to toil while searching for a new partnership, but none were to be had thanks to Wiaan Mulder who took an incredible three wickets for just a single run as he picked off the tail. Blackwood eventually fell one run short of what would have been a well-deserved half-century at the hands of Maharaj (2/47).

It was a bowling masterclass by the Proteas, with every bowler claiming at least one wicket (Anrich Nortje 1/41).

Day Three begins at 10:00 (local time) with the South African batsmen gearing up to extend their 149-run lead.

South Africa tear through Windies after de Kock 96

South Africa are firmly in the ascendancy in the second Test against the West Indies after dominating day two.

The Proteas were bowled out for 298 by lunch on the second day in St Lucia but by stumps had bowled the West Indies out for 149, with Shai Hope (43) and Jermaine Blackwood (49) the only batters to pass 20 for the hosts.

Resuming the day 218/5, South Africa suffered an early blow when Wiaan Mulder (8) fell to Kemar Roach (3/45) and left Quinton de Kock to bat with the tail.

On 72 when Mulder fell, de Kock found a reliable enough partner in Keshav Maharaj, who stood tall for 52 deliveries, scoring 12 before edging behind to Jason Holder (1/47). That ended a handy 36-run stand and before another run was scored, de Kock edged Kyle Mayers (3/28) to gully to fall for 96.

Denied a second consecutive century, de Kock hit eight fours in his 162-ball stay. A handy 21 not out off 23 balls from Kagiso Rabada took South Africa within touching distance from there, before Mayers and Roach accounted for Anrich Nortje (1) and Lungi Ngidi (1).

The West Indies’ innings got off to the worst possible start as Kraigg Brathwaite strangled Rabada (2/24) down the legside on the first ball of the innings. By the sixth over the West Indies were in disarray at 30/3, as Ngidi (2/27) and Nortje (1/41) removed Kieran Powell (5) and Roston Chase (4) respectively.

It got worse when Mayers (12) edged Keshav Maharaj (2/47) to slip. A 43-run stand between Hope and Blackwood looked to have put the collapse to bed but after Hope had his timber rattled by Ngidi, the wickets fell at regular intervals.

Rabada returned to have Holder (10) caught at gully, before Mulder collected the fantastic figures of 3/1, and the innings was wrapped up when Blackwood fell attempting to sweep Maharaj.

5 wickets in the match for Roach, but South Africa 188 ahead with 8 wickets in hand.

Mayers has some magic in his arm. always gets the wicket when he comes to bowl.

Keegan Petersen throwing away his wicket again, does nothing to dispel concerns that he doesn't belong at this level.

Should've prepared these surfaces for the SL series, and the SL surfaces for this series. Probably would have but for the COVID-induced venue changes.

Will be interested to see how the Sabina Park pitches behave vs Pakistan.

I hope the pitches against Pakistan would be lively just like the current series , that SL WI series was one hell of a boring affair.

I think the target is already enough for the WI , right ? 200 already and SA might get another extra 100 which will shut the shop for the WI.

WI have a terrible record at Sabina Park interestingly. Hopefully they are slow and low pitches.

Pakistan have won on the last two visits to Kingston. I'm expecting flat pitches given the woeful West Indian batting during these two tests against South Africa.

Mayers with another scalp, South Africa at 4/52. Their lead should already be sufficient for the West Indies.

Beautiful ball by Holder to de Kock, who gets a thin edge to the keeper for a duck.

South Africa 5/53, lead by 202 runs.

SA are collapsing . 53/5 now, Holder gets De kock. Do WI have an outside chance here ?

Why doesn't Darren Bravo make thier XI?Surely better than some playing

Brilliant innings from Van der Dussen.

Lead over 300 - a step too far for the Windies?

A remarkable 70-run, eighth-wicket stand between Rassie van der Dussen and Kagiso Rabada, has put the Proteas in the driving seat on Day Three of the second and final Betway Test against West Indies at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Van der Dussen returned unbeaten for 75 off 142 balls (5x4s, 1x6) – his sixth Test half-century – after the batting unit collapsed in an almighty way after Lunch was taken early. Rabada’s 40 off 48 (5x4s, 1x6) was a career-best score for the 26-year-old number nine batsman.

The day began with the loss of the entire first session due to a wet outfield caused by overnight and morning rain with the visitors due to come in to bat. They lost the top and middle orders in quick succession, languishing on 54/6 after 20 overs when Keshav Maharaj jumped into the frying pan with Van der Dussen. They squeezed 19 runs from 38 balls for the seventh wicket before Maharaj fell victim to Jayden Seales (1/34) for six.

Rabada, batting at a strike rate of 83.33 alleviated the pressure from Van der Dussen and did well to see off the worst of the West Indian attack. Together, they moved South Africa to a more satisfactory 174 all out, setting the hosts a daunting target of 324 to win – they have yet to reach the 200 run mark in this series.

Kemar Roach (4/52) and Kyle Mayers (3/24) were the pick of the Windies’ bowlers, sharing seven wickets between them and laying waste to South Africa’s top five. Jason Holder (1/24) and captain Kraigg Brathwaite (1/10), were the other wicket takers, Holder getting the big wicket of Quinton de Kock without scoring.

Day Four will begin 30 minutes early (09:30 local time) to make up for lost time.

Agreed. Such surfaces against SA pace attack with dukes ball was always gonna be a huge challenge especially for a batting lineup like WI.

RSA 298 & 174
WI 149 & 42/2 (15.3) CRR: 2.71
Day 4: 1st Session - West Indies need 282 runs

Lost a couple early wickets in this big run chase. Such a target seems beyond them.

WI 149 & 107/6 (37) CRR: 2.89
Day 4: 1st Session - West Indies need 217 runs

Looking hopeless for the hosts now - seemed too good to be true.

Pakistan will take hope from this WI performance.

This has been an embarrassing performance by the West Indies, no wonder their fans have lost interest in cricket with results such as this. Even Zimbabwe and Bangladesh would be ashamed of such batting displays.

Even by Windies standards, this batting display is abysmal.

Maharaj's hat-trick:

South Africa now just three wickets away from victory.

WI 7/147, Blackwood caught at the wicket off Ngidi for 25

West Indies are bowled out for 165 and lose the test match by 158 runs.

Keshav Maharaj finishes with 5 wickets.

South Africa win the series 2-0.
